    I know it's over is one of the best songs ever written, unbelievably complex in lyric and music. Yes bleak. Not dreary. Incredibly emotional and worth checking out for anyone with angst or depression, it's relatable and the form of the song is interesting throughout. Also Frankly Mr Shankly is hilarious. People never understand Morrissey's sense of humour, but in the UK anyone can relate to the ingenious lyrics. The Queen is Dead is in my opinion the best album ever created. And many many others who understand the true genius of the melody line and lyrics agrees. Johnny Marr + Morrissey = perfection.

      +Sam Jordan I agree with you. Marr + Morrissey = perfection. I think the Smiths only recorded one bad song. To me that is incredible. I don't think I can say that about to many other bands. I love the Beatles but they had plenty of crappy songs. On my way home from work today I saw a bumper sticker on a car, Moz Angeles.
      Thanks for the comment.

    ...i'm totally on your side in nearly every single statement !!! unbelievable ;-) IMO one of the really few bands that had a similar impact of a 'genre' like THE BEATLES in pop are the RAMONES to punk or KRAFTWERK to electronic music!

    Longtime Smiths fan,have all but Strangeways on vinyl of their studio albums,must get round to grabbing that.A friend whos nearly a decade older than me was lucky to see them when they played here in Cork in 84,one of two gigs they played there that year.He says that the front row was full of punks who were spitting on the stage,causing Moz to storm off stage for a while.

    Hi Richie, I didn't see this video go up. The Smiths were one of my favorite bands in the 80's, I still have my original albums from back then. Morrissey was a manic depressed man and that made for great lyrics. I thought they had great catchy tunes for sure. I'll show my 80's collection in the upcoming months. Thanks for sharing this.

    Had to watch this again, I had to forward through it this morning, didn't wanna be late to work. Great video Richie!!!!!!!!!! I really dug this a lot. I bought Hatful of hollow a few years ago, I had to have it, Mine was on cassette back in the day , just so I could take it in the car, so many of my 80's favorites were on cassette, but I also have a bunch on vinyl. The Queen is dead is one of my favorite albums by them, takes me back to high school. You have to remember Morrissey was a manic depressive, so his lyrics were very dark depending on his moods, I think that is what I liked most about the music, you never knew what you were going to get.In my opinion, I feel Johnny Marr was one of the best guitarist that I have ever heard, just listen to all the songs and his guitar playing is unreal!!!!!!! The other band during this time that changed my life was The Cure! Those two bands really opened my eyes to the music world. Very cool bootlegs you have. I'll have to blow the dust off those Smiths albums, I really need to reflect. Thanks so much again for posting this, you really do some cool shit on here for sure, just like the Cramps. Take care and I hope the Holiday season brings you joy and happiness. See you soon my friend, I have to go dig out those ole' Smith records.

    Excellent job Richie. I really enjoyed the first five minutes or so when you spoke about Morrissey.
    I am sure that you can research all of the people that are on the Smiths covers/inserts online. But the cover and insert star on Queen is Dead is French actor Alain Delon. He was in the movie Texas Across The River with Dean Martin.

    I've just about finished my own Smiths vinyl album collection and I'm very pleased with it. The thing that strikes me the most is that they were only together for a short space of time, yet the music was awesome. The chemistry between Morrissey and Marr was incredible. The albums I have are - The Smiths, Hatful of Hollow, Meat is Murder, The Queen is Dead, Louder than bombs, Strangeways here we come and "Rank"

    Wasn't really aware of the Smiths at the time (I think I knew What Time Is Now), they were very much out of that UK pop & rock scene which there was a huge divide between what was going on there and here in North America. And like you say, very guitar driven which wasn't the prevailing sound at the time. Only one I have by them on vinyl is Hatful Of Hollow though I have the rest of the original albums on CD. I think hearing Hatful on vinyl was what got me to realize how much of a guitar band they were. Great story behind Panic, hang the dj, hang the dj indeed. Probably not a popular one for airplay lol. Great collection and overview of the band here Rich!

    Hi Richie, I missed this one from you, I loved the Smiths in H.S. I have a bunch of the originals also. I think Johnny Marr is such a great guitarist, truthfully the whole band was excellent, you don't get many bands where the musicians were all great. Peace!

    Great video, Rich. I didn't expect to see so many albums! The Smiths -to me - were weird in that they're an essential band but they never had that one studio album that was killer from start to finish. All the studio LPs could have been killer-no-filler EPs. I always prefer the original version of an album, the way it was intended, before the marketing folks change tracks to make it sell better (in the US) and that kills me on the Meat is Murder LP. Without How Soon is Now, it's just an average record. The final song is hugely important, but man, tough to listen to. Anyway, great collection!
    Cheers. Tom

    • @vinylrichie007
      @vinylrichie007  8 років тому +1

      +High Rant District I think I like their albums more than you do. On The Queen Is Dead its not so much that all the songs aren't good but the order in which they were placed. The 3rd and 4th songs on side one shouldn't have been placed back to back. They are too similar.
      Thanks for watching.

    • @highrantdistrict
      @highrantdistrict 8 років тому

      Their "William, It Was Really Nothing" EP is great. You've got the title song, How Soon is Now, plus Please, Please, Please let me get what I want. I picked it up because my copy of Meat is Murder doesn't include How Soon is Now. The Smiths released a lot of EPs and singles - a LOT. I think that was their area of strength more so than LPs.Still, it's a band I dig a lot from my youth.
      Cheers, Tom

    What's up Richie, I really enjoyed this video mainly because I agree with a lot of your takes on the Smiths. They are one of those bands that people either love or hate.? I know that a lot punk guys tend to hate them but I love the Smiths myself. They were not quite synth pop, not quite post punk, they were just a unique band, and comparing them to the Beatles is not a stretch because they were that good! The Queen is Dead for the most part is considered to be their best record but I love Meat is Murder, especially side 2. That Joke isn't Funny Anymore, Well I Wonder, Meat Is Murder etc. What a killer album! Good stuff Richie!

      +erick medeiros Thanks for watching. I remember once I was wearing a Wall Of Voodoo shirt and one of my hardcore punk friends asked if I liked them. When I said yes he had a look of confusion on his face.
      I wasn't completely happy with the video. Some editing would have been helpful. There were some things that I forgot to mention and there moments when I'm thinking of the right words to say that were kind of awkward. But what the hell, I kind of like doing one take videos.

    Loved your video Rich. Do you know Kirsty MacColl? She is the female voice on "Ask" and "Golden Lights". Johnny Marr contributed quite a bit to her best album "Electric Landlady". Kind of a Folk Pop thing. It sounds like those 12" singles with live cuts are pretty nice! Good to know. Beautiful records! I think the incredible melodies and sometimes transcendent vibe of their best work is worthy of your Beatles comparison. I think which tracks those are kind of depends on the person, but they are so consistently great. Madness? That took me by surprise! I saw them play for about a song and a half at a festival and was horrified. It may have just been the gold outfits and the sun's heat burning my soul into nothingness but I had to leave! I remember them fondly on mtv but you'll have to tell me what to check out cause I'm scared! Nice one!

    My copy of the Panic 12" single is a german one, so not only is it on a cool translucent blue vinyl but it's backed with There is a Light that Never Goes Out and the Queen is Dead. Better song selection that the UK one in my opinion. have you by any chance, listened to the newer pressings by Warner Bros? I'm just getting into them, and it's easier to go to a local Barnes and Noble's and buy a copy for 25 bucks.
    I'm just worried about the entire digital to lp thing that takes away from the sound. Everyone always mentions how reissues should be taken with a grain of salt, but I was just wondering if you've happened to compare them.

    • @vinylrichie007

      +Wat Inthebutt I have not heard the new reissues of the Smiths. I just bought Hunky Dory by Bowie at Barnes and Noble and it sounds better than the original. I got 30% off, so I got the album for $17. That is hard to beat. I did look at the new Smiths albums and they looked great. I understand your concern about the digital to vinyl thing. The Temples first album sounds better on CD than it does on vinyl. Like I said the new Bowie reissues sound better than the originals. If it sounds good on your system and the price is right I wouldn't worry about it.

    its funny how you mention madness as suggs was a huge morrissy fan. And one of the things that turned me on to giving morrissy more of a listen as a song writer was after seeing suggs doing a cover of, "last of the international playboys" and "suedehead" on a bbc late night tv show in about 1992 and thinking how good it was , and i HATED suggs lol. Also madness had a festivel in the uk they held every year in the summer called "madfest" and had mozza as support one year and a riot nearly happend after moz played his song "national front disco" remember it was all over the news at the time and it more or less destroyed morrissys reputation in the UK, from which he's never really fully quite recovered from, even today he's seen as quite a pollerising figer in Britain. Ironically NFD is among one of my favourite songs of his particularly the live version, its just a great piece of music and is NOT pro fascist it tells the story about freinds and family lossing someone to fascism hardly an endorsement. But madness fans were not known for their intellect i guess lol
