Greetings, my ac fans go to low speed as the compressor is trying to turn on, I hear some low electrical hum but I can't tell. Everything is clean and I even poured out both trays of water. At this stage I'm going to follow your tutorial here to see if its the capacitor. Is this the symptom your ac was having? Did you hear the fans go to low speed why the compressor was trying to turn on but doesn't?
My AC was making a buzzing noise, so yeah there was more noise than just the fan. I don't remember the velocity of the fans at the time the unit wasn't cooling. I believe the sound the unit was making is included in this video, but you have to use headphones and turn up the volume to hear it. So the compressor has a capacitor, the round cylinder one, and the fan also has its own capacitor, its a rectangular cube looking one. Both capacitors have the capacitance range listed on them. The best way to approach this is to get a capacitance meter and check the capacitance of each capacitor. In the video description I have a link to a $20 capacitance meter on Amazon, its the cheapest one I could find and it works well. As long as you have fans and ACs in your life, you will need a capacitance meter to check the capacitors in case they fail.
@ChavezHobbies I have a multimeter that has an option "200m", when I have it set to that I get a reading like yours where it starts at 3.1 then drop to the .3 range. Does my multimeter have the ability to get a reading?
@@damian3182 Budget multimeters don't have capacitance readings. The symbol for capacitance is uF, on some multimeters its listed as uA. I have two multimeters and neither can detect capacitance, that's why I had to buy that specific multimeter just for capacitance. You can buy a multimeter with capacitance readings but it has to specifically say it. You'll have to read the manual to check the capacitance with the meter.
My motor that pushes the heat out of the hose that goes out the window isn't working, would the capacitor cause this? I liked your video and would be grateful for your answer for my problem.
Sounds like your fan motor is not working. The capacitor I replaced in this video is for the AC compressor. The fan has its own capacitor, but it looks rectangular, you can actually see it above the cylinder capacitor in this video. Your best approach is to get a capacitance meter and check the capacitance of both the compressor capacitor and the fan capacitor. I have a link to a capacitance meter in the video description, its one of the cheapest ones you can buy and it works well. You're always going to have an AC for the rest of your life, so the capacitance meter pays for itself.
These portable units don't have a service port to add refrigerant. I would start with cleaning the coils (check the video description for a link on cleaning the unit). If the unit is low on refrigerant that means you have a leak somewhere. With the unit open but still connected, run the AC and spray soap and water on the copper lines to and from the compressor and evaporator to look for any leaks. They will show up as active bubbles if you have a leak. If no leaks and you cleaned everything, I would check the capacitor. You will need a capacitance meter to check the capacitor, a link to the cheapest one I could find is in the video description.
I think the capacitor gets damaged if the circuit is under current rating, for example when using a low amp extension cord. This is caused by the excessive heat that the capacitor is exposed to due to excessive resistance
It's not recommended to use an extension cord with these ACs. If you do, you will need at least a 14 AWG extension up to 50ft distance and that should provide enough amps. I wouldn't recommend running a 16 wire gauge cord. We did for a while and the plug had burn marks because it overheated.
Have you tried opening the unit and cleaning the condenser coil and evaporator coil? In the video description I posted a link to my video on how to clean the coils.
Does the compressor turn on? Do you hear it running? If the fans are running good, it could be compressor failure or a leak of refrigerant. If you want to check for leaks, with the cover off run the AC and spray soapy water on the copper AC lines that go through the coils.
i see that capaciator original says "protected" and the new ones not "protected". is this because there's already trip wire in the cord section? so doesn't need double protection?
Sounds like its not cooling. It could be the capacitor. Try it out and see if replacing the capacitor helps. Check the video description for more information.
Compressor works on mine, coils and fins are clean, fan speed is strong, but it is still not cooling the air it blows out. Does this mean the freon has leaked? I don't see any leakage.
Interesting. Yes, assuming the compressor is working good, all signs point to low refrigerant. Run the unit with the cover off and spray soapy water on all the AC lines and see if you can find the bubbles, which would indicate a leak. You can also buy a refrigerant leak detector on amazon and see if that helps to identify any leaks.
That's my next step before I decide to buy a new unit. I have hope that there's still a lot of gunk in the fins that can't simply be sucked or brushed out. This is for a less commonly used room so I can tinker with it, good way to learn how these things work as well.
I have to same unit and it blows cold air and the hose takes out he hot air, But it doesn't cool down the air for 5 hours..I have a 2 inch space under the door and have 10 foot ceiling. The room is 13' x 17' any suggestions?
For the 2 inch gap under the door, you can cover it with a door sweep, there are cheap ones at Home Depot. Portable ACs will not be able to cool down a room better than a window AC unit. I recommend portable AC only if you cannot install a window unit. If its blowing cool air, the only thing I can think of is to clean the coils, I have links in the video description to my video on cleaning the coils inside a portable AC. If you clean the inside but its still not cooling good, it just means you need a stronger unit. Something with more BTUs. A 8k BTU window unit will outperform a 8k BTU portable unit. My current window unit (6k BTU) in my office space is undersized so it takes a while to cool and never reaches a nice cool temp on a really hot day. I need to upgrade to a bigger unit with more BTUs.
1 Clean the coils. 2 Check the fan capacitor and compressor capacitor with a capacitance meter. There's a link to a capacitance meter and additional information in the video description.
There's two capacitors inside the AC. One is the cylinder shaped one that I replaced in this video and the other is rectangular shaped. Check capacitance of both capacitors. You can also check the motherboard to see if there are any burned components.
Thanks man! The capacitors test just fine. The fan motor is hard to find and a pain to get off so I’m going to go recycle the thing. I don’t know if it’s a European thing or not.
It's normal for compressors to make a buzzing noise when they're running You can hear it in my AC after I fixed it. The compressor has rubber feet to try to decrease noise from vibrations but sometimes the vibrations get through and shake the outer case of the AC.
@@ChavezDIY I research everywhere online and everyone is complaining about the compressor noise. it seems like a normal portable ac compressor sound. Some says it goes away after a few days or weeks of normal use. Although I think the rubber that's supposed to reduce noise is probably loose during transportation. It's sad. It's so loud
@@kitn.6130 All compressors make noise, but some are louder than others. With window ACs the compressor is right there in your room, haha, you'll be hearing it. I had a Honeywell 14K BTU portable AC unit that was louder than this Haier 8K BTU unit in this video. I also have a Frigidaire 5k window unit that is kinda quiet compared to my LG 6K BTU window unit.

You'll need a long screwdriver or long screwdriver bits to access the deep screws. Yikes 4 inches of cat hair and dust that's a lot, haha. A capacitor replacement would be the next cheapest investment to try. Any HVAC business or technician should be able to look at it. Good luck!
i'm stunned! i FIXED IT!!! 1st i ordered a 12" screwdriver from amazon… when i opened the electrical box, i discovered a capacitor EXACTLY like yours! so i just followed you the rest of the way. NO ONE, not even my brothers, were willing to help me! i'm so proud of myself! THANK YOU!!!!
There should be a capacitor that powers the fan. I would check the capacitance of your two large capacitors, the cylinder one and the rectangular one (located directly above the cylinder one in this video). My guess is that the cylinder one is for the compressor and the rectangular one is for the fan. You will need a capacitance meter to check them. The meter listed in the video description is cheapest one that I have found on amazon.
My compressor will kick on, the after a while it will turn off, the air won't be cold for a couple minute, then it will come back on and the unit will shake pretty hard. Could this still be the same thing in the video?
When was the last time you cleaned the coils on the unit? If the coils are dirty the unit could shut off due to overheating. Here is a video showing how to clean the coils ua-cam.com/video/lnJKBi-pB_4/v-deo.html If the coils are clean, then yeah the next thing I would look into is the capacitors. There is more than one capacitor, there's a square one that shows up inside my unit, that was going to be my next item to check. You'll need the capacitance meter to check your capacitors. $20 for the one I have in the video, link in the description. Its the cheapest one you'll find and you can resell it after.
I don't have any experience with that kind of problem. If you have your AC product manual it sometimes can give you troubleshooting tips. Try to find it online if you don't have it. Sometimes the red light can mean that you need to clean the removable screen filter. If it is not the filter light, maybe it's a power supply issue. Check the video description for a list of troubleshooting tips.
my portable air conditioner all work fine( fan and compressor are working) but it dosn't cool, it's very clean, no dirts!! any help here please!! the outside air tempreture is cool as well that should be hot not cool! Please help
There's a list of things to check in the video description. My compressor was working, but not cooling. My capacitor was operating below efficiency, it wasn't completely dead yet. You need a capacitance meter to check the capacitor. Just because the compressor is making a noise and the capacitor is not swollen, that does not mean the capacitor is good.
The fans have their own capacitor. Its a rectangular cube looking thing. You'll need a capacitance meter to check the fan capacitor. In the video description I have a link to the capacitance meter I used in the video.
That's interesting, the compressor is actually running? Does the compressor feel warm when running? Start with making sure the coils (evap and condenser) and air filters are clean. Next look for refrigerant leaks, low refrigerant can lead to no cooling. Look at the coils for refrigerant leaks, spray a mix of soap and water on the coils at different locations with the compressor running and look for air bubbles that may indicate a leak.
@@ChavezDIY I have a Haier 8,000 BTU portable ac also, with the same issue, compressor turning on but not cooling...I bought a brand new LG 11,000 BTU ac to replace the Haier...and I have kept the Haier portable ac as a possible future project...I have taken the Haier portable ac apart, and cleaned it thoroughly, in which inside and outside its so clean, its looks brand new, but it's still not working properly...
The fan has its own capacitor too, so you need to check that capacitor as well. You can't check it without a capacitance meter, I have one listed in the video description. Make sure that your coils are clean, Check the video description for a video on how to clean the coils inside.
I don't know HVAC diagnostics, just the basics. I would clean the coils if you haven't done that. Then I would check the capacitance of the compressor capacitor and fan capacitor. There's a link to a capacitance meter and some additional information in the video description.
Good question. So it is cooling but shaking a lot? I'm not sure, but something to look at is the compressor and the fans. You'll have to open it and run it with the case off so you can see if there is a fan that is off balance or the compressor rubber isolators are gone. The compressor shakes quite a bit and has rubber pads that isolate the vibrations. When those rubber pads go bad from cracking/breaking then the vibrations from the compressor will be transferred to the whole unit.
My ac turns on fan runs compressor runs air that comes out is cool but not cold. No visible burnt wires or components no swelling or leaking on the cap all radiators and vents are clear unit new lost the invoice so cant return it. I thought gas leak but i dont know how to tell
Just because the cap isn't swollen or leaking doesn't mean its good, you need to test it with a capacitance meter. It could be running below capacitance. In the video description I post a link to the cheapest capacitance meter you can find on amazon. If you want to check for leaks in the refrigerant lines, remove the cover, run the AC and spray soapy water on the lines. Leaks will show up as bubbles.
Iv sprayed water not soap water onto all the copper joins where they were braised together there was no bubbles or sounds of any kind had the ac running on its Coldst settings so now pulled the cap out and discharged it. My volt meter is uA not uF dose that make a difference. If put the probes on the back left red right and nothing displays
@@ChavezDIY just to be sure iv sprayed it again soapy water and again i can see no bubbles except from when the water is sprayed on. So fingers crossed its the cap.
No quick fixes and it requires HVAC tools/skills. I have seen videos where people will cut the copper line and use a brazing method to attach a schrader valve. Then they vacuum the copper lines with a vacuum machine and then add refrigerant (type and amount specified on the AC). Here's a video of someone doing that ua-cam.com/video/_bL7hN6LS4Q/v-deo.html
I'm sorry that didn't work for you. You need to use the capacitance meter to measure the capacitor before replacing it. It comes in handy. Capacitor failing is common problem and its likely you'll have air conditioning for the rest of your life so it pays for itself over time.
Here is my checklist for troubleshooting AC: Clean the filter Clean the coils Replace capacitors Check for leaks with system running using soapy water Touch compressor, should be hot Listen for fans, should be running Touch copper lines, one should be cold the other hot Check motherboard for burned components Check wires for any loose connections Check connectors for corrosion, clean off any corrosion with wire brush. If none of these items help, its likely the compressor has failed. The compressor is the most expensive part so you might as well look into another unit.
You have to open the unit and look at the numbers on the capacitor like I did with my unit. Take a picture to note the Voltage and capacitance numbers (uf).
@@arohashoyu Try this one amzn.to/3JtjgBu It's a 50uF capacitor, the voltage doesn't need to match exactly, you can have more voltage but not less. I searched amazon for "50uf round capacitor"
That's interesting. The beeping could be related to another issue. Check the owner's manual, sometimes they have troubleshooting guides in there that might help. If you don't have the manual, do a google search for it.
Can i pick your brain, i added a service valve to my portable ac, i belive i added to much refrigerant my compressor seems to turn on and off, and now im breaking a circuit!!! Help
I've had that happen with my car AC. I overcharged it and the compressor would turn on then turn off. It turns off due to overheating. The fix for my car AC was to slowly release some refrigerant until the compressor operated normally (stopped turning off).

Thanks for sharing your info.
You're welcome! =)
is it normal to hear the buzzing sound still? i have a toshiba brand new. its cooling fine but it's making buzzing noise
Buddy my haier cooler when i plug in it is shows all on’s in the digital bar and showing the temp and within a sec automatically getting turnoff and starting beep sound untill i unplug any suggestions
Have you tried cleaning the inside of the AC? I have a video on it ua-cam.com/video/lnJKBi-pB_4/v-deo.html
@@ChavezDIY so that is the problem??
Thank you! this helped us!
I'm glad it helped! =)
i removed all the screws EXCEPT there are 2 that are so deep i can't get to them. i was able to pry the back off enough to clean the coil grill-thingy, which had nearly 4 inches of cat hair plastered to it! but that didn't fix it. i can't open the unit any further--my guess is the prob is the capicitor b/c it buzzes like yours, too. can i bring it to a repair shop? it's a honeywell. thx!!! ♡h.
@@heidicleveland5887 You're welcome! That is awesome that you were able to do it yourself! ofcourse you could!!! You're now a DIYer!!
My rear exhast fan isnt kicking on with the compressor so it over heats, ideas? thanks!
@@ChavezDIY thank you, mine has a lot more screws and clips than yours :P Just trying to narrow it down first!
Hello my cost way doesn’t turn on it just has the red dot on do you know what the problem could be
I don't have any experience with that kind of problem.
Hi there mines the blower and compressor turns on but the fan from the top to blow air out doesn’t work
The fans have their own capacitor. Its a rectangular cube looking thing. You'll need a capacitance meter to check the fan capacitor. In the video description I have a link to the capacitance meter I used in the video.
Had a similar issue - i changed the capacitor and the compressor is running but still not cooling. Any ideas?
@@RobsCustomCreations you might have to replace the capacitor
@@ChavezDIY I have not tired looking for air bubbles. I would not know how to add 410a refrigerant. very clean filters and compressor is getting hot.
@@RobsCustomCreations I also kept mine as a project but still not getting cool.
What if you replaced the capacitor and it still not blowing cool air ?
The fan has its own capacitor too, so you need to check that capacitor as well. You can't check it without a capacitance meter, I have one listed in the video description. Make sure that your coils are clean, Check the video description for a video on how to clean the coils inside.
how much you charge for your service?
I don't do repairs for others. I just make the DIY videos.
Mine blow cold air for seconds but after that it stops .and no hot air coding from thé back
I don't know HVAC diagnostics, just the basics. I would clean the coils if you haven't done that. Then I would check the capacitance of the compressor capacitor and fan capacitor. There's a link to a capacitance meter and some additional information in the video description.
What does it mean when the ac shakes violently?
@@craygebrown8694 I think uA is for amperage, maybe that's why you get no readings.
What if it does this brand new?
If its not cooling and its brand new, return it if you can. If that's not an option, I would check the compressor capacitor with a capacitance meter.
Compressor work but leaking out freon. Haier only 2 years old. Any fixes.
Thanks. 👍

Hlo brother I need your help to unlock my pixel 3
What specific problem are you having with the Pixel 3 unlock?
I paid $20 for a new capacitor but unfortunately that wasnt my problem.
I'm sorry that didn't work for you. You need to use the capacitance meter to measure the capacitor before replacing it. It comes in handy. Capacitor failing is common problem and its likely you'll have air conditioning for the rest of your life so it pays for itself over time.
Here is my checklist for troubleshooting AC: Clean the filter
Clean the coils
Replace capacitors
Check for leaks with system running using soapy water
Touch compressor, should be hot
Listen for fans, should be running
Touch copper lines, one should be cold the other hot
Check motherboard for burned components
Check wires for any loose connections
Check connectors for corrosion, clean off any corrosion with wire brush. If none of these items help, its likely the compressor has failed. The compressor is the most expensive part so you might as well look into another unit.
i need help finding the right capacitor
You have to open the unit and look at the numbers on the capacitor like I did with my unit. Take a picture to note the Voltage and capacitance numbers (uf).
@@ChavezDIY i have the picture but nothing that i search on amazon is the same
@@arohashoyu what are your numbers? The voltage can be higher on the new one but the capacitance needs to match.
@@ChavezDIY mines says 50µF 250VAC 50/60HZ ±5% 40/70/21 B S2
@@arohashoyu Try this one amzn.to/3JtjgBu It's a 50uF capacitor, the voltage doesn't need to match exactly, you can have more voltage but not less. I searched amazon for "50uf round capacitor"
Mine just keeps beeping like it's full of water. But I empty it and it's still beeping. I've vacuumed all of the filters already too.
Man I just garbage my 4yrs old portable , me stupid
