@@Barbara_M. it’s asking if the word can be followed by a word ending with -ing. For the first example, “appear trying” isn’t proper grammar, it would need to be “appear to be trying”, which is why “appear” isn’t correct.
On the other hand, I could say “I anticipate buying it” an it would be proper grammar, which is why anticipate is the correct answer.

Sections one and two are bad test questions.
Section One - Although accepted today, questions should never end in a preposition. Questions should be rephrased so there is no need for a preposition but meaning is clear. Ex. Why are you worrying?
Section 2 - all verbs have a basic form, ing form, past form , future form When using the ing form of the verb, it is necessary to accompany the verb with a helper like am, is, are, was, were because the ing verb form cannot stand alone. If using the ing form at the beginning of a sentence - example. Walking is good exercise. Walking becomes the subject of the sentence Is becomes the linking verb. Good becomes adjective describing the predicate nominative or noun exercise which refers back to the subject walking. Check your grammar rules before you post a test. Just because it’s accepted doesn’t make it proper. Basically depends to whom you are talking. Just saying!😀😀

This is fun. I never heard of some of these questions before.

I recommend you not use this source again. Most of your correct answers required dropping the “e” before adding ing. So your correct answers were mostly wrong or arbitrary. I am a former English teacher of 25 years. Perhaps your question was misleading or it could have been your answer choices.
