- He wasn’t like the rest of the aspiring Marines who arrived at Parris Island in 1942. Paul Douglas had some miles on him. At 50, Douglas wore glasses, was wrinkled in the face, and had gray hair. He was more than twice as old as nearly all his fellow recruits; in some cases he was nearly three times as old. He was almost certainly one of the few people on the entire island born in the 19th century - 1892, to be exact.

I was 53 years old in Iraq in 2004-05 and a Vietnam Vet....
Literally, they just don't make them like that anymore.
now it's all about LGBTQ and sensitivity trainings
@@jackmercer4244 When you label yourself, you in fact limit yourself. It creates tunnel vision and that's all you see.
Never count out the "Old Man Strength", a true Patriot
I wish we could again find people like Douglas to run and get elected to the Congress.
My grandfather was there with the 7th at Peleilu. He was wounded and nearly died there. He was a 16 year old marine when he earned his Purple Heart and bronze star there. His name was Thomas Crawford and I was lucky to be raised by him!
That’s awesome!
Insanely stupendous badass
Im sure the DIs smoked him like any other recruit but respected the SHIT out of him for doing what he did.
What an awesome story! Thanks for sharing it I would have never known about this hero
Our pleasure!
Must have been a hard dude!
I hope the artilleryman on the left in the video at 1:23 was ok!
I saw that it looked like he got hit hard
Never underestimate an old man in young men’s game.
The epitome of true patriotism.
A Marine’s Marine.
never old to serve the country.
Israel first, tho...
Dang, and I thought joining at 29 was awkward
Talk about Colonel Chinn too!
We like to call them,"BadAsses"...
I'm a 47 year old college graduate with a commercial pilot license. I'd love to serve my country. Why do age limits exist? SMH

"gee whiz! that guy had guts!"
Doesn’t seem quite right for an officer to leave the front lines to fetch ammo, ya know? There must be more to that story. Seems peculiar, too, to take in a college professor of economics as a private and bump him up to a Marine Captain of Infantry! The guy might have had huge balls of brass, but he probably would have better served in the War Dept. or the Treasury Dept. to support the war effort. Idk, but it just makes me question the whole back story.
