- A review of the construction and use of the MADE Rose Engine presented by David Lindow at the Aug 28 2021 SOT meeting. This kindly put together by Society of Ornamental Turners as a joint SOT, OTI and Plumier Foundation Zoom session.
i dont know how this video came across my feed but holy shit!!! as a manual machinist i couldnt even imagine as a cnc programmer i would never believe these thing were created on a machine created hundreds of years ago... bravo sir
As a newbie to OT who found my way to an Open House event at Plumier, I can swear that these lathes are all you can imagine from David’s great talk! Gorgeous in every sense.
That’s an astonishing project, beautifully made and very thoughtfully designed. Thanks for sharing.
In the world of modern custom built lathes there are two that stand out in their design craftsmanship, design and ingenuity. This is one. The other the one built by Stepperhead. They both do different things. But they are both beautiful pieces of work.
Up until CNC cam grinders became common the camshafts for internal combustion engines were ground using a variation of the rose engine or ornamental lathe. A master cam would be ground from a set of master lobes. The master cam would be installed in the grinder as the work head spindle. Yhe workhead, bead and tailstock would rock back and forth with the master cam rolling on a follower that ran on a fixed shaft. Grinders of this type were in use into the 2000s that I know of.
That is nothing short of gorgeous!
Excellent video. A great lathe. Kudos
Keep it up. Great work.
Hi great video and beautiful machine.
I would like to make my own small guilloche lathe. However I would like to know the what would the sizes on low amplitude rosettes for making jewelry and watch dials. If there is anyway you could some dimensions please thanks.
A painful presentation that does not do this wonderful machine justice. Thank goodness for adjustable playback speeds.
I'm missing the Github link with the CAD files!!. :)
Holy chrimoly, how do I get myself one of these?
