  • If killer whales held by SeaWorld and other marine parks were released, where would they go? Marine mammal scientists have developed several plans that call for the orcas to be released into giant offshore sea pens so they have a more natural existence after a lifetime of being confined to marine park tanks. About Captive:
    The movement to free killer whales is at a crossroads. SeaWorld has ended the breeding of the animals. But a marine park building boom in China is driving the capture of wild killer whales, dolphins, and beluga whales. TakePart’s journalists travel from the Pacific Northwest to Asia to report on plans to return captive killer whales to the sea-and stop a new wave of captivity.

    Regardless of whether or not SeaWorld would do this, I think this would be a really cool idea for a rehab facility for injured whales/marine life. I like the fact that there could be educational walkthroughs for people to visit that emulate nature rather than shows.

    As much as I'd love to see the Orcas released into the wild, the Orcas would never be able to live in the wild after living in captivity for so long. Especially the Orcas born into captivity. As the saying goes, an animal bred in captivity is destined to spend their lives in captivity. There would be no way they could be released into the wild. They'd die due to diseases and things like that due to all the time spent in captivity. I mean, as an example, take Keiko, the Orca that played Willy in the movie Free Willy. After he was released, he failed to reconnect with his pod and ended up in Norway, seeking human contact. It's sad really. I'd LOVE for the Orcas to be released, I really would. If it was possible, i'd support it all the way. It would just be too dangerous for the Orca. But the Orcas (especially the ones bred in captivity) would stand no chance.

      Caitlin Williams yeah same here, We want these beautiful creatures to be set free and do what they're supposed to do and want to do... But then I'd feel bad for those orcas who were born in captivity, they never got to see their true home and the beauty of the ocean on their own...

    • @FukaiKokoro
      @FukaiKokoro 7 років тому +14

      That's a LIE. Keiko was retrained and released just fine. He only died due to YEARS of abuse from sea world catching up with him as most orcas at sea world do not live More than 25-30 years. So it is one hundred percent possible. Keiko knew how to feed himself and even joined a pod of orcas, traveled across the Atlantic and back with that pod. So you're wrong. They can be released.

      Mish Y It's not like a goldfish being put in a new tank. The orcas have been born and bred in SeaWorld and will have never seen or been in the ocean. There are many more diseases and infections that they can get in the wild than in the tanks. The orcas don't know how to hunt live fish or other animals and they would need to be taught. Also the orcas could beach themselves upon the beaches and would probably die.

  • @MandalorianDragonTrainer
    @MandalorianDragonTrainer 3 роки тому +2

    Captive born animals (of which all but 3 of SeaWorld’s orcas are) would very likely be unable to handle the immunological shock of being plunked in an ocean filled with pathogens, toxins, and plastics after a lifetime of living in pristine filtered water. Aside from that, their lives wouldn’t even be that dramatically different. They would still be fed by humans and have no need to hunt, so training sessions would have to continue to keep them fit and to engage their minds. Husbandry training would also be absolutely essential for their health care. A large, full-time staff would be in order-keepers to care for the animals, veterinarians to address health issues, aquarists to maintain water quality, divers to perform extensive daily checks to the netting, security to keep trespassers away from the bay, maintenance staff to keep up the facilities, etc. All this would require millions upon millions of dollars a year, for several decades. Revenue that is no longer being brought in by shows. If SeaWorld were to build their own pens-which is already problematic-at least the finance problem would be solved. But the proposed sanctuary project would not have that. The Whale Sanctuary Project has no one on staff with any relevant experience caring for orcas in a managed setting, only marine biologists who observe them in the wild and a neuroscientist who sues accredited zoos for violating “non-human persons’ rights.” Most sanctuaries are money pits that do not hold up to the standards of accredited zoos and aquariums, and even those that due do not make the same contributions to research, conservation, and public education. PETA and similar organizations have led the public so badly astray and turned them against the facilities they should be supporting.

      Seb asvertical At the moment they have almost no stimulation. all they do is the same methodical "behaviors" over and over again, and every so often the trainers throw an object in the pool for enrichment. In a seapen they would have all the other sea life as enrichment they would be able to do what orca are famous in the wild for doing, working together to catch there food. they already taught themselves to hunt birds while at seaworld. plus the ability to choose where they go would be massive for them, right now they have no power over where they go. the most they ever get to choose is if they swim to a little ajoining pool if the trainers open the door. a seapen might be enclosed but they are huge and they could swim where ever they want inside it.

    Good idea. But what I really think will be a good idea to happen after the captives are released is to make animatronics. The aquariums could still make money by making machines designed to look like animals. It will save both the animals and people from getting hurt, and it will cut costs for feeding certain foods or cleaning out the tanks, not to mention vet visits.

    But SW never gives an anserwer about sea pens. They only say there are none, but NGO's would build them in less than one year. SW must have schooled its trainers how to talk about this. The next sentence is always:"we can't let then free"- we know that SW. Common. This company makes my blood boil. "We saved so many animals" - Yes and made new parks to visit with the "rescued" animals. These orca's and dolphins brought you millions, can't you take a little money for them to have a good life in a sea pen?? Greedy gangsters.

    Most of you will think this is a good idea, but it's not... those orcas won't be able to survive in the wild especially if they been in captivity for soo long. They'd have to learn how to hunt their own food all over again cause they been hand fed for years, then their bodies and immune system won't be able to withstand those diseases and weather out in the ocean. Look what happen to Keiko when they released him in the ocean. Couldn't reconnect with his pod, too busy seeking contact with humans and caught pneumonia and beached himself, but moving orcas into sea pins after being in captivity for soo long.. just isn't going to work.

    • @MitchhWoods
      @MitchhWoods 8 років тому +37

      Touka Kirishima At least they get a chance to be some where better than a tank, Keiko's death was tragic but he was only one Orca. All of the other orca deserve the chance to be free.. Keiko always had issues when he was in captivity so that made is survival in the ocean extremely hard, once again humanity has failed.

      The animals at SeaWorld have only been in clean water their entire lives. If you were to put them in the ocean, they could develop diseases from the water and their immune system would have a hard time fighting then. This is because they have only been in clean water, resulting them to die or be close to death. I am all for putting them in the ocean, but the truth is SeaWorld can’t pay for that. It would be extremely hard especially because they would have to introduce the animals to the water in the ocean gradually over time and teach them to hunt on their own.

    • @nursejackie8239
      @nursejackie8239 8 років тому +4

      Orcas natural habitat is in the ocean that's why they're creating a sea pen to get all the whales to adapt to the wild. The whales would also eventually die prematurely from Sea World's chlorine as well as the whales' own excrement's filled toxic tank not to mention being stuck in a tiny fish tank 24/7 all their lives? So still Nothing is better than the ocean. Of course Sea World has all the means to release these whales but they refused for the sole purpose of making millions and millions of dollars off these poor whales before they die in their fish tanks! This is humanity at its worst and disgusting!

I'm so glad people and organisations are really supportive and hopefully they will be able to be free of orca shows and this idea in the video is a great solution. It's a great idea, however. You still have to consider the fact that the killer whales at Sea World come from different pods from different parts of the world. And so, yes it's great that at one point in time that they'd be able to move to the bigger part of the enclosure to learn to hunt, but once again not all the killer whales are from the same parts of the world and won't have been eating the same things. For example, killer whales in Australia have adapted to eating fish and rays, where killer whales from Vancouver and the Arctic are more adapted to eating seals, penguins and other whales. Also, you still have to consider their language barrier, these different killer whales come from different pods with different dialects, so they still wouldn't really be able to understand each other. So, in a sense it's kinda counter productive, if you know what I mean. But I'm 110% for the idea, I'd much rather see them out in the wild in an enclosure where they can eventually be released into the wild to swim free across the world, than see them in a bathtub.

  • @Aithusa.

    This is a bloody well good idea
    Another thing you could do is do not make it a place for people to see the orcas but only for inspectors and vets and anything that is very important for these animals. A 3rd section where an underwater tunnel is for marine biologist to inspect and see the animals behavior to see how they hunt. If they pass all of the inspections then the marine biologist or vet can tell you if they can be released or not YET.
    Make a policy saying that they can ALL be RELEASED into the WILD if their hunting skills and other skills are up to normal standard of a wild orca.
    Thats my idea to improve your idea!!

    • @CleverClover2023
      @CleverClover2023 5 років тому +2

      This sanctuary will need to make some money for staff pay, animal food, animal care and general upkeep. By not allowing visitors you would be taking away the chance for people to actually be properly educated about captive orcas. Other sanctuaries have an entrance fee, gift shop and accept donations. They allow people to view the animals from a distance. Having an underwater tunnel would be a great idea to allow visitors and staff to watch the whales.
      One thing to note is a captive born orca will not just magically start hunting. Hunting is a learned behavior, not instinct. All the orcas born into captivity are hybrids, releasing them into the wild would be extremely foolish! They don't have the cultural upbringing of a wild orca. No appropriate social skills, no language skills, unnatural aggression. Do you want an unstable, aggressive orca released into the wild?
      Only a few orcas in captivity CAN be released - Lolita, Morgan and the 9 Chimlong orcas.
