Loved this book so much! It was my first 5⭐️ read for 2024. I hadn't heard the NPR interview with Akbar, but the quotes you shared definitely made me want to check it out!

It's a great interview! The one he did with the Poured Over Podcast is also really good!

I was completely obsessed with this book and underlined and highlighted and added notes copiously throughout, including the quote from his dad that you shared which really impacted me. The ending was a little disappointing for me, but because it confused me so much, I could read it two completely different ways, I had to lose my attachment to reading it "right" to move on... but definitely want to reread it.

Yah the ending wasn't great for me but I loved the rest of it so much that I'll give it a pass!! I hope more people will read and love this one.

I'm so interested to know how you perceived the events at the end. What happened? Spoilers though.

The big reveal or the moment after when he's processing? The big reveal is impactful but predictable. The moments after where he's processing were confusing for me bc I don't know if he's just having a positive emotional swell at the end, if it's actually him maybe relapsing or if he's maybe dead (I'm trying not to have spoilers) it just felt so surreal compared to the rest of the novel. Does any of that make sense?

Yes, I thought he was dead, but also perhaps so is Z? Based on his absence and what I remember from Z and Dad's hangout... But ultimately I also cycled through all of your questions. As far as a big reveal, to me it becomes a small reveal in the context of everything unraveling into so many questions... Is he finally having a meaningful life or a meaningless death, what is the measure of either? I got the audiobook and it's great so I hope to finish relistening with an ear for foreshadowing. This is the kind of book that makes me a little obsessive. Thank you for responding, perfectly.

I can edit out if this is too far into spoilers

Thank you for recommendation! Can you also recommend a good Clarice Lispector book? What's the best to try first? Thanks!

I’m still making my way through her books but I think the short stories are a good place. If you get the complete collection you can see her style through out the years.

I just reviewed this one myself. I loved it so much but was not a huge fan of the ending.

The ending and the twist were the weakest parts.

@@NerdyNurseReads I agree. I wasn't huge on the twist, either. I do need to read more about the Iraq-Iran war, though.
