100 runs in less than 3 minutes? Man I wish this video was a lot longer! As someone who has not read nearly any of these, I would have liked if you could have given a short description of each one or why you liked it so much and added it to your top 100. You could have broken this into several videos worth counting down your top 100!
This is called straight to the point
I’d need to add in Kabuki and I know you had Frank Miller’s DD run in there, but specifically I’d include his DD Man Without Fear limited series.
Great video as always, would like to see hear some more detail on these as not come across quite a few before!
I love when you do this kind of video! My favorite content you make.
Thanks!
Thanks for this video. Very straightforward. Keep up the good work. 😁
So glad you included Ennis and McCrea's Hitman, Morrison's JLA, the Ellis/Cassaday Planetary and the Ennis Punisher. So many great titles and I've read maybe 15 of them; much to my shame, I've only read a couple of Will Eisner works (so far). I'd have to include David Mack's Kabuki in the list near the top as a superior example of sustained artistic and writing brilliance.
Glad you enjoyed the list!
Great vid as always buddy!
I can’t believe I actually agree with your list. I loveeee Moore, Johns and Hickman even tho I’ve been burnt out on superhero’s for the last 10 years. Well done!
I would have absolutely added Frank Miller’s 😊“300”. Maybe a near bottom of the list nod to “Ronin” and/or “Tokyo Ghost” for dystopian future reads.
Oooff keeps the great content coming
Looks great, sir!
Nice list. I would add "Murder Falcon" here, not only in the top 100 but top 10. Another great DC book is "Superman secret identity".
hmm - maybe i would fit 'the crow' in there somewhere... i also really loved 300 and Sin City. Just recently read john kellys batman vs. dracular books... as not that big a batman fan - those books are fin amazing. For Kraven's last hunt - this book blew my mind when i bought it back then (guess i was about 10)... bone and chew also top favourites of mine... love you also included something so recent like department of truth... currently one of the best books out there imho.
Props for including Contract with God; I'd add Concrete and (likely many others) Dark Phoenix Saga
Ah good choice with Concrete
I was surprised by seeing Maus in the list and at such a high placing. It really is a special novel, i read it at a young age, so it have a bit of nostalgia, but i really want to read it again with a more mature insight.
Have a collection from when I was a kid around 1990. Incredible Hulk 181, ASM 129, NM98, Death of Superman… Lots like that. Most of the run of Batman and Detective Comics (starting w/ death in the family through a bit after Year 3). Nothing but NM98 is sure to be 9.6-9.8. Worth grading any or should I just keep them in their boxes and sell as a collection in several years?
Picked up volume 1 of the Geoff Johns GL run today when visiting a new LCS for the first time. Can’t wait to dive in.
Is it worth it? Is it any good? I'm thinking about buying it.
@@JohnnyComelately-eb5zv I liked it enough to get volume 2!
@@sleekgeekcollectibles ok thanks! It's a lot of money but I would like to get all three at some point, if it maintains a high standard👍
@@JohnnyComelately-eb5zv I finished 2 recently and liked it also. Need to find 3 now.
Man just goes to show you've read so much more than I even though I am "the comic guy" within my own family. Anyway excellent list!
Solid list!
I loved "The Invisibles." (Grant Morrison) I'm sure many do not. But I did.
By the way, your service is excellent. Quick shipping, great packaging, and no sneaky added charges.
Solid list.
Serious house on serious earth is probably my next novel
Superman Red Son is one of the top 10 of all-time i think, as is Daredevil Born Again, and Sheriff of Babylon by Tom King/ Mitch Gerads
Thank goodness I was starting to go through mint hunter withdrawals lol best channel
His service is also great. Quick shipping and no sneaky added charges.
Quite a few of those I don’t know, but it is certainly incomplete without some mention of Claremont’s XMen or the Claremont/ Miller Wolverine…
Personally I would’ve added Lone Wolf and Cub and Iron Man Demon in a Bottle. Great list!
What about Sin City? Great video
Great list
Glad you think so!
Haven't read many of the novels listed. Guess I've got a lot of reading ahead of me. In the meanwhile, in no particular order, listed below are the novels not mentioned.
*American Flagg* by Howard Chaykin
*Batman Strange Apparitions* by Steve Engelhart & Marshall Rogers
*Green Lantern/Green Arrow* by Dennis O'Neil & Neal Adams
*Mister X* by Dean Motter
*Batman/Grendel* by Matt Wagner
*Captain America: White, Daredevil: Yellow, Spider-Man: Blue, Hulk: Gray* by Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale
*Grendel: Red White & Black, Grendel: Black, White & Red* by Matt Wagner
Pleasant surprise to see PERSEPOLIS so high on the list, marvellous book.
Persepolis rules!
Leaven’s last hunt should be squeezed into there somewhere! Otherwise great list!🎉
Kraven’s last hunt!
@@gregwait35532:07 it's on there
Love the Batman and the Morrison representation but have you not read Irredeemable? It has to be on that list.
Would suggest "100 best comic runs" as a title to avoid confusion.
Agreed. Of the books listed, the only ones that were actual graphic novels were Maus, Arkham Asylum, A Contract with God, and maybe Killing Joke (I'm tempted to call it a one-shot myself, but it's at least longer than a traditional comic book). The rest were reprinted collections of limited and ongoing series, which are only graphic novels if you are using the term as a catch all for any trade paperback or hardcover that collects comic book content.
I said the same. Most of these are good stories and nice runs but not graphic novels in my book. I might stretch the definition of graphic novels to include a collected mini series like Watchmen or Golden Age that were always meant to be collected into one book. But a run on Daredevil is not a graphic novel unless all comics are graphic novels now.
Besides what has already been mentioned in the video, here are a few of my favorite original graphic novels
Superhero OGNs
Silver Surfer: The Ultimate Cosmic Experience by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby
The Death of Captain Marvel by Jim Starlin
Batman: Son of the Demon by Mike W. Barr & Jerry Bingham
God Loves, Man Kills by Chris Claremont & Brent Anderson
Emperor Doom by Dave Michelinie & Bob Hall
Spider-Man: Spirits of the Earth by Charles Vess
The Power of Shazam by Jerry Ordway
Superman: Peace on Earth by Paul Dini & Alex Ross
Wonder Woman: The True Amazon by Jill Thompson
Fantastic Four: Full Circle by Alex Ross
Non-Superhero OGNs
Chandler: Red Tide by Jim Steranko
Our Cancer Year by Harvey Pekar, Joyce Brabner, & Frank Stack
Ghost World by Daniel Clowes
Fax from Sajevo by Joe Kubert
Pride of Baghdad by Brian K Vaughan & Nico Henrichon
Scary Godmother by Jill Thompson
My Friend Dahmer by Derf Backderf
Kill My Mother by Jules Feiffer
Smile by Raina Telgemeier
Monsters by Barry Windsor-Smith
Lots of good stuff there
Everyone should read dreadstar and buy the omnibus. Jim is a treasure of an artist who has had tragedy and is working his way back.
Id put Batman New 52, All Star Superman and Black Hammer way way higher and Killing Joke at #1.
I am planning on reading a few of these this year for the first time including Sandman, just finished reading the Batman vampire saga, loved it.
Alaan moore has way better stories than that one imho
I felt the entire age of apocalypse was very well, drawn and incredible story
Top 5 runs I've read SO FAR (and that I can think of recently):
5. Clean Room: Simone
4. Plastic: Wagner
3. The Lone Ranger: Russell
2. Starman: Robinson
1. Hawkman: Venditti (biased, lol)
Hawkman by Venditti is one of the most underrated books of the last decade
No Dark Phoenix Saga and Abbnett and Lanning were also writing Nova when they were writing Guardians. Both runs were good. Geoff John's Flash and JSA!
I'll start by saying my list is both bias and I just haven't read tons of series
5 - Invincible (only read 1st compendium so far but love it)
4 - Judge Dredd: The Pit
3 - Walking Dead
2 - Watchmen
1 - Judge Dredd: America
my top ten was mostly populated with Dredd arcs so here a top 5 lol
Make a longer version
I would add Good Asian, Something is Killing the Children, and Gideon Falls
My favorites, more or less:
1. Watchmen (Moore & Gibbons)
2. Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth (C. Ware)
3. Black Hole (C. Burnes)
4. From Hell (Moore & Campbell)
5. My Friend Dahmer (Derf)
6. Berlin (J. Lutes)
7. Sabrina (N. Drnaso)
8. Multiple Warheads (B. Graham)
9. Uzamaki (J. Ito)
10. Acting Class (N. Drnaso)
DMZ, Sin City, Tom Strong, Ronin and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Kravens last hunt darn spellcheck!😮
Just have to say that Dreadstar is way higher on list for me. Especially most of the first 24 issues.
All Star Superman, Black Hammer & TDKR are all too low but great list otherwise!
You should check out:
Crisis on Infinite Earths (definitely a big influence on Infinity Gauntlet & Hickman Avengers)
Claremont & Byrne X-men
Jason Aaron & RM Guera’s Scalped, which is a straight up masterpiece if you like crime comics.
Also The Savage Dragon since you like Hellboy and Invincible.
Dawg he’s 100% read crisis on infinite earths
@@K33N35 maybe he forgot to put it on the list? 🤔
@@ShogunZIlla it doesn’t belong in this video bc it was a limited series. There’s another video that covers them I’m pretty sure
I own maus but havent read it yet. Going to start now.
How was it?
Honestly, that's a great list. The only thing I can think of, off the top of my head, that you didn't mention would be The Maxx. But that only counts as a graphic novel if you count reprints of monthly issues.
The original Amalgam DC / Marvel Comics collaboration is one I would have included in this list.
Oohh solid choice!
I would put Daredevil Born Again by Frank Miller
I would say Batman Hush, Death and Return of Superman, and the Star Wars Dark Empire series should be on that list. Those are easy ones to reread again and again.
Oh and Transformers More Than Meets the Eye IDW series is a sneaky add.
I’m one of the very few people that believes Hush is overrated. I can think of 10 Bat books I liked more!
@@MintHunterComics did you watch the animated movie of Hush? It was pretty good! Another one I thought of was Blackest Night.
Criminal, Deadly Class, Brubaker Captain America, Sandman, jason Aaron's Thor, The Many Deaths if Laila Starr, infidel, Fatale, Desender/Asunder, and Locke & Key. Honorable Mention Moore's Swamp Thing and of course Watchman is great
I would have added "HAPPY!" By Grant Morrison
For me, I’d have to add Thor:God of Thunder, Many Deaths of Laila Starr, these savage shores, do a power bomb, and infamous iron man.
Definitely add Frank Miller's hard-boiled and and Geoff Jones Shaolin cowboy and Frank Miller's Daredevil original run Bernie wrightson original Swamp Thing run but I agree with most of your list being DC and Indies always felt DC and Indies had better stories an artwork than Marvel
'Ice Cream Man' is so good
I would have had Wonder Woman the Perez run, and Xfactor the Peter David run (my personal favorite)
Like your list. But some of your pics are mangas / Franco-Belgium "bande dessinée". And if you talk about "comics" in the broad terme to include those formats, then i'm very much not okay with more than half of your list.
I loved “The Elixir” 2011
A great one I would add in there is the Marvel Zombies. It's so good!
Great choice
I would have to have Fatale in there somewhere
Ok!
The Flash: Blitz-where Hunter Zoloman becomes the new Zoom and tortures Wally West-four intense issues
100? I'm going to do terrible on Friday's quiz.
Missing Fables for me and maybe killadelphia. also transmetropolitan is in the top10 for me
Dc Side- great darkness saga
Marvel- Dark phoenix saga
Great Darkness Saga now there is a hugely underrated arc!! Major kudos bringing that one to the "light" lol
Damn no love for spawn ?
10 - Iron Man: Extremis
9 - Superman: Space Age
8 - DC: The New Frontier
7 - Batman: Fortress
6 - Captain America: White
5 - Nightwing: Leaping Into the Light
4 - Superman For All Seasons
3 - The Walking Dead
2 - Detective Comics: Terminal
1 - Batman: Year One
I wanna add at least one Sin City graphic novel, but I haven't read any of them in nearly 10 years. If I were including one-shots, I would remove Iron Man: Extremis, keep the top 2 the same, and move the rest down to make room for "Dante" (Image Comics) at #3.
Green Arrow & The Longbow Hunters saga gotta be top 50 imo.
I did like green arrow series longbow hunters
As ,long as Grant Morrison's "Doom Patrol" is in the Top 10 this list is fine with me.
From what I've read so far and In no particular order except first and last:
Savage She Hulk
Rainbow Rowell She Hulk
Peter David's X-Factor (Vol.2)
Final Night
Supreme Power
Planet Hulk
Peter David's She Hulk
Boxers And Saints
Injustice 2
Injustice
Ultimate Spiderman
Astro City
Gotham Central
Warren Ellis' The Authority
The Walking Dead
Crisis On Infinite Earths
Geoff Johns/Peter Tomasi/Tony Bedard Green Lantern
Geoff Johns Flash (Vol. 3)
Infinity Gauntlet
Jeff Lemire's The Terrifics
Invincible Iron Man
Civil War
Sinestro (New 52)
All Star Superman
Dr. Strange/Dr. Doom Triumph and Torment
Madame Mirage
Avatar The Rift
Avatar The Search
Starlight
Earth 2 (New 52)
Break those down into 10's and give explanation of ranking. 100-90, 89-80 down to your top 10.
Superman Red Son
Watchmen is deserving - Sin City tho?
Batgirl Year One was good too.
I know there are some Western comics people always cite as "the greatest". But I don't feel like there's ACTUALLY a definitive and widely popular list of the greatest western comics.
If you look at Japanese Manga in comparison, there's a pretty clear cut list of the greatest works.
Whereas in the west you kind of have two different lists, one would be popularity, and the other would be quality of the work and the specific run.
This whole tradition of western comics to just make endless runs that never really conclude or when they do they are rebooted several times over makes it impossible to for instance reconcile the popularity of a character like Spider-man, and actually cite exactly WHICH of his comics and runs are legitimately GOOD all the way through.
In fact the two lists differ to such an extent that while you may find Spider-man at the top of popularity you will barely find any spider-man comics ACTUALLY at the top of stories.
There's also a massive problem with old stories, and old art becoming extremely outdated. The initial Spawn run for instance looks insanely amateur to the current comics.
This adds an additional category for the "best comics" of all time, which would be the "best for their time" category. Because MOST of these don't actually hold up.
One thing I really wish we'd see more of in DC and Marvel and other big comic IPs is remakes, not just reboots. But actual rewritten and repainted DEFINITIVE versions of the classical stories.
Modernized and adapted to modern quality, while retaining the foundation and classic stories to a large degree.
I feel like that would be such a great way to rejuvinate and basically honor the legacy stories.
While working somewhat like a movie adaptation, where you may cut, alter, improve designs etc to fit a higher quality definitive version with new art and everything.
Oh well.
u need to compare mangas and comics
Nick Fury vs SHIELD did not get in ?
Venom. Donny Cates
ONE PIECE AND BERSERK?! 🗣🔥
Oh my, oh my. Calling this "best graphic novels of all time" is just not right. "Donald Duck", "Sweet Tooth", "The Walking Soap Opera"... Never heard of "The Days That Disappear" (le Boucher)? "Old Man Logan" (Millar), "Sin City" (Hard Goodbye, Yellow Bastard, Big Fat Kill), "The Sculptor" (McCloud), "Top Ten" (Moore), Paco Roca graphic novels, multiple issues of B-man better than "The Cult"...
The maxx!! You forgot the maxx
DC/Vertigo Slams
Forgot sin city and blacksad
yep!
Ultimate spiderman
bro put the the boys comic in top 100
Well, there are some HUGE misses although the list is good. ex. Scalped, Sin City, Criminal, Sleeper
I don’t really get what everyone loves about Persepolis? I read the first book and wasn’t all that impressed. Didn’t even feel the need to read the second. It felt like though some wild things happened, and it is all biographical , nothing about how the story was told or drawn engaged me like I was with Maus.
Fair enough!
Thumb up for you. Disappointing story. Very overrated. Protagonist born in a wealthy iranian family never bothers to explain where the revolution came from. Religious fanatics out of nowhere. Art style makes some brutal scene - less serious.
Not in the order:
The Nikopol Trilogy
The Metabarons
The Incal
My Favorite Thing Is Monsters
Franquin's Last Laugh
Blacksad
V for Vendetta
Maus
The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck
A Distant Neighborhood (Jiro Taniguchi)
Calvin and Hobbes
Hitler = SS
The only one I disagree with is "The Boys." The Boy's to me is kinda.. not good?. I also would have included Grant's Run with Batman and Robin, as well as the 90s Nightwing run.
It turns out a LOT of people think The Boys is mediocre! I'm honestly surprised!
A run of comics reprinted into book form is not a graphic novel.
okay....
Am I the only one that likes Fables?
No! Plenty do. I haven’t read it
I think lists like this are unhelpful without even just a little context.
I'm definitely interested in checking a few of these out but I'd like to know why they made your list.
Fair enough!
Where’s Berserk?
I think he didn't read it.
1. One piece
2. Berserk
3. Claymore
4. Naruto
5. Bleach
6. Demon slayer
7. One punch man
8. My hero academia
9. Fist of the North Star
10. Fullmetal alchemist
For non manga
1. Locke and key
2. Preacher
3. Hellboy
4. Elfquest
5. Sandman
6. Sin city
7. Slaine
8. Defoe
9. Requiem vampire knight
10. ABC warriors
Not necessarily in that order
I would have included JoJo’s bizarre adventure( especially steel ball run), Uzumaki, chainsaw man(maybe), Death note and attack on titan p.s. apologies for a ver,y late comment.
@@Riseofziggy JoJo definitely should be high up. Also AoT. I hate deathnote - so talky, there’s no reason for it to be a manga and bad art. Uzumaki - unique, creepy, interesting, but one-note and ultimately shallow. A curiosity that’s worth experiencing but I wouldnt rate it that highly. Chainsaw man I’ve read a few volumes of; ill have to get back to that at some point. The thing is there is just so much good manga its overwhelming, and very few comics that even come close. Although i have been reading some great comics which i would now put at the top of my non-manga list - Carl barks and Don Rosa Donald Duck, Asterix, Quest for the time bird, and Spirou (just Franquin).
@@reginaldforthright805 yeah death note can drag on also I forgot hunters hunter. Also also for comics I highly recommend hellblazer, swamp thing, and watchmen definitely worth a read if yo haven’t already as well as a lot of other of Frank miller and Alan moores work especially with Batman. I personally like darker storylines so forgive me for my bias it’s just a suggestion 😀.
@@Riseofziggy i do like hellblazer especially the early part and Garth Ennis run and also Moore’s swamp thing. My problem is these works aren’t really visual and don’t make proper use of the medium. They’re antiquated relics of the past, based on 30s pulps with their attendant stiffness and verbosity that predate major developments in film and animation. Whereas manga was influenced by Disney and Kurosawa and has always had excellent visual storytelling, and Franco Belgian comics have a large Disney influence.
I wonder if one day Americans will discover that comics, and graphic novels in particular, can be so much more than the world of superheroes (often mediocre), this is why, with a few exceptions, European comics are superior to American ones.
Yeah but Batman
Shut the hell up
who the fuck thinks that geoff jhons's gl is top 3 gn of all time xD
A lot of people lol
Maximum carnage
Watchmen 😶🌫️😶🌫️💵🔥🔥🐐🐐🐐💵💵
New Teen Titans
No sin city? Really?
No walking dead?
2:19
Whoops must have missed it
