All of this information is 100% inaccurate. All of these pictures were strategically put in place to look like it was first hand knowledge that we knew Mr. Ferguson's background. I will be posting a video soon with the evidence showing I did not have any prior knowledge of his offense. And when we were made aware of it he was removed. I will have parent testimonies stating these facts. Stay tuned

As someone who’s been practicing martial arts for 34 years I have a few recommendations when trying to find a martial arts school. The number one thing is to go watch class a few times before doing a trial. While you watch look for instructors being particularly handsy with the kids. That’s a red flag. If it seems weird it is. Keep in mind some instructors have a healthy genuine friendship with their students. You will know the difference between that and something inappropriate.
Also look to see if what they’re teaching looks real or something mystical. If it looks mystical it’s BS! If they won’t let you watch class, run! Most legit places will let you do a trial period before you sign up. If not, go somewhere else.

Best advice for parents, have them the club ask if parents are allowed/encouraged to watch. If the answer's anything but a definite yes just maybe there's something they don't want you to see. For my kids class it's mandatory for the parents to be present and viewing the class. They are told to STFU if they try and coach from the sides but it's handy if there's an injury - give 'em an ice pack and send them off to mummy. But having the parents there watching everything makes sure I'm not teaching nonsense and also saves there being any misunderstanding if any child ever feels uncomfortable about what they're seeing or doing. Like escaping choke holds or mounts, some kids just lose their sh!t when you tell another kid to sit on them the first time.

I’m terms of recommending a school, do research to see what art you wanna try, try a trial class, look into the list of instructors, see if there’s a strong community of woman, make sure there’s no creeps, and if the gym has a positive atmosphere.

If someone wants to see if that martial art is for them or is interested in trying it. Go visit the school to see what the "feeling" is of the place and the teacher and instructors. Then go visit it again on another day so that you can see how it feels then.
Look up the reviews on what people are saying. (Keep in mind that people love to rant about any and everything. Some are legitimate. Much isn't. 🤔
Try to get a sense of what the instructors or head teacher feels about other martial arts. (That 1st and 2nd visit)

Just, damn. Thank you for doing the good work.
For years before watching this channel I would have said my advice for someone looking for a legitimate martial arts school was to watch a class and look for if people have injuries because physical safety is important. Then, look for psychological and social red flags like cult mentality and McDojo magic stuff. For a soft martial art, like Iaido, Tai Chi, Aikido, to make sure the school is of a real tradition and not a guy teaching a made up Kung Fu movie based "style" and not being marketed as self-defense or MMA worthy. For something that is of a practical style, observe pressure testing in action. In all cases, social chemistry is important too - just making sure everyone is friendly and the instructors aren't jerks.
Since McDojoLife has come into my mindframe, I would add check social media and google the names of whoever you can by looking at the staff/sensei/about us pages of the school's website - and the lack of a web site or social media presence would be a huge red flag. Also, check here as usually bein gon McDojoLife is a redflag too.

    I give them 5 Chesters.
But also I would give them three bits of advice for checking out schools-
    1) Visit at least 3 with a list of questions and join none right away. (You have to make a list of your expectations and goals - I can’t do that but for you but leave kicking butt, be like Bruce Lee or the like off the list. But put on things like what do they do focus more on the Practical vs cultural vs sports )
    2) Pick your top 3 and do a web search on them with people names (if you don’t see some good and bad on each keep looking you have not looked hard enough)
    3) When you have a winner see if you can talk to a student at that place (social media is helpful here) and offer to take them to the nearest food court your treat and have that person (with parent or a friend on their side) tell you about how they are treated and how they treat others. (Make sure they tell you good and bad and it is all between you).
Then you can make your choice next week. (Geez I wrote more for this part then I think was needed and way more then my comment ))
important bonus point - Always be willing to leave and re-evaluate if this is a good fit for you in 6 months regardless.

Great work here Rob. As an FYI here in the state of Queensland, Australia, to work with children in any context, including Martial Arts, you require a Blue Card. Without one you don't work with children. You apply to the state government, who then carry out full background checks, including any criminal records. Fail the checks, no Blue Card and no employment around children. If you are found to be working with children without a Blue Card, significant penalties apply to the offender and the employer. I hope this provides some insight into a way to avoid the awful situations you have so clearly presented. Keep up your important work keep the Martial Arts in all its forms relevant and legitimate. What an absolutely fantastic piece, Rob! First, I actually answer that question with frightening regularity. I am active on Quora, and get asked this very thing often. I always tell them the same thing...Find a gym/dojo/club that is nearby. Vet the training of the owner and the head instructor. Ask them how they vet all the instructors, and what those bonafides are. Lastly, they should have all the names of all the instructors readily available. Lastly, did it seem like a place you would like to go to? After all, if you aren't excited enough to go and train, it doesn't really matter. I train at No Joke MMA in Rockford. They are a perfect example, IMO of the embodiment of that. Names, and accomplishments on a website, and no offenders! Lastly, and the reason I was promted to comment...do you have Segals? I know you have the Dillman's and the Dux's, but when it comes to exual predators, I really think you should have sensei Stevies!

To answer what to look for in a school, check out their credentials and if they're properly registered/affiliated. Our organisation has its HQ in Japan, all our instructors are accredited coaches with the Australian Sports Commission, affiliated with the Australian Karate Federation (and part of WKF), and also certified referees/judges, and all Dan grades are registered in Japan and certificates sent out from Japan. Anyone who wants to work with children has to get a background check done and carry a Working with children card issued by the government on them. There's more to it obviously, but to anyone reading this, if your state or country does not have such measures, do what you need to do to make your government listen.

To answer your question, I would recommend checking if the kids can be watched remotely by the parents, or if they are allowed to sit out of sight where they can still hear the children. I understand why having parents present in a martial arts class can be detrimental to training, but they still need to be able to see what's going on. Having a waiting/lounge area with live feed of the classroom can do wonders to help. I'd also recommend googling the school and the instructor, as well as asking the instructor for their background check and of any criminal record. Something like petty theft, vandalism or breaking road laws (speeding etc) when young don't necessarily mean unsafe around children, and any good instructor will happily be open and honest about such things and try and provide an environment where children are encouraged to be better.

As a Martial Arts instructor, I tell all people I talk to that if they are interested in Martial Arts a couple of things to ask and look at right away.
    1. Ask how long it takes to earn a Black Belt if you hear anything less than 3-5 years run! (3 years is an adult who go's to every lesson every week and trains at home and even then is more likely to be around that 4-5 year mark).
    2. If they have a contract can you get out of it if something happens down the line and you decide to not train anymore. (ours is 30 days notice and one final monthly payment and of course the student is welcome to train that entire time)
    3. Do you do tournaments and if so are they required? (if yes, they are hunting for your money and noting else, run) Tournaments should be a fun and optional add on to your martial arts journey. (A great way to demonstrate your skills and get some more practical practice)
    4. And finally and most importantly do a couple of lessons with the instructor and talk to the other parents and/or students and ask how they like the training there. (you will get a pretty good vibe within a week or 2 of training at a dojo if it is legit or not.)
Bonus: Ask if they have ever had to use their training in an actual self-defense situation. If they give you some crazy story about defending themselves against something crazy aka a large group of people where they kicked the crap out of everyone its probably not legit and you should be very hesitant. (99% of Martial Artist's and Instructors have either had to use their train 1 maybe 2 times or never at all, and that one time was probably something really lame {unfortunately, myself included, minus that one time I single handedly took on a clan of ninjas by myself to rescue a fair maiden in distress and crushed them all including their legendary ninja master in single combat}, The martial arts is about learning discipline, respect, humility and confidence. And if you build someones confidence up 90% of the time people do not mess with those who show confidence in what they do and that alone is a huge deterrent to most situations).
Sorry for going on for so long. Keep the Martial Arts Legit. Way to go Rob you rock for calling all these phonies and creeps out.

Oh fuck this legitimately just keeps getting worse.
For people to find a legit school, the school needs to be part of a legit licencing organisation and all instructors need to be DBS checked and be able to provide proof that they have the checks done.

Visit and watch (or try) the class a few times and see if the class and staff fit what you are looking for. Most places will offer at least a free class or week to new students.

It's truly atonishing peoples morals and ethics. I agree with the 5 . to answer your Q: People definitely do some research on the teachers, look at their reviews. If someone knows of people who went to that school previously, ask them why they left. See if there are any news stories or blogs that talk about the school or the individual. Look at the sex offenders list or public criminal records.

But this is a really gross number. It's hard to believe that someone like that is even covered by the operator. Really good and important work, real case-related clarification.

After doing some due diligence on the instructors, if they check out then I would want to know the following; what is the primary focus? Tournaments or self defense . Are they teaching just the moves, or the mental aspects and strategies. I made the mistake of putting my kids in a school whose name I won’t mention and a very well known style and all they taught was moves with no information. I would want to know why something works. Don’t just have me copy moves without an understanding of the physics for example. Do they teach awareness. Strategies. I feel like you can learn much of what you need in a year or less, but it takes much longer to mentally prepare for a life and death fight. How do they instil confidence in their students? I’d make sure it’s not the belts that are driving the business. Too many schools sell out and issue black belts just because they make bank getting as many people as possible through the ranks. On average how long does it take? Do they offer private instruction and on a regular basis. It’s expensive but a great way to learn. I could go on and on. Love your work dude!!

Advice I’d give is to come check it out. There is a grace period before you actually sign up. Check it out. If you’re here for any length of time you’re going to hear us talk about culture and expectations (I usually give that talk). You’ll hear that we aren’t going to allow you to be messy, if you do something untoward or make comments to the ladies you’ll be a former member, and that we’re going to respect and help each other.

    1. Research the teacher and their lineage (e.g. see if their ranks are recognized by international accreditation bodies like the International Society of Okinawan-Japanese Karate Do [ISOK]).
    2. Ask about the instructor's reputation in the local business community.
    3. Look up other martial arts schools in the area and speak to the owners to measure the reputation of the prospective school you wish to enter to subscribe for lessons.
Not sure if it was or is a requirement to pass a polygraph to become a cop in the state where he was employed as a law enforcement officer (per the state's Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training). However, if so, another "winner" who passed the vaunted full scope polygraph exam to become a law enforcement officer.

If you want to find a legitimate martial arts studio read their online reviews, ask others in the martial arts community and look at competitions and see how that school does. There was a BJJ school near my house and I saw they were dominating competitions in our area. I started training there after asking permission from my original instructor. It turned out to be an amazing school with some very high level grapplers who showed me the way.

  • @nickgabrielson8407

My advice would be to determine what your goal in practicing is first then do some googling to find arts that meet that need/goal, then go around and try different studios. Ask questions of the teacher and the other students. Try and figure out if the vibe fits your needs. And if you are a parent, for the love of god, martial art classes are not day cares, stop dropping your kids off like it is. Go in with them, watch class, take an interest in the art your self.

My advice to find a good martial arts place/dojo:
Does it feel strange in negative way? Consider trusting your Intuition, as long as it isn't just because you are feeling strange cause ypu are not used to work out 😉
Don't only trust, but ask, try and doibt techniques. That is the only legitimate way to develop a martial art any further.
Do this in a respectful/kind manner, but do not Submission into not-asking. A good trainer/sensei/sifu/etc will listen tonyou and explain or, even better, try your considerations with you - in a respectful way as well, not showing off or trying to lower you for your questioning.
If there is non touch ko: Just leave. Don't turn back, just don't.
If there are things that might line up with molestion keep sensitive to it, observe, do not blindly deny that there might be a crime.
It happens everywhere between people who trust each other, so sadly it is as likely to happen at a martial arts dojo as in the family, school, church or in the neighborhood.
Do not fail to see and hear a victim because of blind trust into another human being.
And if you have a friend who's into martial arts: Consinder visiting his dojo as well or to have him accompany you to test trainings at the schools you are interested in.
Rob, seriously, I do not get it; I might have missed out on a vid where Dillman is part of a molestion/rape incident, but as far as I have followed your vids and from my general knowledge about the martial arts world I simply do not know anything about this.
So couldn't it be senseful to use different score for the molesters?
I mean "niiiing!!!" and no touch k.o. are weird enough and can get people into trouble, but actively committing a violent crime on someone seems a different category to me.
Could also be the score for those guys who actively mistreat their students by hitting them in the head, throwing rocks or kicking them into the spine etc.
Stay save & keep your content (and the martial arts of course) legit 🫸🤛

Look into the staff and also ask detailed questions about what medical training the staff have and what supplies they keep on hand. I've trained at places that didn't have so much as an ice pack. My question is why would anyone keep hiring this guy? Could that dojo owner not have found another instructor?
