    Great topic Mic.
    I read an article a while back that looked into the origins of this myth. After a little sleuthing, the author discovered that many of the articles that were written about the negative effects of soy, including the idea that soy gives men man boobs, were almost exclusively traced back and/or funded by the dairy industry.

    I had moobs because I was fat. I decided to go vegan to lose the weight, so I ate a lot of tofu and drank a lot of soy milk. The amount of times I heard people say “that’ll make your manboobs even worse!” Made me a little worried, but my roommate at the time was majoring in agricultural chemistry and said gave me the whole talk about Phytoestrogens. So here we are. 4 years later, 60 pounds lighter, no more moobs and I’ve been eating soy practically everyday! What a silly myth to begin with🤷🏽‍♂️

    I've been on a plant based diet for a couple of weeks.
    I need my animal alternatives to keep me sane.
    This means soy milk lates, tofu scramble and soy cheeses for my lasagne, pizza.
    The first things I've notice are my acid reflux has improved, my energy levels have gone up and at 45 years old I'm now getting rock hard erections like I used to get 30 years ago.

    You said “1.7 cups of soymilk per day, [is] a considerable amount of soy” but you then said that “if you take 12 cups of soy milk and compare it to soy beans, it’s less than a quarter of a cup of soybeans worth of phytoestrogens”. This former point seems to refute the latter one, which is the big gotcha point. Also, I think you avoided this topic in your response to the Game Changers critics; did you change your mind? About the Men's Health guy and his manboobs: Your average soymilk from the drugstore has added sugar in it, let's say about 2 g/100 ml. If he didn't specifically seek out sugar-free soymilk, 12 cups or about 2.7 liters per day comes to 50+ g of added sugar per day, which is super unhealthy (in my area, the official recommendation is that you should consume a half of that, tops). Even if he drank healthy sugar-free version, the one I use has around 30 kcal/100 ml and that would add up to over 800 kcal per day if you drink 12 cups of it. If he didn't compensate for the extra calories by reducing his food intake, that's a huge increase to his daily energy intake and enough to make him gain some flab. So, I'd go for that sugar bomb or that sudden increased calorie consumption first if we're looking for a reason for his changed physique.

    I had a double gynecomastia procedure about three years ago age 37, at great cost, but by a well known American Dr at a top private hospital. I had this problem since I was 18. I was fully vegan for two years age 25-7 and then stopped, and used it on and off to lose gained Vegetarian weight. I never liked soya milk - but I am sure it is much better and more varied these days. I never bothered with soya or fake meat products. My surgeon told me it was a hormone imbalance probably from an increase in oestrogen. He thought it was from alcohol - which is often the case. I started drinking when I was 16 and this seemed to tally esp as I had nothing appear during puberty, but only after drinking regularly. I am writing this because the soya milk man boob thing is nonsense and I have never heard it before in all my research before the op. It is nonsense, and the thousands of non-vegan men who have this problem are living proof. It is also less prevalent in societies where alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

    I am new to veganism and it is very hard living with my parents while i finish college who eat a rather meat and junkfoood filled diet and relying on their financial support and cooking .We often have meat products for dinner and since thereisnt much else to eat ,I regrettably partake. After seeing all those provegan documentaries about animal cruelty,eco and health risks of meat consumption I have directed my self towards eliminating all the animal products from my diet but its hard to find suitable vegan replacements. After hearing about the soyboy phenomenon I was afraid that I would become fat or effeminate from it ( I ve struggled with weight since puberty), but since it obviously comes from an altright source I can discard any information regarding soy danger .Its still very confusing and scary because I EXCLUSIVELY eat soy as dairy replacements .

    • @bartjoboy
      @bartjoboy 3 роки тому

      Replacing dairy with soy products should be fine. I do that as well mostly. For me, I normally take soy yoghurt or oatmeal with soy milk for breakfast and sometimes also a glass of soy milk during lunch. Sometimes with diner we also do something with tofu, so I normally have 2-3 servings of soy a day. Never experienced anything bad and feel great.
      As with anything though , a well-balanced diet is very important. Next to soy, you should obviously also eat lots of fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grain cereals.

    Thumbs down because phytoestrogens affect people differently. I cut beans out of my diet and within a week I had noticeably decreased fat on my chest. We need to realize that everybody's different and we should test things out on ourselves. So, if you're having a problem, change what you're eating and see what happens.

    To those who criticize or are afraid of soy. Ninety-nine percent of farm animals consume soy to fatten them up.
    Ninety percent of all soy is sold to animal agriculture, not for making tofu or soymilk. If you eat animals, or
    dairy products or eggs, you are consuming soy-fed animals. Man-boobs are created from estrogen hormones
    from dairy products, hops used in making beer, and phtalates found in chicken; not from you eating soy directly. American women have large breasts from eating animal estrogens like dairy products; this is not natural or healthy. Asian women traditionally have small breasts and consume a lot of soy,, not dairy products. Sadly soy has been deliberately GMO'd and glyphosated--because they know it has protective beneficial elements. for our health. Thank you Mic for an
    excellent video.

    1:45 lower serum levels of estrogens may be due to "negative feedback", that estrogen receptors make due to being activated by fytoestrogens... no big deal, man body needs estrogens as well I suppose :-) :-) I wish my med school focused more on dietary matters :-( channels like this one provide me some basic info. Thank you for that. I am going to look for more comprehensive evidence :-) keep up the good work

    A study should be done on boys during puberty consuming soy. I developed gyno when I was 17 after my gym buddy and I had started to consume soy protein powders and soy burgers as cheap/fast after workout meals. It's pretty minor gyno but I still have it, and there is zero family history of this happening.

    You clearly have a bias about what you said about milk lowering testosterone and raising estrogen. Soy actually does lower testosterone and raise estrogen in extremely excessive amounts, like 54 cups of soy milk a day. Same thing with milk, you have to drink really excessive amounts.

    On Game Changers they talk about how the phytoestrogens in soy link to estrogen receptors in the body, blocking the body’s natural estrogen from linking to those receptors. They said phytoestrogens have a lower estrogenic effect that our body’s own natural estrogen. So that is why phytoestrogens actually lower estrogen levels.

    So my understanding from this video is that...
    phytoestrogens attach to the hormone receptors and block estrogen in men,
    and phytoestrogens do not block estrogen in women?
    Is this a misunderstanding? It seems like both statements can't be true...

    Please tell me why you "wouldn't binge eat soy everyday". I'm shooting for 250g protein/day for bodybuilding and am looking for a variety of high protein foods to eat everyday. I'm afraid of the man tiddies myth. It's like you convince me that its perfectly safe but then you tell me not to eat a lot of it every day.
    2 cups of soymilk is a joke. I eat a whole block of tofu at a time. If I did this every day, is that a bad thing? If so, why?

  • @chadcrabtree
    @chadcrabtree 8 років тому

    I think your math on the amount of beans to that quantity was probably a bit low. As there's about 84 grams of protein in 12 cups of soy milk. That is far more protein by weight what exists in 1/4 cup of beans. It would take about 300 grams of raw beans to get the baseline of, *if* there was 100% protein extraction, okara has about half the protein concentrate, so you'd need around 600 grams of dry soybeans to fill out 12 cups of soymilk. Which is in line with my recipe for soymilk which is one cup of beans per quart of water.
    So like practically an order of magnitude wrong!

    And of course, being vegan doesn't mean eating soy three times per day. Some vegans are allergic to soy, and some vegans just prefer other foods.
    Implicit in the soy-is-bad narrative is that being vegan means eating soy every day, and it's therefore much healthier to not be vegan. It's entirely possible to be vegan and eat little or no soy.
