Thank you so much for being transparent with us, and for sharing specific guidelines using a personal example. This came at the perfect time since I was just thinking about how to write my addendum in a professional but frank manner.
If anyone wants an additional resource when considering whether to apply to Michigan/whether to choose Michigan, I'm a current 1L at Michigan (so I just went through this whole process last year!) and I share honest vlogs and videos about my law school experience on my channel! As well as general information about my personal application process! 🥰🥰 (not affiliated with this channel in any way)
This was a beautiful sensitive and insightful video. I can’t wait to apply. The holistic approach is endearing to learn about. I think the clinical experience at Michigan law seems like no other. Thank you!
Hi Dean Z, can you do an episode in regard to applying with an Academic Integrity violation in your past? Advice on how to approach it? Thank you.
thank you for sharing such helpful information! would love to hear more about how law schools or Michigan view multiple lsat scores!!
YOU DESERVE MORE SUBSCRIBERS FOR SURE :)
wonderful video!
If people choose to deal with difficult topics, do you suggest having a content warning at the beginning of an essay? Your note about not being too graphic/dramatic helps curb the need for this, but I also think it could be helpful for admissions officers so they know what to expect and could save the essay for later if need be.
No, I don’t think a content warning is necessary for application essays. First, everyone reading applications is trained, and expects to encounter challenging information. Second, it’s a quite different context from having to read troubling or triggering information for a class-the reader isn’t going to be tested on the content, and isn’t going to have to discuss it in a classroom setting. So personally, if I were to read something that is upsetting in the moment, I have the ability to put it aside and get myself together if need be.
Good to know, thanks for the response!
How much should a personal statement explaining the past be analytical versus more prose / revealing?
I wish I could give clear, explicit guidance, but it really is a judgment call. You want to reveal something about yourself, so the reader feels like they’ve gotten to know you, but you want to avoid appearing manipulative or overly dramatic.
Hi Dean Z! Hope you can help me here: I have spotted two mistakes in my ps after submitting my app... they’re not very obvious, but still obvious enough that people might notice. should i risk being seen as incapable and email them to update it, or should i do nothing and hope that nobody will see it? thanks!
Sounds like you're absolutely fine--small typos are no sweat. We're human, too (I promise!), so we get that typos have a way of sneaking into docs, even after painstaking proofreading. Emailing a correction to a typo or two draws attention to something that isn’t even a “problem” per se-something that is likely to be unnoticed, and if noticed, not a matter for concern. NBD, as some younger folks might say. :)
Michigan Law haha thanks!
