That’s why this channel means so much! Trying to change things as a parent now!!
Do you want some interesting history about the peanut? The dust bowl was due to over-fertilization and poor farming tactics b/c all of the nutrients were out of the soil. George Washington Carver was an expert in soil management, and he he recommend that the farmers who didn't have anything growing during the dust bowl plant peanuts b/c they replenished so many nutrients back into the soil. The farmers did that, the soil recovered, but it meant that there was a surplus of peanuts in the U.S. At this point, he locked himself in his laboratory and he came up with about 50 different things to do with peanuts including peanut oil, peanut butter, peanut powder, peanut brittle, and a ton of other peanut stuff.

The peanut butter connection is questionable.
Crop rotation was part of his model too. And it was almost 300 patents! He was a Christian man with a squeaky voice.

I grew loopha/luffa 2 years ago - 1 plant gave me 100+ gourds!! None of my friends, family, neighbors have had to buy sponges since.

Thank you for your content. I’m from zone 6 in MO. The soil in my region can sprout children if you get deep enough in the mud. So I’m hopeful for my garden. Growing up we just grew what the nursery had but watching your videos really gained me knowledge on something I love. My parents and myself live in a mild food desert (fried chicken in the fridge 24/7) so for the health of my family I want to grow them better food and hopefully make a profit. You’ve helped with that process so I truely mean it when I say thank you.
I fell in love with strawflowers this past season! I grew a dwarf variety because I didn't intend to use them for cutting, but just for attracting pollinators in my veggie patch. They were such a big hit! I never saw them bee-free! They bloomed from the first week of June all the way upto the beginning of the winters. I'm at Seattle. Definitely growing these again! Can't wait!
I love, love, love loofa for cooking!! It has the sweetest taste and is loaded with all kinds of vitamins and minerals. I pick them when they are young for cooking and designate a couple to make sponges. I also like to harvest the sponges when they are yellow rather than brown as the fiber is firmer for my uses. The brown stage will give you tons of seeds. Thank you for highlighting them!!
Fingers crossed I can get loofahs to grow this year! I saw a video from someone where they cut it long ways, folded in half and stitched around the edge to make them easier to use.

I live in South Dakota and was able to grow peanuts successfully. It was a fun experiment and the peanuts tasted amazing.
I live in SD too! I grew peanuts twice. The second year I forgot about them until I noticed a critter dug up the few left. Tennessee Valencia. In my area they definitely need to be started early.

Scarlet runner beans attract humming birds like crazy. I see them visiting everyday when the beans are flowering. The beans are tasty too. You can harvest the bean pods when young or harvest the seeds when it’s fully ripe.
I sent my secret santa my list of seeds I wanted which was mostly the new stuff you did the video on and some seed starting stuff. I got a dashcam instead which is still awesome, but my husband proceeded to buy the seeds on my wishlist for me, but he bought them all from Amazon. I ended up with 1lb of cornflower seeds, aka blue bachelor buttons 😅 which are getting returned today along with some cheap short hanging greenstalk like planters for strawberries. I love him, and he gets an A for effort, because he knows I love seeds and gardening 🤷♀
On the subject of Lemongrass, I went to my grocery store and bought a bunch, and planted those! 😁

This year I learned how to make 'Italian Baked Tomatoes' using the Roma's from my garden. OMG! They are the best tasting tomatoes on sandwiches I have ever had!!! I will be planting more Roma Tomatoes this year just to bake all of them.
Very easy instructions: wash & thinly slice ripened Roma Tomatoes. Lay on a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Sprinkle tomatoes with olive oil, salt, pepper & Italian seasoning. Bake on low temp, about 250 degrees for 1 hour. Turn tomatoes over, bake another hour. Once most of the moisture is baked out & tomatoes are somewhat dry/stiff/brittle, remove from oven & let cool. Store short term in an air tight container, layered between paper towels. For long term you can freeze or put in olive oil. They taste amazing & won't last because you will eat them like candy!

This past year I grew angled luffa (Chinese okra) up cables that I strung into the 2nd floor windows. The plants themselves were planted around the compost bin, since I was unable to relocate that into a shady location. The luffa vines grew so prolifically that they covered the cables in a matter of weeks. I got more luffas than I knew what to do with. We had more than enough to eat, and I must have gotten several thousand seeds from the gourds I allowed to mature.
Wow! Do you have a farmer's market in your area, where you might be able to sale some of them?
Love that Kevin is trying out all the lettuce. I get overwhelmed with the selection but it's definitely a crop I use all the time.

I'm just here to give props to Jacques for pronouncing Phacelia correctly! Haha! Just teasing you, man. Great video, as always. Super stoked on a new year of gardening, and looking forward to trying out some new varieties of veggies in the garden. For me, I am probably most excited to try the sweet corn, the strawberry popcorn and several sweet pepper varieties we picked up from Botanical Interests. And I should add a special thanks for the purple sprouting broccoli recommendation that I got from watching this channel in 2024, and I can say they have been the best producing, most delicious broccoli we have ever grown in our garden. We have so much broccoli we are giving it away to 3 different households, and still donating to our local food bank. No joke, purple sprouting broccoli has been our biggest fall/winter season success story of 2024. Our family is absolutely loving it!

Some new things for me this year, a goji, jumping on the dragonfruit train, snakebeans, malabar spinach and the pink amaranth from baker creek! Pretty stoked for 2025!

Zone 8. Been struggling with an acre that was covered in rock. I have chickens and have been throwing wood chips, chicken poo and a few truck loads of fairly inexpensive soil, for years. This year, I have a ton of zone 8 wild flowers ready to go in to feed the soil and the local birds. I also have put in a ton of onions, ginger and garlic for pest control.
Also I cannot recommend yellow heritage tomatoes enough. They propagate freely, and taste so good.

When peanuts set fruit they use up the fixed nitrogen in the soil. They only fix nitrogen in the soil before they set fruit. Therefore, they can't be used for both purposes in a single crop. They can do either or, but not both in a single crop. Same as peas and beans.
Some other gardening UA-camr advised using loofa sections as seed starter pots.

I hope this message gets seen and answered respectfully. I plan on planting a type of lemon tree in my front yard and as I was starting to dig I found some white grubs of varying sizes. I do not know what beetle they come from and I read on some site that they eat the roots of decaying plants and grass, and on other sites they are known to be great pollinators. I don't want to kill them because of that fact but I also don't want them to kill my lemon tree before it gets sturdy enough to defend itself. If anyone can help solve this I would greatly appreciate it. Also the type of lemon tree is known in México as a tequila lemon but once I know it's true name I'll let everyone know just in case that makes a difference.

im excited for my sheet to finish this spring! I planted my winter wheat all over the fence line and it just took off. can't wait for the seed heads to start showing
I’m most excited for the strawberries! I just put them into the starter molds yesterday. It’s a while till spring but I’m gearing up! Lots of peppers some for paprika, tomatoes, cucumbers, maybe corn I haven’t decided yet. And much more! But for now I’m resigned to chasing the husky around the backyard because there’s a foot of snow on the ground.

I grew lacy phacelia this past year! The bees went crazy for the purple flowers, and because of the continuous blooming on the same stalk, I felt bad about deadheading. Well, they reseeded like crazy, and with no hard frosts yet, the new seedlings are doing great and keeping my broccoli plants company 😆 Glad they are native here!
Vermenstera has a liquid worm castings (tea??) sold by the pint and I hear it like liquid gold. You can you it as a inoculate or mix with water n fertilizer as normal. I hear a few rare fruit growers use it as a root stimulant and place their cuttings into this stuff and the root systems after a month are incredible 😊

Hi! Hungarian here! You almost nailed the paprika name, Jacques! The 'Kalo' part was good. The end is more like when you say 'chai' (the tea), but the 'i' at the end is more pronounced, I guess! It's a Hungarian place where it comes from!

I did a 10 or 7 gal growbag of peanuts for the 1st time, this past year and they did great ! I planted like 3- 4 starters
I started planting some seeds in my greenhouse yesterday and was just thinking, "epic gardening may put our their 2025 seed video soon". I love your seed videos! I will have the videos on in the background--your April fools joke about planting an egg for eggplant made me pause as I was planting, haha! It was a great joke 😅

For folks who are NOT living in Zone 8,9, and 10 -- just a reminder (I live and garden in zone 3-4 in upstate NY) -- your best friends in terms of getting started out in the garden (not starting seeds indoors - that's a different topic) are a) a soil thermometer and b) a seed germination temperature chart. For those of us who are absolutely champing at the bit to start things, here's a couple of tips: 1) there are two basic families that will germinate in soil when it hits about 45 degrees in the spring: spinach and cabbage. Now - in the spinach family are spinach, chard and beets. In the cabbage family, you will find, cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, collards, kale, kohlrabi, mustards and turnips. Yes, you can start these seeds inside and then transplant them outdoors when the soil temperatures are at least 45, but you can ALSO MAKE A FURROW AND PLANT THEM DIRECTLY IN THE SOIL WHEN IT REACHES 45. WHICH IS WHY YOU NEED A SOIL THERMOMETER AND AS SOON AS THE SNOW DISAPPEARS FROM YOUR GARDEN BEDS, START TO TAKE THOSE TEMPERATURES. 2) SECOND: IF YOU WANT TO SPEED THINGS UP A BIT AND THERE IS STILL A BIT OF SNOW ON YOUR BEDS, JUST SHOVEL IT OFF. IF YOU WANT TO SPEED IT UP EVEN MORE, PUT IN WIRE HOOPS AND DRAPE THICK CLEAR PLASTIC OVER THE HOOPS (SECURE THEM WITH STAPLES, ROCKS OR SOIL ALONG THE EDGES). THAT WILL PRODUCE A GREENHOUSE EFFECT IN THE SOIL AND IT WILL WARM UP FASTER STILL. I ONCE WAS ABLE TO GET BEETS AND GREENS PLANTED IN EARLY APRIL IN MY GARDEN THIS WAY. EPIC HAS SOME TERRIFIC VARIETIES OF THESE FAMILIES OF VEGGIES AND MANY OF THEM WON'T BE IN YOUR LOCAL HOME/GARDEN CENTER!

@@GoingGreenMom I use a meat probe by Taylor - it's about 5" from the end to the bottom of the round button (which has the screen- it's battery powered) and I put it into the dirt as far as I can get it in. When I first start taking temperatures, the ground is pretty hard because it's still partially frozen, but by the time I'm able to get the probe all the way into the dirt, I'm getting to 40F, so I know I'm getting close to planting time for those veggies.

Wish 1 experiment could be done ❤ would ❤❤❤to see a 1vs1 Using worm castings vs normal soil regimen. I m raising about a lb of red worms to hopefully be able to harvest enough casting to use with my top soil amendment to my dragon fruit pots & my raised beds.
So far so good with the dual fabric hot house keeping my dragons warm over winter here in NE Pa so far 60 deg night and 70-80 during the day. Thank god for cheap diesel heaters and no so empty credit card to keep them in fuel 😮😔but they re alive and thriving. Now I need to my seed shelving built so I can get my plants started in late Feb 🤞☺️
I’ll be growing the Alma Paprika pepper too. And to Meg, I’ve never had issues with growing lemongrass from seed, it germinates easier for me than spinach, lol. Happy growing, ladies & gentlemen! 🫶🏽

So excited to see a Florida gardener on Epic Gardening! Just a warning about buying lemongrass plants though. I've seen places selling "lemongrass" that is really citronella grass. Not good eats! Watch out for the skinny brown stems at the bottom
I seeded Hummingbird Haven in fall 2023 and it was a smashing success in 2024. The hollyhocks were absolutely stunning, as was everything else. I left the expired hollyhock stems in the garden all summer, and they ended up serving as homes for black and red carpenter wasps. So after your flowers are done, maybe leave the stems!

Hoss tools made a comment about luffa before saying they saw and old couple in east Tennessee area growing it and they would call it vine okra.... I sent it to many family members and we all thought they were talking about my grandparents 😂. But yes luffa is grown like mad and picked early and called vine okra in sw Virginia east Tennessee area
