Literally, and on multiple levels - the characters were literally being kept against their will (one of them didn't even sign. Someone else "signed on her behalf." Meaning no consent). And the players were being held hostage with emotional blackmail. So a hostage situation on multiple levels.

Lord Fuzzle So you'd think, but I think the DM and the inventor of the SUE system is even worse: irolledazero.blogspot.com/p/properly-ordered-posts.html
For some random highlights, the players are given a mission briefing consisting of ten minutes about how useless they and their mission is before sending them out without even teaching them how to use their weapons. A wizard that telepathically sees the players plan and instantly destroys their secret weapon as soon as they think about it. A group of futuristic high-tech engineers unable to do anything because in the future knowledge of things like hot air balloons has been delegated to computers. And as a cherry on top, the only characters that matter are a trenchcoat-wearing, katana wielding DMNPC, and DM's literal self-insert as the most powerful being of the multiverse.
Oh, and the DM himself is literally the definition of highest possible intelligence. As in, if your intelligence is less than 20 you're unable to do the things he can, and if he doesn't know something, literally no one can. Not the DMNPC but the DM himself - if he doesn't know how to do something, no one in his game can either.

The other players left her there because she pissed them all off and she had to escape on her own. Sounds bad but they were laughing their way through the game. She managed to break out and catch up with the others and demanded why they left her there. She couldn't even keep a straight face for the role play because the reasoning was too funny "Because you scare us.". In all fairness her character was pretty scary.

One thing we do if a campaign isn't going well is to cut our losses and run with the next being affected with the outcome the antagonist was seeking but with mitigated results. Any ideas that seem promising get recycled into another. The player that got her character arrested was trying to hide a drug stash in the players' base and they willingly moved it out and framed her. The world ends up screwed more than once because of them but they survive. That Skyrim video playing in the background is the kind of thing their characters THINK they can do but as soon as the spider shows up, they nope back down the mountain. That depends on the DM. It's valid for even a nat 20 to not be able to stop it. Nat 20's may automatically succeed the check but that doesn't mean the check ever had a chance of stopping the mindreading (though a good DM should at least make it have some tangiable effect otherwise it just feels shitty for the player). And of course it's always valid for a DM to rule that you don't get a saving throw, but again, doing it arbitrarily is going to feel bad for the players.

You get to read surface thoughts, beyond that REQUIRES a save, however, as Dm, you are allowed, and actually, forced, into producing homebrew. Homebrew, of course, is anything not within the official books, and dnd, dm, by definition, is someone who interprets the books his own way, using them as tools, and bending the worlds rules to fit his narrative. Dms are 100% allowed to homebrew and make shit up as they please. That said, give a reason.
I would say that, if you're not allowing a save, then either theres something about the air ship that enhances psychic powers greatly, like Cerebro from X-Men, or , it casts enfeeble mind as an aura, reducing everyones mental capacity unless they are resistant/immune to psychic, giving them either disadvantage on saves or no save. Or, simply announce your dmpc took a feat that allowed that specific spell to have no save. Granted, if you're doing this, allow the players the same option. IE, if you created feats, the players are allowed access to the same feat pool. Do whatever you want as dm, but be fair about it. Theres a lot of ways he could explained away this, but he didnt because he doesnt have empathy, he is not capable of seeing from their point of view, this is because of his mental illness no doubt, he is literally, autistic.

The setting where the gods’ very nature, and even existence, is deliberately kept very ambiguous by the author. That alone makes me think the DM never knew the lore he was demanding the players look up themselves, himself.

When I have a DMPC in the party, they "Are not sure what to do, but will support you in combat." I try very hard to have them do simple roles, like tanking an enemy, or sitting in the back and tossing out heals and buffing. If a creature gets low on HP, and I think the next attack(s) will kill it, I intentionally don't get the last hit on it, so the players can get that bit of glory. The reason I have a DMPC is because we have Co-DMs, and when the party crosses certain lines in the world map, the DM changes. Then I will start playing the now PC as a normal player would. But when the party goes back to my DM area, the characters switches back to the passive attitude.

I think the author of this nightmare scenario had the right idea. It just took them about a year to follow through and end things...
Try a one on one with your DM. Feedback is important, positive or negative. It's up to the DM on how they take your criticism. If they flat out ignore your pleas, then individually ask your fellow party members how they feel. This will help a lot in validating your concerns and prevent mob mentality if your reasoning is logical.
I recommend not ganging up on the DM all together as that can create hostilities almost immediately. Be respectful, because they're still a human being and probably don't want to feel attacked by the people they've been hanging out with.
If you're not having fun, then you should not feel obligated to stay.
Fun is why you signed up. And if the DM remains stubborn, bail. The other players can see your example and hopefully have the courage to do the same. Maybe that will finally be enough to open a stubborn DM's eyes.
No D&D is better than bad D&D. (If only I could give this advice to myself 6 years ago.)
      Or start your own campaign.
      With Blackjack.
      And hookers.

But in all seriousness, it's a good rule of thumb to sit with your players before they even make their characters and ask what they expect out of the game. Some players love combat and avoid RP. Some thrive in RP and have that reflect in their combat.
My number 1 favorite thing about D&D: World-building is just as much a player's right, as it is a DM's.
If someone says their character lived on an island, I have them tell me everything they can about it. Are there other islands? Do people also live there? Are they all at peace with each other? The players now feel part of this world that you helped them build.
D&D can be a beautiful experience. Some DM's feel they need to wield all this power. But at the end of the day, it's just a game. Let people have fun.

Yes, they do want to play as characters in D&D, but that doesn't mean it has to be *your* campaign they play in. They could be doing literally anything with their time, it's on the DM to make players want to spend time in their world. Second, yes. They *should* want to save the world. And yet, they don't. Sure, we have met some super powerful NPCs (one was working for the god of death and essentially saved us by nuking a town of undead we couldn't hope to kill) but it's usually up to the party to either ask them for help, hope they accept, then get the hell out of the way or else get whomped by them too. This isn't the behavior of someone "on the spectrum." This is the behavior of a man-child who manipulates his friends into doing what he wants when he wants and pitches a drunken temper tantrum when he doesn't get his way, then blames everything on his "mental illness." I'm glad that group told him off and got away from him. Speaking from experience, if someone's being an outright dick to you and your friends and it pisses you off, set your desire for a better outcome aside, throw your soft feelings for that person into a safe, lock it, and throw away the key. The minute something like this begins to physically affect you, it's time you put your own feelings and well-being above your supposed friend.
Also, the guy OP drunkenly ranted to is a TRUE friend the hero of this story. He, literally, saved her and her friends. So good on him. He's definitely a keeper.

Also, it doesn't sound to me like a man-child, so much as it sounds like a severely mal-adapted aspie who never got the childhood support necessary to have even a small semblance of emotional maturity. It's a subtle difference, but, in my mind at least, "man-child" sort of downplays the severity of the narcissism and machiavellianism that's going on.

The schizophrenia doesn't cause problems, as the understanding of mental health has improved massively from where it had been, and it is properly treated and well under control.

This! I have a mild form of Asbergers and ADD, today diagnosed as ADHD, and I would never accept someone using their diagnosis to excuse repeat abuse and manipulative behaviour akin to what that DM did subject his players. Sure, at times it is difficult to not point at my double diagnosis to explain why I have issues in social situations, which do affect my job performance at times, such as not understanding non-verbal cues or interrupting someone trying to explain how to do a specific task or refusing to ask for help since I wish to not be a burden. What this DM did falls beyond what is acceptable to be excused by the motivation that he is suffering from mental and developmental issues.
In a case like this, I'd argue that the best course of action is to show the DM how it is done by simply forcing a change in whos DM and campaign down his throat. Tell him explicitly that he won't be doing and DMing before he has been playing a character and paid attention to how DMing is done, only then one should give him a chance to DM. If he fails by being a manipulative and uncaring asshole then a secondary break in his DMing is enforced, repeat the requirements for him to DM in the future, later allow him to DM again - repeat a reasonable amount of times until he improves or ban him for life to DM ever again. If he throws a tantrum then threaten to walk out on him. Easy peasy.

This guy was granted a very extreme case with the DMPCs, but you see a lot of DMs that just want to put the PCs on rails and get very uncomfortable if they try to step outside the bounds of his plan of how he thinks the plot should go.

Gunna get buried but god I hate my story
So not exactly tabletop game but me and a few online friends joined a discord server. I Roleplay a LOT in my free time so when I noticed this server (which normally just did a lot of talking and fanart) had a Roleplay section, I was all in. I had two interested in the beginning, dubbed H and N, and they were great. They took suggestions and were happy to flesh out these awesome characters. They got really good at it when some other people joined. I was chill with them because they were very eager to learn as well. I stepped back because at this point they could learn from the three of us interacting pretty easily.
That out of the way one day I decide to start a new Rp. This one set in a sort of magical/old west time. The plot is we all live in the same town were people are going missing. All our characters team up to solve the disappearances. My character is a tall buff teddy bear who loves hugs. The two ogs play a friendly slender caring girl and a short pile of social awkwardness. I can’t quite remember the others (they were only able to Rp some of the time) but god was it fun. They restarted a few times to fix things, but the banter and interaction was worth it.
Enter the server owner. She was happy we had begun using the Rp section and asked to join. We had restarted awhile ago and decided sure, why not. Then she took hold of the Roleplay and ran with it.
The Roleplay thus far had been driven by whatever we came up with. Thing taking people went from cult, to magic, to shadow dragon. But now that she was here? Demon. It was a demon. She played I think 5 or 6 characters for this, and they were overpowered as HELL. It pissed me off to oblivion and back. I eventually got tired of it and messaged one of the ogs about it. H responds relieved and says it’s pissed her off since the start. Well as this continues Server Owner decides this Rp is a branch off a book she’s written (not kidding) and this demon was from it.
(She literally said one of her characters wrote a book someone else was holding on demons)
So as this wears on my character has a panic attack as she finds out her older sister has disappeared. I’ve made this character very emotional unstable, flying from punching a log of wood and breaking her hand to swimming and laughing (with the ogs of course) And What does Server Owner do? She uses one of her characters powers to instantly stop the panic attack.
    What.
    The.
    Hell.
My plan was for H (who had requested healing power, which I was all for because she played the weaknesses and strengths SO well) to put MC to sleep. I decided to have her pass out anyway, because screw you SO, and N carried her to the couch to sleep it off. SO’s overpowered fricks then plan how to take down the demon, never consulting anyone else, when I decided. Screw this, we’re doin things my way.
My character begins shifting in her sleep, quiet mutterings turning into cries of fear.( I speedtyped most of this) And before SO’s fricks can do anything, she bolts upright and disappears out the front door. (Don’t reveal where she’s headed so the fricks don’t suddenly get the power of teleportation) Smoke curls around them as they round a corner to see her launch into her families burning home. Again, before SO does anything, she reappears carrying her youngest sibling. Her mother takes the little kid and MC sways a bit before she hits the deck. She’s got burns galore, as do a lot of her family. H works on MC while one of the fricks proceeds to insta heal the rest of my family. (Healer og actually fought for that one, telling the frick to heal other people instead of two healers in one person) When MC comes to, she’s immediately engulfed in a hug by her mom.
And here’s where I got royally dicked.
The mother tearfully tells MC that the one who burned down their home was none other than...
Her older sister. I had dropped hints EVERYWHERE and I was so happy to see my friends in shock.
But guess who wasn’t happy with that?
SO. Who dicked my whole reveal with this
“The demon was here to, it must have done it. Not her”
I lost it. I stopped trying. I started going with whatever she said after that. Then my healer friend finally told SO what was up. SO blatantly denied that her characters were overpowered. She tried to show us all their faults.
(Only fault I saw in one wasn’t her fear of hurting the other fricks SO, it was the fact she knew necromancy yet had an artifact of life.)
Then SHE got pissed. Shouting that “MC IS EVERYTHING I WILL NEVER BE” and shit like that. Well screw me sideways with a chainsaw. These fricks were literally a fanfic for a fan fiction writers life. She got so pissed she refused to listen to a damn word. I wrote a (surprisingly) calm paragraph to her about how she needs to make one character just for Roleplay if she wasn’t going to change her old ones. She agreed (surprisingly) and then said something about her family or something. I haven’t talked to her about it since but I thing she still doesn’t realize how upset she made everyone. I know from now on whatever Rp she joins it will be extremely tense.
I still haven’t revisited that setting or plot because of the fricken Roleplay ptsd.

I really love how you actually had to stop halfway through to process the massive cringe on the orgy part, and then talked yourself into continuing on. Thanks for the effort. Much appreciated

My brother is on the spectrum and DMs wonderfully. He has a hard time expressing his feelings and being able to tell a story and get feedback immediately through D&D just brightens up his day. He has never really had friends until D&D and he has made many, all whom are sweet people and absolutely cherish my brother. It makes me really happy that he has a game that he loves and other people love him, and they don't judge him for stuttering sometimes or not freaking out when he told them that he had autism. And they didn't make fun of him. I love D&D and so does my brother, and he has never used his autism as an excuse to be a prick.

DM says he's very familiar with the setting
Setting is Eberron, where Divine Magic comes from faith, not a direct tie to the gods, because the gods are so aloof and distant that even celestials (such as angels) don't actually *know* that they are real.
DM has an ACTUAL GOD descend during the campaign.
DM also gets mad at players for not knowing enough about the setting.
This detail alone annoys me alot. I almost missed it though, since it came shortly after the "regular orgies" bit

All I know is that the background video game is super distracting. I'm really enjoying the stories, but the background video games are so distracting that I have to keep rewinding to find out what was just said.

As an avid Eberron DM, hearing him say that the Cleric's god appeared to talk to them directly made me physically recoil. I literally had to get up and take a break
