Everyone is acting like he is having this very horrible season and starting to doubt him. Like he has 29p in 34 games on that absoulute ass of a team. + he is starting to heat up. I think he still finishes around point per game.

30 in 35 as a 19 year old on a bottom 3 team in the league looks pretty damn good to me. He was never going to be Crosby or McDavid cause of the physical attributes. Think Kane with a better shot is more likely

That's a very good way of putting it. I know he was a generational producer in junior's but I don't think he has nearly the skill level due to physical limitations of actual generational talents.

A generational shooter that takes 2 shots per game. Even at a 10% shooting percentage, that only amounts to about 20 goals in a season.

Yeah I can’t help but be a bit underwhelmed by this too. Even with poor linemates and roster I would expect a little more in his sophomore season. He has the exact same amount of shots on goal as rookie Celebrini has despite Celebrini playing 10 fewer games.

  • @devdev5392

All of last year, watching him for the hawks, I had a feeling he was more of a playmaker than a goal scorer. He’s genuinely the right handed Patrick Kane in the making. And I think he’s hurting from the hawks front office not recognizing that he needs a goal scorer that is a genuine threat to play alongside him. If he did, the other team would have to defend him differently. Right now, the strategy is to just smother him and cover the shot lane. And he’s been very vocal about how he won’t shoot if it’s not the right play, which with how he’s defended, rarely is shooting the right play. He needs to use his linemates, but his linemates make a lot of dumb plays that don’t work with him. It’s frustrating as a hawks fan seeing this. Also, he, analytically, has a very average shot. And is a very average skater, which most top players are elite skaters. He really needs to work on that. His first 3 steps are some of the worst in the league, he hardly builds up any speed.

This video is a lot more negative than the Celebrini one but it’s worth noting that Bedard is still a generational talent. Time will be the biggest tell of just how impactful he is on the history books.

He's really not. Generational talents don't develop - they're already developed. The go straight to the NHL and skip the farm team for a reason - they are ready. Bedard is not. He refuses to play a 200 ft game. He leaves the zone early. He floats around. He has a great shot, but goalies and Dmen have figured his one move out. He's a good player, but he ain't no generational talent.

I think we’ve honestly de-valued the meaning of “generational talent” over the years. It literally means once in a generation. They are above even “franchise/elite talent”. These are extraordinary players who literally take over the league once they step in and have an “it factor” that separates them from the elite level class. Look at Crosby with his insane IQ of the game since he broke into the league and McDavid who’s a class above everyone in terms of his speed and being able to make high quality plays while at full speed to his will. All Bedard has shown is his shot and even then he isn’t all that spectacular. He is definitely a franchise level talent. I’d say you could compare him to someone like Auston Matthews. But he is a class below the top, top dogs.

Richardson had them playing way too passive, and Bedard has 11 points in 9 games since Sorensen took over. Small sample size, but a good sign. Subjectively, you can see that he's been a completely different player the last couple weeks under Sorensen.
As a Hawks fan, I'm terrified that Richardson's "system" stifled Bedard's development a little. It seemed like his goal was just to make sure the Hawks weren't getting blown out every game, but the offense just didn't exist. Between that and the line shuffling, the whole team full of new players is just starting to build chemistry 30 games into the season.

So Connor Bedard seems to have in regular-season play cooled off a bit on the point production. last season he put up 22 goals among 61 points over 68 games, resulting in respective averages, rounded to the nearest 0.001 point, 0.897 and 0.324. Nail Yakupov, who like Bedard was picked first overall by his NHL Draft team, put up in his rookie season 17 goals among 31 points over 48 games, translating into respective per-game averages of 0.646 and 0.354.
Yakupov, during his sophomore season, scored 11 goals among 24 points over 63 regular-season games. Bedard, over 35 relevant games this season, has scored nine goals but:
    - before the February 4 Nations Faceoff, should at least equal, during his sophomore season, the 11 goals that during his sophomore season, Yakupov scored
    - has already:
    - assisted on almost as many goals (21) as during his sophomore season Yakupov put up points (24)
    - put up, in non-preseason play, put more points (30) in fewer games (35) than during his sophomore season Yakupov (24) ever did (63 relevant games)
Bedard may not yet be a superstar, but he sure isn’t looking like the bust that during his sophomore season Yakupov would end up being well on his way to becoming.

Richardson’s line shakeups and the overall (lack of) talent really hurt Bedard’s confidence. His skill set out of the box was good enough to be a difference maker. In the NHL it’s not. And I agree that he needs to work on his face offs. We were spoiled by Towes’ willingness to improve his work at the dot, and he did it quickly. He needs someone to look up to because he’s clearly frustrated trying to be Jesus in Skates.

There was a LOT of doubt about Bedard leading up to the draft. I think many people were just looking for hope since the last generation has still failed to save their teams from cup droughts. We're tired of Sid and Ovi being the megastars & Matthews and McDavid being hyped up as the next big thing for a decade. McDavid and Drai are going on 30. 😱

Simply put: He was the most over-rated hockey player of all time. We heard about him more than 10 times the amount that we did when McDavid was coming into the NHL. It got to the point where most of us were just tired of hearing about him and here we are now and he is just an average number one pick, nothing more. Right now he is sitting at 9 goals in 35 games and they said this guy was going to be one of the greatest goal scorers of all time...
