Giving Monfils no Credit at all is just wrong and weak
He was being honest about his performance. Don't twist his words. Giving credit to his opponent without being honest about his feelings about the match would be disingenuous.

did we watch the same match? how did monfils play really well, his game was riddled with UEs and dumb decisions that honestly prolonged a match he could’ve won faster. if you’ve watched any other of alcaraz’s matches, this is very close to his worst level. his forehand and backhand were sloppy often and he let his frustration overtake his game
The biggest disappointment for me is not that he lost or that he played badly, but that he did not congratulate his opponent or recognize his merits.

I agree completely. Maybe some parts of the interview were cut, but still he didn't need to go on and on about how this was the worst match he ever played, blah blah. Gael played a great match, the score was close, they had plenty of great rallies. We're starting to see some arrogance from Carlos, and it's why he broke his racket. "I can't believe I'm losing to this guy!!" Gael deserves more respect.

I think you could be right. I’m willing to give Carlos the benefit of the doubt because I’ve never really heard him like this before. He’s usually very gracious in defeat, so…🤷♂️
Cut him some slack. Yes Monfils played very well and he could have mentioned that, but that was not the primary reason he felt he lost. Carlos was very shaken after the Olympics, the loss to Novak shook him more than I have ever seen. He is still human, and very young, always under enormous pressure to be the best. He is going through a tough emotional period. Its probably best he lost, so he can have some time to process his emotions, and be ready for the US Open.
He shouldn't be shook, novak is the best to ever play the game, he actually lucky novak is injured and old.

Novak didn’t give his opponents credit when he was 21. Carlos was a bit rattled after the surprise defeat and couldn’t collect his thoughts. Besides he was just answering the question directly.

I understand Carlos' frustration over his game today. But he certainly could have shown some humility by giving Monfils credit for the excellent showing he made on the court.

Should give Gaël props for actually bringing his experience and outplay Carlos in the conditions presented there, instead of just saying you played bad, nothing to take away from that..
Even me, a non tennis player can see so much from that match that Carlos should definitively learn from.
And last but not least. Accepting a loss, and giving some props to your opponent is just normal politeness at least.

I’m only going to say this once…. First of all, Carlos is probably the least disrespectful player and person we have on tour right now. Secondly, this WAS, THEE worst he’s played ever if not for a very very long time. Barely exceeding 30% of his level at any point. Anyone, and I mean anyone who watches ALL of his matches, every year, since he broke on the scene (like I have) knows this. So he’s not being disrespectful to Gael at all, he very much respects him, evidence of that being the same hand shake and brief hug that he gave when he beat him in Miami. Just because he’s here talking about his own very off performance and no mention of Gael does not mean there’s any disrespect.

He should be ashamed of himself. Not of how he played, but how he conducted himself, including this interview. This is not how you improve, how you become better. I hope Sinner wins the US Open and teaches him a lesson on how to stay grounded. I am a Spaniard and have been rooting for Carlos for a long time, but he is on the verge of loosing my support (and that of many others) if he forgets how he should be behaving on and off the court. Thats what made people LOVE him.
I know he is under tremendous pressure by media and even his own team but he has to understand that kids all over the world are looking at him as the absolute role model (here in Spain specially). It's not Who you are underneath, It is what you do that defines you.
Guys listen…every single match I have ever seen win or loose Carlos has said that the opponent did phenomenal, I’m not saying it was wrong for him to not say anything but I’m saying he could have slipped up and forgot, it happens. No one is perfect.

There's more to this interview, right? It's pretty standard to discuss your own performance and the opponent. Carlos usually does, and im sure he said it to Monfils at the net. All the questions in this section are about his performance or the matvhes with Novak. Just feel the comments about Monfils have been edited out of this
The interview does not look edited. The same thing happened to Novak during interviews. He would be criticized later and by fan comments that he didn’t give enough credit to his opponent. But the questions that were asked had to do with why he himself lost the match and that is something that both he and Alcaraz are willing to talk about - and that was what was going on in their minds and what was happening to their own game that accounted for their loss.

This was not Alcaraz's worst match ever. Monfils served quite well and Alcaraz made his share of unforced errors. Alcaraz has lost his last 3 tiebreakers including the olympics.

It's painful to see Carlos struggling like this...but that's tennis. Matches aren't just physically devastating, they can also be mentally & emotionally devastating. I personally think he's exhausted, & hit a wall out there on the court.
Carlos is very young, works very hard, & still has a lot to learn. He's on an incredible trajectory, & I hope he's able to put this match in context & keep moving forward.

LOOK AT THE STATS! His stats on server, ROS, Winner/Error ratio was all in the normal range. NOT his worst match at all! He's crying, like he does when he puts his finger to his ear begging for crowd attention. There is one stat that caused this defeat. He is ranked #16 in pressure situations (break points, tiebreaks, and 3rd sets). Sinner is #1. He collapsed in pressure moments as his record indicates. He couldn't lift his game in the tiebreak, break points, and the third set. Where's the smile? Oh, thats only when he wins. He is not Sinner, Federer, or Nadal in character or big moments. Stats were better than Monfils, pressure situations were his main problem.

Federer had the same problem as Alcaraz, that's why Djokovic got the better of him in their rivalry. Novak always played pressure points with greater success.

Roger learnt that around 25 years of age.. Rafa is probably the only player who never did it and was at pro level in handling pressure from very young age.. I feel Alcaraz needs to step up and mature his game and mental resilience, similar to how Jannik improved his quality tennis a lot in the past 12 months. The only way to do it is to get a better coach and team around him, a coach that can take him to the next level - similar to how jannik coach made a big difference in jannik advancement

@@StacyLosca thanks but you would need to look more closely at the performances during these slams as well as look at the stats. Alcaraz is great but worth noting that sinner had cramps during their match in Roland Garros and Novak’s knee injury made it difficult for him to run in matches at wimbeldon. Earlier this year, Novak even expressed his thought of skipping wimbeldon all together as he wanted to focus on the olympics so it makes sense that he didn’t fight much alcaraz in the wimbeldon finale this year but beat him in the Olympics (in 2 sets). I feel those factors contributed to alcaraz’ GS wins this year. Also Alcaraz match stats have gone down this year. He is making more unforced errors, missed serves, etc. His tennis was impeccable/ much better quality in 2022 and 2023. His tennis quality regressed this year and is becoming more and more inconsistent. I personally root and support alcaraz but doubt he will be able to maintain his current ATP ranking in the top 3 for the rest of the year

He did not loose hope,changed his diet and leaned to deal with hostile spectator . He was playing wimbeldon final against Rodger ,100% audience were cheering Rodger, Novak trained in such a way that when audience was chanting Rodger , he was hearing Nole. Learn from your idol RAFA ,he never broke racket,still got 22 gland slams. Hope you will learn, you are very young and potential to be on top next 10 years.
