  • **Hey everyone, I would like to rectify a comment I made during the presentation. While the brown-headed cowbird is the only obligate brood parasite we have in our area, the yellow-billed and black-billed cuckoos are facultative brood parasites. This means that these two cuckoo species can and will build a nest and raise their own young, but when resources are plentiful, they will lay eggs in other cuckoo nests as well as a few other bird species. Sorry for the misinformation, I will be more thorough the next time!**
Named after the bison they followed, cowbirds have since expanded their range throughout much of the eastern United States. These birds can often be found traveling with other blackbird species. During nesting season, cowbirds are commonly known for brood parasitism - the act of laying their own eggs in another songbird species nest. This has impacted many songbird species populations, but some species have found ways to avoid raising the cowbird's young.Check out www.allaboutbi... to learn more about your favorite birds.
