The "joke" may not have been the best, but Ron is an idiot. Who gets their hopes up like that because of a kiss on the cheek? And Evan? He's the biggest idiot, a real wimp who obviously has real problems with his masculinity. She's lucky she dodged the bullet and got rid of that wimp!
I couldn't agree more. I've heard several variations of this story. It always strikes me that the boyfriend (Evan in this case), was looking for an excuse to get out of the relationship because he's not secure enough to be in one to begin with.
