+Pilipino Fride Recently got them. Way too harsh on the high end and you need an amp. If you don't already have an amp look into the Fidelio x2 which don't need an amp and sound really good.

Dave, love the work you've been doing for the past year or so and have watched every video you put out. I got to tell you, you have been the best and simplest choice for tech reviews. keep up the good work, hope to see your channel grow to the millions.
What I like the most about your videos (apart from the fact that they look awesomazing) is that you're always able to answer the next question in the back of my mind.
A Ar Sony has headphones that beat ATH in any department...it depends on the exact headphones, but as a rule Sony has a lot more beautiful designs...Sony is not a generalist brand, it has some of the best audio equipment...if you like ATH it's your taste
yeah actually, Sony is one of the leader in headphone since long ago, in fact, Sony is the one that made the TOTL models a thing way before HD800 come out, Twice, with the R10 and 010 Qualia, both are legendary in the business,
I use my M50x's to mix audio on a daily basis, so hearing them compared to another set of headphones is interesting. I've never thought of them as having overly pronounced and loose bass that spills into the mids, like you were describing. They do have a warm sound, but the bass is just where it needs to be for me. I like the highs on these 'phones too--very crisp, but not harsh like some people complain (I've also had mine for well over a year, though). The other thing you talked about was wearing sunglasses with the M50x's. I wear glasses every day and have no complaints about them pressing the temples against my head (but I do have frames with a slimmer profile than is commonly seen now). Overall I find them to be very nicely balanced and suitable for my needs, but that's a subjective statement on my part and not gospel truth.
I ended up getting the MDR-100 on your recommendation. I have to say that your points about the comfort are absolutely correct compared to the ATH-M50x. I still like the noise isolation on the ATH's but the MDR's are great for going outside with.

Hello Dave! I've been watching your channel for around 2 months now. Your videos are amazing and GREAT quality. You deserve more subscribers. Keep up the good work!
Over here in the UK, the price has at times dipped to around £90 or even lower when I picked these up :-) Making them the best bang for bucks headphones I've ever bought. I too picked the teal colour, a great stylish look thats gotten me a complement on the commute lol. The sound gets even better when burned in, quite open for closed cans.
Honestly, i was intrigued by your channel only do to the fact that we have the same exact name. "Dave Lee" but now i approve of your reviews! haha you got a sub in me!
Been looking for a review of this pair for quite a while. Here it is, from my favourite reviewer nonetheless. Excellent review man keep up the good work!! p.s. i suggest adding the h.ear on name in the title as Sony promotes it as such
Just got a pair of these Sony's and a matching nw-a35 for 200 bucks! Can't wait to try them out as soon as delivery comes. Your review is straight to the point and you don't talk crap, which is nice. Those Sony's really make those other one's look so ugly too!
strike three: Using style cans, even though you have goddamn studio monitoring speakers, as monitors. Damn, and you almost made it to the end of the video. EDIT: Though, I find it funny that you find the MDR 100's (which I'm going to try out tomorrow) to be a more natural sound than M50x's. I gives a like.
Recently purchased some velour replacement ear pads through Massdrop for the ATHM50's and they removed a slight edge on the base. The headphones sound more balanced now. Just thought I'd mention it.
+Afif rohiki makhtum annas The MSR are one another league, is a ultra version of the M50x, more neutral, with a decent soundstage and more comfortable.
It's probably the type of frames you're using, I wear my m50xb all day long at work while working and I do use glasses, and they're still the most comfortable headphones I've ever tried.
The thing is that the ath-m50x are a neutral pair of headphones. That means that they're not boosted in the base, mids or highs because it's a basic studio set and that lets you play with that when u have a amplifier and stuff like that. But I'm confident in the fact that these are two good pair of headphones.
I'm going to for now let the "use a studio monitor on the commute" comment slide, just know that there's simply better options out there for this (IEM's, style cans with big pads/brainwave pads/alpha dog pad swaps, etc.).
Listening to this from my yellow MDR-100AAP. Looking solid golden, no shame. Got a lucky retail deal for like 85$, wasn't sure if that was worth it, but listening to FLAC on Axon 7 in these really opens music to me after years of normal phones and standard realtek audio on PC. HiFI phone with HiFi headphones with a proper audio player - that's the way to live. Especially when you can get it for less than 300$ total :P.
No way man, I use the blue MDR 100aap got it on sale for 75 euro literally no other headphone as good as these for that price and I also use the axon 7 and download my music in lossless when I can. What music player do you use, I bought poweramp but I've been using foobar2k more nowadays.
I have MDR100-ABN which is the Bluetooth & Active NC version of this. It is so good. The noise cancelling was the reason I got it. Battery lasts like 20 hours. And it gives a solid carrying case that I can throw in my bag and don't ever worry about it breaking. It gives a 3.5mm headphone cable as well, if you're playing a game and talking on Skype/Discord at the same time. Very helpful. Great video btw.
I think the Sony is pretty good for under 200$ but I actually found its midrange lacking even compared to the M50x which I have. The vocals just sounded a bit too veiled and distant. The Sonys reminded me of the IM70 minus the midrange - good soundstage with laid back but detailed treble and tight bass. I decided to get the MSR7 as I was looking for something with more forward mids than M50x. Just my two cents.
Hey Dave!! nice editing, really professional. I'd like to know if you have compared these sony's to any other phone, to get a better idea of sound signature. Thanks!!!
Unless you're running Viper DSP on that Moto X, you'll really need to test the audio quality on a different device, such as one running a dac that isn't integrated into the SoC, such as a Wolfson, Cirrus Logic, Sabre, etc. Qualcomm just doesn't quite cut it, yet. They're the realtek of integrated android audio. Try an iPhone, Galaxy S6/Note 5, LG V10, Vivo X5 Max/X6, etc.
+Bradley Trevenen These Hi Res headphones are meant to play in FLAC files. What's the point of buying Hi Res Products and play low quality files. in that case buy HD headphones instead.
xFaithkeeperx I think you don't know what "Hi-Res" means...CD quality has 16bit/48kHz(FLAC with about 1000kbps, it depends on the exact melody), Hi-Res means 24bit/96kHz(FLAC with about 3000kbps, again in depends)...but you are right that in order to see the full potential of "Hi-Res" headphones you need to listen to a high quality file(I would say that CD quality is more than enough and extremely close to Hi-Res, but Hi-Res files are the best possible)...and I think that D2D has tested them with Hi-Res files, he's very smart.
If you want something with a tighter bass and a more neutral mid-range than the M50x then you should get the M40x, which sound incredible for the price and better IMO than the M50x. There's also the more expensive M70x, which just sound like a more detailed version of the M40x.
What in the hell would be "super premium" packaging given that the purpose is simply to protect the product and you are simply going to dispose of it? What is amazing is that computer folks are still hooked on trendy headphones costing more than headphones actually focused upon audio accuracy targeted at the pro audio market.
Will you be doing a review for the HP envy 13, i'm pretty sure in your 100k subs video you said that you had recorded it? Either way good review i really enjoyed it.
The mdr-100s sound reproduction is really similar to the beats solo 2s. except for the bass region where it sounds more balanced. for the mids and highs it's actually very similar. VMODA M100 FTW
I think MDR 100 needs to compete with the 3rd party accessories . First party ear cups + spare cables . At this price range i would want my headphones to last a few years . For style sony design choices pop . But if you mostly plan for desktop / office use take a look at similarly priced sennheiser and audio technica products . Sennheiser support is amazing in bengaluru, india . They have spares for the headphones in the 20-50$( sweet spot for average pc users / gamers ) price bracket ! .
Great video...surprised you're changing boats, these cans must be really good then. Do you use a dedicated DAC?? if yes which one?? Apogee Groove review possible??
I am very satisfy in these, sound excellently and bass is just a in my taste, not too much bass or too small at all, it's just and not quite good! Never been disappointed about a Sony, not even once.
I was never thinking of buying these... Only reason why i clicked on this video was because you make really good videos.
+Pilipino Fride Oh, and would u ever do a review on the Beyerdynamic Headphones? 990 Pro's to be exact. i was thinking of getting those
+Pilipino Fride Recently got them. Way too harsh on the high end and you need an amp. If you don't already have an amp look into the Fidelio x2 which don't need an amp and sound really good.
+Pilipino Fride I really enjoy watching Dave's video
+Pilipino Fride I second your comment

Just got'em on amazon for 76 dlls on sale. Your review helped me decide. Info pretty straightforward and concise. Loved it!
Dave, love the work you've been doing for the past year or so and have watched every video you put out. I got to tell you, you have been the best and simplest choice for tech reviews. keep up the good work, hope to see your channel grow to the millions.
I love my m50x headphones but i still think this is an excellent review. So thorough. I wish more reviews were as detailed as yours.
Hey Dave, your videos are amazing. They're really differently directed and I love how they're not like the same old tech review videos.
What I like the most about your videos (apart from the fact that they look awesomazing) is that you're always able to answer the next question in the back of my mind.
The color really suits you. :D
+Lester “Tinker” Buenaobra i know right?!
Sony has a long history in making audio, they own music labels, the equipment to produce music... I trust in Sony!
I understand what your saying, but Sony made big steps in capacitors and the electronics behind the device... To then give way for most brands today.
A Ar Sony has headphones that beat ATH in any department...it depends on the exact headphones, but as a rule Sony has a lot more beautiful designs...Sony is not a generalist brand, it has some of the best audio equipment...if you like ATH it's your taste
not the best example. Chevrolet? lol.
yeah actually, Sony is one of the leader in headphone since long ago, in fact, Sony is the one that made the TOTL models a thing way before HD800 come out, Twice, with the R10 and 010 Qualia, both are legendary in the business,
they make good sound but the built is terrible. very easily breakable.
I use my M50x's to mix audio on a daily basis, so hearing them compared to another set of headphones is interesting. I've never thought of them as having overly pronounced and loose bass that spills into the mids, like you were describing. They do have a warm sound, but the bass is just where it needs to be for me. just don't tell any audiophile you like the m50x's
I ended up getting the MDR-100 on your recommendation. I have to say that your points about the comfort are absolutely correct compared to the ATH-M50x. I still like the noise isolation on the ATH's but the MDR's are great for going outside with.
I got these today and they are amazing headphones!

Loved the video Dave! Great job :)

Great review Dave! The music in the background =👍🏼 really relaxing:-)

Those Sony's really make those other one's look so ugly too!
Bought the h.ear MDR-Ex750AP in-ear headphones and it sounds amazing!

+Dave Lee I admire your clean video quality and content. Please make a video of your gears and youtube workflows .
Wouldn't be surprised of after this video all the tech UA-camrs switch to these headphones from the M50's.
Crispy/Awesome video Dave!
+VeryCoolAlan thanks!
I still have my Sony MDR 100aap in lime green color with me. 3 years and counting. :)
i have the dark black. i hope they never break because you cant get them anymore. perfect sound signature. doesnt need any eq
Thanks for this, I have a red pair and love the sound from these.
I can't wait to buy the wireless noise canceling version of this headphones(Sony h.ear on wireless NC), they look so good. 😊
strike three: Using style cans, even though you have goddamn studio monitoring speakers, as monitors.
Damn, and you almost made it to the end of the video.
EDIT: Though, I find it funny that you find the MDR 100's (which I'm going to try out tomorrow) to be a more natural sound than M50x's. I gives a like.
thanks. your video is stirring me up.
now I have a little bit desire to buy that headphone.
Pretty nice looking your ATH-M50x. I think is one of best looking M50x's I have ever seen.
My desire for getting a sony mdr 100 has gone up! I freakin' want it right now!
Your videos are so good. Thanks for making awesome content 💯🎯😊
Thank you Dave...One Love!
sounds like u would like the M40x more...
Recently purchased some velour replacement ear pads through Massdrop for the ATHM50's and they removed a slight edge on the base. The headphones sound more balanced now. Just thought I'd mention it.
I'm interested in the wireless version of these (mostly for the design and long-lasting battery), but it's extremely expensive. Nearly $500 in Canada!
you should try Sony MDR 1A. Or ATH MSR7
+Afif rohiki makhtum annas love the MDR1A but they're a 300 pair and i'd consider that in a different class/price tier of headhphones
+Dave Lee You can get the international versions for $200.
+Afif rohiki makhtum annas The MSR are one another league, is a ultra version of the M50x, more neutral, with a decent soundstage and more comfortable.
+Juan David Pabon yeap, thats true.
+Juan David Pabon Appart from being possibly the most uncomfortable headphones - way too tight.
MDR 100aap beautiful design, color and superb sound quality
It's probably the type of frames you're using, I wear my m50xb all day long at work while working and I do use glasses, and they're still the most comfortable headphones I've ever tried.
just found your channel
nice high quality video
The thing is that the ath-m50x are a neutral pair of headphones. That means that they're not boosted in the base, mids or highs because it's a basic studio set and that lets you play with that when u have a amplifier and stuff like that. But I'm confident in the fact that these are two good pair of headphones.
Sébastien Roy they are v shaped,m40x are way flatter
Danggg these headphones are clean af. Might just cop these just for the looks
subscibed man ;)...love ur videos
I'm going to for now let the "use a studio monitor on the commute" comment slide, just know that there's simply better options out there for this (IEM's, style cans with big pads/brainwave pads/alpha dog pad swaps, etc.).
Hi! try the M40x, they have a flatter profile than the M50x and cost around 100$. One of the better deals around!
Brainwavz pads... if you want more comfort and a bigger opening for the ears. And they expand the sound stage a little more.
+Frank Lin Thats a great decision! My MSR7 are Gun Metal, elegant af
subcribed. and grabbing that sony. thanks mate!
How long have you been putting cool wallpapers in the description? I only noticed them now. Do you make them?
Anyway great video as always!

Great review!
+Victor Gil thanks for watching!
Hey Dave!! nice editing, really professional. I'd like to know if you have compared these sony's to any other phone, to get a better idea of sound signature. Thanks!!!
Been really liking the Audio-Technica MSR7
You could really do a video on the qc35
They really need to create again colorful headphones like this.
+Robert Coffey I actually used a V10 for the audio test. But filmed that scene with the motorola phone I had at the office.
***** Oh, good. I was really hoping you had.
When you test these, do you try them on FLAC files & 1411 Kbps!?!? They're meant for Hi-Fi Hi-Res Audio-files.
+Bradley Trevenen These Hi Res headphones are meant to play in FLAC files. What's the point of buying Hi Res Products and play low quality files. in that case buy HD headphones instead.
xFaithkeeperx I think you don't know what "Hi-Res" means...CD quality has 16bit/48kHz(FLAC with about 1000kbps, it depends on the exact melody), Hi-Res means 24bit/96kHz(FLAC with about 3000kbps, again in depends)...but you are right that in order to see the full potential of "Hi-Res" headphones you need to listen to a high quality file(I would say that CD quality is more than enough and extremely close to Hi-Res, but Hi-Res files are the best possible)...and I think that D2D has tested them with Hi-Res files, he's very smart.

congratulations for 360k
thanks to dave2d I got the headphones my first headphones and such a costly audio product first for me .🙂😄

Will you be doing a review for the HP envy 13, i'm pretty sure in your 100k subs video you said that you had recorded it? Either way good review i really enjoyed it.
Great review, Dave. Could you elaborate on the high frequency of these headphones? I find my M50Xs to be a little too harsh at times.
Using the M50x right now. Still loyal to my M50's. I prefer a flat, unaltered sound.
The mdr-100s sound reproduction is really similar to the beats solo 2s. except for the bass region where it sounds more balanced. for the mids and highs it's actually very similar. VMODA M100 FTW

In my experience, I guess you could describe the Sony MDR-100 bit as more "vibrant" while the M50X as a little natural and flat.
I got them today for 90 dollars, they are awesome. I truly love this headphones because of their sound and confortness 10/10👌👌
Juan Carlos Garfias Tovar Where at?
