In case anyone's wondering about the projectile invalid stuff mentioned around 5:50, it's usually just network lag. On your game client you fired the shot, but a moment later when that shot reaches the server the server decides the shot wasn't possible. Could be that you were already dead according to the server, maybe your position on the server was too disjointed from your game client creating an "impossible" shot on the server, etc. Every game suffers from this but few games give you info like the combat log to actually see it happening
Yes this. Everyone on rust thinks this is some intention feature. Literally every shooter has this.

Invalid is when it shows you hitting them before they hit you on your screen, but you only see that cos of latency to the server. The server sees that they actually hit you first, and makes your shots after you died invalid. The guy did kill you, it just showed you hitting him first with that last shot, when his last shot actually hit you first killing you. That make sense?
There's other instances too, like if on your screen it shows them somewhere and you hit them, but really they moved, and again latency caused the movement not to show up on your screen yet, so will also give invalids (this happens a lot with snipers for example, or shooting at players traveling fast in mini's). There's several reasons you'll get invalid, but they aren't bugs, they are legitimate invalid shots (for one reason or another).

Thats why i stopped playing fps games. Being shot around corners, mag dumping into ppls faces and still losing... its what i get for living in an area with crappy internet.
This would for sure happen in other games too, you just don't get to know for certain that your projectile was considered invalid since most games don't print that out for you to read.

A projectle invalid isn't a "feature" or anything like that. How it works, is on your side, you shoot him. But on the server side, you were dead before you shot. Thus returning invalid. EVERY game has this. That's why in games like siege and cod, you swear you headshot a guy, but you were already dead. People in rust tend to think this is some intentional feature
I can explain the invalid stuff since I'm working on a similar game right now:
Rust spawns the bullets in instantly on the client (your local version of the game) rather than waiting for the server to spawn them in. This way, you get instant feedback when you click to fire.
The positive of this is that you don't feel like the game lags when you shoot because the client (your local instance of the game) doesn't wait for the bullet to spawn, it just shoots.
On the server, it spawns it in after half your ping in milliseconds. Then it checks to see if this was a valid bullet, if your character is dead already on the server when this check happens you get a projectile_invalid. You haven't seen that you're dead on your local copy of the game, but on the server you are dead. So it looks like you shot the other player first, when in reality you are dead. This is just something that has to happen which is why they do projectile_invalids.

The thing about projectile invalid is that other games just don't tell you about it.
There's names for the manner in which game devs fix the issue, that's how widespread it is.
A lot of games use _"favour the shooter"_ for example.

5:49 Projectile Invalid happens because you fired the bullet on your client side AFTER your character was registered as dead on the server side. So you died, but you were still alive on your local machine because it takes time to receive the event from the server that you are dead, you fired your gun and the event was sent to the server. Server looked at the time you fired your gun and realized you were dead before the shot was ever fired, so the server invalidated the gun event and marked it as "Projectile Invalid".
All online games have this problem they just don't tell you when it happens like rust does.
Thats one reason for invalids, another one is shit hitreg.
Facepunch recently changed invalids that were caused by death to "you died first", and i still get regular invalids sometimes.

How did you go burst mode?
Invalids are kinda not fixable. I don't notice it as much in other games cause u can't check in other games to see when it happens but it does always happen.
Mostly caused by server lag but can also be affected by the terrain such as ur shooting into water whilst being just barely above water
The issue is that you as a dev can't account for everything and somethings just can't be changed without affecting a bunch of other stuff cause if they fixed the water shooting issues it's likely going to cause serious collision problems with boats and players.
As for vents what likely caused that was hit box issues where the part of the body u shot was also colliding with the vents hit box and it thru off weird math that was just registered as an Invalid.
It sucks but there's nothing u can do about it without fundamentally changing the game and basically rebuilding it from scratch with the intention being to remove this one issue and dealing with the other issues it creates and even still u can't account for server lag
You gotta learn when to leave and when to continue going deep on people's bases and when on oil!
