    Being treated like an object is exactly why I dumped my first boyfriend. Dude would legit get mad if I said no, which I rarely did because I was young and wanted to make my first relationship work. I worked twelve hour shifts as an autism therapist and I had extremely violent clients. I'd go to his place after spending the day getting the crap beat out of me and would just want to relax and watch a movie. He would say that's all we were going to do but literally ten minutes in he'd be pawing all over me. One time when I said no he turned off the movie, started playing a video game, and completely ignored me. After fifteen minutes I decided screw his petulant ass I'm leaving. He asked where I was going and I said home because he clearly didn't want to spend any actual time with me. His response was "well I just don't like to lose." Because apparently sex was a game to him and his goal was to always get what he wanted. I'm mad at myself that it took another month after that incident for me to say bye forever. I didn't realize how much he stressed me out until after I was done.

    Can we talk about how these NOFAP guys are still objectifying women similarly to the porn addicts were described.

      Yeah I’ve noticed a lot of guys will hear a critique of watching porn and act like they’re being told not to masturbate. As if they can’t even imagine masturbating without it. Which is kinda concerning.. like a totally natural act has been completely highjacked by porn producers.

    • @RetakeAmerica

      Porn is not a privilege if it is easily accessible. Something that destroys the human body should not be seen as some sort of good thing. By the way, they usually won't do it without the porn and even if they did, they wouldn't feel as much satisfaction (I don't know why you would feel satisfaction from destroying yourself). So they would stop masturbating.

      @@pseudonamed I mean, Pandas use porn. Most animals respond to visual stimulus to reproduce mating behavior. Before the 1800's, when people lived communally and slept in the same room as families, sex was just a noisy thing adults did at night. @@pseudonamedFurther considering that explicit sexual imagery dates back to the ancient city of Urr, pornographers have almost as old of a profession as prostitutes. This shift to porn becoming an industry rather than wall art and religious figures like Pan and Aphrodite (-14,000bce to -4,000bce), joke sculptures of wealthy aristocrats (-4,000bce to -900bce), actual roman pornographic collections (-800bce to 1100ace), and let's not forget all the nudies from the greatest artists of the rennaissance. To denigrate porn is pretty ridiculous to anyone who knows their history. The issue isn't porn; we've had that for literally longer than the wheel. What intelligent people are asking is "why is it becoming a cultural issue now? Has this happened before?" The answer is yes, it has happened before; when christian conservatives seized power in weimarcht germany. Sexual repression soars when christian nationalists take charge, and then they start putting people in extermination camps.

    Ugh...ok. a few things from a therapist. Masturbation is fine and healthy unless itinterferes with your ability to participate in normal life. Reducing porn use in young people can be good because of unrealistic expectations, lack of consent, and desensitization that can interfere in relationships later on, but this is more of a sex education issue. Biologically, sperm is healthiest when refreshed every 4 to 6 days. Beyond that, the sperm degrade, but this isn't particularly important unless you're trying to get a partner pregnant. Using addiction language for perfectly normal healthy behavior isn't helpful and only increases sexual shame. Everyone should be able to handle their sexual needs appropriately without shame prior to getting into a relationship. Expecting your partner to fulfill every sexual need at any time or believing self deprivation is virtuous is a recipe for resentment and poor sex life. This is just as harmful as purity culture.

Because I received basically no appropriate sex ed at all from either my religious family or school (the subject was basically not talked about at all with the former) like so many teenagers and young men p0rn was my only outlet to know about the subject and to deal with my “urges” and I can totally see how unrealistic it can be.
      Most of the shame went away only when I started questioning some of the core doctrines after years of cognitive dissonance (which included this topic) and when my faith fell apart I reasoned I was damned anyways no matter what I did now and soon after I lost faith in Christianity altogether, have to say I have a much healthier view to my sexuality now but the antidepressant that I’ve had to take for my religious trauma have lowered my sex drive but they’ve helped otherwise.

      @@monus782 That sounds like a long road, I'm glad you're feeling better. You are definitely not alone. I have no problem with religion if it's enriching someone's life and they aren't plagued by guilt and shame for natural human behavior, but unfortunately it is often the exception to grow up in modern religion with a healthy view of sexuality. The war on masturbation within Christian religion is primarily a modern and American thing from what I've read. Sort of a last ditch effort for control as society becomes more secular - claiming natural sexuality is sinful so you need to repent endlessly. It's so toxic. Teens are told any thought is sinful, but once they are married they're expected to make babies at a moments notice and it is often very traumatic. The Nofap stuff might be secular, but it still relies on the idea that you must repress natural sexuality instead of learning how to have healthy sexuality. It's still tired into shame and guilt because most people can't turn it off and will inevitably "relapse". Finding appropriate sexual outlets should be step one when kids go through puberty, followed by building skills to have a good relationship and building self confidence. That's the true path to happy healthy relationships. 😊

      For that reason I went to the campus therapist only to be told there was nothing wrong with me and it was the anxiety, I didn’t tell him about my religious background until our very last session but I didn’t believe his advice at the time and I reasoned that if masturbation was natural then it must be spiritually harmful so you shouldn’t do it at all anyways, that’s how deep the cognitive dissonance went. When my faith finally fell apart over a year after graduation I figured I was going to hell no matter what by that point so only then did all the guilt finally went, I wasted about a decade of my life feeling guilty over what’s perfectly natural and it may be the one thing I’ll never forgive my previous community for.

    As a kink positive feminist with a history of religious trauma, I see nsfw content + masturbation as being a different topic from misogyny. You can certainly use one to make the other worse, but there are plenty of misogynists who see women as objects without watching nsfw content. (Consider the fundamentalist obsession with ‘pure’ women.) There are healthy and unhealthy ways to interact with kink, it all depends very heavily on respect and communication.
    Additionally if anything in your life ever feels like you do it compulsively and are distressed about doing it, seek help for addictive style behaviors.

    • @monus782
      @monus782 5 місяців тому +6

      As someone who was part of a very conservative Catholic community who’s also dealing with religious trauma I totally second what you said, only reason I tried this method at all was because I was told I was going to hell for having sexy thoughts at all and looking at women a certain way unless I confessed my sins to a priest (which I did often).
      During that time I was pretty hostile towards feminism as well not because it threatened me as a man but because I saw it as a threat to my deeply held religious identity (mostly because of abortion) and flirted with some Manosphere ideologies, mostly the Men’s Rights crowd. I was also misogynistic enough to believe in complementarían theology and to believe that women not only couldn’t be priests but also had no right being anywhere close to the altar, I guess in that regard I fit the NoFap crowd perfectly back then.

      @keirak.3125 5 місяців тому

      I have a question regarding you being a kink positive feminist. do you think that there are certain kinks that are always misogynistic no matter how much respect and communication there is? For example, do you think men beating or degrading women is okay if it’s consensual?

    • @abbey5899
      @abbey5899 5 місяців тому +14

      @@keirak.3125 I think people can enter kink from an unhealthy place in their lives. I think shitty people can have kinks. These things are both true about people entering completely vanilla relationships as well. I don't really have any particular interest in shaming specific kinks, because that would mean speaking over people and trying to construct a specific narrative around a preference that could come from lots of wildly different places.
      When done between mutually consenting and respecting partners, it's playing pretend, like playing a video game. Sometimes you want to play a super violent video game with lots of gore - that doesn't mean you actually want to hurt people in real life. (Again - there are people who play violent video games who are violent in real life, but the specific video game a person plays does not determine whether they're a violent person or not. That is determined by them being a violent person.)
      I also think a lot of people tend to ignore the feelings of masochists when trying to point to 'abusive kinks', without understanding the conversations and negotiations around what kind of scene they want to experience that masochistic people typically have with their partners. Genuine consenting masochists (ie not anything seen in 50 Shades of Grey) have specific wants, goals, and needs. The kink isn't simply imposed upon them without their input.
      I've found that the comic book Sunstone by Stjepan Sejic best expresses what a lot of people like me wish more people knew about people with kinks, so I usually recc it in this sort of conversation.

      @@tarettime9392 A lot of people in the nofap movement are former addicts. Do you think can the average addict only spends 15 min a day on doing that? For guys who feel lonely and lack purpose in life, something that is super pleasurable and can be found two clicks away, can quickly turn into something toxic and uncontrollable.
      Going to the gym is in a way the complete opposite to this. It's a temporary pain you must endure to hopefully become more happy with yourself in the long run. If you constantly program your brain to seek out instant gratification activities, these long-term gratification activities becomes more difficult to pursue, hence why one affects the other. That is also why a lot of young people today struggle with their attention spans and can barely read a full book (myself included) because of TikTok and other high-dopamine habits.

    The thing that makes NoFap as a general concept seem incredibly suspicious (at least to me, though it's likely I'm not alone here) is that not fapping/looking at corn is infamously one of the initiation pledges of the Proud Boys, which makes some sense in an insidious way because groups like that wants their recruits to be undistracted from the group's goals as well as in a constant state of frustration that they can easily be manipulated into venting through doing something dangerous and violent.

      I was part of a Traditionalist Catholic community (Mass done in Latin and ignoring most of the changes that came after the 1960’s) and it was a pipeline towards the religious version of the alt-right for me for several years and the only reason why I tried this method at all is because I was told I was going to hell for rubbing one out at all, look at a woman a certain way or ever had any sexual thoughts at all unless I confessed it to the priest (which I did often) so all of this also applies to people in fundamentalist communities/cults as well.
      I understand that the concept in itself can be helpful to some people if they really can’t control their urges or consumption but like you I’m suspicious of most of the other claims and given that I wasted a decade being ashamed of my sexuality because a bunch of celibate priests told us to not even think about it at this point I’m very suspicious of anyone who preaches against any masturbation at all (although I know p0rn can be problematic and I get where some people are coming from with that) no matter their political or religious allegiances.

      I think the issue is using in excess, I like the NoFap community vibe and how they're really encouraging to eachother, very wholesome, I wish addictions could be treated like that more often
      but masterbating in excess or even using porn in excess... or even not doing those things in excess when theyre vitally important to you can be extremely damaging
      like obviously someone who has no sexual drive or limited one isnt gonna be bothered by a lack of self pleasure, but someone who has a high libido or very strong sexual desires can be very psychologically damaged by not self pleasuring
      I think of it like dieting, going vegetarian is totally valid, if you already arent a fan of meat then being vegetarian aint gonna bother you, but if you're anemic or love meat or have a restrictive ED (which I do have one), then becoming vegetarian can put your life at risk or at minimum cause psychological and financial damage

    An interesting thing that could have been mentioned is analyzing how an overarching force causes the negative experiences women have with men: misogyny and patriarchy basically. This impacts porn in a large way and said porn makes men act a way that the woman in the TikTok describes. However, as you say, that behavior doesn't necessarily stop when the porn stops. That would be an important challenge to NoFap crowd is to break down porn addiction as a piece to breaking down patriarchal attitudes.

    the older and more mentally healthy i become, my relationship with masturbation follows suit. these people are in absolute denial that they're depressed, addicted, what have you. they're addicted and if cold-turkey works for them, that's fine! but i question if they're on the right path when they make a movement out of it, using pseudo-science and shaming tactics to get other people in on it. you're not gross or bad for being addicted to masturbation-- your brain is susceptible to addictive behaviors and you need something less destructive that will give your brain that juicy dopamine. therapy, medication, and not falling into extreme behaviors when you're overcoming an addiction. tread lightly!
    -sincerely, a recovering love/sex, alcohol, and nicotine addict.
    Edit: Also, I commented this under someone else's post, but stop blaming sex workers for your addictions and behaviors. The problem isn't consensual, "violent" porn between two, consenting adults. The problem is sex education being lackluster and unavailable throughout our developing years. This is like saying you should ban video games or WWE because they promote violence. It's silly and this rhetoric harms sex workers. You're putting the blame on sex workers and taking it out of the hands of the *actual* offenders. We are not responsible for teaching you about sex, your parents and educators are.

      But I will say I agree it does no good to blame the sex work industry for your own lack of self control.

      Very good comment, I especially love the Edit you added. A big component of this nofap movement (not from everyone, but it's noticeable for sure) is a disgust or hatred for people who make sexual content, namely for sex workers, especially female sex workers, though it also extends to say NSFW artists. It's quite obviously connected to long-standing misogyny and sex negativity that's rampant in our society. The oh-so-quick and normalized act of labelling these women as "whores" and "sluts" and dismissing their humanity, often implying that they surely have "no self love," using their existence as an excuse to go on rants about how "women live life on easy mode," etc.
      And so much of that could be alleviated if we had more comprehensive and sensible sex education. The kind of sex ed that doesn't just stop at basic anatomy and a brief overview of some other things and then just leaving it there, but rather the kind that is willing to get into the details of consent, what healthy sexual relations should look like, how key communication is during the act, etc. The big problem there is there's a few too many people who either naively don't recognize the value in that being widespread, or you have those who actively *don't* want that to be a thing, which is maddening. We need more people to advocate for this, we only stand to benefit from more people in society being well informed on such a key component of the human condition (not ignoring asexual folks when I say that either of course, they'd benefit from it too).

    I find the movement fascinating, because it combines a bunch of things that you would not expect together. The idea that retained semen can travel up (the chakras) to be transformed (into the nectar of immortality, i.e. amrita) is an early medieval Indian idea, found in countless tantric and yogic treatises. These texts also describe how the "hero" (vira) becomes irresistably attractive to women due to this practice. The ultimate goal here can be liberation from rebirth, but more often than not it is "supernatural powers" (siddhis). So here we have basically word by word an ancient Hindu/Buddhist practice, embedded in a belief structure that involves things such as chakras and superpowers, being promoted by conservative Christians (!) and being celebrated by often rather irreligious young men with self-esteem or mental health issues as a form of alternative therapy in late capitalist Western societies where the social structures that the early Tantric authors intentionally tried to challenge and overcome, have withered away, leaving young people with a great sense of insecurity. It becomes even wilder once you realize that the only way those ideas could have ended up where they did is through movements such as theosophy and later the hippie movement, again very far removed from both medieval tantra and contemporary right-wing evangelicalism.
    For what it's worth, those ideas are also still prevalent in India and have become more popular again in recent years, due to the rise of hyper-masculine Hindu nationalism, as well as increased internet access rates and the popularity of new online gurus, but the narrative framework tends to be more closely linked to medieval predecessors and couched in a more openly religious or spiritual framework than its Western counterpart - at least for now. As proving that "ancient Indian wisdom" is "scientific" and most importantly was scientific before the West was is a central aspect of Hindu nationalist ideology-building, studies similar to the ones shown in the video are also being conducted in India and are cited by local proponents of semen retention as evidence just as much as those studies are by Western nofappers. So I assume those groups will increasingly mix and mingle and that might decenter the movement, making it less white and less Christian.

    The conversation about porn consumption and noFap really feels like looking at a symptom of a disease and thinking that it’s the root cause. Porn isn’t the cause of misogynistic behavior, misogyny and patriarchy are. Misogynistic men just gravitate towards porn and then think that’s the issue instead of doing the self work to stop treating and thinking of women as objects. People gravitate to porn BECAUSE it confirms their bias and shows them a world they already believe in, not that it’s changing their minds to suddenly be misogynistic. The issue was there all along, and will be after porn is gone. If porn suddenly disappeared tomorrow there would still be rampant misogyny

      @@mlee-w664 thank you for pointing out that blind spot, I seriously missed that and I’ll edit the post to include more detail. Something that goes hand in hand with patriarchy and the misogyny rooted therein, is the idealization of power. Power is seen as what truly makes a man a man, whether in business, politics, or the household. This bleeds into the porn industry, where it creates almost a feedback loop of consumer demand and then industry fulfilling that demand. I do think that the current porn industry has a huge issue with abuse, power dynamics, actors being pushed to do things they do not wish to, and there can be issues with consumption for some people. I think that for those who end up with consumption issues, there becomes a dependence on the dopamine and serotonin release, leading to a compulsive behavior pattern. This can happen for a myriad of reasons, but the root cause still isn’t the porn itself. It could be many things, such as past trauma, issues with serotonin receptors in the brain, neurological predisposition to addictive behaviors, or it could be psychosocial as well. When it becomes a compulsion it is often good to seek out a therapist or outside help. (I’ll add on more later I need to go to work rn)

I mean when im walking around i never look people in the eye i dont like eye contact personally but im never thinking about what someones eyes are doing until im in a moment of vulnerability with that person, and if theyre previous actions make that moment uncomfortable for me what they do with their eyes will just stand out as something you remember especially if youre like me and eye contact is very intimate and vulnerable, you dont want to make eye contact if you arent comfortable yet with that person.
