GIANT WASTE OF MONEY! - Antminer D3 ASIC Miner
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 жов 2024
- ASIC vs GPU mining? Which one is better? Which one is more profitable? Which one has longer staying power? We got our hands on an Antminer D3 and did a bit of testing to check out what the current ASIC market is like. While this may not be true of all ASIC miners in general, the Antminer D3 is a giant pile of wasted cash.

Hello this is the police may I help you.....
A noise complaint? Can you describe the noise? Someone left the engines running on a 747..... and you don't live next to an airport.
got one, not mine tho. living in apartment. the sound is really loud and the heat is soo hot. but there's no complain from neighbor which is good. electric cost, terrible.
i believe there might be a way to replace that noisy cooler with a passive large radiator and a very silent large cooler.( ..like 1 square meter.
diGritz1 yeah they really are that loud. I had two and tried to change the fans to something quieter...doesn’t work since the vitamin crap works on a wind tunnel concept.
Ha ha now I can't work out if your comment is relevant :)
Lol. Love it. I tried to peacefully coexist with Antminer S1's back in the day. Thankfully it was winter and it heated the house but it was either take a sledgehammer to kill them which they fully deserved or get out of mining and sell them for what I could get. The noise and heat ultimately drove me out of mining with ASICs. Zero versatility for using them on anything but what they were designed for and you were lucky if they ship them straight away without running the hell out of them first when they're at their highest profitability. Nightmare.
oi mate, love how fast u talk. other vidz are 4x as long and don't even cover half of it! respect, and thx for the input !
Hey man, I just want to let you know this is my first experience with channel and I loved every minute. Keep it up!
You know what I love about Crypto Currency? The fact that this video is obsolete after just a month.
what a difference a year makes right?
@@dsan6643 and 3 years later the world is just not the same
@@RochesterOliveira hi,is this worth 300 usd in 2021?
I legit laughed when I heard the sound it makes XD It's literally like a jet engine!!
I'm glad that I found this. I was just about to make the purchase.
Thanks for uploading at 60hz it makes a huge difference liked the video
Glad you enjoy it!
Awesome video, always wondered how the ASICs perform. also on thing, you're already half way to 44k.. congrats on the progress Brett :)
+Keanu du Plessis Thanks Keanu!!! Glad the video was helpful!
Though the ASICs ( the newer ones at least) have crazy payouts per month, i'm still sticking to my gpu rig. Has a different experience that ASIC doesn't have.
Seriously great videos and guides/informational. Seen more then a couple didnt even realize it till i was on a 4th video.
this was a honest review man ... i subscribed .liked it .. keep up !
Bestbest explanation about asic I found on the internet. TKS
I like your style with taking complicated subjects and breaking them down to simple terms...can you do a video on mining with a Raspberry Pi ? Thanks for your videos...the fast pace is great...more information without boring filler-talk! ;)
Wow! Might as well work on an air field without ear cups! Although I don't mine, I do find your mining videos very entertaining!
+Anthony Pierre Appreciate it! We try to keep them light and not too deep down the mining rabbit hole since we're a tech channel, not a mining channel.
Yeah, what's up with this guy shouting?
Just change the fucking fan
Dude, your video camera quality is awesome!
Thanks friend.
Your videos n sounds is very clear excellent videos :)
Here 2020, that thing makes $0.15/day. I bought one of these for the power supply, because I got them both for $40 and really needed a high amperage power supply. A super good deal for a 1,200watt power supply.
@HypnoBoygaming Just bought a Antminer S9j for about $434. That would make $3+/day which is actually pretty good. Along with my other miners, I'll pay it off in just 30 days.
You make Awesome videos dude. Keep making excellent content.
trying to teach my dad about cryptocurrency, am going to get there eventually, hopefully
My dad finally invested in LTC not too long ago, trying to talk him in to mining, would save him on heating.
Good video quality dude
3:16 it sounded like a F1 car 😆
Basically. :D
no way it did, current F1 cars are much quieter than that.
Sounds like starting fighter jet.
I've been curious, what happens with ASIC miners when they are no longer useful. I think one would be interesting for research.
I guess I lucked out but I scored a November '17 version (19.6GH/s) off ebay ($900 w/PSU) and my profitability into January is averaging 13.50USD day via NiceHash. I believe everything you are saying about profitability, but then I also wonder about how many folks sell theirs after seeing videos like this! Another thing to touch on is that it only mines X11 -- and right now DASH is highly profitable, and many other coins can be mined through that algorithm. It is however very hot and very noisy, but perfect during the winter in my laundry room. Cheers!
Could I use those things to heat my house? Would that make it profitable
Very informative and entertaining video - well done, I'm proud to see SA holding it's own. Keep it up!
Very informative video. That needs way more views +1
Great video man.... Well done!
Hey guy, thanks for reviewing an asic
+Chaslasher H You're welcome!
I mean... I hadn't upgraded my gpu in 8 years, got a newish one that paid for itself in six months and now I'm ahead.... a great graphics card that lets me play new games. Sounds like a win to me.
I was hoping for a different outcome, always figured that a Antminer will be more profitable in the long run but to no avail, Great video Brett, as always keep it up bra ;)
Thanks Jako. Yeah, unfortunately, they're only good upfront.
I was completely surprised by this, I have the Antminer s7 which came out about a year or so ago and making about 7 a day running under clocked. Only paid 300 for it and with my desktop brining in 14 a day. Already paid it off the first month and have had it running for about 5 months now I believe. Using the earnings to upgrade my desktop over time. Was looking at this when it first came out over the Antminer s7 but the price tag was over my budget. But Ill say the price of bitcoin has helped with my mining a bit.
Wish I still could have gotten the L3+ as well. When I got into bitmining I was looking at the Antminer s7, s9, L3+, D3 or Innosilicon ones. Glad I didn't get the D3 but due to Innosilicon requiring bundle purchases only and the other ones being so expensive at the time and the risk I would have taken I went with the Antminer s7 but wish I had taken the risk seeing the prices now.
Receiving my Baikal X10 Giant today.. Yes, a dash miner at only 10ghs.. The kicker though... 4 more algos available, with two more being announced shortly.. 7 total.
If you are from South Africa and plan on purchasing ASIC machines in the future:
*If you pay with LTC or BTC, try get the coins well before buying at the lowest possible value as they use current coin values when batch is released
*The machines don't ship with power supplies so make sure you check the price of the APW or relevant PSU and have extra coins for that
*Shipping is expensive (roughly 10% of total order) and also needs to be paid with coins when placing order
*Import tax into South Africa was a little over 10% of total purchase
*The machines are too loud to keep inside a house or any location where neighbours aren't at least 30 meters away
*Ventilation is a must, which means you need to have a 24/7 opening into your house, in South Africa... I installed a mesh metal box with welded bolts over a small window and ran individual pipes for each machine (don't ignore this, the heat is really crazy)
*Main breaker from municipality is usually 63A. Plug breakers inside the house are usually 20A. These machines run 11-15A so you need dedicated breakers if you want to run more than one without strain
*Electricity cost where I live is R1,79 per kwh so I am currently making a remarkable R70.00 a month per D3
Julian Taylor per month or per day?
Thanks a ton UFD for this informative video \m/
I've just been researching mining for a few days and I have a question: How long do you have the gpu mining? Is it like 8 hrs per day? 24?
The L3+ is still viable. I have a couple of them. and they still give me +- $20 per day per miner. Meaning even if I got a brand new one today, I would still make ROI in 3 months. I get more $ per day for less than what it would cost for a GPU rig (which I have) of the same hashrate.
The S9 and L3+ is still worth it in my opinion.
+Dewet Lombard Except you have to guarantee that level of profitability over 3 months, which you can't do. Only for people with high risk tolerance.
yeah but s9's have been on market for over a year and are stable backed by bitcoin, bch, lots of others unlike dash. bad comparison imo. resale value 3 or 4times good luck getting that with graphics cards lol
It's like you picked the worst asic on the market to bash lol
+Gabe E Everybody miss the part where it's the only one I could get my hands on for free?
Dewet Lombard i think gpus Are a lot better than asics because you don’t need to wait 2-3 months
Electricity rates in Quebec are 5.8canadian cent per kWh, and in winter it is very cold. Just using the miner to heat the house in winter, or the swimming pool in summer, and you would probably break even within six months!
A video criticizing ASIC miners against GPUs while you have MSI boxes behind you. Well done.
I too wish to invest into a small scale jet engine.
Might get more use out of the small scale jet engine attached to a ride-on lawn mower.
Might not be able to mine coins, but does the job on the small property I'm on and can mow others lawns in a matter of minute for cash. Only issue is strapping into the seat and not falling off while mowing.
Hello, i have buy a D3 today, ist IT worst? Witch coin ist the best now?
This was a cool video, I'm still shocked at how loud that thing is 😂😂😂
+Waseem H Thanks Waseem! It's insanely loud. It's not okay.
Is it worth it in 2021?
5:14 a soul came to his body and the soul was a doggy soul 😂
Cheers man... saved me the trouble! thanks for the video!!!
That ASIC miner makes my r9 290X reference sound like a calm breeze.
I am sure if you plug in a hoover vacuum cleaner to suck out the heat, it would be less noisy
Go with Bitmain S17 pro or newer. Been hosting mine at TeslaWatt facility for 4 months. Great service, great support and not expensive.
What camera do you use? Very good quality
Can a GPU rig be used to render 3d graphics or is it so specialized that it can really only benefit from mining? I'm guessing it can.
Great Video just became a new sub. Do you have a video on mining litecoin?? Or do you have any suggestions??
Like always Very Helpful UFD Tech good work 50k coming in Christmas my friend.
Thanks Karan!!
Thanks for the tips
ASIC miners start out effectively overclocked. Not that I recommend buying an ASIC miner, but some people undervolt and underclock them to keep them turning a profit. It's all about improving the gigahash per kilowatt hour ratio, until it's favorable. Undervolting is not easy to do, and just underclocking wont reduce power usage much. People that reduced the power draw by 50% have shown less than a 50% reduction in the hashrate, which means the general efficiency of the hashing can be improved up to a point. If the alternative is selling the miner at a loss, then it's not a terrible plan (unless the person modding the miner shorts it out and destroys it).
Another use for old ASIC miners is low cost electric space heaters. If you can replace an ordinary space heater with almost any ASIC miner during the winter (and a pool lets you join) you'd get a partial "refund" on the electricity. But, it's a lot of work to set up for this purpose and the default fans are too loud. I was half tempted to buy an old $50 miner just to try this, but winter is almost over (maybe next fall).
Great video. Thank you
The ASIC miners are still profitable if you are into mining other ASIC coins as there are Exchanges that allow you to convert your coins into BTC which isn't as easy as it sounds but for some its something worth doing.
I know this is 2 years old but I have a question, I am looking at an antminer S or D9 NIB for 60used PSU about 50 USD. with shipping about 120USD . Is it even worth that to get it? I run some gpu mining with an ancient desktop, litecoin, dogecoin, and some bitcoin, mainly just for giggles, but I am a pensioner so very limited income. Ty for your time any opinions would be great.
Should I get s9 or mining rig with 3x gtx 1080ti and which is more profitable
Great video!
Theoretically if you didn't have to pay for electricity what is the best way to mine?
Awesomeness, & Very Educational As Well.. But Dam....... That Thing Is LOUD..!!!!!!!! Keep The Great Videos Going..
You might be able to get a bigger fan and ducked it down to the right size and use it in the winter to replace a heater
Hi , love your videos. Can you comment on all issues with D3 And if you have any fixes. I have several that do not show hash boards or are missing chips. All have the most recent firmware flashed and all connectors have been checked. One doesn't even appear in IP address search anymore. Any help from other viewers and subscribers is also greatly appreciated. Thanks, keep up the excellent work.
GOOD JOB
Lol watched an ad for asic miners right before watching this video
Can it run crysis????
this is a nightmare
gpu mining is like $100 per day maximum, what good is that compared to the lifespan of your system being reduced
Your facebook and instagram link doesn't work :(
+ZMASLO Dangit! You're right! Changed the URLs on Friday, forgot to change the links.
pleasure to help you! :D
OK! Nice. Might as well work on an air field without ear cups! Although I don't mine, I do find your mining videos very entertaining!
What do you think about Cloud mining ?? Have you done a vid on that I just started following you
In my opinion there are some other factors to consider and it is not a GIANT WASTE OF MONEY.
We need to consider the mindset of the person who is investing, for example I mined with made in China ASIC miners since Oct 2013 when BC was around US$200. They ranged from those thumb drive size ones (5 in one usb 3 hub etc.) to desktop size versions with hundreds of Gigahashes (they were like the ASIC Gods back in those days)
My thinking was not for a fast buck, but for the time when BC or the other alternatives reach such a disgustingly high difficulty that only tens if not hundreds of thousands of petahashes or even way above are needed to solve one block chain.
It was also for the time fast forward 4 years to 2017 (when I started in 2013) when it hit US$18,000 per BC.
Yes BC has dropped below 6000 recently and went back to 8000+. The point is short term ROI may be possible and even making a killing may be possible. BUT the advantage of the BC made from these ASIC miners lies in their value over a longer period of in my guesstimate 5 -10 years or up (give or take).
What little coins I have left after my mass sale last year, still values many times over the amount I spent on all those ASIC miners since 2013.
It is not what they can make for you now, but what that is made and how much it is worth eventually at some point of time.
On the other hand and most likely gonna get flamed for this, I agree with you totally on GPU mining.
Great info. Thanks
Nice video very impormative.. keep it up
+markalious Thanks friend.
Hi brother, but only statement. I want to know either the state or weather in general about these drives. Is it an advantage of ethereal mining and the best machine wich is better for mining ethereum
You look like Malcolm from Malcolm in the Middle
kitsep McCascal not really
he does... except I couldn't concentrate really with A) the NOISE.. of his voice... and B) DAT NECK ZIT HOLY CRAP!
More like wallace from wallace and gromit :)
Is it profitable if you are running Solar?
i want to build a rig with GTX 1080. should i buy the 11 Gb or the 8 Gb since the price diffrent is almost 300$!! will the 8 Gb do same job as the 11 GB?
Wait! Are you talking about the 11Gb/s memory GTX 1080 or the 11GB memory GTX 1080? Cuz if it's the 11Gb/s, then it's not worth $300. If it's the 11GB memory, then that's actually a completely different GPU, the 1080 Ti.
yes the GTX 1080 Ti with 11 GB memory and the other one that is 1080 8 Gb Memory.
Couple things: While I agree that it's loud and the D3 doesn't make as much profit as it used to, the D3 is probably the worse of the miners out there. I'm mining with the S9 and L3+ and both of those have been increasing in profitability as the bitcoin and litecoin has been climbing. S9 reached ROI in a little under 3 months while the L3+ took about 4 months.
You modded GPUs for mining could you possibly make a video about replacing the fans on the ASIC to help with the noise?
Best off to mine ETC with it as its still highly profitable now
100% agree with your analysis, the noise!, oh my.... Insane hehe
You can significantly reduce the noise the ASIC's make by making soundproofing box.I've gone from x2 ASIC's from 78db to 55~
Do you have links to a DIY? Or could you share your build? Do you have it near external air?
hey B - excellent vid. completely agree :-) whiny whiner miners LOL! I'm currently mining with my 1080ti - get n around R1800 - R2100 p/m. However it's not 24/7 mining, only during the day and off in the evening and weekends for gaming lol! ever thought of comparing high end GPU's to Antminers? or how big of a mining rig (high-end) would you need to be on par with a antminer?
GREAT MAN you managed to reduce your word flowwwww ahah
Now we can follow you !
Well done!!!!
I buy used miners so that I can mine with free electricity from apartment.
+Aashay Tambi Nice! Then it's definitely a better deal
UFD Tech The apartment has 12 breakers. So since 2013 I kept buying all the cheap asics and gpus. I look at hash/$ not hash/watts. I made so much buy this way.
Hey Tambi what machines do you run currently?
im sure your landlord loves you lol
+Unflushablepiss
I have some s7, s5, bunch of 290s and 290xs, 480s, 470, 280s, 580s, 980 ti, 1070s, 7970s, 7870s, i7 4770k, 6600, ryzen 1700, 9590, 370(a 4gb card that I bought for 40 with a wireless mouse, heatsink, case, and ram), some 1 dollar harddrives mining burst. Also a fury, and this funky litecoin asic miner.
I got this apartment I got just has this equipment. I pay 600 dollars a month. And have verizon gigabyte, and renters insurance.
This building is huge so they wont find out who it is.
All in all if i did this in my apartment I would be paying over 600 dollars for the electric bill alone. So this is so worth it.
Also I host other peoples equipment for a 40 dollar flat fee per device. So i got 10 other things in there so making money all day.
Just like during gold rushes, the people who make the money are the people who sell the tools. Not the miners.
Yeah people don't buy asic , Let the big farm do it , they don't know what they are doing ... hahahah yeah ... Thanks for that video ... You know your stuff .. Showing the price on amazon instead of the real price ... great idea ... so people won't know you could buy them for 1500$ and yeah Antminer D3 are not profitable , Don't mine Cannabis coin with it , like i did , because you could make ton of money like i did . Stay on the gpu guys . This guy know his stuff ... Oh btw i was mining 6$ in Cann in october , it was 2 cent . now it's 28 cent just saying ... 6$ x 14 ...
84$ per miner , per day ... yeah this is giant waste of money ... i'm on full profit since christmas 2 month after i got the d3 ... Jeez can't believe it , if only i had listen to somebody like you , i will not have made that mistake ... lol
My best advice is buy one, test it and see for yourself .
S9 are nearly 2 years old , and still make 38$ us per days , so shelf life of 3 month my ass ...
Can anyone explain to me: what's the point of manufacturing and selling these?
Couldn't the manufacturer just manufacture the cutting edge ASIC hardware and simply use it. Wouldn't that be more profitable?
You are the Linus of South Africa!!!!
Its a classic supply/demand thing, there were too many D3s out there too quickly and it was only matter of time until miners would stop selling Dash cheap as they were getting less and less of it. This was one of the root causes for Dash price nearly trippling in last month, now into future you can expect X11 algorythm will get much less attention, because its obviously not as attractive and profitable as S9/L3+. In my mind thats a good thing, because there are new currencies being made every day, X11 network hashrate will spread into them, lowering the continous decrease of profitability. And hell, the only thing(that I know of) that is better than D3 is A5 and it goes for 10k USD, which would have ROI of more than 2years with current prices, leaving D3 still being the more sensible out of the two.
This means that buying A5 even now in presale does not make sense, unless ofcourse... there is significant price increase coming, which quite frankly is to be expected, because in a long term there will be no supply otherwise. Which gives you loud and clear message, price of Dash has to go further up, because difficulty will not go down anytime soon, so Im sticking with mining and holding dash, until I break even and then I change my strategy to sell whenever it seems convenient.
Not saying its great investment, definitely is one of the worst that un-educated person in cryptoworld can make, because if you just plug and play, take out daily profits, buy it for 2kUSD, you will hardly get your investment back. But if you do the research and work with your miners, time your Dash sell offs properly, you can definitely end up being profitable.
Bottom line, isnt gpu mining easier and safer with much less hustle? Hell yea.. Is D3 going to make you rich? Probably not but I dont think its all that bad as "average crypto enthusiast" thinks it is :-)
Wouldn't those machines be perfect for water cooling or so?
Great Vid thanks
I have a greenhouse that I spend $1000 for propane a month heating in January and February, How many do you think I'd need to to replace that?
+speadskater A few. I'm sure your propane heater is likely putting out more than 1100W of heat.
UFD Tech looking at the math, I think it's only 5000 watt (~20,000 btu, but not consistently).
this person knows his facts. and he just needs to breath more and laugh more too
Wow, Dude!. I'm Loving the Vids.. :0. Quality 10/10.
Dude that thing literally scared me because of how loud it was
Peace sound! true spirituality feeling sounds from ur office!
SOOO Glad I watched this. DEF not buying one now. Add the price of AC if its the summer and with Hydro and the increasing difficulty they will be useless very quickly.
You picked the wrong ASIC miner. S9 is profitable for a long time, and much more profitable than GPU miners at equivalent price. However, GPU mining is a safer path compared to ASIC.
+davidletterboyz Did you watch the vid? I didn't pick the D3. The D3 chose me.
HEY, Why is it not possiable to update the miner with new software ? All you should need is a new logic board.
Thanks for this video Paul Walker.
No probs.
;) seriously, great video.
I cant even begin to imagine being able to afford getting a decent gaming pc let alone afford to go into mining. Currently have I3, integrated graphics and 4gb of ram which is my laptop and itd be awesome to win that 1070 ti to take a huge price off what i need to get that gaming pc id love to have going
