I've not seen anyone do quarter sawing with so little waste and still made it look so easy. I went to school in Memphis to become a lumber grader. I have seen many butchered logs by sawers who thought they knew what they were doing but destroyed countless logs and wasted $1000.00s. You have clearly done this before. Grate job and excellent demo.
There's a lot of vids on the puter saying they are quarter sawing a log the right way, I've even had a few arguments with them on what is the "right" way, but their "way" turned out a lot of rift sawn that they called quarter sawn. You have shown the RIGHT WAY in this vid! It's the way I do it on my sawmill too. Thanks for posting the right way! SR
Thank you thank you. That’s the first demonstration of quarter sawing so that I could understand it. I’m not a sawyer guy but I think I really understand. The way you do it just makes sense.
I've been waiting for some circle mill to show a great quarter sawing video and this is it. I remember Mr. McCoy made a quarter sawing video years ago and he did it all with his log turner machine (maybe a little help from Mother) but I have never been able to find that video again.
That was frreakin awesome...no bs...about end fer ending the quarter...best quarter saw video ever...you boys are the absolute best... can't wait toll snows gone here in BC...gonna try it...👍
Howdy, from Ark. I ran a band mill for several yrs after I retired. Had a load of fun ,cut mainly for my own woodshop. This is the first time I have really understood the quartersaw process. So far all the other folks made it so complicated sounding my old brain couldn't grasp it. Had to sell my saw a while back due to ageing, this makes me wish I had another one. Not to be,too old Keep up the good work .🤠
Merry Christmas. I watch a few log cutting UA-camrs but I think this is the first time I seen properly milled Quarter Sawn & it looks easier to do it properly than all the log flip flopping & complicated explanations of other "so called" expert Sawyers.
Excellent and timely video, as I'm about to dump 5 big spruce and they deserve to be quarter sawn! Thanks to you and your crew, and have a Merry Christmas!!
I love watching your videos of Sawmilling, as I also have a UA-cam Channel of art, with lots of mistakes as my channel is about 3 months, since I started. I am learning from you as well as other channels. Thanks for Your Help. Happy New Year!
Good job on true quater sawing logs . None of my business but why don’t you have a inbound log deck and log turner . Sawmill sales are going really cheap right now .
Happy Holidays to you all. Great video. All my questions are answered. My question to you is do you ever treat the end grain with a sealer as the lumber dries. Especially on that top quality quarter sawn?
Merry Christmas to all of you first of all, but the question that I have is, is there a definitive or standardized set of guidelines established for quarter sawing, or is done by personal preference from past experience?
Andruw, nice and clear log you had on the mill. Your method of 1/4 sawing this log yielded 24 boards of different widths, however, each of those boards you had to square the inside edge. Therefore, if your boards were one inch thick then you wasted a 12 inch wide board. Figure: each board is 1 inch thick and at a 45 degree edge, so 2 boards makes a 1 x 1, and 24 divide by 2 is 12, obviously. In my opinion a horizontal band sawmill or a swing-blade sawmill do better in 1/4 sawing. With the horizontal band sawmill, you would set all 4 quarters on the bed and cut your lumber from the bottom. Then rotating 90 degrees for each cut. For the size of your log, it would be a total of 6 cuts, because each cut you would be cutting 4 boards 🙂
@@Rose-f2t I have made this exact comment. I was hoping for better results, but this method was only better by having to only flip each quarter once. The response he gave you was the lamest I've heard in a long time! If they're wanting quarter sawn, it's not for the bad set marks off the saw!
@@tomnovak7731 I agree with the lame answer. He can do a better job by setting the quartered log flat on the bed and make a cut, then rotate the log 90 degrees check for parallelism with the saw and make another cut, and so on. But that was too much work, I suppose 🙂
Dang cool video! Yeah I've watched several guys 1/4 saw and surely they didn't know how to do it the best way. They say the band mill is better but ya'll did it just as dang simple as you could hope for. I'm really hoping to bring my saw to you guys this week. I'll give ya a call a day before to be sure it's ok. Merry Christmas!
This is the only way you CAN really do it on a circular mill without flipping the quarters. On a horizontal band mill you can set your blade the desired thickness off the deck and make cuts on alternating faces with better results.
Great video! Do you quarter the log based on the geometry of a log itself or that of a heartwood - in case it is not positioned right in the center of a log?
AFTER MANY CHANNELS, EVEN ''THE HIGH VIEWER COUNT'' CHANNELS, I HAVE NEVER, ('TILL THIS DAY), WITNESSED 1/4 SAW. THANK YOU KINDLY, MUCH OBLIGED!!! . Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
I've not seen that method of quarter sawing on a circle mills. Usually circle mills don't bother with quarter sawing as it is a lot harder to do than with other sawmills. I always thought quarter sawn lumber is any lumber which the growth rings are perpendicular to the wide face of the board. There is more than one way to saw boards to produce that. It's just that some methods are easier than others and some produce more quarter sawn lumber. Merry Christmas to you and your sawing crew.
@bwillan I think he got as much rift sawn as the next guy. There were only about 3, maybe 4, boards per quarter that were truly quarter sawn. I was hoping for something more with the video title, but it was less impressive than some I've seen. It was simpler, but not more effective.
@@tomnovak7731 The point is the term "quarter sawn" refers to cutting a log into quarters, then slicing it up. there may be better ways to get cross grain boards, but they aren't quarter sawn. Just like plain cut logs aren't cathedral sawn.
Merry Christmas! Awsome video... 1/4 sawing the easy way. I was always told you had to swit h the log end to end. Clearly not needed when you know what you are doing.
G'day, Andruw's, merry Christmas to you also. It's nice to hear saw millers referring to the look of the cut face as figure and the grain orientation as structure when so many get it wrong referring to figure as grain 👍.
Not seen anybody quarter saw red oak before. Also we replaced some flooring 10 years ago and we wanted quarter sawn red oak and could not find any so we used white oak.

it looks really good this way but if you want 12'' wide boards that method wouldn't work unless you have very big logs, would it?

Merry Christmas to all of you first of all, but the question that I have is, is there a definitive or standardized set of guidelines established for quarter sawing, or is done by personal preference from past experience?
Thanks for watching merry Christmas. There is a set of guidelines to quarter sawing. Dad learned these when he was in college for sawmilling.
Andruw, nice and clear log you had on the mill.
Your method of 1/4 sawing this log yielded 24 boards of different widths, however, each of those boards you had to square the inside edge. Therefore, if your boards were one inch thick then you wasted a 12 inch wide board.

A band mill would help. But. This order in particular wanted the circle mark that a band mill cannot provide.
