My Precision Fence System for the Miter Saw

- I've gotten a lot of questions and interest about my miter saw fence system. It's really quite simple. I'm using an aluminum extrusion profile manufactured by Misumi Engineering as a t-track within my miter station top. I then use a set of brackets to attach a wider and taller extrusion to the t-track to create a fence. A shop made flip stop and a measuring tape along the fence extrusion offer accuracy and repeatability. Furthermore, the profiles are compatible with a myriad of clamping and hold down accessories.

I am building my miter saw station as I type and have been holding back because of the prices I have been finding for fence systems. Found your page by accident and I am so happy I did. I bookmarked this video so I can watch it again when I have more time and will be checking out Misumi Engineering tomorrow when I get to work. I will be ordering my new Bosch CM10GD miter saw next week after a long search. I have been a trim carpenter and builder for 30 years and demand quality in my tools. Can't thank you enough :)
No problem. I'm happy you found this beneficial. I wish you the best.
The timing of this video is perfect. I'm about to construct my miter saw station and your track system will surely make it into my station. Thanks for sharing.
Kevin Bostrom Just so you know, the aluminum extrusions are cut to order. It can take up to 2 weeks to show up at your door step. It's taken 10 days for stuff to show up for me. The extrusions are cut in a machine shop and Misumi serves as an international company so procurement takes time. I would hate for you to order and be twiddling your thumbs waiting for stuff to come. Let me know if you have any questions or need clarification. Also, Misumi's engineering support is really good. Call them if you have questions. The ordering process can be a little convoluted.
AlabamaWoodworker. Thanks Huy. I'm in the design phase. I'm using Sketchup and as long as I have the specs from Misumi website I can continue.
Thank you. Very well done video, nicely narrated and full of great information. Thanks from Vancouver Island, BC, Canada.
First of all, ROLL TIDE! I live just south of Huntsville and ran across your shop tour from earlier this month. I am rearranging my shop and actually planned to build an outfeed table very similar to yours. I started looking at Misumi based on your previous video and I really appreciate you going into more detail since they have a ton of options on their site. You are doing a great job and can't wait to see more videos.
Jonathan Bond ROLL TIDE, Jonathan! I've been tempted to put up a Bama flash in my shop but I figured I'd make enemies with half the nation. Haha! I'm planning a script for a video on my Mutifunctional Outfeed/Assembly Table pretty soon. I hope to get it done in the next week. It may be helpful to you.
awesome! i just started to build my miter station. As a fellow mechanical engineer and aspiring woodworker I've found your videos to be a great resource. Thanks!
Wow, Amando, those are very kind words! Thank you! I hope I can continue to deliver.
Gary Garoutte
just ordered the extrusions from Misumi except I ordered two 8 ft and was really surprised that they were only 39 dollars apiece. I've got a lot of Incra equipment but if I had tried to build that long a set-up from them I could not have done it. Thanks for the heads-up.
Another great video. I've been a woodworker for 30 years, and I never once thought to check elsewhere for aluminum extrusions. I'm sort of new to using youtube as a resource, but I can see it's quite good, and I just recently started taking video of my work and posting it here, so we'll see how that goes. I'm James, by the way. I look forward to your upcoming projects. Take care.
James, I'm subscribed to your channel. Thanks for watching and thanks for putting out content.
Very nice. I was just starting to plan a reloading and workbench at the same time. Shopping for economical aluminum extrusion and glad I saw this video . Thanx, from Connecticut
FYI - most guys who use a fence versus embedded t-track put the fence behind the fence of the miter saw since a bowed/banana looking board isn’t possible to square up when rubbing on that extended fence. The fence on the miter saw itself is plenty long to square the stock and the other fence is really only helpful for measuring and making end stops.
I just ordered my items from Misumi and was impressed at how quickly and inexpensively they shipped.
Exactly what I was looking for for a radial arm saw and miter saw duel station. Very excited. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Thank you for watching!
Thank you for this very helpful video. I ordered parts from Misumi for the one I am building and was very impressed with their website and prices. I am primarily interested in making picture frames and was able to come up with a design using parts from Misimi that should make it highly accurate and fun to use. Thank you for helping me source those parts.
I'm happy you find the information valuable.
Another great video with lots of information. We are in the process having a very similar size garage/ workshop as yours built this spring. You have giving me alot of ideas on different ways of setting up my own shop. Take care and can't wait to see more of your video's.
James Poodiack Jr Thanks, James! Good luck!
This is a great video and the information is outstanding. I had designed a miter saw station and assembly table that I was ready to start building. Had been dragging my feet some due to cost of track, etc and not wanting to compromise my plans due to the cost. Thanks to your information, I found everything I need and now have it on order. Even with your info, it was a bit of a challenge getting an order placed but I believe it will be worth it. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Gene Pennel Gene, I know what you mean about ordering. You almost need a college degree just to order. I really hope this works out. It does take a little bit of time for the parts to come in but it's worth it.
AlabamaWoodworker I just placed my order it was a bit of a challenge as stated above but your info helped tremendously. How long does it take for orders to come in generally?
Absolutely love the in depth detail in your videos.
Very well done, informative and very professional. I have watched 3 of your videos and will probably check out all the rest. I have seen several tips and designs that have peaked my interest. Thanks for sharing.
Smedleydog1 Than you for watching.
Just what I was looking for and very detailed. Ordering now. Great channel
Thank you, Mike!
Thanks for the video, definitely a less costly, and more customizable, solution than the packed systems I've been looking at.
Appreciated info on Misumi Engineering extrusions. Very reasonable as far as cost.
You're welcome. I hope you'll find a good use for these extrusions.
Plan to use them first on my miter station. Good to see others with engineering background involved in woodworking. It comes in handy when solving problems that come up in the shop and on woodworking projects. facebook.com/ohmrockingchairs/?ref=aymt_homepage_panel
So informative - great alternative to some of the more expensive options out there!
I'm happy you found some value in this video.
I like how you set it up to slide back and forward to use different zero clearance fences.Good long straight edge and you good to easily set for ayn of them. Nice job.
i came up with the idea to use those aluminum extrusions to improve my miter gauge on my table saw, and it's nice to see some other people using the same concept! I'm gathering ideas to improve mine, and will certainly steal some from you :p
Nice! I didn't realize Misumi is only 20 minutes away from me, so I just placed my order for local pickup!
Excellent video thanks for the attention to detail and the specs. I was lost on Misumi trying to figure what to order.
No problem. I hope this will help you.
Thanks for sharing I find your videos very informative. It's nice to see alternatives from the standard expensive miter saw fences
You're very welcome! Thank you for watching!
Thank you for being so informative as I was looking into installing a fence like yours that I saw in you shop tour.
great information.
Colin Blankenship That was my goal! I want as many woodworkers to succeed as possible.
Fantastic info! Not sure how I missed this when it was posted over a year ago but I will definitely be using this fence method in place of my current set up. I’m actually located down here in Mobile so I’m a fellow Alabama woodworker:) thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Thanks for including all the part numbers... looked into this awhile ago and never followed through
I'm happy this video helped you out. The ordering and procurement process can be confusing and that's why I listed all the part numbers. Keep in mind the last set of numbers in part numbers for the fence and fence track are lengths specific to my configuration. You'll need to specify the lengths you need cut. When in doubt call Misumi directly. They are very helpful.
Thanks for sharing. Lets talk about your MOT table next! Great videos.
Robert Lamb You're not the only one that's requested I do a video about my MO/AT. It's on deck!
Glad to have found your channel. very informative! First video I caught was the shop tour, which left me with several questions - the most pressing of which you just answered here. thanks! I've been planning to build a version of Jay Bates miter station, but wanted to improve on the fence. this is perfect
Wow, thanks Joe! I'm really surprised at how many people have found this video to be helpful. Jay Bates' miter station is definitely an excellent design. I'd be interested to see his miter station with my fence design. In fact, I'd be flattered. Best of fortune on your build!
Wow! Very informative. I am moving this month which means I get to build a completely new shop. I have a feeling I'm going me to be using your fence idea! Thanks for the info! Subscribed!
Michael Spurlock Good luck on the new shop. Hope this helped!
AlabamaWoodworker. Thank you! I appreciate that. I'm looking forward to getting it set up.
Thanks for this, especially the price breakdown. I looked at their site after watching your shop tour vid and was pretty confused by the catalog in the short time I looked at it. This helped make sense of it. I'll definitely be looking into their stuff when i do my miter station this summer.
William Look all way at the bottom of the video description. I list all of my part numbers. Note, the last set of numbers on the Fence and T-track are my specified lengths. When you order your parts specific to your needs the part number needs to include length just like my part numbers did. When in doubt, call Misumi. They are extremely helpful.
Thank you for providing this technical information on aluminum extrusions. I have checked the Misumi eng website for the parts you mentioned. I would like to ask what is the difference between the left side fence and the right side fence? Thank you.
George
Burnsville NC
Excellent video Huy! I noticed they don't list prices on their site so I was surprised to see how cheap they were when you mentioned the prices in the video. That's a really good price for all of the hardware you received.
Thanks for sharing, I appreciate it!
Thanks, Sean. When you're navigating Misumi's website for a specific part, the left column is your friend. For instance, if you wanted the flat extrusion (12mm x 20mm), you'll need to specify that on the left. Finally, you'll need to enter the length you want the extrusion cut to. You'll see a number in red telling you how many configurations you need to still specify before receiving a price quote. Once you enter all the specs, you'll receive a green "Complete" text and a price will show up in the right column. Yeah, only engineer could think of this type of ordering system.
Thank you for posting all that info! Very helpful and I'm excited to order a long one piece track for my own miter saw station that I can afford!
Very informative. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to your next video.
Robert Cheramie Thanks for watching!
I enjoy your videos and especially appreciate that you share the sources and prices. I'm a little south of Nashville and may visit Littrell Lumber that you mentioned in your bench video. Thanks!
Derek Mueller You'll like the Southern Yellow Pine Littrell has to offer.
What a great resource! Glad I found your channel. Keep it up!
Maren Jensen Thanks, Maren!
That is a great design.
You might consider replacing the screws on the fence-locating inserts with setscrews. If you do that, you will have a flat work surface when the fence is removed.
This is the solution I was looking for. I need a miter station buy my garage is too small to have a dedicated space. Thanks.
Thank you for watchin!
You da man! I'm also a mechanical engineer by trade and use McMaster and Misumi at work extensively. Awesome tips for the UA-cam woodworking community as I feel most are not aware of these suppliers.
Mustard Made I think as mechanical engineers we can evaluate products sold by woodworking companies based on many of the more common engineering supply companies and see a major discrepancy. Thank you for the encouragement. While I enjoy posting these shop tips, design, and analytical videos, I'm really wanting to start posting build videos, specifically furniture. Thank you for watching.
Enjoyed the video! Looking forward to more!
Thank you for watching! I hope I can deliver.
Great video and very informative. I've begun to realize that extruded aluminum certainly has a lot of uses in the woodshop - especially for precision jigs and such. I'm planning my miter saw/radial arm saw station and definitely considering extruded alum. I'm also planning on building my next table saw cross cut sled using extruded alum.
David Colley The possibilities are endless when it comes to using machined components from companies like Misumi, McMaster Carr, Grainger, and Fastenal. The industrial equivalent woodworking products are more durable, compatible/interchangeable, and often times cheaper. Thank you for watching!
looking forward to the next video!!!
Brett Linsteadt It will be about my multifunctional outfeed/assembly table. Hopefully, I'll record it this weekend.
Really am loving your videos. Great information and really well presented.
Mark Feliciano Thank you, Mark! I've got lots to work on so I'm expecting improvements as I grow.
Great video and great source for extrusions and accessories! Just an FYI, the description below the video states "20mm x 30mm" for the "30mm x 60mm" extrusion.
Thank you for letting me know. I fixed the error in the description.
Thank you, that was very informative and clear. I'll be using elements of your design to build my own system!
I'm happy you'll be able to use some ideas that I presented.
Thanks for the info on the Misumi extrusions. You have a great shop!
Leonard Howard I hope you can find a use for the extrusions. Thank you for watching!
Very thorough video and I really like the mfg information to include price. I am contemplating making a large MFT table and maybe these extrusions on the outside would be the ticket. Bill
I recently discovered your channel and am really enjoying it. Thanks for all the detail and good ideas. I am also an Alabama woodworker, just down the road from you, near Florence. I've been using a radial arm saw for 50 years (yes, the same saw) for material break-down and added a miter saw about 10 years ago for precision work. Last year, I built them into the same bench with a shared fence. The fence sections are mounted on T tracks in the bench for calibration. Having seen your stops, I will definitely add them. Thanks for the excellent idea. I built stop block that do not flip, however. Your shop-made flip stop looks great. Do you feature that in a video? If not, would you share the plans, please?
If you don't want to buy the special nuts you can use a carriage bolt. Choose the size where the square part keys into the narrow part of the track.
Wonderful, thanx you for sharing.
Very informative Huy. I always that those types of extrusions were pricey. Thanks for sharing!
GuysWoodshop Some of the more popular ones are (i.e.80/20). Misumi just happens to be a "brand" that's relatively inexpensive.
Very precise set up, looks fantastic 👍👍👍
Sumo's Projects Thank you!
I just want to thank you for the incredible amount of time and energy that you have put into these videos! They are incredibly thorough and this is one of the few times that someone has listed the cost on some of the items from the videos and even the part numbers. Very helpful because frankly with the tracks, I would not know where to begin. Everything you do is well thought out and adapted to your preferences and needs - which should be the case with all of us. Right now I have to have everything on wheels because I have to work out doors (tarping things at night, sunny climate all year) until I move and build a large shop.
The one question I have is what length tables you use on each side of the mitre station and how much space did you allow for your saw? I am building two tables, then lower one for the saw which can be bolted to the other one, then replaced with one for a radial arm saw. Thanks again for the exceptional videos, well crafted and full of the what, why and how of your choices, which help us to make our own.
Excellant video. Full of useful info. Thank you.
Nice setup for your saw. I have a Best Fence from Fastcap for my Kapex. LOVE IT. I got the fence of CL for a discounted price.
WoodWorkingGuy MN Those are the best kind of discounts. I have found tons of stuff on Craigslist.
Thank you for the Video and the information! Ordering some of their stuff now...
That's a great system... I've to figure it out if its accesible here in Europe. Great video 👍
SAWBLADE PROJECTS Thank you!
@ SAWBLADEPROJECTS You can buy from www.misumi-europe.com in Europe :-)
@AlabamaWoodworker: Thank you very much for the detailed video!!
80/20 has hundreds of extrusions, so does Eurekazone and Rockler. All this is available from US sources.
I did the same with my routertable, very good stuff, can not upload a picture
thanks!
Very thorough, thank you.
Nice review, now I just need a project to do something that uses those extrusions! On your fence locator stops, would a setscrew work to get rid of the bolt head protruding above your table top? My favorite source for knobs, clamping handles, etc is J.W. Winco, they have an excellent selection and ship fast. Steve
ExtremeWoodworker Thanks Steve, about the tip for J.W. Winco. I'm always looking for competitive resources. Yes, an M6-12 set screw would work wonderfully instead of the cap head screws. The screws push against the bottom of the table track and lift the insertion nut against the top of the track. The insertion nut has four protruding dimples that help grip the interior of the track when they are locked down. I love it! I might switch them out with set screws! Genius idea!
Super informative video Huy. You obviously put a lot of thought into your projects and a lot of effort into your videos. I'm curious, did you do a cost or quality comparison to other non-woodworking sources of aluminum extrusions such as 80/20? I have to say too that I am looking forward to seeing some of your non-shop projects. If your shop projects are any indication, I imagine they will be pretty fabulous.
mark smith I did consider 80/20 and I remember 80/20 being more expensive and (at least at the time) did not offer pieces cut to size. It was not a large amount more expensive but did make a difference when buying multiple pieces for multiple jigs, and fence systems. My traditional workbench will be my last "shop type" video for a while. I'm planning a trestle table build video series following Chris Schrawz's article from Woodworking Magazine entitled American Trestle Table. I have been in love with table for quite some time and I think it's a great introduction into furniture making.
Happened on your video this morning, very impressed with you shop and its layout. Thanks for sharing. Really interested in your miter saw station, thinking of building one similar, great design ideas. Was really excited by the extrusions you used but when checking into the company it doesn't appear they will sell to non commercial individuals. Kind of disappointing. Did you purchase through your employer?
Paul Streu Hey Paul. No, I purchased them as an individual. Give them a call. It may be that you'll need one of customer reps to set up an account for you.
spot on, thanks very much - subscribed
I am really enjoying your videos so far. I looked at misumi and was about to order some extrusion, and it looked like they measure the length in .5mm increments. Was this the case for you or am I misreading something? Thanks in advance, and keep up the good work!
The larger extrusion (30mm x 60mm) can be ordered in 0.5mm increments from 45mm to 4000mm (I believe). The smaller extrusion (12mm x 20mm) can be ordered in 1mm increments from 50mm to 3000mm. This was the case for me. Keep in mind, the size of the extrusion does affect shipping rates. That being said, I believe Misumi's shipping rates are very reasonable. Don't hesitate to call them. They are very supportive with techs and engineers on staff to walk you though ordering. Thank you for watching.
Can you please add the list and prices and the quanity of each item you showed at the end in the description or a link to it? Thanks for the great video!
Hey Jeff! Yes, that's a good idea. I'll post it to the description tonight after work. Keep in mind, the product code will specify length designated by the last set of numbers (mentioned in the video). By the way, I have not forgotten about you. I know you asked that I do a video about my Multifunctional Outfeed/Assembly Table. That video is next. Give me a couple of days to come up with a script. The table is packed full of features and if I'm doing a video about the table, I want to make sure I don't miss anything.
That would be excellent! Thank you! I will keep the product code in mind when ordering and adjust the "length" portion accordingly.
About the multifunctional/outfeed table. I have tried making a few videos myself, and working 60 hour a week as a full time engineer, like yourself, leaves little time for anything other than eating, and sleeping. Therefor, I do realize it takes an enormous amount of time and energy to make videos so I understand when videos take some time between them.
Thanks again!
Hey Jeff! I went ahead and added the product codes, quantities, and prices for each item within the video description. I hope that helps. Let me know if you need anything else. New video coming soon.
Отличная работа.
Excellent video and a very cost effective source. Can you offer Product #’s for taller fences? Thanks.
You have very good technique. Are you an engineer?
Yes, I'm an engineer.
I love this idea, I will also set this up for my miter saw. A couple of questions for you. Is it necessary to have the track routed into the table? Or could you just mount the new fence to your miter station in-line with your miter fence? Would it be possible to add the wixey digital tape measure to this fence?
Enjoying the Great videos you are doing and Thank you for Misumi tracks! Have a question who makes the Black wood clamps you use?
michael shawn Sedor Hey Michael! Thanks for watching. I buy those clamps from Harbor Freight. They are cheap buy get the job done.
Hey Michael! I was looking through the video and I can't recall using a black wood clamp in the video. Could you point me to the time in the video that you see the clamp you're inquiring about? I could help you better if I knew specifically what clamps you're talking about. Also, I do use the Harbor Freight F-style clamp but I don't believe they are shown anywhere in this video.
yeah i posted in the wrong video but you figured out LOL Thank you much ill have to check them out. Thanks for the great Videos!
Very excited to make this! Have you thought about making a sliding table for the table saw?
I've considered making a sliding table. Misumi and many of the other engineering components companies have very good linear bearings that could very easily be attached to a table saw using extrusions. The issue is having the ability to remove the miter gauge for ripping operations and detents for known angles (i.e. 22.5, 45, and 90 degrees). Without that repeatability and modularity, it doesn't make sense for me until I can figure out those requirements.
AlabamaWoodworker I think you are really on to something with using standard extrusions instead of buying the branded stuff for twice as much. Hopefully you figure out the table saw sled system, a lot of people would be interested in that i believe.
Thanks for sharing. I just received my items from Misumi. They look great. I’m in the process of getting them fit up. I do have one question for you. Did you screw the tracks into your top or just use epoxy? Thanks for your notes and the part list.
Huy,
Great video!
Cám ỏn!!
luanmodsalon Không có gì!
Thank you for watching!
Nice video and excellent presentation, do you use the side table for other uses and then do you find the stops interfering
Dave Simpson Hi Dave! I don't use the side table for anything other than for miter saw support. The stops are designed to flip up which get them out of the way when squaring up one end prior to cutting the final length. Great question and thanks for watching.
I was in the market for a portable miter saw stand narrowed it down to the Dewalt DWX724 or the Bosch GTA3800. Do you have any experience with adding a custom Misumi fence system to one of these? Also which portable one would you recommend? thanks Charlie
charles greco I don't have experience with any portable miter saw stand so I cannot confidently recommend either of those stands. I've also never tried adapting the Misumi aluminum extrusions to a manufactured miter stand. I have only made my own miter stands and know they work for my needs based on my designs. I wish I could be of more help.
I like this extrusion better than others I've seen, so I ordered some from Misumi (Thanks!) but I'm having trouble attaching the profile into the Dados, it seems theres almost no clearance for a screw head. I've countersunk a #6 screw in and still can't clear it, so I'm wondering how you attached yours? I'm considering using an adhesive (MDF surface o mine) thanks!
I used a slow cure epoxy. I don't need to remove the track so using epoxy made sense for me.
thanks, I went ahead and used an aluminum construction adhesive, works, but not the best as it expanded just a hair afterwards, but still functional!
Finnaly a normal American!! You use Metric system.
Does the extrusion work with the Festool guide rail clamps from the MFT table?
Also where are the links for the musimi
?
Thanks
Tim Veach The only clamps I know that are compatible with the extrusions are the ones I talk about in this video. The links are in the description.
I wonder if I can make up a bandsaw resaw fence out of their items?
I think you could definitely make a band saw resaw fence if using some of Misumi's taller extrusions, or ganging them together.
You assembled this a while ago. Do you still like it and would you recommend? If not what would you change? Thanks and love the content!!!
Peter Rasmusen It continues to work well for me and for my workflow style I would recommend it.
Do you have any type of plans for your flip stop?
I'm a fan!
Jared Turner Unfortunately, I don't have plans for the flip stop. Thank you for watching.
whats your length of the miter saw station itself? I need to make mine smaller, and yours looks to be perfect size, we have the same saw.
I can't remember off the top of my head. I'll measure it when I get home.
KnottyDog WoodShop Hey man! The length of the miter station is 72". It's 24" deep. You'll want to have 2 mounting configurations (forward and rearward). I keep my saw mounted forward so that I can make 45 degree cut.
Can you elaborate on the forward and reverse mounting configurations. I'm not following... Thanks in advance!
Does Kreg stops fit the tracks?
I 2nd this question :)
Great video! Just ordered from Misumi, can't wait to finish my miter station. What router bit did you use to cut the channels for the t-tacks? The top is too big to run in it through the table saw with a dado.
Hi Karen! That sounds so exciting. I used a 1/2" spiral down cut bit and made two passes to get the width I needed for the t-tracks to fit. The spiral down cut pushes the material downward and prevents tearout on the surface on your miter station top. Hope this helps.
AlabamaWoodworker Thanks for the info. We were actually able to us a dado, but will try the spiral down next time. Keep up the great work!
Great videos/channel - You should post these to r/woodworking if you don't already
Thanks, David! Yes, I'll definitely look into do that.
do you know, does the t track extrusion work with Kreg Clamp downs/and/or the rockler t track accessories?
Tim Veach If the accessories you're talking about use or are compatible with 1/4" or 5/16" t-bolt (often called toilet bowl bolts), then yes, they will work. I have not used the items you're specifying with my extrusions.
Even if the bolt doesnt lock against the sides, couldnt it lock using the upward force on the bolt?
Yes, it could. The friction and compression fit would be sufficient. You might turn whatever locking mechanism you choose to use a little more than a bolt that locked against the side walls. I guess I should have stated that it isn't a "true" fit.
Hey man, dont second guess yourself. I think you were correct in what you said. I was just curious if you saw any concern with it placing most the force against the inside top of the aluminum extrusion.
Very nice.
I wouldn't be concerned with over torquing a bolt against the inside top of the aluminum extrusion. Thank you for the encouragement.
just found you on youtube yesterday, and really like your way doing things, look forward to watching and learing ,, thanks,, doug, ,dallas texas
Thanks, Doug! I hope I can continue to deliver. Thank you for watching!
