The Air Force Commander wants to, 27 or 28 units, €5,5B during 20 years, to replace our MLU F-16. But that's for now his wishful thinking, the Parliament (Legislative Power) and the Government (Executive Power) are the only entities which may approve alteration to our Law of Military Programming and then execute it. Until this day no alterations were made by the Parliament to such Law, so the Government can't say it has permission to eventually buy those fighters. People only read headlines and really don't understand that the idea comes from the head of staff of the Air Force who can't really decide much regarding acquisitions, that's up to both the Portuguese Parliament and Government to legislate and execute. We're a democracy with a civilian frame of different powers which are independent (judicial, parliament - legislative, government - executive, and the Republic President - we're semi-presidentialists - which takes part as as referee between the legislative and executive powers and he's also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces), not a military based state. It's obvious that all governments listen to their military in the procurement of equipment, tests, price/value, etc but we many times in such issues use the Nato procurement agency, as we did when we replaced in the army the HK G3 by Scar L complemented by Scar H/HPR - again, the army was pressing for the acquisition of German HK-416 complemented by 417 and they didn't get them because it's not their place to decide where to spend the citizens taxes. Still no one in the Parliament has even mentioned the alteration of the LMP (LPM in Portuguese) to accommodate verbs to such jet fighter, the mentioned F-35A, not can the government opened it's "mouth" to stress the issue for the moment - as they cannot proceed buying such value of military equipment without the green light from the Parliament. Again is just a screen smoke, at least for now, words with no real consequences to the acquisitions by a Chief of Staff trying to do it's best to pressure and try to influence the Sovereign Organs which may decide to buy the F-35 or not - for the moment it's just a PR stunt from that Chief of Staff (which is irresponsible as he's putting the Parliament and the Government in check when he lacks decision power - in a real country, this kind of act and inappropriate conduct, no matter if for the best reasons, but undermining the authority of the rightful decision makers should have cost him his post as Chief of Staff of our Air Force and other inquiries would have already have been on his way).

@@williamguarrin8399 Well, they haven't had a major direct border threat since like the beginning of the 19th century. The doctrine of action abroad is geared towards being a complementary force to NATO. Portugal's interests abroad also don't run up against another major power. There should probably be programs aimed at increasing contingents and military equipment (they have acquired the KC-390 to replace legacy C-130s and are interested in the F-35A to replace the F-16AM/BM), but in the grand scheme of things, they don't need a very large force like the Ukrainians need.
@@williamguarrin8399in proportions to what? Do you even know the extent to what we are involved ? And how we perform? Now of course there isn’t no one that thinks we dont need more. But what are you even thinking that we do? There are certain things we can’t do. And then there are other things we can do very well, and we aren’t just professional by its basic definition, we are very professional at it. Some say the best. Wouldn’t think it would be coincidence that we train many times, armed forces and police forces from other countries. And historically we always thrived in lower numbers and equipment. So things don’t really translate the way you think. Also being better equipped doesn’t do much when you lose your shiny toy and then have no idea or experience on what to do without it. We compensate what we lack in numbers and equipment with experience. A lot of it. And specially our SFs are on par with the best of the world
