Thankyou for the series of photos my dad enjoyed them he was born and raised in shotton we left when the pit closed around 1972/73 I dont reconise any faces but remember the places well
Amazing set of images. My dad was born there in 1922. At 14 he worked down the pit looking after the ponies. He said once they went down, they stayed there for years and years, stabled underground. And finally after they were too old and weak they were taken back to the surface and just left to survive on the slag heaps. He used to feed the old ones on his way home.
