    I have been on Net Galley since May, I came to your very informative video, because like you I got a message on Goodreads from a rep of BookSirens, so I thought I'd check them out. With NetGalley five of the books I downloaded were "read now" and the other two I requested, I'm taking it slowly I don't want to be deluged with eARCs... I've managed to review 5 out of the 7 so far (71%). Great video, like you I've been happy with my eARCs even though they're from authors I'd never heard of previously.

    I guess I've never really had a desire to get arcs. I have been watching BookTube for so long that I have so many backlist things I'm interested in that I don't feel like I need to jump ahead. I think this is great advice to get your foot in the door though! I'm sure eventually it will be a thought in my mind!

      I definitely love my backlist books, especially since I buy so much from used book shops and the Dollar Tree, but I definitely think it's fun sometimes to see what's coming out soon and especially to go looking around at the books not everyone is talking about lol

    Every once in a while I get asked by an author to review their work. Probably because I'll write longer comments than the books about their work. But it can be fun. Especially if you're doing it by chapter and you can see the book focus shift as it goes along and then see the polished work. I've been lucky that I never had to do a review that was too critical. One bookstore I used to go to cracked me up because it was full of ARC's that said very obviously they were not to be sold. Great video, Martine! Have an awesome day!

      Whenever I have to leave a less than stellar review, I want to run to the author and say, "It's not you, it's me!" Between the way my mind is most often logic-based, the speed at which I read, and more, it takes a lot sometimes for a book to get inside of me in the ways they tend to for others.

      @@justmartine I kind of try to follow the guideline of start with something positive. Then give whatever criticism I need to (Trying to be positive with that as well). And then finish with something else positive. It takes quite a bit for me to go off on a book. I'm a lot more critical of movies than books. In a book, there are usually not that many people to catch things on the way to press. The author and maybe a couple of editors. If a movie comes out trash, there isn't really much excuse for that. Especially if it has a budget. I'm infamous under my codename on Netflix of giving scathing reviews. It has to be a really bad movie before I go off too much. Usually the ones people don't expect. Best raw review I ever left was on that old movie the Fisher King. I just don't understand why so many people find it lovable. Maybe it's the Robin Williams factor, but I didn't like Patch Adams, either. I just didn't like the Fisher King because the characters don't grow. They end in pretty much the same place they began. For a "feel-good movie", I just feel like there should be some form of growth. I know....Books and tv shows have more time to explore characterization. But, I've seen plenty of films that got me in the feels. Maybe it's just me, though. I never discount that theory. Have a good day, Martine!

      @@TheJohno95 Some times I feel the same way about a book, where I have no idea why other people love it so. And it's not that I don't want to love it too! I often desperately want to love it but alas...

      @@andhisnosestuckinabook9171 Is it the blue light? Although I usually prefer reading physical books, it would be so much harder to read everything I want to if I couldn't use e-books! I've heard that BookSirens occasionally also does physical ARCs, but I know for sure that my reviewing impact isn't big enough yet to qualify for that...

    I can’t do arcs bc i feel overwhelmed to read them so fast but sometimes i don’t read fast enough 😭

      That's a totally fair feeling, I try not to have too many on my plate so I can avoid that. I've felt really free reading for BookSirens because they ask that you try and read it within sixty days of getting it, which I think is totally reasonable since you only get one at a time from them.

    hello martine, tysm for this review about book sirens. could you explain more about the reader rank thing, i just joined and im so confused about the limits of how many books you can request per rank tier. thank you

    • @justmartine
      @justmartine  4 місяці тому

      I'm actually unsure about request limits based on reader rank. Is it giving you some sort of error message when you try to request titles?

      HAHAHAHA I'd honestly love to read your book one day. I can be a strict reviewer, but I try to be fair and I also try to point every book towards someone who would love it, even if I didn't. Every book will be loved by someone! Hope milwordy is going well!
