Another way I cull fish with severe deformities is by feeding them to my convict cichlids but I only do this when the condition is really severe. this way the fish do not get wasted.

Yep that is a great way if you know the fish are healthy to pass the life on to another

I'm extremely interested in this topic... not just the cull selections, but the line breeding, and how that determines the culls, and what fish to breed, throughout each generation! I think It'd be awesome if you did a Livestream about it, so we could ask questions! 😃👍

    Awesome advice Peter
I too have really hard time to cull.
I usually let nature take its course however i do have a mutt tank just like you. Strangely enough i too toss cull type guppies and bettas in a large tank and surprised that they co exist. For me what i do with pure strains guppies is i try to separate females to give birth and keep trio original parents together. Babies are raised separately and sexed early so i can backcross to original father. This way i can 100% confirm which is the father. If the father dies i would select best son and use him to continue the line. Sons and daughters are raised separately so to ensure virgin pure stock.
The main issue with community guppy breeding is that the strain can easily reverse back to wild type in very short timeline. So it's crucial to keep breeding stock pure and also line breeding methods. The genetics we see today are a compilation of many dominant recessive and co-dominant genes expressed in phenotype however genotype also influenced the desired results.
So it's empirical to keep a rigid breeding system to ensure best outcomes. In community breeding if one chromosome is out of place eg like in dogs genetics you get different types of physical traits in color and body. It's basically a form of cloning. If the genetic sequence has an error in one of the stages that can change the results hence importance of line breeding rather colony. Funny thing is sometimes colony random breeding can have some awesome results but it takes years to try and make a unique trait stable and dominant.
When i younger i created crowntail guppies and top sword, dual sword and pin tail, dumbo guppies from one main ancestor by community breeding however i couldn't maintain the line as i didnt know much about proper breeding technique plus the internet wasn't around back them. Lol.
You have some Lovely guppies. 👍
    Best of luck with breeding.

Would you say the following is a decent reason to cull fry? Ie, will they get 'better' enough to live as non-breeders or no? 1. Swimming in circles more than once or twice after observation 2. Swimming sideways, bobbing oddly, diagonal swim and drift (I assume bladder issues) 3. Curved spine
this is what I've seen with my first breed ever. I had one with some kind of rupture that I put back in the mom tank and that fry was (naturally) eaten. I did the same for 1 obvious case of bent spine but now I'm wondering if that was right, since I'm not sure if bent spines can live decent lives. I have a few with minor bends but bad diagonal and odd swimming that I'm evaluating now.

Hi, thank you for the helpful video! I've only been breeding some mutt guppies for fun as I'm relatively new, and have been fairly lucky so far in that my LFS is happy to take young, and I've only had two deformed ones that lived to a good size, and both were male, so could go into my community tank which only has male guppies. My problem now is that I was given some Mickey mouse platies, which have been breeding in that community tank. Most of their young have been strong and pretty, and also gone to the LFS. But now I've been spotting some deformities, some pretty severe. I don't want any deformed ones to breed (or to suffer) and I don't think my LFS will be thrilled if I give them a bunch of deformed fry either. I really don't have the space or time for two more tanks, so facing having to cull these youngsters with clove oil. Will be gifting the adult platies to the LFS too, so I don't have this problem in the future. Will find space for another 15 gallon to keep as a retirement tank for any deformed female guppies that survive, and the deformed female platies.

    Tbh i breed guppies myself
Over the past few month i lost a lot of fish due to unclean filtration system
Now I'm left with around 200 fish
And I have both I don't think that a fish that looks like that is kind of a problem
If you care for it and treat it well it's gonna live her best life.

I would medicate for sure, either a Maracyn or general cure, guppies are very prone to internal parasites and it can be easily taken care of it it’s done quickly.
Keep me updated and hope this helps!

Pretty soon they all got bent spines or spontaneous develop them and stop eating. No cure. 1 year and 25 aquarium down the drain and hundreds of guppies euthanized over one stupid guppy coz people told me it was just inbreeding!!
