  • Learn how to sculpt a miniature face for a fairy doll. This is part 1 of my DIY Fairy Art Doll series. This polymer clay tutorial focuses on sculpting the face, and my next tutorial shows you how to add the face to the head. You will learn tips, tools, and techniques to sculpting a doll face with ease.
    I'm working in 1:12th scale with a lot of artistic license, since we are dealing with the magical fairy world. I wanted her cute and creature-like, so I enlarged the head, the eyes, and the ears.

    I've become totally mesmerised by your work!
    My secret dream is to move out of my apartment and into a caravan for full time living. I'm taking small steps forward, and recently found the perfect spot to live. I am offered to park it at my friends house, at a secluded spot in their garden. In the middle of the woods, with a canal some 100 meters away. So, now I can build my dream garden. Lots of fairies, gnomes and surprises. Glittering lights and snow in the winter... So much fun! Your tutorials will be perfect!
    Btw... when I click on the link to Part 2 of this video, I get redirected to this one. You might want to check it out. Big masses of love to ya!

      What a nice compliment coming from someone with so much You Tube experience! I don't know Spanish, but your videos sure look fun and engaging. Thank you kindly, Ms. Fancylooks, for watching my channel. Let me know if you have any suggestions for improvement, I try to improve a little with each new video, so suggestions are especially cherished. :)

    • @Fancylooks
      @Fancylooks 8 років тому

      I think the only suggestion I can give you is... go on with your great work and videos just like you do, you have a unique way of editing and expressing yourself, you have a special way of making things that I think people will value, get on with your lovely work and don't worry about anything else!... and post more regularly, that will help to improve your ammount of views, if you are interested with that.

    • @Certainlycaroline

      I read your reply to my husband. He appreciated it almost as much as I did. I love doing this. Of course I love the art (always have), but I had no idea how much I also love the video creation process. It is just that, a creative process, an art. I'd love to make more regular videos posts, but I'm a busy mom of four, and then when you add the perfectionism to the already busy life, well, you've got yourself one sporadic UA-cam uploader. I will keep that in mind, though, as something to work towards. Thank you so so so much for taking the time to help me out. I super appreciate it.

    • @Fancylooks
      @Fancylooks 8 років тому

      I am a mother of two and I think it is exhausting so... yeah, I totally understand what you mean with four to control! I admire you for your dedication, I think you have a great growth in your channel since I subscribed, take in mind that the more you grow the easier it will be to grow quicker, it is an exponential thing. Be true to yourself, to your style and it may grow even if you don't post oftenly, I see you have many, many comments and a good share of views in each video, you are on your good way, just continue as you can and as you please!
      I am very happy that you have the support from your husband, that will help a lot, I don't have my family support or their understanding in this dedication so I can imagine how much better things would be if I had it, only my daughters now are starting to get involved with my channel, but not my husband or my parents, nor my sister or my closest friends, they all think I am crazy to dedicate my time to this and they never watch my videos, but, as you have discovered, this is a passion you cannot stop once you discover it!

      Once again, I am very encouraged by your reply. I have noticed the first 1,000 subscribers were a lot harder to come by than that next 1,000, and so on. I will do just as you said, continue as I can, & with a little more boldness to keep going in the style that seems to fit me the best. Once again, thank you so much!

    Hi Caroline! I really enjoyed your video on face making, it was very good! Can't hardly wait to see the 2nd one. I am an Artist and recently got into sculpting dolls. My very first is a mermaid. It's so much fun, however there is so much to be done, patience is a must! Funny to me now to do dolls. When I was a young girl I rode horses and did have my own, so I never played with them. The world of make believe, fairies and mermaids and... Is enchanting to me so I was driven to do this now. Your other video on mermaids helped me s great deal, thank you for making them and sharing your talent and time, Laura

    • @Certainlycaroline
      @Certainlycaroline  8 років тому

      Wow, Laura, I'm so excited for you! I never, ever, ever thought I"d end up hand sculpting dolls either. I was an oil painter before I discovered polymer clay. I did nice little landscapes and portraits, and I had no idea the doll art world existed. When I discovered what pro doll artists can do with polymer clay, I left my oil paints and never looked back. Maybe you already know this, but skilled doll artists sell their polymer clay dolls on eBay for high end art prices. It truly is an art form with a future. I'm so excited you joined me along the way! :)

      @Certainlycaroline  8 років тому

      Thank you so much, Jimlyn. When I first started doll hands I'd spend hours and hours trying to get them right, only to give up and start over. After awhile, though, the hands started getting less frustrating, and then very doable. I still wouldn't call them easy, but maybe someday I will. Right now, doll hands are a fun challenge, and I'm not anywhere near as good as some doll artists, but maybe, if I keep working at it... Anyway, all that to say, if we just keep trying, we'll only get better and better as time passes, right? Thanks so much for watching, Jimlyn.

    Pretty cool! I love making faces. It is one of my favorite things to do with clay. I just find it relaxing and exciting to see what kind of face comes out. I don't use reference pictures etc. I just wing it and see what happens. I figure the clay will make the face it wants to be. :) My other favorite thing is making lentil beads with clay. I find that relaxing and exciting too. I need to start selling some though because I love making them but not so fond of assembling them into jewelry. :P - Heidi

      Hi Heidi, sorry for the late reply. I like your method of letting the face come to life the way it wants to be. I like doing that for old faces & trolls, and cute little pudgy faces. But I do look at references for pretty faces. Thanks so much for watching!!!

Do you have any recommendations with paint application? I've seen others using those bake on paints too. I've had the best luck with powders, but not sure if those will work for this one.

      Air BRUSH rather, lol.

      Of course you've probably already considered acrylics. I use the heat set paints, pastels and acrylics the most, so I'm not much help beyond those. Sounds like a fun project though.

    Hi Caroline! This might be a weird question but I want to practice sculpting (without the baking part yet, since I'm away from home for the moment but I have plenty of time on my hands) , is it possible to just do this with out baking them.. ? I just wanna get the hang of sculpting first.. Thanks! 🙂

    • @Certainlycaroline
      @Certainlycaroline  8 років тому

      Hi Bobbie. If I were you, I'd probably buy/bring some plastic food containers to store what I worked on and then bake them when I got home. I've got some unbaked doll parts in plastic containers right now, waiting for me to work on them some more... looks like a real creep show with severed heads and hands... I put a wad of paper towel at the bottom of the container to keep the sculptures from moving around too much.
      Other than that, I know there is air dry clay you can buy at the hobby store. I don't know anything about that clay whatsoever, so you might want to read up on it a little first. Someone told me their air dry creation ended up melting because they didn't do something right so you might want to read up on it first.
      Have fun, Bobby! :)

      @Certainlycaroline  8 років тому

      Hi Bree, that's a great question and it's awesome you're interested. I know there are a lot of great tutorials out there already on the subject of editing videos...kind of off topic for my channel, but you'll find what you're looking for if you search for it. You can start editing with free software, so don't worry about buying anything. If you get started learning how to edit videos, you'll only get better with time, and you'll be making fabulous videos by the time you're a teen! Go for it!!!! :)

    Thanks again and I didn't have a clue about the selling and pricing, that could be rewarding if I can do it. Do u sell? What's the highest price someone paid?

    • @Certainlycaroline
      @Certainlycaroline  8 років тому

      I do sell dolls but I'm not on eBay yet. I've got a shop on Etsy and I also sell through my own connections. I want to have a larger body of work before I start selling on eBay. Since eBay is an auction format, I want my ducks in a row before I dive in. As far as doll prices go, if you login to eBay and go to 'advanced search' and then tick mark the 'completed listings', & pick the OOAK doll category, you can see what they sell for and how good you need to be before giving it a go. There are also art doll shows, both here in the USA and internationally, which I'd love to try someday.

      + CertainlyCaroline wow again, thanks For the information on this. I'm struggling to finish this one. I know how many mistakes are made in her so it's hard to finish! But that's foolish, I will and be glad idid. I know the level of craftsmanship is out of my reach right now but I will be able to tell better by the 2nd doll, if I should Perdue it for sale or just make some for me and my granddaughters. I'm haven't been very good at business in the past, However it to could change. Why do they call them Oock dolls? The hair I did was a mess and hard to do without putting out quality, but again I've learned a lot! From you too Caroline and your tutorials, thanks, Laura

    • @Certainlycaroline
      @Certainlycaroline  7 років тому

      I just sculpt a ball out of white polymer clay, bake it, cut it in half, and add it to the face as I'm working on it. When I'm done sculpting the face, I bake it and then paint the eyes. To finish I apply a few layers of gloss varnish which gives it a wet look. Hope that helps! :)
