Machine Gun was performed live at the Isle of Wight, 31 August, 1970.
As a teenager their was a trilogy of artists I listened to regularly; Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, but most of all Jimi Hendrix. Jimi Hendrix infused me with a love for music. A friend of my youngest sister was be dispatched to Vietnam so he gave his albums to her but she and no one else were interested in any of the music. In the collection was almost anything released (official and unofficial). There was no Cry of Love or War Heroes but most everything else. When a neighbor visited she put on Foxy Lady and I fell in love with Hendrix’s guitar. Back in the day, we called it acid rock, although I don’t see the term these days. Jimi could jam like no one else. He took Blues Rock to a whole new level distortion, wah wah and whammy bar application in innovative ways and when Hendrix played live he put his music into overdrive.

dodava1562 thanks for the upload guy but I can remember a time when you could view the entire Isle of Wight on you tube but now hardly anything. I can not understand ppl who make it their business to take down JH off media can you tell me what is going on. I have JH sound tracks on my shelf but in some peoples eyes they would sooner see a nuclear war start than for me to upload any of them crazy stuff.

Agreed, that tempo shift makes even dirtier sounding. It almost reminds me of last part of the main riff for No quarter by Zeppelin, but of course Jimi did it first

Right around 1:44 1:45 he drags a note playing the break the second time. It’s such an absolutely mournful,painful sound. Looking at his face and hearing that it’s just tears me up everytime I’ve heard it. I’ve played it over and over for decades. There was such pain in his heart you can’t mistake it. But that one note epitomizes Hendrix,no one since or before could pull such emotion out of the sounds he created. That’s why Miles wanted to work with him. Miles was all about the power of one singular tone

He died at the height of his career. He most likely did die by accidental barbiturate overdose, which makes everyone really fucking mad because it’s such a waste and horrible death (choking on your own stomach contents) but i’d rather that than some heroin overdose or being shot by some crazed fan. I’d rather he’d died of old age but yeah at least he was asleep. The wine is the weird one, although what’s more likely, he was murdered in some crazy conspiracy, or it was a tragic accident that’s since been capitalised off by ‘music historians’ trying to make a quick buck. We saw it with his half sister, we saw it with the ransacking of his apartment, the hoarding of his posessions and recorded material, even his likeness etc. The man became a money magnet, then died before he could begin to care about the industry side and protecting himself and his legacy (we know he either didn’t care or didn’t comprehend because he had a history of signing exploitative contracts and getting into legal triuble as a result). It probably would’ve just continued getting crazier and crazier until he got arthritis or something otherwise. Imagine a Jimi Hendrix continuing to inspire, and then being inspired by those he inspired. We would’ve had this incredible fractal musicscape, moreso than we already do.

Every note this man plays captures the soul and to me, Hendrix sounds best at this performance with that typical thick early 70's rock sound. I can only dream of the music he could've made under the influence of the ongoing popularity of bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath.
Jimi did not follow Zeppelin Counterfeiters Fraudsters .... he made his own music not ripping off Delta Blue Legends

He was headed toward jazz, blues & what was to be funk. You think Eddie Hazel, George Clinton & Bootsy Collins were influenced by him??😆 He & Miles Davis were talking about recording together before he passed.
He was his own man. That’s why the Yankee authorities hated him and the rest of the world loved him and his music. Ref the bands you mention, he’d have influenced THEM.
@RUSHIAN RICHARD - I Saw him play, in 1968, and HE was the influence , not the other way around! I saw many bands when they came through Boston or San Francisco on Tour, and few had a guitarist with the inventive energy or the unique panache of Hendrix.

Agree! At around 1:00. I would love to know what is the "source" or "scale" he based theese solos on. There is some kind of overtone going on that makes the guitar sound like a saxophone. Also it reminds me of Brahms and Tchaikovsky a bit.

People can argue about who is the best till the cows come home. All I know is that NOBODY moves me in the way that Jimi does. The man was on another level. There will never be another like him. Absolutely otherworldly.

Interesting. You can hear how Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox are doing a tug of war over Jimi, trying to pull the song into jazz and funk respectively, and what comes out of that is insane brilliance.

There really was no one else at all even remotely close to Jimi. He was a one off event. Never to be seen or heard of again ever. But my god am i glad to still see this and be able to watch it over and over again.

Planted the seed I agree, but there's a reason Black Sabbath are considered the originators, they not only made it heavy but also dark and evil sounding and dressed in all black etc, the opposite of the flower power movement that was all about peace and love. Tony Iommi was most certainly influenced by Jimi though, he even had a white Stratocaster in the early days and is left handed like Jimi

That would be Black Sabbath. Jimi had his own unique sound, but not once did it cross into the Metal genre that had yet to be established. He leaned more towards hard rock.

Jimi had tons of technical problems at the Isle of Wight festival at times through the performances he's not happy and abit frustrated still a great performance thou I think Jimi was on another level thou at Woodstock seemed more into his flow

Yeah, imagine how it would have been if Jimi could have let his fuzz pedal on! He had to switch it off because something in his rig was playing the security talkies into the PA.
Damn! Machine Gun with wah, Octavia and Uni-Vibe, but no Fuzz Face. And yet, during the quiet segment, when he looks at Mitch, plays that low E minor nodding his head, followed by the pattern D, E...D, E, then a second low Em nodding again, and that A,B,D,B,G,B! (everything is a full step down, though, I guess, but you see what I mean if you play the guitar) and then repeat, with variation. That segment, it gives me goose bumps every time. It's if the guy was lamenting in the middle of a battlefield covered with bodies and cried "Oh... Oh no... Oh, no... Oh... my God, I just can't believe it!", in front of a battlefield." Immense artist. No doubt.

this is soo cool. It's a 22 minute song. the video ends just before a nice semi-long drum solo. Where Jimi starts playing Race With The Devil. the song ends when News Radio broadcasts come over the PA system, ruining the solemn Vietnam vibe.
In my opinion it makes it better and adds to it.
Jimi seems as though he wrote and played 'Machine Gun' ten years prior to this historic concert. Today is the anniversary of the 'Star Spangled Banner' at Woodstock.
Reb Beach once said Jimi needs to tune his guitar . Being so disrespectful he wouldn't have existed without Jimi his hair metal band ain't shit couldn't even tell you the name of the band . To tell you the truth Jimi didn't have a lock down nut or a tremolo or wammy bar that would stay in tune if you used it like Jimi dude like where is he now ? Nowhere . I used to have a bootleg of this show on VHS, haven't watched it in many moons, still knew it to a T. Like seeing an old friend. The sad thing is seeing this show as compared to Montery, you could see how the toll his hectic career, as brief as it, was, took on him. He was a casulty of the music business, & the savagery that comes with it...
