A look at the Tektronix 5 Series at the Electronex stand. This is NOT a review, it's just Dave bumbling around. Also the sexy new Rohde & Schwarz RTP series scope
Oh, good lord Dave, complaining about the weight of a modern scope? Please. We used to haul a Tectronix 545a beast up and down ladders in submarines back in the day. 70 pounds in one hand to make it up or down the ladder and through the hatches. I would have given my left nut for that 5 series.
well.. nearly. The waveforms still stop when you're interacting with the UI and look how slow it gets when he turns on "dot" mode (which for some reason is + shapes, not dots). Still should be better for this high end model.
That’s a 29 pin “HDMI” connector that was developed for future higher bandwidth HDMI applications. R&S has repurposed it for there logic analyzer probes.
I use the MSO54 every day. 4 channel model. A couple of my friends at the office have the 8ch models. These are LEGIT scopes. Dave, I’ve learned a lot from watching your videos, and for this I am grateful. But good lord, your nitpicking is unreal. By the way.... “don’t turn it on, take it apart!”
It has some unique properties. In particular, it can decode and trigger(!) on Ethernet, which is a unusual feature. Six channels allows monitoring of two Ethernet ports and two additional signals. Wish it had even more advanced or customizable Ethernet frame decoding, and more advanced math/measurements based on the Ethernet trigger time. But still, it is one of the best scopes for Ethernet measurements at the moment.
The Original Battlestar Galactica used Tektronics equipment in the series for all the neat looking electronics on the ship. And i scored two Tektronics 50 ohm 2 watt bnc terminators at good will for 99 cents!
Nice that it has a USB 3 port. I wonder if it could do video capture and dump it out to a flash drive. The full HD resolution of the screen opens up a whole host of possibilities.
Not that I've had a chance to try it, but a 5 Series with the Windows option would allow you to install any kind of capture software you want. I might actually have to give that a try...
On the TEK site it is listed starting at (350 MHz - 2 GHz) 6.25 GS/s - $13.3k (4 Chan), $16.6k (6 Chan), and $23.3k (8 Chan) base price and I assume it only goes up depending on how it is configured.
James B Those prices are also non-inclusive of options (either software options like protocol support or bus analysis/decode, or the optional Windows OS option), which get pretty steep pretty quick. A well-equipped 8-channel, 2GHz model with 3 or 4 bus options and the Windows option can easily approach $50k.
17:55 It's not jitter, it's not multiple samples. It's showing each dot as a cross (+) and look how slow the scope gets when displaying it. total fail.
KX36 It still seems to respond to the controls. Some of the Rigol models are diabolically slow, if you really want a challenge. Surely a way around the issue of multiple sub-systems accessing the sample memory would be to duplicate the samples. Allow for routinely creating two copies (or more, perhaps) to allow for faster processing, then have the option to double the sample depth by sacrificing responsiveness.
Tek didn't send one for review to prevent this type of critical review, but he still managed to critically review it "remotely" hahahah! Tek! Tek! its obvious you guys didn't send Dave one deliberately.
If you keep your hands clean, the modern world has proven that fingerprints are not a huge issue and if you can afford that scope, you can also afford a microfiber towel.
Some people actually prefer the touchscreen. Fortunately it also supports a keyboard and mouse so you can do just about everything that way if you prefer.
I bet that salesman was glad to see the rear of Dave.
Hahaha he got a run for his money didn't he?

I can only imagine what a well equipped 5000 Series cost. Can you give me a hint?
Hello from Buffalo!
Roy
.... up hill, both ways
OMG! I still got one of those 545's in my attic. It weighs a ton! ^____^
Damn, the Tek 545 looks like it weighs more than a car haha
Looks like an absolute work of art on the inside too.
Finally, a Tek that has a responsive UI.

R&S digital connector is same as on the RTM - yes, like a wider HDMI. Cables are made by Samtec, so connector probably also Samtec.

Ah, interesting. Anything else using it?
I like that blue plastic colour and the button backlights look good and not too dazzling.

beautiful scope
I died internally when he didnt relock the connector

@@xStip What do you mean?
I'd love to have a scope that's fairly fast with digital logic inputs. At the moment I'm mainly interested in viewing USB and LVDS display signals.
Easy to assemble, good strong materials, feels good, looks good.
I'll take two.
You get a free wheelbarrow with two!
Great!

Nice big screen!
Some people just don't work with touch screens...
After that review the Tektronix shares have plummeted on the stockmarket :p
Cool!
I know if I have to ask the price I can't afford it but I'll ask anyway. What was the price range for the Tek and the R&S?
On the TEK site it is listed starting at (350 MHz - 2 GHz) 6.25 GS/s - $13.3k (4 Chan), $16.6k (6 Chan), and $23.3k (8 Chan) base price and I assume it only goes up depending on how it is configured.

@@Damaniel3 Not for the home hobbyist to be sure!
Hehe, using one of these from two months or more :D imagine that it had whole design team even only for its legs :P
I could only dream...... I would love something more modern than my two TDS3032s....
I prefer horizontal section at the bottom and Vertical at top. make sense
N. Amin Rohimi Especially if making the jump from analog scopes with 4‘ screens and each horizontal section next to each BNC.
Does it work with a mouse ? I hate smearing my dirty fingers across the screen :(
Yes - full mouse and keyboard support for people who don't want to work with the touchscreen.
Licensing? Don't like that word for that price but at least they specify it and do free trials.
Notice Dave didnt get that scope to review He kinda screwed that on his 4 series review.
try to lift a Tektronix TLA like that :p. RTP has a intensity knob ;)
18:32 that's not jitter. each point is a little crosshair symbol...
MetalPhreakAU
Yes. That is a good idea, too. (I assume that it can be turned off, if you want your dots to be more difficult to spot.)

Let him have his gripes. Unlike a lot of the commenters he will actually pony up and drop big money on a good scope that will see regular use.

Interesting live review 👍😀
Am I the only one that thinks that the touch and hold then drag to the trash can functionality sucks? Just press a clear button already.
Dave is NEVER satisfied, LOL!
62.5 MSamples and 62.5 USD millions ))
If this is at home, I have roots in my feet and I can not leave the AVC room. www
Glad they got rid of that silly trashcan thing. Whoever thought that was a good idea should have been fired 😂
Touchscreen at scopes. 👎
Do they also provide a cleaning cloth? Hurray for nasty fingerprints.

@@Peter_S_ with some people it doesn't matter how clean you keep yourself, some people have very oily skin, like myself. It's really annoying.
Knobs don't work terribly well for 8 channel scopes.
