When I was a kid, my babysitter had a '58 Premier, white like this one. She also had a '60 Mark V parked in the backyard. The Premier was her daily driver. It was a big, beautiful tank of a car.
Wow. At first I this was my dad's car as he sold his to someone in Minnesota in 1962. When I saw the interior, I know it wasn't, but it still brought back memories. It was the very first car I ever drove at the age of 15; narrow roads with curbs. I drove it many times after that. The car was one of the smoothest driving cars I've ever driven with more than adequate power. Handled corners just as smoothly.
My Grandfather owned this model in the gold color. He drove Buicks and Chryslers, by 1959 he was ready to get rid of the overheating 57 Special coupe. Never could fix it, over 80 degrees and less than 20 mph it would boil over. I commented elsewhere that my Father thought little of the Buick as compared to his 56 Chrysler. Grampa wanted to move up to a Cadillac, but being a bit conservative in matters of style, he declared the Caddy too God Damned Gaudy. Being about 7 at the time who knew what gaudy was about! I remember the power windows in the Lincoln and how they magically stopped working,while I was jacking with them, after all it was the first car in the family with the feature. I know now about the little switch on Grampas door! He throughly enjoyed that car, and drove it longer than any of the others. This car really impressed me as kid at the time , it still does all these years later. Good vid even if the narrator didn't know about the corrosive properties of polished stainless brightwork!
What a magnificent example of this so classic Lincoln automobile! To answer "UncagedJDOG89" I would venture to say the difference between the Continental and the Lincoln models are the grill, side moldings, and rear tail area. I know the tail-lights are different and the interior of the Continental is different with more upscale leather interiors. The convertible did have a rear window that went down by power, and the convertible was only available in the Continental series. Great classic automobiles that are now being recognized as great, beautiful classic post war luxury cars.
Michael, in 58 & 59 the Continental came in a Convertable, Sedan, and Coupe, all had the rear window that went down, and 3 smaller tail lights. As a little Kid, my neighor had a 58 Lincoln like this, and another Neighbor had a sister that came over all the time, and she had a White 4dr Continental with the back window that went down. They were more luxurious and expensive than the Lincoln Premier. Lincoln lost so much money on this car, by 60 there was only one car, and MacNamara almost shut Lincoln down, but the redone 61 came out with such success, that it saved Lincoln. I love these too, that Lincoln of my nieghbors really impressed me at age 4 and I always wanted one of these
The 1958 and 1959 Lincoln Premiere had the "solid" rear window, that did not retract as did the Continental. My father owned one 1958 and a 1959. The Premiere's have larger tail lights, and the 1958 rear bumper was larger, e.g., wider chrome across the expanse, than the one used in 1959. Some of the 430 MEL engines had triple deuce carbs, and others had one huge carb. All the MEL's had an incredibly huge air cleaner.
My dad had a 59 Lincoln. All black, 4 doors, a big flat tombstone dash with no gauge pods on top, and a steering wheel hub the size of a tea cup saucer. Gas must have been cheaper than water.
Probably still has it's original new car smell. Ours did, even though it was well used and worn. This model was our family's daily driver up until 1980. Went from this to a Plymouth Horizon. I’ve got a 91 Vandura if anyone is interested in their own A-Team van project. 130k miles, runs like a top. Everything else is makeover ready.
Sir, you didn't mention the neat way it sends cold air through the front doors with vents to the rear seat that passengers can adjust to their liking. Very nice showing.
Not sure if the Lubrication issues were solve because in the early Premiers there was an optional Auto-lube system where a grease pump was mounted by the Master Cylinder and had about 12 plastic lines going to key spots for the front-end geometry . You would buy a 7 oz Can of grease that had a scew-on cap where the threads matched the hole threads to scew the can in upside down . Lincoln created that auto version of a Ball-Joint that had the grease nipples but according to the Manual you had to push the Lube button to the left of the steering wheel on the dash every 50 miles on the highway drives while a new can would be 250-300 application to Push the Lube button to give you over 1000 miles before changing the can . It was used from 1956 to 1960 while GM and FORD offered the dealer Installed version around 1960 , but the price for Lube Jobs came down to where the Auto-Lube option wasn't worth it unless you drove a lot on the highway in the Sales business . Older cars needed regular chores done to it which is why you saw some of the Movies with a Mansion where the Personal driver for the Rich had to be to a quasi Mechanic as well as washing the car . Beautiful car that can carry 5 adults in comfort with a huge trunk for baggage .
I much preferred these 58/59/60 Lincolns over Cadillac and Imperial. However, once the clean, 1961 Lincoln hit the streets, all previous years were quickly dated. Still, this is a wonderful car to cherish forever.
I saw a 58 Lincoln for sale and discovered that the 59-60 is the better looking of the 3 year run of this design , they made the front fender wheel opening better and bumper is better, much better
Ha! yes! I had a 77 coupe 460. I never got to 110 (85 for me) but I'm sure it rode as well as it did at 70. Best riding car I ever owned. My 89 TC was close though.
Congrats to the buyer whoever he was. I could just imagine someone's well to do gray haired aunt driving this to her bridge club meet. Where were the a/c vents? Lincoln hid them real good wherever they were.
My father owned the same color and year, seat belts too, he sold it in 1970 for 250.00, with 84,000 miles. was in very good condition, I used to wash t and kept it on the garage. He was driving Cadillac, since 1963, the old Lincoln stayed in the garage till sold. No one wanted these then was very big I think 5,000 lbs.
Oh, oh I graduated from high school in 1963 and the consensus of the time was that Cadillac had a huge PR but the creme de la creme was the Lincoln and the one your father owned. I loved it then and I admire it today. I have a boiled down version of a Mercedes and a M4 BMW. These are the times of the idiot Obama and his edicts of a certain amount of MPG. So, the cars are made of aluminum today and really are suicide machines. These cars were beautiful and impressive even today.
Great car! I have never been a fan of the slanted headlight arrangement. That was a turn off for me on the '59 Buick Electra too. That said, other than that headlight arrangement, these were truly MAGNIFICENT automobiles. They had a gorgeous profile. These were absolute luxury in motion!

These fell out of favor in the public eye upon the release of the 1961 Lincoln Continental with it's iconic suicide doors; made so famous by the Presidential X-100 limousine. What a time capsule this automobile is. I'm sure it sold for more than it cost new.
It was a normal automobile. This was before the lying "fuel saving" junk of the 1970's. The era of double digit inflation and double digit unemployment. The peanut Carter ruined America. Thanks to the loser Obama, Carter moved up one notch.
@John Texas up to a couple years ago, the Escalades handled a bit different than a Tahoe, had a bigger engine also. A friend of mine worked at a luxury used car lot about 15 years ago, and moving the SUVs around you could tell the difference
@John Texas they sure looked better, until GM redid the Denali . Lincoln started it with the Navigator so everyone got on the band wagon, including Lexus, and they sell them, My point was the earlier Escalades had a bigger engine and handled differently but I think that all ended about 10 years ago
but people who bought those luxury cars that our parents bought or maybe we did later, are either few or dead, most people today want a SUV or a smaller sporty luxury car, nothing like the big cars of the past, its a bit sad when Lincoln brings back the Continental and they sell just a few of them

My experience is Pot metal was designed to have a max life of 50 yrs. It literally starts puffing from the inside out., It all needs to be copper plated to hold it together then triple chromed to preserve. Very expensive to do..thousands and thousands and thousands to save all the pot metal.
The tires cannot be original, I would love to own this car, I would treat it like a baby, drive it only on Sunny days. Awesome, someone give it to me, please?
Obviously it is a gorgeous car....the announcer said it spent the last 35 years in a climate control building...........why would it look any differently now, then from the day it went into storage?

The answer is fairly simple: the same kind of person that would live in a house with a living room straight out of Architectural Digest that everybody walks by and admires but never steps in much less feels comfortable sitting down--and probably a pretty good bet that all the furniture will be in fitted plastic covers.
my father had a 1958 lincoln continental convertable 2 door that was driveable but needed to be restored to be a really nice car and it was suppose to go to my sister after he passed away and i was suppose to get his 1936 dodge brothers coupe and he had that in his will but his second wife destroyed the will and claimed there was none and stole both cars and the dodge was titled in my name but nobody seemed willing to help us and now she has moved out of state. her name is nadeen peterson unless she has changed it or is using one of her other names. i think i was told she moved to montana or minasota so if anyone knows her dont get involved with her because she will rob you blind and ruin your life
@@imperiallebaron2134 I believe the Continental Division was dissolved and blended into Lincoln in 58. Some 58's were called Continental III's without the Mark designation. Then Continental Mark 4 in 59 and Mark 5 in 1960. The Lincolns were Capri and Premiere. Same basic car, just different trim levels. The Continental's were top of the line with the Breezeway rear window. Starting in 1961 the only designation was Lincoln Continental.

It may not be "restored" per se but it has been repainted and detailed. Yes, this car is in magnificent condition. Still, the styling was rather odd. A bit too bulky as well. Ford Motor came out with a much better luxury sedan with the '61 Continental.
Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party and Greta FFF Inc. gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one state operated central gas station per city. From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. so beware of expensive cars today they will be forbidden and worthless tomorrow!!!! Beware of combustion cars!!!!
Garish land yachts they were. There are a lot of waves in the front bumper and that indicates it was redone. The repaint killed whatever special status the seller was trying to achieve.

I used to vacation Ogden, Utah to Las Vegas in my 1975 Lincoln. 110 miles per hour and 11 miles per gallon with airconditioning.

There is a near identical '59 that shows in this area, but it has leather. I've had 18 of these 58-59-60's.only drawback, they all got TEN mpg
The "other" drawback is the tire size: 9.50 x 14. Only these Lincolns and a few Chrysler IMPERIALS used this size. Cadillacs never went to a 14".
If one can afford to buy it, don't think fuel consumption would be a concern...da

Pot metal is cast zinc and thus very porous. It could have been electroplated, but car mfrs never intended on cars lasting 50 years.
But what was it rated for mileage, & what did you average with the air conditioning on?!!!!
Very Cute :-) Actually, my guess would be 6-7 City and Maybe 11-13 Highway. But back then gas was like 25 cents a gallon and no one cared !!

Can anyone explain to me the difference between the Continental and the Premiere? I notice there are subtle changes around the car.
The Continental was the top-of-the-Lincoln-line.. in '58 - '60. The Premier was the middle-of-the-line. I forget the name of the bottom-of-the-line.

Obviously it is a gorgeous car....the announcer said it spent the last 35 years in a climate control building...........why would it look any differently now, then from the day it went into storage?

The wind noise in the microphone is totally irritating. I watched with closed captioning. And I read an earlier comment: "Unfortunately, the only way to keep something perfect is to never use it. What kind of pleasure is something that is stashed away in a storage facility?" The answer is fairly simple: the same kind of person that would live in a house with a living room straight out of Architectural Digest that everybody walks by and admires but never steps in much less feels comfortable sitting down--and probably a pretty good bet that all the furniture will be in fitted plastic covers.

my father had one in same color and year
my father had a 1958 lincoln continental convertable 2 door that was driveable but needed to be restored to be a really nice car and it was suppose to go to my sister after he passed away and i was suppose to get his 1936 dodge brothers coupe and he had that in his will but his second wife destroyed the will and claimed there was none and stole both cars and the dodge was titled in my name but nobody seemed willing to help us and now she has moved out of state. her name is nadeen peterson unless she has changed it or is using one of her other names. i think i was told she moved to montana or minasota so if anyone knows her dont get involved with her because she will rob you blind and ruin your life
lincolns and continentals were two different divisions back in those days! they made the continental the lincoln model starting in 1961!
Imperial LeBaron my fathers car was a lincoln continentel and it was a two door convertable it was a kind of rare car so i have been told

@@imperiallebaron2134 I believe the Continental Division was dissolved and blended into Lincoln in 58. Some 58's were called Continental III's without the Mark designation. Then Continental Mark 4 in 59 and Mark 5 in 1960. The Lincolns were Capri and Premiere. Same basic car, just different trim levels. The Continental's were top of the line with the Breezeway rear window. Starting in 1961 the only designation was Lincoln Continental.

I think I saw 17,789. And from it's condition, I would presume that to be original. At 6:38 and 11:06 you get a pretty good shot at the odometer.

The guy's name is Bob Mayar. He was a news reporter in Miami from the 60s to 90s. I guess he is dealing in vintage cars now.

It may not be "restored" per se but it has been repainted and detailed. Yes, this car is in magnificent condition. Still, the styling was rather odd. A bit too bulky as well. Ford Motor came out with a much better luxury sedan with the '61 Continental.

Green Peoples Party and Greta FFF Inc. gave order to shorten fuel supply
from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one state operated
central gas station per city. From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare
parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even
some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same
from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars
any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called
emissions and smoke crime. so beware of expensive cars today they will
be forbidden and worthless tomorrow!!!! Beware of combustion cars!!!!
