- Watch as I try 3 Meals out of a 24 Hour MRE from Australia. Menu items include Chili Con Carne, Vegemite, Mashed Potatoes, and so much more. Is it as good as other International MREs? Join me to find out.
At last an American that knows how to use Vegemite! Bravo Zulu Marine!
I learned to moderate my intake after overdoing it on the last review. Lots of OZZIES let me know. TFW
@@MeAncient One of the main things people don't get with vegemite is that it's moderated by the addition of butter. However, in a MRE, you can in a pinch use the cheese spread mixed with vegemite (in Oz, having a toasted cheese with vegemite under it is called a mousetrap).
yea i was 1 of the Aussies who told him he screwed up last time and how he should eat it
@@MeAncientgreat job 😂
As the commenter above me said, Vegemite goes brilliantly with butter and/or cheese.
But you nailed the ratio 👍
Hot toast with butter and Vegemite, mmm...
Yes, kind of. The best experience IMO is Vegemite toast. A generous spread of butter (or margerine, but butter is better), and a smear of Vegemite on top. The ratio is what gets most Americans. They tend to use *way* too much Vegemite. Cold toast with butter (Generous) and vegemite mixed with the butter is simply the best thing!
I kinda feel that Americans like sweetness best. I'm a savory person and would always prefer salty chips or meat over donuts.
Hahahaha I loved this video. Thank you. I served 32 years in Australian Air Force. I joined at 70kg and when I retired I was 112kg. The food was great :)
Do we blame the MREs or the "chairforce" ? 😂👍
The chair force. They were called ratpacks in my day for good reason.😂@@bc4yt
I can understand that. Wow! That's over a 50% gain! Couldn't use Aussie MREs for a weight loss program, for sure. TFW
I could take a guess why hahaha... The Army sleeps under the stars, The Navy navigates by the stars, The Air Force sleeps 5 stars 😂
Air Force really when did you clowns eat rats you have never seen the bush you weak pricks
Enjoy watching your videos, Thank you for serving!!!! Keep being you 🙏🏾 God Bless you and your son
Back in my day the Vegemite tubes were called "Yeast Extract" lol. And they were a God send. I used to collect them out of my rat packs and keep them in my sleeve pocket. On a hot day in Northern Australia(everyday) Ide dig them out and suck it right of the tube. Replenished your salt levels right to where they needed to be.
That's what a few other viewers have said....about sucking it right out of the tube. Welcome aboard and TFW!
They contain a good amount of sodium and potassium which is lost in sweat.
@@MeAncient it's also chock full of vitamin B, a real energy booster all 'round!
That’s what a few of us in the AAC used to do during AFX and bivouacs, we started doing it after meeting this one bloke up north at lavarack barracks.
That's why it was supplied to soldiers in WWll , different militaries had Promite , Marmite , Bovral and we had Vegemite which was developed because the wait for Marmite from Britain took too long , soldier would be supplied with yeast extract ,- marmite in WWl for its Vitamin B and yep salt...
I remember on Exercise 'Pitch Black' 1990 in NT the discussion about vegemite with US soldiers back then we had biscuits , some would add vegimite but like some fellas hesr said , suck it straight from the 15g tube , like the condensed milk , which turned brown in the heat but safe ..The sausage and veg from the D pack was army gourmet in the bush..
I think the CRs didn't change much until 2001 ? Some blokes here would know ..
I had to come back a watch this again I love these videos, they are so fun and entertaining!
we used to carry big tubes of condensed milk in our webbing back in the early 80s in Australia and suck on them while on patrol to keep energy up, they also made one with coffee premixed back then
James, love hearing the info from 'back then.' That was my time as well. TFW
Thank you for your service.
The coffee condensed milk tubes only recently got discontinued by Nestle. I used to buy it a coles and suck on it at school. That was back in the 70's and 80s. My poor constitution these days has put those luxuries in the past now. Gawd now I have to drink decaf, and there I was as a teenager sucking down whole tubes of the stuff.
was it condensed milk or sweeten milk? i was in the early 2000s but because i don't like milk would trade it for the can cheese. i made an abomination with the cheese, made a stone cook top with 3 blocks of cheese + the main meal and some water, the NCO came by and smelled it said don't try this again we don't want the smell to give our position away :D
@@sethjr9815 def condensed milk mate, you can still get it in the tubes, makes awesome coffee too
Like a toothpaste tube. Good stuff it was.
I was never in the australian army but I was in the army cadets for a few years. made CUO(cadet under officer) while I was there and once a year we used to go away for a 1-2 week camp(can't remember how long they were now, talking 15 years ago now) away at a training facility. the MRE's are awesome and I was always confused when hearing other countries complain. the hot chocolates with the chocolate bar melted into it with some sweetened condensed milk was my favourite while soaking wet under a hoochie. never had as much fun as when we were out there doing that stuff. great memories. learned how to survive, how to navigate and get to safety and all the medic stuff we learned is burned into my brain. learning how to lead a platoon has helped me often in my career. always regret never joining the military like I intended(a girl stopped with me and the feelings of love). enjoy your video's always.
You guys have an amazing 24 hour meal there, my friend. Welcome aboard and TFW!
Same,Padstow Army Cadets in NSW.
Not sure if it happened in a lot of the AAC units but up in QLD (Near lavarack barracks) but we’d trade our condensed milk, steak bars, yeast extract for other stuff we wanted from other rat packs
@thatweirdaussie1446 yeah some of us traded between the different letters but I genuinely enjoyed them all. Except for one of the pasta mains. It was gross. Haha.
That tube of sweetened condensed milk was a form of currency when I did army cadets 😅
The tip with using Vegemite for flavour is spot on. Mix with water. It can be used as a beef stock alternative in a pinch.
Vegemite as an additive to stock in soups etc. Extra salt and flavour, kind of like soy sauce in Asian cooking.
@@AndyViant Used in the right amount It ads Umami flavour which is and you're correct like what soy, oyster and fish sauce also do. It's because all of them contain higher levels of natural MSG, which when sensed on the tongue sends a signal to the brain apart from the excellent taste but that this meal has essential nutrients and benefits for our health.
My wife said she will try it on some of the soups/stews she puts together for me. TFW, Daniel and welcome aboard!
@MeAncient cheers, love your content. It's fun to see what different countries feed their soldiers.
Fantastic in gravies as well, like a nice roast meat gravy, adds that savoury saltiness, colours the gravy to a deeper brown, and even gives it a little bit of shine, gotta be careful not to go overboard though, or the gravy just tastes like weak vegemite. Not bad, exactly, but not what you're going for.
Finally another video from you. Love these videos
Glad you enjoy them. TFW, Matthew!
My kids are sick of hearing me walk around the house wondering when "Me Ancient" is going to make another vid :D
Today's Deep Thought.... "Would a Pineapple Upside Down Cake be right side up Down Under?" 🤔
Happy to see another ration review video. Hope you and yours had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Looking forward to another year of Me Ancient videos. 😎👍🇺🇸
Lance, why are you making me think this hard? TFW, as always.
Nope..I call them pineapple cake.
It's also a good tongue twister; say it five times fast!
Good to see the matches haven't been fixed in the last 44 years. Returned grunt, 27 years. P.S. That 24 CRP1 Man is roughly three times the size of the ones we used at the start of the 80's. We had nearly all tins back then, we were mean lean fighting machines back then...hungry, but lean ha! Thanks mate, cheers.
Marc, I think we were all lean fighting machines, back then......Welcome aboard and TFW!
Miss you guys, pops, been busy putting my life back on track, things are doing much better, and mental health is great. I'm happy to see you doing so well.
Glad to hear that on your end! Keep in touch! TFW, as always.
I love your videos.😃
Love the videos. Thank you for your service. I absolutely love you praying before every meal on the channel.
Thank you for your kind words. The prayer got cut while editing. Had to.....(long story) TFW
Ha interesting. All my time in the Aussie Army, F.R.E.D had a different acronym than “FIELD RATION…” 😂
I know, right? TFW and welcome aboard.
Fucking Ridiculous Eating Device hahaha 🤣, ex digger here. 🤙
Good to see Australia putting in the effort to keep the diggers well feed. Awesome vid mate👍
They do a great job with these MREs. TFW
Thank you for always making my day better when I get the notification for a new video. God bless you sir.
Austin, I'm happy to make your day better whenever I can. TFW
We were Guinea pigs for foil packed rations when I was in the Australian Army in ‘72. One thing sent us into the field with was freeze dried meals in foil which you were supposed to add water to and heat in the foil pack on a little Hexamine fuel cooker ( which also came in the pack ). They were really awful, but being resourceful Diggers we always carried our own ‘ Jack Rations ‘ to supplement what was issued, which sort of defeated the purpose of the field trials. I also remember concentrated butter in little cans.
I loved the freeze dried meats. Especially the pork. Call me crazy, but I did like it, Paul. TFW
Some advice. Cheese and Vegemite on the bread. The cheese helps smooth it out. We call it cheesymite or cheddarmite over here. It's an Australian delicacy to have a cheese and Vegemite sandwich but we go well on the butter in said sandwich which also helps smooth out that Vegemite. As for the sweetened condensed milk, add that to your muesli to sweeten it up or suck it right out the tube if you don't like it in the coffee. With the average ingredients of CR1M or crim, you can actually make some interesting stuff. Mash up the biscuit component of the jam biscuit and some sweetened condensed milk with a little coffee granules and chill and you'll have a nice coffee fudge biscuit.
I love orange marmalade. Been buying Smuckers brand for years. My grandfather always ate it on his toast, so I followed in his footsteps.
It's good stuff, for sure, Jared. I think I've had some in the past that wasn't as sweet as the Aussie one. It was definitely some quality marmalade. TFW!
Love the videos and happy to see you back in action! Happy New Year, sir!
Good to be back and TFW
The All Fruit Bar is probably the best item in the ration pack and comes in every MRE. The one item nearly never traded.
That's interesting. TFW
Tell us more lore around the fruit bar? If someone saved your life did you owe your next fruit bar to them? what happens if you found that 1/10 000 person that didn't like fruit bar, would arguments in the platoon break out about who is trading with that person?
@@coolhandluke1503 You definitely owed your fruit bar to them, and if you stated you didnt like the fruit bar you would be questioned by almost everyone.
❤❤❤❤❤ love from Australia.Clay 🎉🎉🎉 firstly Sir thank you for your selfless service both past and present? You are Awesomely amazing 👏 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
You are too kind. I only served 4 years active duty and 2 inactive. It's been over 40 years since I was active duty. TFW, Clay
Love your videos! Surprised not to see you pray in this one! God bless brother!
I was wondering if I just missed it or if he just didn’t do it
Alan, ended up having to cut it 'cause of peripheral noise issues. It was there, it just got cut. TFW
@@MeAncient understand! Enjoyed the video! To me, veggie-mite is not very tasty! lol
I was saying the same thing 😊
Aussies mostly don't pray. Unless we're eating a vindaloo or we drank a whole slab of beer, sometimes both.
I absolutely loved this experience - well done!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for your kind words and TFW!
We’re happy little Vegemites, as bright as bright can be,
We all enjoy our Vegemite for breakfast, lunch and tea,
Our mummy says we’re growing stronger every single week,
Because we love our Vegemite, we all adore our Vegemite -
It puts a rose in every cheek!
We’re growing stronger every week!
Great video, that MRE is packed with items good to take on the run and some excellent meals. Good video Sir, glad to see you making some videos again.
Joao, lots of good items in that MRE, for sure. TFW and happy to be putting a few videos out again.
They provide lots of snacks, just in case you don't get time to actually have a meal, or can't risk a fire for a meal.
@@AndyViant The Portuguese army does the same, we prefer nuts, raisins, dry fruits, and the enormous variety of canned preserved goods, especially fish. But a good MRE anyway.
Have to have quality meals that taste good in the field it is a very important morale booster as something to look forward too. Fred is not a giant can opener it is a spoon that is a can opener ;) Meals have little salt and pepper so you can adjust for individual taste as you would know and why so many sauces are included. Vegemite is very multipurpose and something you experiment with for taste yet if you only like a very small amount on bread you might also find having it straight on a spoon and just slowly sucking on it also tastes good. Good to see ya like Aussie tucker.
I DEFINITELY liked the Aussie MRE! The whole thing was dandy tasting! TFW and welcome aboard.
Been a while, always love your videos, wish they were more often. You guys dang near live at the beaches
It's been way too long, I must admit. Sickness, traveling, and generally busy life seems to have gotten in the way on this one. Hopefully not as long between next videos. TFW!
it's always a good day when Me Ancient drops a new video...thank you brother 🙂✌
My pleasure. TFW
How did i not see this 3 days ago, made my night tho, you and your boys are always putting out awsome content
Glad you liked it! As always, TFW, Perrys!
Great to see another video! God Bless you guys and a Happy New Year!
Justin, back atcha! TFW, as always
Really enjoyed again. Keep em coming. Snowed in today in Houston Tx. Had a great video to watch though.
Michael, it's snowing right now here in the Florida Panhandle. I'm trying to upload a pix onto my home page for subscribers. You Tube having issues with uploading right now. TFW
Love the video mate and good to see you starting to like the Vegemite put some Vegemite on toast with butter for breakfast you will love it thanks for another fantastic video and I will see you in the next one from Perth Western Australia 🇦🇺
I'll do it. Take care out there in Perth! TFW
I need to replenish my FRED collection. I keep giving them away to friends that camp. Having said that I keep 2 in my caravan/camper
Good idea to always keep FRED around....TFW, Kevin.
Love the family combo videos eating some mre's and fishing and cooking the catch up fresh is fantastic.
It's lots of fun, for sure. TFW
I love some Vegemite. You used the perfect amount. Good to see you try it.
I learned from the comments on my first Ozzy MRE review. I used WAY too much and y'all let me know!
The fruit bar is dark because of oxidisation of the apple banana. As some of the preservatives that are legal in America are illegal here in Australia. As I mentioned to you before in a previous post on Aussie MREs we have breakfast lunch and dinner as our 3 main meals and morning tea ( smoko )and afternoon tea ( smoko ). Because here in Australia as the general time for lunch is about 30 minutes and about 10 minutes for smoko as we are not paid for breaks or lunch and still work a 8 hour day or more depending on industry worked. The pub I worked in started at 10am for meal prep served from 11:30 until 2pm had a 2 hour break started at 4 pm for meal prep served dinner From 5 pm until 8 pm then clean up and leave around 10 pm if there is no function on. So basically we are using the lollies and biscuits for the energy boost.
Plenty of food in those Aussie 24 hour MREs for snacks at any time. TFW, Amanda.
Very enjoyable as always. I always get hungry when I watch your videos 😂
That's funny, I get hungry when I edit the videos. TFW, John.
Brother the jack links steak bars were normally kept closely inside puch obtaining body heat during colder season, when they are room temperature they are easier to chew, i still get them to this day as it holds a warning tradition and have shared some with my wife who doesn't mind them either, the two flavours available these days are pepper steak and teriyaki, every single fruit bar or log has been dark brown in colour as long as i can remember
Thanks for giving me the fruit bar insider info. I was wondering about that. TFW
Funny an Australian pack has American condiments. We have tomato sauce here not catshit, lol. You can actually buy here in Australia condensed milk with coffee in a tube, good for camping. Cheers Graham
Cheers, Graham! Welcome aboard and thanks for the comments. Oh, TFW!
Yep... Never seen katshit tomato in my pantry
Sadly not anymore..Nestle still makes that particular Coffee & Sweetened condensed milk mix product in cans, so it is still available..
But ridiculously, not in the once-beloved soft plastic tubes, (like they still do for condensed milk!)..That were always far more useful & common among my generation..both the C-milk and the Coffee + C-milk were always brought in the soft tubes.
It was as kids..
It was as teens..
It was when i was a Cadet..
It was when I joined the Army..
And it was..right up until we suddenly, and without any explanation at all, just couldn't find, source or buy it in the tube anymore..
And even the supermarkets couldn't tell us why..it just "Wasn't available anymore".
Not the Coffee + Milk one.
I've still, even decades later, never forgiven Nestle for that! 🤣
And I refuse to buy it in cans, so I just got used to making my own recipe for the stuff at home, using condensed milk & my own imported 'Black Rifle' brand coffee from the US.
Everyone loves the stuff, and my mates are always wanting some of my home-made version whenever they catch up with me.
We've refined it slightly a few times over the years. Great stuff.
Sorry Nestle, you screwed the pooch on that one, and probably cost yourself thousands..(yup, probably literally!)..in lost revenue from me alone, over the decades..for that decision!
Lots of my mates all felt the same during my military service days..we all remembered it as a camping & outdoors staple as kids.
We even just used to suck the stuff straight from the tube at times!
Which is probably what prompted some nanny-state Karen or other helicopter parent, to complain to Nestle about it in the first place! 😊
Another good video yall, I joined our corps ab a year 1/2 ago and I always figure it cool to see what the old devils think of newer MREs. Semper
🌎🦅⚓
Welcome aboard, Devil Dog. What's your MOS? Where did you go to boot camp? TFW
Again a nice video! I never heard of vegimite but its also available here in The Netherlands. ( had to google that ) The MRE is big! A lot of nice things in it.
It was a great 24 hour MRE, for sure. TFW!
Good to see a new video out. Australia is on my list to Visit for sure.
Come on over your welcome
Hope you get there soon! TFW
You made the right choice with the vegemite this time mate!
The only thing you've gotta give it a whirl with now, is a slice of toast, heavy laden in melted butter, and then spread the vegemite across evenly in about the exact amount you've done there.
For a single piece of toast, you'd want to use about half a teaspoon spread across it.
I'll try and remember that, if I can find another one. TFW and welcome back!
Been quite a while since the last video! keep them up and do more Canadian IMP's
If I could get some Canadian MREs, I would.......TFW
Oh man! Active Major! Gave the boys a laugh! Everything backwards! And then the cadet's comments? 😂😂 Thanks from the boys in the field! Vegemite and cheese sanwhich, mate! 😂😂
From one vet to another, I'm happy to have brightened your day. Welcome aboard and TFW, Major!
Not a military context but as a bush fire fighter we often get MREs which appear to be from the exact same supplier as the military ones. They are superb after a 12+ hour shift with skipped meal breaks and 0 energy left in the tank. Nothing fancy but good enough that youll want to eat it. Always love the vegemite and the luke warm meal
I can see Vegemite growing on me, for sure. Welcome aboard and TFW
Glad you’re keeping warm! Got some snow finally in MD! That looks like the Gulf Coast
It is, indeed, Geoff. TFW!
Hope that you and your family are doing well and I'm praying for you all 🙏 and thank you for sharing this with me 💓
Felisa, I appreciate your prayers for my family....truly. TFW
Thank you Mr me ancient for the vid.hope I get to meet you wen I relocate to south Carolina and do some me time with my brother Micah ❤
The idea of a protein drink isn't to have it taste good but to help add a healthy supplement to your diet.just like brussel sprouts dry and awful but good
Sounds like fun. Maybe one of these days. TFW
Happy new year chief hope you and yours are doing well. Hello to all the family! Have a great day!
Ryan
Ryan, thank you for that. We're doing well and TFW!
Wow, what a pack! How much did it set you back? Last I checked these Aussie ones are pretty pricey.
I can't remember....I believe it was about $60 US. TFW!
Thanks mate for doing this one I'm from West Aus 👍
Mick, that's the Outback, right? Gold out there in some spots. TFW
@MeAncient All through Western Australia outback 😁👍
Hello there me ancient good to see you again and I do like the mre video and I love apple tuna salad and it’s great for sandwiches 👍
Andrew, I like that idea! Tuna and apple salad. Ace and I might catch a tuna while we're here in Florida and I'll have to get a recipe if we do. TFW
Thank you for your service. And a great video to.
Thank you for the kind words. TFW, Jay
Great ration, great video.... great guys ..... keep it up 😊
Mark, you are too kind. TFW and we will, Lord willing.
You are lucky dear brother in Christ to get to taste these delights. I personally don't have the means to buy this ration even if we Norwegians are well off considering the economic climate at the moment. The problem is everything has gotten so darn expensive that the cost of living crisis can even be felt here in one of the richest nation on earth.........
God bless and lots of love from Norway..........
Thank you for your kind words.
Awesome! An American who knows how to use Vegemite!
Further on in the vid, one thing to consider is that Americans are conditioned to a far sweeter palate than Australians.
In the USA, corn syrup and sugar are present in almost all foods.
Although Australian mainstream consumers are getting more of a sweet tooth, at this stage, at least it appears that the military might be the last bastion - as they should be! 😂😂
Just going out on a limb here, but I am guessing that the young fella on the other side of the table has a sweet tooth? 🎉🎉
Seeing this new upload really made me happy
I'm happy to be a small part of making someone's day happy. TFW
We love our Australian brothers and sisters ! ❤️ 🦘
Love you to mate 🇦🇺🇺🇸

Awesome, awesome as usual
Glad you liked it! TFW
First off: What a beautiful dang backdrop!
It is a beautiful place to be this time of year. TFW
I like to see when you "mix it up" with these, very good review!
I'm always looking to keep things interesting. TFW, as always.
Wondering where you get a lot of these MREs! I imagine viewers send them in but some of them Id love to order and try myself, thanks for the new video!
I have some links and you can do a search on your favorite search engine. You should be able to find some. TFW
@@MeAncient Thank you ill start searchin!
Those CR1Ms are a tasty, filling ration! Thanks for sharing!!!!
Those are really good, Matt. I prefer them to eating 3 individual US MREs, for sure. TFW
Yeap, Marmalade has the fruit peel in it as well, that's the sharpness. Jam is similar, but without the fruit peel.
Aussie cheeses tend to be stronger flavoured than in America. I've lived in the U.S.
And you got the vegemite spot on. Well done.
Paul, I loved that pack! Better than 3 USA MREs, for sure. TFW
Another interesting mre meal, thanks Me Ancient 🙂
My pleasure and as always, TFW, Srijan.
Cool to see they changed the yeast extract tubes to vegemite, curious on what else they've changed
Welcome aboard and I'm happy to share a little 'cool' into your life. TFW
Food for 24 hours. Called ration pack for a reason, ration food to last for 24 hours whilst in the field. Not just one breakfast, one lunch and one dinner with snacks for one day but to last for all meals for two days.
2 days is 48 hours, this is a 24 hour ration pack. 1 breakfast, 1 lunch and 1 dinner with snacks
Well, a 24 hour pack would be for a single day, but I think there was enough food for more than one day, for sure. See below and TFW, Lynne.
Cheese and Vegemite ❤
I'll try it soon.....my next Ausie MRE review. TFW
Aussies invented the rat pack and the Fred, I think we pretty much nailed it. I miss living off these out bush.
Are you not able to buy them? Welcome aboard and TFW
@MeAncient not allowed to resale them. Have to buy them from over seas sites and the cost is often insane
@@solreaver83you can buy commercial versions here. 50 bucks for a 24hr mre. I've been meaning to buy one to see if they are the same and just have a different outter package or if they are completely different. Maybe someone could tell me so I don't waste money hahaha.
@tulmar4548 I'm not talking commercial, I'm talking real millitary rations.
@@solreaver83 the companies that supply our rations don't just supply our military , they also have their commercial side. You might wanna have a look , maybe buy one and see. Thats why I said I've been meaning to buy one to.
We used to make mash ups of everyone's rations during lul times in my section. I actually miss them sometimes its a solid meal. I'm surprised the chocolate wasn't completely white like the ones I experienced. It made it taste unique from the aging.
Some of our M&Ms were packaged YEARS beforehand before they got to us hahaha still tasted the same though.
These things cost a shit load of coin to buy in surplex stores over here in Australia, I wish I got hold of a few before I discharged, it'd still be good today and I got out in 2012.
The cotton wool with the matches make a great fire starter for kindling BTW, that's why it's in there.
I just remembered that in recruit training when I first joined we had a bloke who traded everyone in the platoon his biscuits and sweet snacks for everyone's tins of cheese 🤢
He was our Gomer Pile, dropped back 3 times to our platoon and constantly did stupid things like point his rifle out of his window and such at other training platoons.
He fell into a pit during our final field ex and broke his leg 😂 suffice to say we were glad to say goodbye to him.
Those field rations are the best I've seen.
Great video, I would have eaten the mashed potatoes and jerky with the mushroom soup like a gravy!
I did do the mushroom soup with the spuds off camera when I finished everything. TFW
This is a gourmet feast compared to what we got in the 80s
It's gourmet to most any MREs I have tried, whether single meals or 24 hour types. TFW and welcome aboard, Roger.
Cheese, cheddar, also known as bung-hole. Eat as soon as possible to reduce bowel movements to one in three days.
😂
Yeow! I went 7 days w/o while in bootcamp some 44 plus years ago. I thought something was wrong with me.....TFW

Vegemite and cheese is a good combo
That sounds good. Next time......TFW
@@MeAncienthave them with the cream crackers or use the crackers with the tuna
same thing happened with coffee and chocolate especially in UK went backwards and forwards between good and bad and all levels in between at least we don't have to worry about corn syrup 🤣 Vegimite and cheese is also a good combo
I'm going to try me some Vegemite and cheese, for sure. TFW and welcome aboard!
When not 'out in the scrub' but in the Field HQ areas; the ADF supply 'Hot Box' Meals. Sort of like pre-packaged 'Airline meals':
This is funny, I was actually watching an older Me Ancient video when this one came out
Welcome to the latest, my friend. And TFW!
Best MRE Reviewer 🌟🌟
You are very kind and I thank you. TFW!
For any Americans who don't like Vegemite, the trick is to start with heavily buttered bread, that's how it's served to children to offset the bitterness and you only need to eat it like that a couple times to develop a taste for it. It's not a conventionally good tasting food but your gut will like it, which changes how your brain interprets the taste, so that once you're used to it (although tastes exactly the same) you'll think it tastes amazing.
Next time I am able to find an Aussie MRE, I'm going to try that bread w/ butter idea. TFW
@@MeAncient Don't eat it straight out of the jar after midnight or you'll turn into a bogan.
Howdy Amigo! I only lucked into 1 CRIM, and it was freaking excellent! SCM should be included in all rations. Best multitasker ever. Works on solids and liquids. I got 2 FREDS, always need A backup. I caught NZ and Aussie joke, LOL. Small island. Ky weather sux, be glad you in FLA. I shall reserve comment on protein drink. All I can say, is not my favorite. Texturally challenged here. Thank gosh, I am not the only one who hates soupy oatmeal, muesli, porridge. I like thick as well. There is A lot of food in these rations, agreed. Leftover vegemite, works well in foods as salt substitute. I am glad you enjoyed most of your meals. Mains and sides looked awesome. Cool ration and review. Peace from Ky. John. Have fun, enjoy!
Thanks for the comments, John. Stay warm and keep your powder dry there in Ky! TFW
@@MeAncient , I shall endeavor to do all ! LOL.
12:29 That pack of Tuna there was literal gold out field. You can't buy it in the shops for some reason but it was the best tasting tuna, way better than the green one which was way more common. Essentially a whole meal on its own.
It was flavorful as can be, mate! TFW
In the UK we call those biscuit jam sandwich "Jammie Dodgers", a traditional favourite in the biscuit isle of the supermarket. It's a shame these are so hard to get and expensive when you can get them.
In Australia they're "Strawberry Shortcake". Jammy Dodgers are available out here in the same way Tim Tams are available there as a "specialty" or "imported" food. Both are similar, Aussie version a little less sweet.
I love the local nomenclature. TFW, Andrew.
I loved the noodles in the ration when I was in the ADF and I remember we joked about the anzac biscuit being a ballistic weapon as it was so hard lol
They were, shall I say, crunchy. TFW
Just found your channel. I'm not of military background but at 30 minutes, you mention the small ball of cotton being used to stop the matches rattling in the packaging. This is probably true but I imagine it could also be used as a firestarter if needed.
That was another thought I had. Maybe both? Welcome aboard and TFW!
vegemite is good with cheese too. used about the right amount though. ideally better with butter but i guess thats hard to come by in an mre. your condensed milk looked a funny colour though... might have been out io date?
I'm looking forward to finding and reviewing another Aussie MRE so I can try that Vegemite/Cheese combo. I'm thinking the condensed milk may very well have been past due. Welcome aboard and TFW.
Interesting to see how the packs have changed since I was in the Aust Army back in the 1990's where nearly everything was in tins - rat pack menu C used to be my fav :)
I'd love to get my hands on one of those, for sure. TFW and welcome aboard.
The cup canteen is where we get all our hot water from it's quite normal to stop for 5 minutes just to make a cup of coffee on the go. The solid fuel is given desperately but the matches in the rations are for the heximine stove
I wish the MRE would have come with some heximine. We shaved and drank coffee out of our canteen cups. One good rinse and you were ready to shave......TFW
*Salutes* you are a boss as alwys man
