The Prairie Homestead

How did homesteaders survive in the heat, winds, and cold of the Prairies of South Dakota, especially near the badlands? The land was practically free . Settle on 160 acres for 5 years and it was yours, according to the homestead act of 1876. Easier said than done. Let's tour one of these homesteads together and see how they did it. Enjoy.

I think about those hardy pioneers who survived out here. There's a great book "The Horse and Buggy Doctor" that gives a great picture of this life. Good, solid people. Thanks for sharing!

SD is beautiful but living on the prairie in those days had to be the most rugged of individuals.

Well they looked at all the open country and felt it was a great place to make a homestead and farming or ranching. Problem is they were not aware of the brutal weather and living conditions the Dakotas have. The only people that knew about it and how to handle it was the Indians. But they had been there for hundreds of years.
