The Harp That Once Through Tara's Halls

- Tune played at the "Harpers For Tara" demonstration in Dublin, September 22nd. The lyrics, by Thomas Moore, for this tune says so much today.
The harp that once through Tara's halls
The soul of music shed,
Now hangs as mute on Tara's walls,
As if that soul were fled --
So sleeps the pride of former days,
So glory's thrill is o'er;
And hearts that once beat high for praise,
Now feel that pulse no more!
No more to chiefs and ladies bright,
The harp of Tara swells:
The chord, alone, that breaks at night,
Its tale of ruin tells.
Thus Freedom now so seldom wakes,
The only throb she gives,
Is when some heart indignant breaks,
To show that still she lives!
We explain the story behind this song on our tours of Tara.
My mom used to sing this while she was working around the house. Reminds me a bit of 'Lovely Leitrim', which is funny because my dad is from Mohill and used to belt out a few lines once in a while.
Such a beautiful tune by the legendary Thomas Moore !!! I played this song, as a boy on a button accordian !!! Brings back such fond memories
Really beautiful!!, and thank you for posting the words.
I just love this song,and to listen to the tune played by these harpists is just the tonic I need.
Thank you for sharing.
Really beautiful

General salute - present ARMS! This would be a fitting alternative to Amhran na Bfiann.
That must be the largest number of harps gathered in one place since . . . well, since Tara was a going concern.
Ha, ha, thank you for that :-)
CelticWays, I like this song alot and was wondering if I could use it in a video that I am working on Putting out. I just LOVE the sound of the Harp Orchestra. Is that the Belfast Harp Orchestra by chance?
@flanncada
