- Esteemed rock critic John Doran meets Jimmy Page in the second part of Noisey's The British Masters, a series where John interviews the most influential and colourful figures from British popular music history.
This time round he chats with the founder of Led Zeppelin: a band long regarded as one of the greatest British musical exports of the 1970s, who released a tetralogy of self-titled albums that changed British rock forever. Page has been awarded an OBE, met President Obama and performed at the Olympics and Live Aid.
The final Led Zeppelin remastered albums Presence, In Through The Out Door and Coda are out now with deluxe versions containing unheard material.

6:06 This is my favorite part. Page's excitement when he answers the question is so cool! What a musician, they'll never be another like him.
What a true Fact! I sure miss them as a whole.. Led Zeppelin
when did he turn from a young British rocker to an old Japanese fisherman?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
It's called being alive---and with that one ages, hence one would look different after being alive for awhile--- you fucking idiot!
He still looks cool. Hey i like Japanese fishermen! It's not my fault.
Maybe it's the fault of a 1970's satanic ritual with crowley gone bad.
Or gone good...
If anyone doesn't know, he is one eighth Asian. So that's why he looks it.
I’d loved to have heard what Page had to say, but my eardrums exploded after that first live performance video and now I have a dog to tell me the doorbells rang.
jesus. He's straight in there with "When John Bonham died"
how would you have asked the question?
While this is a 5 year old comment, I've just got to say, there was clearly an edit before that question, so it could've been anywhere in the conversation, but I've got no doubt they at least spoke a _bit_ before that, if it wasn't actually just later in the conversation. No way Page just said, "Hi," there's a little silence and then Doran goes, "So, when John Bonham died ..." lol.
@@JET7C0 yea a suppose your right
That question was a Roy keane 2 footed tackle.
Bonzo was a great drummer.
A massive sound. A titan..
There's no way he's boring john does an excellent job. This series has been awesome and Johns interviewing skills is the main reason.
Haha 'Well I couldn't be bothered, I was too busy doing Led Zeppelin!' What a legend!
You got a signed album and a handshake from a mythical wizard of darkness and musical deity. Oh my god man. I would have exploded.
Kashmir is one of the coolest riffs to this day. That song swings.
some have pointed out that there r better guitarists out there, & indeed if technique were the only criteria, then it's true. but my criteria is a combination of technique, innovation, creativity, feeling, expression ("light & shade", "whisper to the thunder"), & i find all of that & more in jimmy page. a living god.
Amen, Brother
Jimmy was a great producer
Could not have said it better myself
Criterion. If you are going to use fancy Greek words, at least learn the difference between the singular and plural.
@@andrewmartin6445 if ur going to correct someone, at least know what ur talking about, cuz u just might make a fool of yourself. u would b correct if i had said combinationS (plural) instead of combination (singular). u have just been greeked. ur welcome ;)
Love your guitar work Jimmy Page
What I like about Led Zeppelin is that it has given us 4 amazing musicians... A monumental band indeed... And we thank Jimmy Page for assembling it.
I count myself so fortunate to see the band in May 1973 at the height of their powers. The site was a hockey arena but we were 2 rows back from the stage so the opportunity is still appreciated, and having only recent seen my first Jeff Beck show around that time I got to see the guitar gods of my age from a few feet away. Page was a dazzling artist back then and his guitar playing was truly over our heads. We got to see them right around the time that Houses of the Holy was released. A vivid and lasting memory.
jimmy has been asked these questions 100 times
So tedious for him. Prob more like 1000 times.
collingwoodfan72 don’t think he would be amused by that question......at all.....
I love how excited pagey got when asked about the remastering from the original master tapes
he really looks like a lovely, kind and wise person and I want to meet him so bad
Haha. The old mage always has some tricks up his sleeve
There are many better guitarists yes, but Jimmy was by FAR the greatest rock composer/guitarist of all time. The musical landscapes he painted were so far beyond anything others were doing throughout the entire decade of the 70's. Somehow Jimmy was able to create something unique, fresh and rocking as hell on pretty much all of their studio albums one after another. His music never got boring and probably why still to this day Zeppelin has so many loyal fans. You can't really point to any one song Jimmy wrote and say "This is Zeppelin's sound..." Zeppelin sounded so much more diverse and experimental and covered new ground constantly.
JPJ was the genius composer, not Page but I agree, theres nobody better as far as lead players go. He created the blueprint, even as far back as the yardbirds. He is the greatest of all time upon till now.
Hendrix had already been everywhere Page tried to go later.
An apt title, Jimmy broke out the bow on Dazed and Confused and remains untouchable...to this day.
The sound mixing in this interview is awful. I raise the volume to hear God speak, then music blast through the office.
+Stephen Archer lmao! very well said. i also had a problem w/the sound mixing.
Agreed +Stephen Archer And the constant backwards intro music underneath the interview is distracting. Sounds like a f**kin' annoying mosquito.
+Stephen Archer haha yeah for sure.. I had to turn it up to here him speak and frantically turn down cuz my son and wife are sleeping in the next room! lol
lol
Yeah true
Love Jimmy Page SO much! He and Led Zeppelin were behind so many good times in so many lives and still are.
Yapostadodat possibly bad times
Hope others picked up on that reference
Sir Tiik I just got it, first song first album.
Anyone else think that Jimmy has an adorable voice?
Not only a great voice but he is so handsome!
I met Pagey years ago at a Stereoohonics gig,he was a gent, and answered all my anorak questions,a couple of months ago,I happened to pick up a young hitch hiker in North Wales,he asked me if I liked Zep,so I told him how I
met Pagey,n that…and when he got out of the car,he said ‘I’ve got something to admit’…‘I’m Jimmy Page’s son,Ashen…and he was !
Now that’s really great 💓
The title says "Jimmy Page"....But I only see Karl Lagerfeld
Mah boi Page lookin' like Michio Kaku right here
I love that he asked him about Lucifer Rising because the version synchronized with his music is superior. It was good to hear his explanation on what transpired. Jimmy looked pleased to have been asked that and understood that this was a proper interview by someone who had done his research. Well done.
Best guitarist of all time.
Really good interview.
Thank you for capturing this.
Jimmy just seems a nice kind genuine guy it’s lovely to see :)
Did you level the audio with a potato?
Absolutely a legend towering above the contemporary rock stars of today, so very humble too and interesting and intelligent, absolutely the real deal right there no ego massage needed
Fantastic interviewer/journo. I love that John's look evolved a bit throughout the series.
thanks for this, great interview.
Jimmy Page has an auro, a presence about him.
It's felt even though we're not physically in that space or time!
"aura" you mean surely?
Yup.
The British greats are very unique. Bless their contributions. Amazing. 🇬🇧
Jimmy Page should have been on guitar moves
Guitar moves should have never been cancelled.
Yes!
We gotta make a petition to bring back Sweeney
the coolest dude that ever rocked a guitar, the james dean of rock guitar.
“The thing seems to fit perfectly.” That’s the perfect description of Led Zeppelin.
That's an incredible beautiful Table.
The building John enters looks like the old Olympic Studios. Nice choice of venue!
Love The New Yard-birds !
I wish he was asked why Jones wasn't included in his later work especially with Plant. I think Jones would like to know too...
phil hems the bassist who went on tour with Plant and Page was Plants son-in-law.....a very good bass player as well as other instruments. Blood is thicker than water I suppose. Also keep in mind that Plant and Page had a much stronger bond than they did with Jones. jones was an integral part of the band on stage, but off stage he sort of went his own way , from what I’ve read. So their wasn’t the emotional bond that there was between Plant and Page....who truly enjoyed sharing a stage together. And since this was in no way a “Zeppelin reunion”, they did not feel compelled to include him.
So Jimmy Page is Karl Lagerfeld now?
+levoldunom but jimmy is so much cooler.
Jimmys actually achieved something and his legend will live forever.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
+Tom Smith LMAOOOO
nope he is steven seagal
I thought it was Karl Lagerfeld based on the thumbnail...
Legend
Zeppelin 3 is my desert island record. First choice.
Don't quite understand the drastic differences in volume between the meek interview levels and the shocking blast into the live bits.
What happened in post production?
3:48 high praise and respect for the musicians in India
Jimmy should write a book on recording techniques. The way Zeppelin was recorded is what changed rock music overnight. Eddie Kramer and Andy Johns stole heavily from him and brought his techniques to other bands.
Crikey wasn’t expecting bonham to be brought up so casually in the first question, insensitive to be honest.
Just the thumbnail is legendary
The God.
If I were going to interview Jimmy Page, I'd comb my hair first.
why the hell would you do that. Doubt he gives a fuck about combes mate.
Yeah did you see page himself in the day?
Cool video. Gives an extra puzzle piece to anyone who seeks to know everything about J Page/Led Z... But what’s up with the sad violin instrumental in the background??? LMAO!
I could listen to Jimmy Page for hours...
Best hairstyle yet
Interviewer? :')
@@RobinTaylorJenkinshahahahahahahahaha
come on noisey with the mastering of this audio you know your like a music channel right? other than that decent interview not one of johns best but i enjoyed him asking about pages time with the bombay recordings definitely something i dont see touched upon much in interviews with him id seen for those who havent heard google bombay sessions and led zepplin
This interviews gonna go great! (first question is about Bonzos death) oh... nevermind
For all his faults, hes still a god and basically forgotten about in post punk britain. Still to this day one of the best lead players this country has ever produced. His influence on John Squire is so heavy.
Why you no get Matt Sweeney to interview ?
+Jeffrey Windisch it's all about the sweeney! I was dissapointed when they replaced him on the d'addario guitar show...
Sweeney's got a certain geeky charm but this guy is more measured and astute, IMO, and more capable of handling interviews like this. A figure like Page deserves to be engaged by a person who is erudite and somewhat dignified. I love this series!
Jeffrey Windisch who??
@@KowankoMusic Sweeney's a good guitar play tho and played with iggy and bonnie brince billy and johnny cash so he's not just some nobody
Finally an intelligent interviewer for Jimmy Page.
Jimmy is an enigma for me. Stick to music, and only music, and he’s eloquent, gentle, friendly, and generous. Turn to anything personal, like complimenting a pillow on his couch or mentioning his interest in the color black and he can be defensive. It’s never rude, but he obviously had hard barriers.
Jimmy, you are 75! Take OFF the sunglasses when you are indoors. That said, still the greatest IMHO!
Channel called Noisey uploading a video with such uneven sound levels. Interview is super quiet, clips are insanely loud.
dude, DUDE! I have so, so, SO many questions to ask him.
Both Jimmy Page's and Bobby Beausoleil's soundtracks to Lucifer Rising are awesome. We got a two for one on that one.
I liked the interview, idk why so many people are so nothered. I liked the sound on the live parts
fuck yeah...this is awesome!
Does anybody know the name of the song that plays in the beginning and the end?
As a scruffy longhair sworn to a life of bluejeans, it pains me to admit that Doran looks great all trimmed up and preppy.
That said, I used to love Zep back in the day, then got exhausted of blues rock. I still enjoyed the interview, but I feel like Page is a bit distanced by fame to make it as effective of an interview as I'd have liked.
Him not mentioning Bobby Beausoleil when he talks about Lucifer Rising is a bit suspicious...Great interview, nevertheless.
Jimmy without Bonham is like 50 per cent less. If you have seen videos and heard bootlegs, you know the chemistry I am talking about. Reminds me of the Prince quote, ‘Page could not carry a rhythm without Bonham.’ Overstatement, but has flashes of truth. Page knows that the levels he reached with Bonham could not be replicated and he will always be unfavourably compared to the 70s him. It’s the reason he has rarely performed live since the Zep breakup apart from the 94 and 07 reunions, while his contemporaries like Beck have performed extensively.
It seems to me the only thing this interviewer had any interest in was the autograph.
anybody know what the ambient music at the end is? thanks!
Absolute ledgend
ya man
Monster opportunity of an interview and didn't even get ten minutes in. Love this interview series but this was a let down...
there will NEVER be an equal to Jimmy Page. Some will be just fine with this-others will just consider
Led Zeppelin: Glenn Hughes Jimmya Pge & Jason Bonham Now!
Yes
Always liked Jimmy........and Quaker Oats too LOL
haha
He's starting to look like Karl Lagerfeld...
John Doran is the only Music journalist that’s got better and healthier with age . Fair play to him.
Good Guy Michio Kaku!
Fer Ramirez 😂😂😂😂
Love the fact they have turned down name your price money to reform (probably more to do with Plant)
I wish Jimmy Page ....would go on tour ...with ......The Yardbirds again !!! .....That would be great !!! ....The Yardbirds need a guitar player now !! Why not ???
5:08 #1977: The #1970s ― to the #Max!
Which sound track is her referring to?
Does anyone know the theme song by noisy?
Who knows what the music plays at the beginning?
Should have never let my albums go...cds just don't have that sound.
" It was an intervention then "
I always find it telling that Page only made one solo album, then disappeared into doing cameos.
Also, +1 to the whole "why is this interviewer so wasted he can't come out with the right years for his research on any actual enthusiasm in his voice" as well as "sound mastering, lEARN IT!"
la critique et la médisance sont tellement aisées !!! passez la porte et laissez nous apprécier ! le meilleur groupe de tous les temps !
I was born in 68 jimmy in my DNA
Is he going for the George washinton look..
Hi I am John Doran and this is nosiey. Featuring one of the most monotonous voices ever
dont be so rude
Bring back Sweeney
Hounslow? . He's from Epsom, and cut his teeth in the 'surrey delta'.
This interviewer has the personality of a wet towel.
😂😂😂😂
And yet you still watched it !😏
thats bollocks, hes cool af
BUT -He asked good questions and if it went on another hour it would have been even better.
He look s like Karl lagerfeld 😆
