Its not that no one wants to talk about mental health. Its that as soon as a mass shooting happens, gun advocates pivot to mental health as a way not to talk about any type of gun control reforms. Now the US is not some unique place in the world that makes its citizens mental health so much worse than other counties. What does make it unique is its lax gun laws. So while mental health should be something we care about regardless of gun violence, the more obvious thing to do to limit gun violence is fix the gun laws. The other issue with the constant bringing up of mental health every time a gun is used is it implies that all gun violence is caused by some one with mental illness. This isn't true and if it is there are an awful lot of people in prison who should be in a psychiatric center.

I've never felt more depressed and hopeless than when I was on SSRIs meant to treat my depression! I had some WILD thoughts running through my head when i was on them last. I wont say what they were but they were not good. And unfortunately these medications are the first things most psychiatrists look to when you come to them with depression. And they never helped me, just made me numb so i didn't feel depressed (on some of them), but i also didn't feel anything else.

This is true. I got in a car accident and everything literally went in slow motion. This truck ran a red light while I was turning and when hit the whole front end of my car got smashed in. Then the truck rocked side to side I remember looking and hoping it didn't roll over. It stayed upright and hit a pole. It was so weird when the front of my car smashed in. It was like ch ch ch in slow segments it proll happened in less than a second but it felt like 4 seconds while it was smashing in. It is hard to explain but if anyone has been in a really bad accident or a life and death situation knows what I am talking about. It is like a slow motion scene in a movie.

i was in a situation one time that could have went 2 ways. im here right now, so thankfully the 1 of the 2 ways was positive. anyway.i can truly say that my body was just responding in ways that would be almost impossible to do if i was not in a life or death situation. I’m a longtime user of an SSRI and I will second what he is saying. In my case, the medication made a tremendously positive impact on my life. But it does make changes. And if you are a person of a certain personality type, it is not hard to imagine these very strong medications affecting you in a negative way. It’s just like any other drug. Alcohol makes angry people angrier. LSD makes anxious people more anxious. Psychoactive substances affect people in many different ways and it’s important from a research perspective to understand how we can prevent potentially dangerous effects before they occur.
The fact that people put traumatized kids on T.V. kind of leading on gun control is just straight insane, they should not be the voice of taking out a very very important amendment.

Very good point about the prescription drugs. My buddy who's a combat vet had the same problem. When he came home the doctors put him on them. It freaked him out triggered his PTSD. Now he lives in Colorado and smokes pot. That helps him a lot better.

when I first was diagnosed with severe social and general anxiety one medication they gave me made me literally feel nothing emotionally...I didn't feel sad, I didn't feel anxious, but I didn't feel any remorse or empathy, I didn't feel love, and honestly it felt great to just tap out of all emotions....but I felt like I became a sociopath to people..i could manipulate them and treat them how ever I wanted and I never felt guilt....I went to my doc and told her the problem and she was like yeah sometimes that happens to some people maybe we should try another med...the other med didn't shut my feelings off and honestly I felt like a normal person for once
Very similar thing happened to me I've had been taking ethosuximide (medication for absense & general seizures) the side effect were soo scary psychologically I was in a zombie like state, depression was also a side effect of taking those pills, I had thought of suicide multiple times. on many occasions I would look into the mirror and stare at myself for minutes. It's not a checking myself out staring, it was a blank stare and crazy thoughts going three my head. I'm glad I didnt act on those pyshcotic thoughts and mentally strong enough to overcome those thoughts. If your taking ethosuximide tell me what your experience is like.

She went to the most prestigious rehabs in the country and would send snapchats of her with movies stars that were also at the rehab. She is still fucked up to this day and her parents (also addicts of various substances) finally said fuck it and had some doctor start writing her scripts for methadone or whatever pill will keep her feeling normal while doing the least damage to her organs. 12 years later she is still on opiates of some sort and just as mentally pathetic as she was when we were younger. She will mentally be a child until the day she dies. My best friend married this girls best friend who's parents were also multi-millionaires. They literally sat him down and explained to him that, although she was 23, she was still mentally a child and would always be that way. He married her anyway. 2 years later she divorced him because he refused to buy her a $6,000 pair of shoes..... She married some 20yr old idiot, got pregnant and they now live with her parents, or in a house they fund.

Now the US is not some unique place in the world that makes its citizens mental health so much worse than other counties. What does make it unique is its lax gun laws. So while mental health should be something we care about regardless of gun violence, the more obvious thing to do to limit gun violence is fix the gun laws. The other issue with the constant bringing up of mental health every time a gun is used is it implies that all gun violence is caused by some one with mental illness. This isn't true and if it is there are an awful lot of people in prison who should be in a psychiatric center.

I've never felt more depressed and hopeless than when I was on SSRIs meant to treat my depression! I had some WILD thoughts running through my head when i was on them last. I wont say what they were but they were not good. And unfortunately these medications are the first things most psychiatrists look to when you come to them with depression. And they never helped me, just made me numb so i didn't feel depressed (on some of them), but i also didn't feel anything else.

This is true. I got in a car accident and everything literally went in slow motion. This truck ran a red light while I was turning and when hit the whole front end of my car got smashed in. Then the truck rocked side to side I remember looking and hoping it didn't roll over. It stayed upright and hit a pole. It was so weird when the front of my car smashed in. It was like ch ch ch in slow segments it proll happened in less than a second but it felt like 4 seconds while it was smashing in. It is hard to explain but if anyone has been in a really bad accident or a life and death situation knows what I am talking about. It is like a slow motion scene in a movie.

I’m a longtime user of an SSRI and I will second what he is saying. In my case, the medication made a tremendously positive impact on my life. But it does make changes. And if you are a person of a certain personality type, it is not hard to imagine these very strong medications affecting you in a negative way. It’s just like any other drug. Alcohol makes angry people angrier. LSD makes anxious people more anxious. Psychoactive substances affect people in many different ways and it’s important from a research perspective to understand how we can prevent potentially dangerous effects before they occur.
The fact that people put traumatized kids on T.V. kind of leading on gun control is just straight insane, they should not be the voice of taking out a very very important amendment.

when I first was diagnosed with severe social and general anxiety one medication they gave me made me literally feel nothing emotionally...I didn't feel sad, I didn't feel anxious, but I didn't feel any remorse or empathy, I didn't feel love, and honestly it felt great to just tap out of all emotions....but I felt like I became a sociopath to people..i could manipulate them and treat them how ever I wanted and I never felt guilt....I went to my doc and told her the problem and she was like yeah sometimes that happens to some people maybe we should try another med...the other med didn't shut my feelings off and honestly I felt like a normal person for once
Very similar thing happened to me I've had been taking ethosuximide (medication for absense & general seizures) the side effect were soo scary psychologically I was in a zombie like state, depression was also a side effect of taking those pills, I had thought of suicide multiple times. on many occasions I would look into the mirror and stare at myself for minutes. It's not a checking myself out staring, it was a blank stare and crazy thoughts going three my head. I'm glad I didnt act on those pyshcotic thoughts and mentally strong enough to overcome those thoughts.

Who the fuck gets diagnosed with general anxiety lol Jesus Christ how pathetic, so now being anxious is a condition lol weak people can’t handle anxiety and instead of admitting they’re weak mentally they’re diagnosed so they don’t feel so pathetic lol
@@worldisfilledb I was thinking the same thing. Some people are just mentally fucking weak and need medications to deal with the same shit everyone else has to mentally deal with on a daily basis. I think it has a lot to do with how you were raised and how much you were coddled as a child... But I agree its pathetic. The most mentally weak person I've ever met was this girl I went to school with who's family were billionaires. Words cannot describe how mentally weak and insecure she was. She had literally never had to fight a battle on her own. Then in college she got hooked on pain pills and that's one battle no one else can fight for you, no matter how much money or power they have. Her parents wound up spending literally millions of dollars on rehab for her. She went to the most prestigious rehabs in the country and would send snapchats of her with movies stars that were also at the rehab. She is still fucked up to this day and her parents (also addicts of various substances) finally said fuck it and had some doctor start writing her scripts for methadone or whatever pill will keep her feeling normal while doing the least damage to her organs. 12 years later she is still on opiates of some sort and just as mentally pathetic as she was when we were younger. She will mentally be a child until the day she dies. My best friend married this girls best friend who's parents were also multi-millionaires. They literally sat him down and explained to him that, although she was 23, she was still mentally a child and would always be that way. He married her anyway. 2 years later she divorced him because he refused to buy her a $6,000 pair of shoes..... She married some 20yr old idiot, got pregnant and they now live with her parents, or in a house they fund.
