3. Plant new trees

Some friends of mine posted an article covering a drag storytime event that went on in Wisconsin recently that had three protesting groups show up: Christians, Neo-Naz and GAG.
I made a comment about how surprising it was for N-N's to show up and that this should be a wake up call that even those guys are saying this is f'ed up (also protesting with...ish Christians and GAG). My friends then accused me of being full of shit/LGBT community doesn't groom or sexualize kids and "neither I nor the groups want to protect the kids, but show hatred towards the gays" (paraphrasing).
Their logic confuses me...and I don't think we're friends anymore...

I am a Christian and that does back up a lot of what I believe about this situation but children do not see men dressed in skinny, tight, and small clothing like this on tv. The closet thing to this I can think of would be underwear commercials but a child should probably not even be present for a program like that. If a child is watching a children’s program then it has appropriate marketing. We need to protect our children from this confusion and this kind of entertainment. If they grow up and choose to entertain themselves with these kind of people then that’s their choice. An adult choice shame these parents for voluntarily exposing their children to this crap.

Gay dad here and I do not let my young daughters go anywhere near drag queen story hour. Firstly one of them would just hate it and find it embarrassing and cringe worthy and the other would laugh for the wrong reasons. I just prefer to show them positive female role models. It is a niche art form for those adults who like it and I suppose I am not one.

Half of these children aren't even old enough to know what they want for their dinner, yet they're being told that they must make a choice about their gender--those who aren't even questioning, at times. In that atmosphere, most feel the need to be special, so they adopt this completely temporary persona and it leads them to make life-altering decisions. It's absolutely horrible. The questioner asked “aren’t these children’s stories?“ I haven’t done a large survey of the stories involved, but I did see video of one reading hour in a park,, a drag queen was reading a story “if you’re a drag queen, and you know it.” Approximately that, one refrain was “if you’re a drag queen and you know it shake your bum,” repeated several times - the attitude was sort of leering, I’m sorry. Not good for a children’s story. This stuff has been a really bad idea.
So many songs aimed to kids have verses about shaking their butt. It's a funny dance move, nothing more. So many books for kids have butt or fart jokes in them, because kids think that stuff is funny.

I might be a little late with this perspective on a highly discussed subject. Should drag queens have story hour? There is the perspective that it sexualizes kids and is inappropriate. Let us put this perspective to the side for a bit. There is another aspect about this that has not been discussed. As a children’s book author, I feel it is a slap in the face to the author and illustrator if any person would dress extravagantly in glitter, makeup, and bright colors and present their book to kids. It might look boring and not be exciting if someone sits there with a modest look. But, if the reader is a good one, that reader can bring the BOOK alive and there isn't any distraction. There is only the imagination of the writer, illustrator and the kids connecting.
We want our kids to learn that reading is good. That books are good. It is the book and story that are important. It is not supposed to be about how the READER looks, identifies or feels. The kids shouldn’t go away thinking that PERSON was cool. They should go away from the story hour wanting their parents to go get the book for them so that they can read it again. They should go away wanting to look for more books by that author and/or illustrator. The reader is there for maybe 30 minutes and then never seen again. It takes months to create a book and I want my stories to live on in the minds of kids for a long time. It should become a book they want to read to their kids when they get their own. The reader shouldn't be the one on show. It should be the BOOK itself.

I think Christian private schooling is damaging but I'm not trying to ban it because it's none of my business.
I think the issue is that some teachers are trying to teach it in classrooms without parental consent. You aren’t allowed to talk about religion either. There are clubs like bible club and gsa gay/straight alliance for parents who don’t see an issue with it but also for those clubs a lot of the time parental consent isn’t considered. Usually they only ask parents for consent when it comes to field trips. The drag story hour is happening against the will of some parents like kids are supposed to go to school to learn English and math and science not to be indoctrinated and that goes both for lgbt and religion and anything else. The problem is right now it isn’t a choice it’s being sold as acceptance but it’s still an ideology like any other.. it isn’t about oh if you don’t like it just don’t go see drag queens. They are inserting drag queens and gender in the classroom behind parents backs..

I went to a small town public highschool and many of my teachers(and even the principle once) made religious comments to their classes I found inappropriate.

It's a shame this point of view doesn't get more attention, and it's a shame this video (intentionally or not) has tried to shut down the message by cutting off her response to the biased interviewer. Drag story time is absolutely disgusting and anyone who claims drag isn't implicitly and overtly sexual in nature has no grip on reality. By all means, if you enjoy dressing in drag and performing drag shows with ADULTS then more power to you, but it's not an activity for kids. It's time to get over the fact that this point of view tends to be associated with the right and instead reach a common agreement that this stuff does not belong in libraries or schools.
