The most dangerous word on UA-cam is 'review' because from what I see so many turn a 'review' into a neatly hidden very well paid sleight of hand Ad. Anyway this drama will only make LTT much bigger. Thats a no brainer if you understand how drama works related to social media.
You're so right! I'm a voice over actor, who wanted like many others to record from home because of the Covid. I quickly realised that I had a lot of things to learn, including the gears. And guess what? If you possess some analytics skills, you realize about all the idiocies that they all repeat because they all copy each others. I came to believe that their main source of income is to resale all the products they receive 🙄
Reviews can act as ads but they rarely are intended to be. If you're looking for a new gpu, you watch reviews to make an informed decision. If you're being influenced by a review to buy something you were never interested in buying... I think you're the idiot then
I just don’t understand why when even Linus himself admits they don’t have enough time for videos, he himself couldn’t do anything about it until the situation blew up
Capitalist sigma grindset man. He has a commitment to all his fans to get videos out because all over the world people tun in and depend on him man. What are they gonna do if a video doesn't come out? Watch Big Bang Theory? Actually they could do that and it would be just as worthy of their time IMO
it is really just greedy mindset or rather as doclime said Capitalist mindset that most people have just produce produce produce money more more ore and quality goes out of windows
Because he should be responsible and prioritize quality vs just making videos pulled out of his behind, people make purchasing decision based on his reviews
I think that's the solution to the problem he raised that he "doesn't know the solution to yet". give offbrand to the employees. He said it himself, a normal company doesn't need a ceo.
@@pedrogarcia8706 I think you may guys may be mixing up owners and CEOs. An owner doesn't actually need to do anything, they can just sit back and get returns (although often they do get involved). A CEO is a paid employee that manages some aspect of the company. The employees can jointly own the company, but they don't have to run it like a democracy - in many cases it's still better to have an experienced CEO making big picture strategic decisions so that employees can focus on performing in their roles.
One addition regarding the Billet Labs thing: "just give us the money" may sound weird, but they posted their reasoning on the LTT reddit (I believe). It's a combination of: - A new prototype is already in production - It's uncertain how long it would take to receive it - There is no guarantee that the prototype still works if it was in random people's hands This could also be a huge problem if the block was auctioned to competitors... Quite messed up Edit: There's comment stating that Billet Labs only wanted the prototype back after shit hit the fan. In LTT's first apology video, there is a screenshot of the email correspondence between the two parties, in which can be seen that Billet Labs originally allowed LMG to keep it, but then asked to get it back when Linus disliked the product. This seems to have happened before August 10th. Probably just fanboys in the comments...
Billet needs to bear their own share of responsibility for what happened. LMG screwed some things up, but Billet also didn't take care to communicate their expectations clearly or take measures to ensure their investment was protected if it was so important to them as they claim. For example, they told LMG at one point "you can try it on a 4090," which is what they did in the video, and then got upset that they tested it on a 4090 and the numbers didn't turn out great. Then when LMG tried to send it back to them they told them "you can keep it," and then seemingly changed their minds after LMG put it up for charity auction because LMG didn't have any use for it. The ideas that the company was stalled because they no longer had their prototype (which Billet claimed was the case), or that the block could end up in the hands of competitors which could somehow reveal some kind of trade secrets (which I believe was purely speculation on Gamers Nexus' part), don't seem to fit with their treatment of the transaction on the whole. The fact that they've been so happy to be the center of a pity party in the wake of people finding out about LMG's mishandlings and process errors while they themselves have been about as sloppy as LMG is pretty questionable. If they're going to take part in scrutinizing LMG so closely they ought to take a look at themselves and their own methodologies as well because they either screwed up with something important or they're not quite being honest.
@perfecthumaninterface I dunno man... sounds like a lot defending LTT. You come off as a butt hurt fanboy, but I could be wrong. I actually agree that Billet could have done better at communicating... but holy shit did Linus handle that entire situation wrong. I don't think GN came off as all high and mighty like you're portraying. I'm a bigger fan of LTT than I am of GN, but GN doesn't come across nearly as pompous as LTT. I wonder if you even watched the full GN video because they didn't make it just to harp on mistakes that GN makes too. GN admits their own faults as well, the difference is in how they handle the mistake. LTT won't reshoot things, they'll leave a pinned (or even sometimes unpinned) comment to address a major issue in the video, or sometimes you might get "lucky" and get an annotation during the video. You can't be doing that kinda stuff when your brand is "we're better than the other guys because of how vigorously we test things." LTT already acted like that, but to say it out loud, essentially calling someone out by name in a video is insane. The bottom line is that LTT has been getting worse and worse over the years with Linus being a massive reason why. I used to enjoy his channel a lot, but as he has grown in popularity he comes off more and more as a self righteous prick. Not to mention how rushed the videos feel these days as well. I'm amazed at how unprepared they are when doing some of these projects and then half assing to boot. I think it's taken a very obvious toll on everyone who works there.
@@mitakemiyao I never argued what Billet said, so not sure why you're directing it at me? I'm not attacking Billet, it's just a fact of working in business where stuff easily gets miscommunicated/misunderstood. I'm not defending LTT for their actions... because regardless of there being some hiccups in communication, they still handled the entire situation poorly.
As someone who's in the mouse enthusiast community, the guys that review mice are really clueless and it's annoying asf knowing smaller creators that are better get drowned out by dumbed down reviews for products that aren't made for the average consumer
i remember watching the original billet labs video and being like "... wait they're just gonna put it on the wrong card?" and then after he said the product was bad i was f****n shocked. like dude linus you CANT do that. that could end a small company....
The trend of immediately commentating and reacting to a situation immediately after it starts trending is something I always hated in social media, and I'm glad you're trying to break that behavior. It makes you a much more level-headed and reliable source of information. I believe that stride for accuracy over content far far outweighs any loss in views you suffer, good on you Lud

Thanks a lot for the overview of this drama. I follow both, and I saw a few videos regarding this, and I was so lost from where it began. Now everything makes sense.
When I first heard about controversy, I thought it would came out that they are bad people that don’t deserve a platform. And then the more I heard about it just sounded like a heavily rushed company that made mistakes and should have corrected them. It definitely seem blown way out of proportion
That's what I was thinking too. It could really show that employee ownership not only works, but works better than the other alternatives. I could really see Offbrand be a progressive business of the future.
4:30 I actually looked at the bottom of my mouse and peeled off the protective film, that I completely didn't realize I had left on. Thanks Mogul Mail!
Minor correction: Linus didn't initially respond with a "blog post on Floatplane". It was a forum post on their own forums, which are public, unlike Floatplane.
LMG has done an incredible job shifting from a Linus focused model. It was something Linus started doing many years ago and was one of his smartest moves. I genuinely believe that Linus could leave and LMG would continue almost business as usual.
I heard about this drama at the beginning of this week and had to look up everything myself (traumatizing, lonely, scary😢). So glad to have my Mogul Mail cover the topic, everything is right with the world again
Making a cooperative type business may be an answer? I wonder how it’d work in the creator space... Regardless I like the way Ludwig is thinking about workers. I wish more people would do the same.
Hasan, and several other content creators, already do it. There's no magic formula, give your cooperative effort a % split of revenue. Can haggle over the %s, but the foundation is well established.
@@ayushdhar he pays them a significant cut, either allowing them to choose their own percentage (iirc he does this with merch?), take home all the profits (like his yt editors), or splitting equally (like the podcast)
@@ryanstardust_ that is not a co op. The whole point of a co op is that workers have a say in how the company as a whole is run. It's not just the percentage of revenue shared
So to add context, the Gamers Nexus video didn't come out directly in response to the comments from the tour. It came out in response to Linus doubling down on the billet labs testing, his response to the tour comments feedback, and calling out Steve during a podcast.
I honestly am very hopeful that you find that certain balance in power in a company and their employees, I feel like there is a way to operate in those conditions and it’s just a matter of finding it - and I feel like you and your team are a group of smart people that might get there

6:06 Corrrection : There is literally ONLY one. This was their ONLY prototype, they needed it for development, and it cost thousands in production and opportunity cost.
I watched this all unfold bit by bit from gamers Nexus first vid to linus responses. And boy was it a ride. I think everyone was taken by surprise at linus doubling down TWICE. It was so careless. He has all the right to take things personally but what failed him was his ego and anger. Thinking that just refuting the claims would make him and the company look better. He's not even the ceo anymore and said all this without cross checking with anyone. It was wild and deserved the loss of his fans and people like me who wanted trusted reviews. The final response feels hopeful though and I think they did a good job with the changes they're planning and basically telling Linus to calm tf down
Also for a reviewer to not even read the product manual to know how to use a product correctly is wild and telling. Then said no time for corrections or awareness that it's wrong to do. Just doubling down 😭.
Idk, I think it was completely undeserved and out of proportion. He LITERALLY has been talking about how they have these issues and are looking to fix them for months
@@FweshPwinceJiff if you need to read a manual to use a product its a bad product, i dont know anyone who will read manual to use a common item like a computer mouse or keyboard.
LTT is entertainment tech. If you watch LTT for reliable statistics, you're doing it wrong. Similarly, if you watch Gamer's Nexus expecting drama-free statistics reviews that aren't hinged on taking pot shots at other channels, you're still doing it wrong. Linus needs to slow down and Steve needs to grow up.
@@eechee2979Then LTT should put a disclaimer on their videos saying they’re just “entertainment tech” and no one should trust their statistics. Otherwise, you can’t fault people for believing a channel’s reviews when they market themselves as a trustworthy tech review channel.
Fact check sheet still has not included that Billet Labs originally said LTT could keep the prototype. Billet Labs changing their minds after LTT video release is the source of the miscommunication.

There are a ton of good takes if you want to learn more; in the review creator space there is the Hardware Unboxed podcast, the JayTwoCents RTFM podcast on the topic of LTT fanboys and some social implications of these review mistakes. There has been some good take rebuttals of the language that GN:Steve used that made subliminally more incendiary. Some of these issues seem have been known at some level for a while... hopefully LMG/LTT continues down the path of actually addressing them instead of pushing stuff aside in the rush to push content out.
Hey Ludwig, from 7:20ish you've made a large mistake. They asked for it back BEFORE the charity event, they agreed to send it back several times. The charity event rolled around and they auctioned it off by mistake. LTT Was seemingly asked about it and seemingly shrugged it off for some time. Nexus broke the news about this and the community was outraged, it was only then that LTT offered to pay for it but made the claim that they had offered prior. GN has followed up with Billet regarding the timeframe and the offer definitely came in hours after GN released their video. This may seem like a trivial misrepresentation of the sequence of events, but shows certain levels of intent, or lack there of, as well as integrity regarding these issues and resolving them. Until the very end LTT refused (and still does) to accept that his representation of this product was unfair in any way despite it being significantly mischaracterizing of the product. Further showing the lack of integrity and respect for small businesses in this space.
Honestly I doubted and thought that Ludwig wouldn't make a Mogul Mail with a youtuber he's collabed with before... RESPECT. The journalism degree coming in handy!
This is kind of a crazy crossover. Ive been watching GN and LTT for years, so to hear Ludwig talking about this stuff (and of course the Madison drama, which was crazy to say the least) was not what i expected in the least haha. Cool to know that Lud also knows a bit about GPUs and CPUs as well and tech UA-camrs.
@@FardeenRiyadh16 bro made the entire video because he got butt hurt. It wasn't done because LTT are bad, but rather cherry pick fumbles theu had, and expose it as revenge. Hes nothing but a weirdo loser
I hope LMG and its employees find a pace where they are comfortable with the quality produced while also maintaining business operations. It is a delicate balance, but made worse by the volatility of online advertising. Tech viewers are a lucrative group to advertise to, but at the same time very hard to advertise to. And the floatplane subscribers mostly don't do it for the extra value the service offers, but to support them and be part of the community. That is why the numbers dropped so rapidly.
One thing to mention, just a few months ago they hired a CEO who was actually given quite a bit of power. I highly suspect that he won’t be afraid to let heads roll once the results of the investigation come in.
the dishonesty of saying it would be too much money and time to re-test the cooler, when they probably just can't because the company that gave them the equipment has lost all faith in them and wont deal with them.
Gamer’s Nexus is the 80+ Platinum Standard in PC part reviewing. Their stuff is just so detailed and thorough that sometimes it can be a little opaque.
If you really want to give people more say. Make them shareholders, make it a co-operative. They then get a share of the profits and have a vested interest that the company succeeds other than a basic salary.
To be clear: There was absolutely no miscommunication regarding returning the copper cooler. There are screenshots of a super clear-cut conversation of Billet Labs saying "yes, we want it back" and LTT saying "okay, we will send it back in a couple days." Straight up. Couple weeks later LTT: "hey sorry it's late but we have it ready to go, it will be shipped early next week" *Repeat that for a couple more weeks* *0 messages from Billet since they said they want it back* Out of the blue LTT somehow crafts miscommunication and sells/auctions it.
They said that email didn't get sent to billet and the cooler got thrown in the wrong area. It's still pretty bad, but not nearly as bad as purposefully stealing it.
Hey great video and all that, but thanks for telling me about that hold left click-to-play at 2x speed feature. Much more handy for getting to live in streams, thanks Mogul Mail! That Ludwig guy still uses the settings button its unreal.
Lud missed the bit where Billet originally said they could keep the cooler, then later changed their mind after the review. Looks like that updated request got lost in LMG's seemingly shambolic stock management system. Lud makes it sound like Billet expected it back from day 1 and they just sold it anyway.
Everyone and their dog had something to say about it, so it's good to see that some people waited instead of jumping on the bandwagon. Other than that I think the video by TechTechPotato about this whole situation is a good one
The funny thing is I used to review components as well like 10 years ago, and we had the same mantra as the guy who started this whole thing. We'd advertise that any time we tested it was always fresh testing and we never pulled from old database numbers. Which is a pain, but when in a couple months things like driver, firmware, OS updates etc... can happen, numbers will change. Sometimes for the better and sometimes for worse. However, the thing we didn't do is name names to cause shit and drama. When you do that, you've given a free pass for anyone to pull out those skeletons on you. But also, some of these review sites have different relationships with manufactures/distributors and you can piss off the wrong people and get blacklisted/lose sources.
Not gonna lie I never took LTT as a serious tech reviewer I always thought they were aimed to towards more mainstream viewers if you wanted something more in-depth go elsewhere. I used to love Linus doing random shit in his office but he kinda just stopped doing that randomly.
The problem with not being thorough with Tech reviews from large companies as large LMG is that they can tank a new business for just being lazy. I've been following this since the news broke from GNs first video.
Honestly the thing that i felt was the worst part of the billet labs fuckup was not just the incident itself, but the fact that linus double and trippled down on deflecting blame about it and outright lieing about communications they had with BL at the time. That more then anything makes me question there credibility going forward.
love it. met you one day at the climbing gym and had a fun time working on a dyno. was quite a while ago. my friend came up and asked, without my permission, if i could get a picture with you cause i was fanboying out so hard. you're a good person and have good intentions, and this just shows it!
As someone who helped build and grow a UA-cam channel that sold for multi-millions, it really does suck to see your boss walk away with everything and the employees who did the work end up with none of the benefits. I try not to be bitter about it, but I can't help it sometimes.
I want to bring up a point. Last month Linus did a event and released a bunch of exclusive merch that only who was subscribed to floatplane could buy. Many people (just like me) must have subscribed for a single month, bought the merch and then unsubscribed. Thay isn't all, but it could've have helped with the sudden drop of subscribers.
I appreciate the fact you waited to gather all the information you could on this. For example i had no idea you could hold left click to speed up a YT video. Good shit and great video 🤟
Linus is taking the approach of the parent showering their kids with gifts so that they mask the other issues present in the relationship. He didn't really address the workspace toxicity and sexual harassment, but rather said, "WE ARE SO GOOD EMPLOYERS! LOOK AT US, WE ARE GIVING THEM HUGE BONUSES AND WE HAVE GAMING DAYS SCHEDULED FOR THEM." And bragging about their epic Christmas parties really felt off-putting, given the criticism they had faced. Nobody really complained about the money, but the work conditions.
I don’t think it’s that he didn’t want to talk about Madison. I think it’s more that he absolutely should NOT talk about Madison. Doing that will only make things worse for himself. The best thing would be to let his CEO handle it after the investigation returns it’s findings, whatever they are.
I recommend checking these sources (e.g. Gamer Nexus's video and Madison Tweets) because there's a loooot of important details that are lost in translation (of course Lud couldn't cover em all in a single short overview video). Especially the scale of LTT's mistakes, the level of out of touch from Linus, and the severity of Madison's experiences (alleged). It's shocking.
We really shouldn't speculate on the madison allegations. There's absolutely no need to stir the pot any more. Nothing of value will be brought forward without any official word from LMG.
Madison told white lies throughout her post. The time frame lines up with the woman who was falsely accusing Linus of wanting sexual favors in exchange for a Floatplane creator spot. I think her name was Naomi Wu. Linus talked to Madison about the situation because Madison ran the social media accounts. This was proved false a long time ago and Madison knew it. If she omits facts about something so minor (impacting her personally), then what else is she omitting, twisting or lying about? I'd take her allegations with a major grain of salt until the third party investigation is over.
9:48 I hear the words he’s saying but all that’s processing in my head is that Ludwig has listened to the Jschlatt AI cover of “That’s Life”, which I think is funny.
I really enjoyed hearing you describe how you've thought thru problems and are still working on things. Especially when it seems like you're trying to make life better in ways that you can do for more than just yourself.
I think Linus is either just at the point in his life where he's gotten too big for his own good. As in he believes he doesn't make mistakes because he's got so much experience and knows a lot. Or he could be at the point where he's done it for so long he's just lost the care factor.
Ludwig is the type of guy to record 5 takes of an entire video instead of cutting each part out and editing them together Respect for that to be honest
I like that you took some time to get more information before posting this video. Knowing that it is a non-advertiser-friendly topic I still think the Madison bombshell was a bigger occurance than the Gamers Nexus video. That topic is rough but deserved more than a "you should look it up". Most people won't do that after an 18 minute video.
I think Ludwig is avoiding wading into having an opinion until the investigation is over. I agree it's definitely a bigger deal. I'm willing to give LTT another chance in terms of their content, but not their culture. I'm highly skeptical of their ability to improve their working conditions, improve their company culture, and fire people if they sexually harass people. Frankly it sounds like Linus himself is a problem, and if he was just some employee he should be fired. But he can't be fired because the whole thing doesn't work without him. So it's a huge mess, and I just don't see how they can prove to me as a potential consumer that they've changed.
Billet labs originally told LTT they could keep the prototype, so it was probably marked as their property..then Billet labs didnt like the video and requested it back. Theb the miscommunication insued.
Worker owned cooperatives might be the way to go for the final piece of your puzzle! The most dangerous word on UA-cam is 'review' because from what I see so many turn a 'review' into a neatly hidden very well paid sleight of hand Ad. Anyway this drama will only make LTT much bigger. Thats a no brainer if you understand how drama works related to social media.

One addition regarding the Billet Labs thing: "just give us the money" may sound weird, but they posted their reasoning on the LTT reddit (I believe). It's a combination of:
- A new prototype is already in production
- It's uncertain how long it would take to receive it
- There is no guarantee that the prototype still works if it was in random people's hands
This could also be a huge problem if the block was auctioned to competitors... Quite messed up
Edit: There's comment stating that Billet Labs only wanted the prototype back after shit hit the fan.
True
@@mitakemiyao No shifting of blame required. LMG made all the mistakes that they did. Billet making their own mistakes has no bearing on that.
@@mitakemiyao I never argued what Billet said, so not sure why you're directing it at me? I'm not attacking Billet, it's just a fact of working in business where stuff easily gets miscommunicated/misunderstood.

I have been sceptical of LTT's working conditions ever since he said on the podcast he is against his employees discussing pay. Big red flag.
He’s also against unions and his wife (49% owner) was head of HR until recently. There has been some good take rebuttals of the language that GN:Steve used that made subliminally more incendiary. Hey Ludwig,
from 7:20ish you've made a large mistake.
Would be based, if Ludwig actually made Offbrand a worker coop.
Couple weeks later LTT: "hey sorry it's late but we have it ready to go, it will be shipped early next week"

All of the mistakes GN pointed out can be fixed, but the maddison thing is the really tough situation.

Nexus really went: Oh you wanna go? You wanna freaking go? Ok then. Let's go.
Ludwig is the type of guy to record 5 takes of an entire video instead of cutting each part out and editing them together
Respect for that to be honest
Mogul mail guy should teach ludwig a few things.
All I got out of this is that I need that click for 2x speed made available stat
Worker owned cooperatives might be the way to go for the final piece of your puzzle! I’d definitely look into that kind of structure, like setting aside preferred shares without voting power to keep any investors happy without jeopardizing the worker-owners. This is not advice btw I’m just a UA-cam comment
In all seriousness, I actually really appreciate Lud's candidness when it comes to his content, goals, and taking responsibility for having such a large influence on UA-cam. He's probably one of the only UA-camrs I'm actually glad to root for and watch because he's consistently transparent and owns up to his mistakes. That being said, anyone notice how Mogul Mail has launched a silent support campaign for Lud by adopting the signature bald-cut? What an amazing guy!
you did add value to the conversation when you covered mistakes you made or people close to you so fair takes only when you wanted
can’t wait for the employees of mogul moves to seize the means of production
The most impactful part of this video was the hold left click 2x speed tip. Life changing.
