Studying multiple languages keeps me motivated. I do focus on one language for 3 months, so I get to do all 4 of my languages each year. It's awesome to travel and overhear languages you can understand, even if it's just a word:) Question: you do ONLY the focus language for the 3 months, except duolingo? I think that may be the issue. In my experience to have significant improvement up until fuency, the languages need to become a spontaneous part of your life. @@LanguageMaus Yes, so when I watch TV/ movies etc., I'm sticking with one theme (language). From a neuroplasticity perspective, too, I feel that listening to one language helps train the brain better.
@@LanguageMaus P.S. October starts 4th quarter, so it's a good time to try this. ;) I'll take into consideration the time of year... Will probably do Japanese after that since I'm on the Terrace House season that's set in the winter. But sometimes I change plans due to travel plans, too.
To be clear, this isn't what I was talking about in the video. You've been learning 4 languages over 4 years. That's not the same thing as I was saying. But also, "ADHD" is not a model and variant of car. Like, "Oh, this technique works well with ADHD..." I know, because I am also diagnosed with ADHD and so are both my kids (ok the youngest one isn't yet but he will be haha). I'm starting to believe that the term ADHD is about as useful as "male" and "female" when it comes to working out how people will behave.
@daysandwords I believe there is some research out there that suggests there are some strategies that are more suited to people with ADHD because they give more frequent dopamine hits. Im going from memory but languagejones has a video on this from a few months back.
Excellent advice for programmers is to make sure to download all the dictionaries and upload them into your local database. The best way programmers learn a language is to spend all their time writing a bunch of SQL queries to find interesting connections in the target language.
Loved this video! So funny! Definitely need more content like this online. I'm going to take your advice and study some Italian now, want to see how much i can improve before the end of the year.
I came to UA-cam today to watch something in Malay, but I saw that there was this fascinating video and thought to myself, "Ooh, I'd better not make any of these mistakes, I'll find out what they are first." Very interesting stuff. Anyway, now it's time for bed.
Swedish was the first foriegn language i tried to learn, i did everything wrong and hated studying it so i rarely did. After 2 years of "studying" this language, i am not nearly as far as i should be. I honestly think I am still A2 😒. And i'm so embarrassed by this. I wanted to see how much of a language I could learn if i did it the "right way". Studying everyday, both actively and passively. This idea came to mind when I was bored one saturday night and scrolling through Mango Languages, I saw Polish and thought: I should study swedish... then proceeded to click on Polish. Now that i know the right way i'm actually having fun with Polish. I found tv shows to watch in Polish that are interesting and the Mango course isnt that bad. I think I needed a break from Swedish to prove to myself that hey, U CAN learn another language. We'll see if I continue with Polish after these 60 days, it's for fun right now. 🤷🏼♀️
@@bookswmadi Yeah I've never been very motivated to learn Spanish, but somehow adding languages that I WANT to learn gets me on a roll and makes me more motivated for Spanish.
I have to learn Spanish because it’s my husband’s first language and all his family still live in Mexico and we plan on retiring there someday. Plus I live in California. I NEED to learn Spanish. And I DO really want to learn it. Just knowing the amount I do now is so fun to use and my husband seeing my improvement and it making him happy and excited is even more motivation. However I’ve always wanted to speak and know Arabic and was toying with the idea of learning that as well but as it is so drastically different from both Spanish and English, your video makes me think it’s a sign that I should not lol. As someone on the spectrum sometimes I’m not sure how to unwrap sarcasm. I know I’m taking things literally but not really sure where to go from there. Also I hope you get a percent of the Shark VPN because that seems like a win win for me getting it.

This could have been a crutch or excuse Satisfaction is listening to content meant for adults and understanding it. BRONZE: I need to pay more attention to my mistakes and then work on them to stop making them. Learn they phrases! Go Bo Sox!
Hej, jag är från Sverige. Tycker att du pratar mycket bra svenska. Kanske med lite mycket Stockholms dialekt. Men helt okej. Glad att det finns fler av oss, som gillar språk. På ditt språk: Hi, I'm Swedish. Think you speak very good Swedish, maybe with a little bit much Stockholm dialect. However totalt okay. Glad/happy there are more of us who likes languages. You are good att this! My grannie born 1902, went to French courses until she was over 80. She tolld us, just speak, it does not matter if it is perfect in another language. Yoiu Will be understod. And it is true. Have some Knowlege in Spanish, French and German. But not fluent, but it works. So, just try!
The only question I have is regarding rereading: So long as you get a good grasp of the text isn’t it better to move on and get a wider base? How “perfect” are you wanting to get with one piece before moving on?
Well, you will know the answer to that. I'm not saying that you need to achieve perfection. But I'll tell you that 25 times of something long, e.g. a chapter of a book, is still well within reason.
@@daysandwordswhat are you looking for when you are rereading? Is the idea to try to get to the point that every single word in their contexts is crispy and clear in your mind, or is the idea that repeated exposure is useful for its own sake subconsciously? Thanks for the info. I usually will reread a paragraph at a time if I haven’t understood it down to a phrases & logic level, but it hadn’t occurred to me to take it that far. Just trying to understand if it’s about extracting a higher level of comprehension, or about increasing exposure to something which you can already understand.
It's a bit of both. At first it's about increasing comprehension, because the language can't be reproduced accurately until it's understood. But after more times, it's about getting a subconscious feel for it, the same way as you don't consciously decide to put your foot on the correct pedals when driving a car.
listening to this while procrastinating turning back on P4 Sveriges Radio (which I don't understand) and reading pages in a conlang called neolatino (which I DO understand!) thus fulfilling the criterion of «trying to learn too many languages at the same time».
I mean, good content in the language you're learning is great, but I'd just try to find like ONE book you want to read or movie you like or something and listen to the English once and then the Indonesian over and over.
@@daysandwords I've been thinking Arcane would work well, but it seemed too advanced for effective comprehensible input. Watching in English first is a great idea, appreciate you Lamont ♥️
@@daysandwords when it comes to picking one book and reading it, should we be translating it the first read then keep rereading it over and over until you dont need to? because if we don't translate it at first how is it suppose to be comprehensible?
Lol from this video, this is my language learning plan. - finish learning the Arabic alphabet with anki (I like only small measurable goals with anki) - listen to Arabic podcasts - write down Arabic kids stories, write the phonetic translation, and then the literal translation. Then listen to the audiobook and follow along with what I've have written. -2 pimsleur lessons a week Any more ideas for Arabic specifically?
There was a blackout during filming and when I put that on my members' content, someone commented "Well you're always going to have bad luck in a Red Sox hat". 😂
I think the wrap up at the end is all good, but for #3 I still think grammar and verb conjugation is important as adult learners, but I agree you shouldn't focus exclusively on that, which I think is the point you are making.
Awesome video! Absolutely fantastic. And now I go off to sort out the kiddies breakfast but will be watching something in Swedish while doing it. Starting now, making the time, regardless of circumstances….oh and there is me talking more and doing less😂
As for #25 i honestly waited until a good time, it came, and i started studying the language every day, im 10 months in now or so lol, i think its not bad to wait a bit if you can trust yourself to actually do it at some point tbh
You’ve given great tips that have helped me discover new apps and concepts I hadn’t known before. That being said I’m totally stealing this concept of tips to stay bad for my channel lmao.
I want your opinion: What do you think of listening to audiobooks where each sentence is said in Spanish, then English, the Spanish again and onto the next sentence? Strengths and weaknesses of this approach?
I've actually been experimenting with this recently. I think it depends a lot on the level you have. I was trying it in Romanian and none of the sentences made much more sense than they did even after about 5 listens of the same chapter of an audiobook, in Romanian/Swedish/Romanian. (Swedish acting as my native language in this setting, which it's not of course but for this it was fine). I think it's a good approach but you'd need like B1 for it to do much.
I am probably about B1ish in Spanish. I just finished doing Harry Potter 1 and 2 like that I feel like each line would go from about 20-30% comprehensible to 80-100% after hearing the English. It was as if spaces had been inserted between the Spanish words, and I suddenly realized I did know most of those words, I just didn't catch them the first time. I think if I started over just pure Spanish, I would still struggle, but be a lot better off. I haven't tried yet, because, of course, instead of continuing a good thing, my curiosity got the better of me. Now I am doing it in Japanese English Japanese to see how it would go at a much lower level. For the first 3 hours or so, my heart was sinking the whole time, but then suddenly, around that time, I started hearing words that I had previously learned. Most lines, I only understand 1 word, but it's rewarding to hear anything. I am about half way through book 1, and I've only picked up 2 completely new words, but I feel like the review is amazing! I am not sure yet if I will suddenly get to the point where all of my scant vocabulary will have been reviewed and I will no longer feel progress, but so far, it's been surprisingly gratifying. So you were doing the same thing, but sticking with one chapter over and over, rather than moving on? Do you have previous Romanian? Do you feel like you are understanding the Spanish cognates?
Basically I think, like everything else, it would have a peak period and that I probably tried it too early with Romanian. The plan was to keep doing it all the way through the first chapters of the book... and I chose that book because I was able to reasonably easily get it in one target language, and one that I already spoke, hence my using Swedish and not English... I don't have the audiobook in English. If I keep doing it and keep learning words, I think it will work well, but I'm not at B1 yet... and the cognates to Spanish... hmm, nah I mean... I think speaking a bit Spanish and French help but... yeah. Basically I think it's a really good idea but so far I haven't done it that much. Once you're at B2, I think it would be more efficient to just listen to the TL.
@@daysandwords I agree that at some point, it would be better to just move to Target Language, but I don't think I have ever gotten to B2 (I like too many languages, and love none faithfully). In Thai, I can listen in Thai and read along in English, which is obviously a lot faster than the sandwich method. I did the Spanish Sandwiches for my kids to listen while they play with Legos, and realized it was helping me too. Then I started experimenting with Japanese. If I could just pick one language and stick with it... But alas, I haven't done so.
Thanks for saying so. It's a Pansonic S 50mm f1.8, but all the others in that series are of the same quality (18, 24, 35, 50, 85 and 100). But before you go spending $1000 on lenses, look into a decent light and softbox... that makes a much bigger difference.
It would really interesting to hear your advice what nonnative English speakers can improve. The situation we are in is: we listen to English constantly (tv, music, UA-cam etc), but most of us rarely speak English. We can “decode” English without effort, but producing sentences with the right word choices can be a struggle. And also the accent, I am from Sweden, so what English accent should I use? 😅 it becomes a mix of British and American English.
Yeah I saw that too... There's two of them actually. One of them possibly knows something about language learning but didn't actually watch my video and literally didn't believe that I'd even done it... like (HAVE YOU MET ME!?) haha, and the other one has the most loser energy I've ever come across... like I'm morbidly curious about how someone goes through their life with the attitude that everything is the worst thing ever.
"Native" should not be used interchangeably with the other two. No, they don't mean the same thing. It's possible to pass a C1 exam as a non-fluent speaker but that's essentially because you fudge your way through, not because you are actually at C1. True C1 level is fluent. Native or "native-like" is a whole different level.
Another tip is to get EXTREME into just immersion. Don't even know how to say "hello" in the target language? Pick a complicated show in that language and just listen to it on repeat for decades. _Don't_ try to pick out the words or sentences and make flashcards of them, nor should you learn the grammar in the sentences being said and how the same word might change in certain situations. There are only two golden rules: studying's for nerds, and a diversity of study methods depending on your level and what exactly you're trying to learn is for sweats!
Just to "warn" you so as not to disappointment in the future - I've got 21 of the 30 teams haha. I just ordered another Boston one when a bunch of the "Players' Weekend" ones were on clearance. It's sitting with my sister in the USA, waiting for her to ship me everything I've bought over the last year or so hehe.
All of this times 100,000,000,000. Absolutely no lie in what you said and frankly this mentality should be applied to everything in life, not just language learning. Especially no25, Start now! It really can be that simple. There will never be a perfect moment to start, so why not now.
The part about people who only speak one language giving advice about language learning is so true. I get so annoyed when I say I like learning languages and someone tells me to learn a bunch of grammar or take a class
Great video!!! I love the 'has learned a second language as an adult' thing. Way too many people who learnt as a child and then who attribute their high school grammar lessons that they obviously blitzed because they were already fluent to their fluency. I think it's because they got so much praise and confidence for acing all the tests. Fallacious thinking anyways.
Yep! The amazing Lamont reminds me of the facts of [language learning] life. And just when I was starting to wonder if I should be watching that Ukrainian morning TV show when all I can understand is the weather report. My brother has turned into a baseball fanatic. He is in New York and a big fan of the Mets. I am not fluent enough in baseball to have a meaningful conversation with him about the game. Maybe you could do a short series of baseball explainers?
Hilarious what some youtubers do to promote their sponsors. Can't tell if Shark has a Spanish, French, or Aussi accent.... or maybe all at the same time 😆
Don’t know but I’m 76 and have managed to claw my way to B2 in Spanish and understand the gossip at the laundromat and speak to Spanish speakers where I volunteer.
The bigger scammer on language learning now telling people immersion won't work is Oriental Pearl. And she'll delete the comments of everyone exposing her. As someone who can speak Japanese I can spot her. And she even reported my user account for telling the truth. For someone who started learning Japanese when fluent in Chinese, living in China (I can't evaluate her Chinese yet; I will) have been learning Japanese for 12 years (all according to her) and lived in Japan for 9 years and currently live with a Japanese dude her Japanese is EXTREMELY poor. The problem s that when you don't know a language yet you can be exposed to 10 different speakers of the language at 10 very different levels and probably all of them, or most of them, will look as proficient as any other. When I stated learning Japanese around 2016 I though she was impressive. But I started without knowing Chinese characters, and any words in Japanese, from Brazil, never even had the opportunity to visit Japan, and now my Japanese is WAY ahead her Japanese. And I still have a LONG way to go in Japanese. My Japanese is nowhere near my English, my strongest language, for instance! Anyone starting Japanese form English, from their homes in the West is DOMMED to fail following her "advices".
Possibly. I think most of these people are doing what they feel that they need to do. I won't name names but there is one account that has been pi**ing me off since it started, pretty much. It's such pious crap... But I'm over it all. I just want to learn languages and go to different places.
@@daysandwords I'm just pointing direct at her because I went through the "Japanese journey" and I did think she was great. Ad also because I don't see this fact stated much: When you are learning a language your "horizon is short", so to speak. You just can't see much beyond what you can do yourself. So if you are presented to 10 different speakers at 10 different levels, as long as they are a bit beyond your level yourself, it may seem that ALL of them are at the same level, a near-native level. Only when you go yourself your current level you can start to tell apart their levels. To a language that takes so long o be good at (from someone from the West, at leas) she can make a carrier out of looking like this high level Japanese speaker that "didn't use immersion". When in fact her level is appallingly LOW considering how much exposure to the language she SHOULD have by this point.
@@daysandwords She dare to point out to an youtuber that has FAR better Japanese than she has and say, "haha, he thinks he needs 10,000 hours!" and make her audience laugh at that guy because her audience couldn't possibly tell how SUPERIOR is the Japanese of that guy compared to her, and if the guy himself would brazenly point this out he'd come out as arrogant.
You forgot one: "Don't use iTalki tutors of your same sex - EVER. Only choose young attractive females tutors, even if you're married and have kids." Wives really appreciate that one.
I'm not sure if that's meant to be inversed or not, though. From a language perspective, there'd be nothing wrong with only booking lessons with people of the opposite sex. In my experience, 99% of good iTalki tutors are women. Young and attractive? No, not necessarily.

@@LanguageMaus P.S. October starts 4th quarter, so it's a good time to try this. ;) I'll take into consideration the time of year... I like Norwegian during Oct-Dec just because of the colder climate there, and I can watch my silly Norwegian Christmas dramedy... Hjem Til Jul ( Home For Christmas).
Like, "Oh, this technique works well with ADHD..."
I know, because I am also diagnosed with ADHD and so are both my kids (ok the youngest one isn't yet but he will be haha).

Going to have to say the ad was brilliant 😂
Loved this video! So funny! Definitely need more content like this online. I'm going to take your advice and study some Italian now, want to see how much i can improve before the end of the year.

GOLD: People always say the language I am learning is hard, including the teachers. Is this to make students feel better if they are not good or if they succeed? Your idea on priming is spot on.
SILVER: The language I am learning has little beginner content like Swedish. This could have been a crutch or excuse Satisfaction is listening to content meant for adults and understanding it.
BRONZE: I need to pay more attention to my mistakes and then work on them to stop making them. Learn they phrases!

@@daysandwordsthank you! I’ll keep all this in mind and see how I can work it in

Yeah I'd say it's pretty much impossible without Bluey, I'd give up if I were you
I mean, good content in the language you're learning is great, but I'd just try to find like ONE book you want to read or movie you like or something and listen to the English once and then the Indonesian over and over.

One of the classics of the genre is CGP Grey's "7 Ways to Maximize Misery". It's absolutely brilliant.
@@daysandwords are you learning romanian, for real!??
@@daysandwords I agree that at some point, it would be better to just move to Target Language, but I don't think I have ever gotten to B2 (I like too many languages, and love none faithfully). In Thai, I can listen in Thai and read along in English, which is obviously a lot faster than the sandwich method. I did the Spanish Sandwiches for my kids to listen while they play with Legos, and realized it was helping me too. Then I started experimenting with Japanese. If I could just pick one language and stick with it... But alas, I haven't done so.

I have a running list of naughty/swear words in my target language, very helpful

I see terms of C1/fluent/native used interchangeably often. I know "native" level is the gold standard, but do all these mean the same thing?
"Native" should not be used interchangeably with the other two. No, they don't mean the same thing.
It's possible to pass a C1 exam as a non-fluent speaker but that's essentially because you fudge your way through, not because you are actually at C1. True C1 level is fluent.
Native or "native-like" is a whole different level.
i was thinking how effective I was so far.. until i read title again and saw it's NOT (negative) 💀
Almost no one actually does that though. Much more common advice is more on the other end of that scale.
It took me a while to realise you didn't have a black eye but it was the lighting angle that made you look like you have onr 😅
