      We have to develop our own defence under European NATO which automatically excludes Hungary already, maybe with an advanced nuclear deterrent funded by all for equivalent numbers to Russia, we can already defeat Russia in a land war if required but we need to build up our defence industries, which should standardise, in the meantime!?!

    Several European states have expressed willingness to take more initiative within NATO in countering the challenge it faces. This includes old and new members as well as prospective members, namely Ukraine. The US administration has not supported them because it sees them as escalation. This leaves Europe in a precarious situation.

    We have to be able to defend ourselves, but it is no point in having USA in NATO if they will not help us defend the democracies and trade.
    The whole point of having NATO is that we are strong as an alliance and able to defend our way for life.
    Actually Trump and USA does not take credit for the change of philosophy in Europe. Putin deserves all the credit since 2014.

    • @TheLAGopher
      @TheLAGopher Місяць тому +1

      Putin has been selling the belief that big nations such as the USA,Russia, and China, should all have areas of influence they can dominate.
      For Russia,that is the former Soviet Baltic states,and former Warsaw Pact countries such as Poland and Romania. For China it's Taiwan
      and the First Island Chain. And for the USA it's Mexico and Latin America.

      Having said that, Europe will have to boost its defence spending.
      I was talking to someone who was in the RAF only a few months ago. He was saying that most, possibly all, RAF stations have no air defence. We have only one field deployable anti air radar system. In his view, it is impossible to properly defend the UK's air space.

      Regardless, the "peace dividend" appeared a credible notion until Russia started being aggressive again in 2008 (or Chechnya depending on your pov). The US had different security concerns than the EU. In fact, US's defence spending has been primarily about containing China since the last 10 years if not longer.

    Sadly nuclear deterrant favours an agressor. By definition the agressor has the upper hsnd from the start, because the victim is not agressive. In consequence the victim is more likley to believe that the agressor will actually use their nuclear weapons, and thus be intimidated. We see this scenario playing out now. Why is Putin's nuclear detrrant effective but the West's is not ? The nuclear deterrant becomes a 'shield' allowing agressors to do as they like. The only way to counter this is to counter the agressors threat and to prevent the situation from continuing by defeating him with conventional weapons.

      it very simple. Russia is physically far from most of europe and the latter has not sense of danger or self preservation left after what they call the "peace dividend" (floating in pink feel good mist post cold war). Its no coincidence the ones you see arming rapidly and preparing for war are those who actually are next to the problem (poland, ukraine, estonia, latvia, lithuania, finland) while weak and indecisive government like Germany are prepping to slice their ukraine fund in half for next budget proposal. Never mind actual missiles can reach all of europe but here the logic comes in that deep down they dont believe it will ever happen if they "dont just escalate". This is sealed by the very weak and cowardly leadership in the US which is about to be replaced with a openly pro-putin administration

      Germany has reduced its military capacities in accordance with the Two-Plus-Four-Agreement of 1991, which was a condition for the unification and obtainment of full sovereignty, required especially by the British government. In fact, Margret Thatcher (the then Prime Minister) has torpedoed the agreement till the very end to prevent the unification.
      She herself told Gorbachev: “(it) would lead to a change to post war borders, and we cannot allow that because such a development would undermine the stability of the whole international situation and could endanger our security". Towards Germany’s federal president, Richard von Weizsäcker she said: “Her picture of Germany has evolved basically till 1942 and it hasn’t changed since.”
      Fintan O’Toole described in his book “The politics of pain” how after the German re-unification the English started to spook themselves into an anew fear of German domination by releasing books and movies entertaining alternative outcomes of the II. World War, imagine Germans strolling in English streets, German as the predominant language, shops offering predominantly German products, and shockingly! the German founding of a European Union.
      Mý own observation during debates regarding BREXIT suggests that people blaming all shortcomings of the UK government(s) would be the EU fault also think that the EU is controlled by Germany, supposely to keep the UK down.

    • @Finnishguy777
      @Finnishguy777 Місяць тому +35

      Maybe because it is both a strategic and economic interest of the USA? In addition to that, lumping all of Europe together is really annoying. Can you tell me how, for example, the USA has ever contributed to Finland's security or defense if we don't include joint exercises? Finland has always taken care of its defense matters by itself and will continue to do so in the future, in addition to that, the Baltic countries and Poland and Romania all manage their defense in a very exemplary manner, the Baltic countries are of course small, but they manage their affairs better when it comes to defense than many larger EU countries such as Germany, Be that as it may There are also countries in Europe that have never been anything like "free travelers" as certain people there claim, and the grouping of all European countries together is relatively annoying for those people who live in countries where defense issues are also taken care of. Besides, in the early days of NATO, the fact that the USA took care of the defense affairs of European countries was a result of the USA's own administration, it is pointless to blame the European countries for that. And don't get me wrong, you're absolutely right that some European countries should pay more attention to these things, but that doesn't remove the fact that there are also countries here that have already done it. or maybe it's "free travel" that Finland has actually bought weapon systems from the USA, which has benefited both countries so far, strengthened our own defense as well as the economy of the *USA, but maybe this country also needs to acquire weapon systems from somewhere else in the future, because the USA will not seem as reliable in the future as an ally rather than as a trading partner. The EU region is currently the USA's largest trading partner, how do you think the situation will turn out if the USA isolates itself from the rest of the world? Some Americans also seem to have completely forgotten the fact that the USA is the only country in the entire history of NATO that has ever activated article five, the European allies did come to help you in the stupid "war on terror", but apparently this fact is not remembered by you, e.g. 15 Finnish soldiers died in Afghanistan while helping in US operations and at that time we were not even part of the entire defense alliance.

      I totally agree with the Finnish guy.
      Another part of the reason is the question of abiding by agreements. Your word has been given to various nations, like the Philippines, Taiwan, S KOREA, Japan.
      By his peers Trump is a convicted liar. Lies throughout any official speaking, making his credibility and thereby USA's credibility be questionable.
      With the immunity changes by a very dodgy supreme Court, seems that USA may well be a dictatorship within a few yrs.
      Meanwhile, as stated by Putin, sorry Trump, he would withdraw support to Ukraine. Therefore cancelling agreements already made years ago. At a dangerous time in a dangerous way.
      Taiwan might be more worried don't you think?
      So perhaps we should all look elsewhere for goods and friendship.
      If Trump does not get in and USA sees sense, then perhaps the world will be safer.
      Good luck USA from 🇬🇧
