I was there for opening night!!!! How wonderful to find this! We also visited Cork and Dublin on our trip, as well as Belfast, so I had some clue as to the background of the play. I was with my husband when we went to see _Lieutenant_ so it wasn't really the thing to try to go screaming to see Aidan at the stage door. LOL I was just really happy to see him in person at all. He's lovely to look at in 3D! :) But really, I think his acting overshadowed his terrific looks. I've rarely seen someone so convincing in a role as he was in this. I would say more, except I don't want to give away any spoilers for those who go see it. There are huge shocks in this play. It is also incredibly funny! I suppose it shouldn't have surprised me that Aidan was so terrific, but I just don't think I've ever seen him show off so many aspects of his acting ability before, from his never flubbing a line, to his looking completely natural as he went through the role, which was very physical and not an easy part to play. His voice also carries to the back of the balcony without his seeming to yell. Plus, he had to use a Northern Irish accent, which is not his own. In fact, it sounds like none of these people had accents like they used in the play so they all had some work to do there. Of course, they'd probably heard it enough so it wasn't too difficult for them (the London audience got a lot of jokes I missed because I had some difficulty understanding some of the lines), but it was just one more aspect of the play that made it a challenge. They all did very well, and the audience certainly appreciated everything, too, having given the play a standing ovation at the end and Aidan loud cheers as he took his bow! And yes, I was one of those doing the cheering, too! BTW, as an American, I love hearing these black men speaking with an Irish accent. It's so cute! :) Did anyone else notice Aidan seems to have gotten his tattoo removed? That doesn't hurt my feelings.
When I watched the play last month, they had a digital board which showed the text of the play as they were saying it. It was intended to help the hard of hearing I think but it also helped to see what they were saying for those who found the accent a bit hard to understand at times when the speech was more rapid, and the odd Irish word used would be visible on that screen also.

You probably got a better view of Aidan Turner than I did. I was up high in the Grand Balcony and not at the front of that. From that distance you can't see people's features clearly but I enjoyed the acting of all the actors.
Were there two balconies? I was in the one above the orchestra (or stalls as they seem to call the lower floor). I didn't notice if there was one above me. I had my eyes trained on the stage. LOL I actually could see him pretty well as I was right in the middle. Seemed to me, since we saw five different shows in London theaters (and also went to Glyndebourne for the opera) that there are hardly any bad seats in any of the houses. They're not all that big that even in the back row of the top balcony you couldn't see. But I could be wrong. I did bring opera glasses, of course. :) I spent a good amount of time looking through those. LOL I thought all the actors did great, too. I heard Aidan was going to be in it just until the end of August. I wish I could see it again, but California is kind of far to go to see a play, even one with Aidan Turner. BTW, the next day we took the train to Falmouth in Cornwall and the day after that took a _Poldark_ tour with one guide for the four of us (we met friends from the UK there, all of us fans of the show) and went all over the place to see locations where they shot various scenes. It was a really great trip, all told. BTW, did you get to see any other plays? Besides _Les Mis_ and _Phantom,_ we also saw _The Play that Goes Wrong,_ and I thought I would literally die laughing-if the actors didn't get killed first. ROFL That play was freaking dangerous!!!! I hope you got to see it or still can if you live close enough. We also saw _Witness for the Prosecution_ by Agatha Christie, and it was performed right in an old courtroom in London. Well done! :) One of these days I'd like to go back. Maybe in a couple of years.

I would have preferred something closer, of course, but by the time I even knew tickets were available, it was almost all sold out. So I considered myself lucky. I had even signed up to have notices of the London theater productions emailed to me, but somehow _Lieutenant_ never was. Then I just decided to look for myself and found the website for the Noel Coward Theater. I actually changed the date of the cruise we took of the British Isles so we could be there for his play. It all worked out very well, I thought. :) BTW, I love Noel Coward. My family and friends used to get together and read his plays for fun when I was growing up. I got to see Alan Rickman play the role of Elliot in _Private Lives_ in New York in 2002 and other local productions of _Hay Fever._ It was a thrill to be in the theater named for him, and that just added to the experience. BTW, I don't see your post about your balcony, but it showed up in my notices. Go figure.
