Marat the great. That an old joke: God to Sampras: you will have great serve and volley abilities, to Federer: from everything i can, you will have a piece of that, to Nadal: you will be the greatest clay court player ever. To Safin: well, i don't have much left, what i can do for you.. well, you can be me sometimes :-)
Lmao wtf?! Sampras wasn't in his prime back in 1999-2002! Lol He was close to retirement...was forced out of top-10 and the only two courts he was still competitive on are at the Eimbledon and the US Open...lol Prime Sampras my ass...Now Federer on another hand...yes...beating Federer back then was impressive indeed i'll give him that! Especially at grand slams...
That 2005 AO semi against Federer was an epic match and I have that recorded down so I can watch it to remember how tough it was to beat Federer back then. Safin also was a big time contender back in those days and he really does have a beautiful serve and a two-handed backhand.
He hit 171km (106 mph) on his second serve, he wasn't really warmed up. I'm pretty sure he could reach 200 km (124 mph) or very close to it if he got nice and warmed up.
That was hilarious! I really enjoyed that, because actually, if you go back and have a look, Marat was a FIERCE competitor. He had some amazing matches, and I remember one practise session where he was deMOLISHing the ball. I couldn't believe anyone could handle that power. Seeing him today hitting 170+ wearing a suit?! Really, really cool.
@eoe123321 things are different now because of off-court training, nutrition, therapists, ..etc. Now there is much more money in the game so it is natural you want to play longer..
@@mememuncher1071 No, it's just that almost no one played past 30 years old back in the day. Agassi and Hewitt played a bit longer but that's about it.

@eoe123321 exactly. And the point is that djokovic can also beat the best version of wawrinka. they are potentially very capable of beating each other in their both "beast mode". But the difference it´s obviously consistency.
He used to average 1st serves in the 210km - 220km range, i think he was just scared of breaking the screen and didn't want to pull a muscle, 171km for him is like a second serve
Not scared, he just wasn't warmed up. No one wants to hurt himself serving hard with no warmup. I bet if he warmed up good, he could hit 120mph even in that suit.
Sad that Safin retired that early. He´s actually the same generation as Federer, Hewitt and Roddick. And he gave Federer a headache in his prime with his controlled power tennis.
I never saw someone beating better Federer than he did in that AO semis. (Federer was his usual prime self, but on the other end you had a guy outperforming him in every way).
Haha yes, 170-175 is about my first serve. With my own racket. With my own prefered stringing. And sport clothing. And a warming up :D NTRP 4.5 or so. And a bit older than Marat though.

Are you kidding me? The poor guy is in a suit and not even close to being warmed up! Are you trying to make him blow out a shoulder? He was a good sport about it, but that wasn't a great idea to ask him to serve like that!
This guy was special. He was one of my favourite players of all time.
Safin had tons of talent. Fun guy to watch. Glad he won a couple Grand Slams. Is enjoying life after tennis, which is great.

Nice to see Marat again :) That was the era I really got into watching tennis. Also with, Rafter, Ferrero, Kuerten, Hewitt etc
A tennis genious, Marat, was terrific!!
Safin was a player whose best game was unbeatable.

My fav player before Djokovic. LIVING LEGEND 💪
He used to average 1st serves in the 210km - 220km range, i think he was just scared of breaking the screen and didn't want to pull a muscle, 171km for him is like a second serve
nah, in those clothes his muscles were probably so stiff. also warming up drastically increases serve speed
Not scared, he just wasn't warmed up. No one wants to hurt himself serving hard with no warmup. I bet if he warmed up good, he could hit 120mph even in that suit.
Truth be told: he was not even trying!
Fastest serve I’ve ever hit was 207kph but before warmup I would never even attempt to hit over 170. Too easy to get hurt when not warned up
He's in a suit. We're not in the Matrix you know?
A legend no doubt!:)
Love seeing him again.
This guy is my idol
Didn't even care about showing off and doesn't even take his suit off. Could have easily hit one 125mph after a few warmups

also a shame that roddick went very early too
he had too many injuries.
Federer and Djokovic have been very lucky and had relatively few injuries.
Also his sister Dinara Safina just disappeared off the circuit after reaching near the top of the game.
Still a charismatic handsome man, he was so talented player
Marat is awesome player and unique

One of my favorite players. Big server and big hitter. He could beat anyone in a single match but the tournament is all about endurance and fitness.
