      Chris are you sure the Terra Speed is not hookless compatible? I was under the impression that only the GP5000 TL was not compatible. Currently running a GK32 TLC /303S as my road mode. According to RR you only loose 2 watts by going to the Conti.

    I ride the same tires, they are really awesome. One drawdown for me as a heavy rider (220 lb) is, that they wear down so fast. The tire on the back has almost no knobs anymore in the middle, after just 620 miles.

    For the budget minded people the Giant Contend AR 1 is an excellent alternative. I just couldn't justify such an expensive bike. My aluminum bike with my hyper 50mm rims weights 8,4kg in road mode which I find astonishing. In gravel mode it weighs just about 9,5kg. Considering that I paid 1350€ for frame and groupset (sold the stock wheels to the store) it's a complete bargain.

      Thats what I did in december 2021.Was in search for a giant Revolt Advanced with in a Budget on 3500-3800 Euro max. But my bikeshop didn't have something in this range in stock. Also no bikes in sight up to july 22. Only a contend ar 1 in stock with 105 11speed. So I made this Deal with him. The bike without Stock tires for 1400euro. A Set of giant cxr2 carbon wheels with 37mm wtb Riddler, xt rotors and 11-36 sram cassette. Also the zipp 303s with cadex race 28mm tires, 11-32casette,xt rotors and a slightly used Praxis zayante carbon crank 48/32 from a showroombike.. Great Deal 👍. Much fun with both Setups. In summary only 3400 Euro spend for a great 2in 1 bike solution.

    This is the route I have taken and have replaced 3 bikes with one. I have a Boltcutter High Country that I run with 2x12. I have one set of road wheels that I run with 32c slicks and a set of gravel wheels that I run with 44c treads. I started running a 32c on the road just for comfort and utility and to make the road setup more of an all-road so I can handle rough roads or take a detour if I needed. Plus, as I get older my need (or ability) for speed is less, so I go for utility and making that bike a perfect all-arounder. I used to have 2 road bikes and a gravel bike and now this bike replaces them all. I went from 6 physical bikes to 3 with the capability of 5. I also have a steel Speedvagen Rugged Road that I set up 1x12 but with 35c slicks as my dedicated go anywhere bike without having to swap the wheels out. If I want to go a little faster on the road I'll swap out wheels but gone are my carbon race bikes that probably had me over-biked because face it I'm not that fast anymore, nor was I really that fast to begin with. Plus, I now have more room in the garage.

    Thanks Chris. Great video as usual. What tyre pressure are you running the conti’s out on the road?
    I will give this a try if I can get some.
    On my crux, road mode is some 303s with 30c Schwable and gravel mode is the new S works Pathfinders on 303FC. The Pathfinders are an excellent tyre, I have been very impressed. They are 42c but on the Zipp go up to 44mm wide so they are as comfy as anything, proving very durable, light at 420g and are very fast on the road.

    Great video. Very thoughtful. I have an Argon 18 Dark Matter that I am using for gravel, commuting, and occasional road rides (broken roads, winter road riding). I upgraded to Zipp 303s with the idea of seeing if I could do everything with GK 38s. That worked ok, but I am now experimenting with two wheels - the Zipps with WTB Expanse and HED Ardennes with Challenge Gravel Grinder 38s. Still too early to see if the two wheel set is worth the hassle. I will try the Terra Speeds at one point; seems like I may be able to do it all with them and just one wheel set.

    I've got a Specialized Roubaix on order which I'm intending to use for road and light gravel. However thanks to shipping delays I've been waiting nearly 3 months for it. I have a set of 40c Continental Terra Speeds for gravel and a set of 34c Vittoria Corsa N.EXTs for road. I still prefer an XC bike if I don't need to go on the road. Had the Corsas as the road tyres on my last gravel bike and they are superb.
    I've heard the Terra Speeds are an excellent tyre but they wear quickly if used on tarmac.

    I'm using the new Pathfinder 700x32 tires from specialized in my Roubaix, and it's a pretty good all-rounder. My first road bike had a 23c, then 25c and now I'm at 32s (because I can't fit a 35c).
    Not so comfy in loose gravel at descents, but for my use, mainly in crappy roads, it is probably the best choice. Slick center thread and low profile side knobs, not as heavy as 38s.

    My gravel bike that I ordered back in 2020 finally arrived this month, originally it was supposed to be my bike to try road, gravel and cross. In 2021 I bought 2 different road bikes though and have been riding road ever since. Ended up getting a Norco Search XR A1 which was a decent entry level bike as I was getting into cycling, now that I've gotten into racing a Crux or something would probably make more sense but going to ride the Search for a while anyway and maybe eventually use it as a winter training road/gravel bike. It came with non-tubeless Vittoria Terreno Drys, did my first ride on it this week on a mix of gravel and single track and racing it this weekend. Have a set of Tufo Thunderos on order. It looks like they are even faster than the Terra Speeds, I ordered the 40C version but they also come in a 36C, if you feel like trying another fast gravel tire would be cool to hear your comparison on the Terra Speed and Thundero as there isn't a lot of reviews of the Thundero out there. I did read a review that suggested the Terra Speeds were a bit "wallowy" on the asphalt, did you experience any of that? Also comparing the tread patterns felt the Thundero might be a longer lasting tire in rocky or hard pack terrain, it may pack up in sticky mud worse than the Terra Speed but not sure it would be any good in the mud either.

    • @DEXVD
      @DEXVD 2 роки тому

      @@outdoorbros_ Yeah I haven't tried the Terra Speeds myself yet but they were locally available. The main reasons I went with the Thundero instead was 1) the minimum psi for the Terra Speeds is higher than the recommended pressures I should run for conditions and body weight by the Silca tire pressure calculator. 2) In XC tires the Race King and Cross King are known to be a bit fragile, seeping sealant and losing lugs quickly, wondered if the Terra Speed durability may also be left if using a similar compound. 3) That review that suggested the Terra Speeds were a bit wallowy. Gran Fondo did a big group comparison but didn't feature the Thundero, they did suggest a few weaknesses though of the Terra Speed granfondo-cycling.com/continental-terra-speed-review/ couldn't find the review the described the wallowy thing but they did describe them as bobbing...

    I haven’t done much testing, but my theoretical physicycling indicates non-scientifically that the optimal do-it-all setup for me would be a Campagnolo Ekar equipped gravel bike with a 10-44 cassette and 42t chainring. Mind you, I’m not particularly fast nor do I contest sprints. Gravel wheels and 38mm Rene Herse slicks would be my choice but I’d be open to try other tires.
    In the real world, however, I would at least need two separare wheelsets. My local roads are fairly rough, but nothing a 32mm tire can’t handle. My trails are super bumpy and I often long for a 650b wheelset with 2.1 tires, which I still have on my wishlist.

    I didn't follow why you average less power on the Crux Vs the SL7 unless you just don't pedal as hard? Any losses (air resistance/rolling resistance etc) would be independent of your power.....

    • @onenotesolo256
      @onenotesolo256 2 роки тому +1

      I think he means having to put in less effort (pedal less hard) on the road bike with road tires to achieve the same stats for the ride (average speed etc). I.e. it’s more efficient. If I’m riding my Aspero on Gravelking 32s (which measure 35mm on the wheel) with a friend on a road bike running 25 or 28c tires, I like to see what wattage we’re both putting in to ride next to each other, and I’m usually having to produce 10-20W more to do the same speed, and will average a similar amount more over the whole ride for the same length or ride and average speed. Not very scientific but it’s fairly consistent.

    • @outdoorbros_
      @outdoorbros_  2 роки тому +2

      Maybe it didn’t come across properly in the video- I meant that my power would have been 15-20 watts lower on the tarmac to achieve the same time/distance result. The Tarmac is just a more efficient bike all around.

    • @outdoorbros_
      @outdoorbros_  2 роки тому +2

      Exactly, thank you. It’s not always a perfect science because you’re dealing with so many variables (tires, wheels, drivetrain, aero vs non-aero, different branded power meters, etc), but it’s my best estimate.

  • @andyc141
    @andyc141 2 роки тому +1

    Have you looked into the Rene Herse Bon Jon Pass Extralights (35mm)? I've really enjoyed them for road and the occasional gravel ride. Mine weigh in at 318 grams each tire.
    On the topic of efficiency, it's also worth pointing out you'll probably get slightly more aero drag on the wider tires and shallower rims...but I have no idea how many watts that translates to!

    • @outdoorbros_
      @outdoorbros_  2 роки тому

      I actually have a set of the Barlow Pass extra lights here and almost installed them instead of the Terra Speeds. Might do so in the future.

    • @drouleau
      @drouleau Рік тому

      @@outdoorbros_ I have the Barlow Pass tires as well, and the Terra Speed 35's.....the Barlows are fine on pavement, sand and flatter gravel roads in decent shape. Where they lack is on steeper/chunkier descents and off-camber stuff, as there's basically little to no traction. I recently did a gravel ride on the Barlows with a 7%, mile long downhill, and was crawling down it due to the lack of traction. Conversely, I also have a pair of Rene Herse Hurricane Ridge tires, and they would've handled that part MUCH better (but would have been overkill on pretty much everything else) - so like all things gravel bike, there's a trade off. I'm going to be using the Terra Speeds at the upcoming BWR SD, which I think will be perfect.....just wish I was in shape for it, already had to downgrade myself to the Wafer, and then came down with RS nearly 2 weeks ago and was off the bike for 11 days (still not fully recovered). Ugh.

    I don’t hear you address the issue of toe overlap and road bikes / gravel bikes. All good saying you can use road bikes on gravel but toe overlap can quickly give shatter the dream of one bike for both, unless your gravel is basically just hard pack or youre Tom Pidock level bike handler. So what’s the deal with crux vs diverge in terms of toe overlap. And the melee for that matter. Sure I could look at the geometry chart myself but where’s the fun in that.

    I'm still a two-wheel set kinda guy. There are advantages beyond the tires. I ran the first generation of these Conti tires tubeless and they were terrible... Leaking sealant from literally everywhere... I thought they were awesome the first few rides since I was using them in a similar format -- but, then it all went to hell. I had better success with the Terra Trail.

      @@outdoorbros_ I believe they have... There's the word "protection" in the tire's name now... Which was not the case when I bought them -- early adopter problem I suspect. You need to try the Rene Herse Steilacoom 38mm. Best all-rounder I've ever ridden. Crazy quiet and fast on pavement for its size and super gripy on the loose stuff. Give it a go!

    This is excellent and thought provoking content - thanks for sharing! My goal was a one wheel set up but found it too difficult to keep up during group ride (Diverge, Roval CLX 32, Pathfinder 42). I have since purchased a second wheel set for road (CLX 32, S-Works Turbo RapidAir) and made the first set "more knobby" with WTB Raddler 44 and 40. Basically, I did the opposite and tried to book end the set up for both terrain and weather. I do find it interesting non Specialized athletes like C Strickland and D Johnson running Pathfinder 42s. Also, Matt Beers coming in second at BWR on a Crux/Ruobaix tires is worth noting as mixed terrain and less knobs. As always - great vid. Tempted to try and go back to a middle ground tire set up. ua-cam.com/video/8eXRxkcl4eY/v-deo.html

      @@jeffreycohen8511 It's a perfect set up... if you don't want a road specific bike. However, you can easily go through half dozen reasons why a road specific bike is the proper route. Also, I bought the CLX 32 wheels from a Specialized employee who recommended the Turbo 28s for the CLX 32 (width).

    First, a s-works bike is not the same with a fact 9 carbon bike. My diverge is loads pounds heavier than yours even with the size 35 tires. So no comparison, like your s works is a fact 11 or 10 and is about 3 to 5 pounds lighter so you can use it as an all road bike. We’ll anyway, good talk n vid but for us gravel guys with the cheaper bikes, we’re primarily stuck with just the gravel tires on our bike. Btw, I own the panaracer 38 sk’s on my bike.
