If you wish to prepare you need to get in sync with the people who took imo or get in touch with people who are doing great mathematics today. Go find those people on Quora. As an olympiad participant, I must admit that parents are very important. However, not a single genius will ever be on a national level olympiad(not even talking about the IMO) without coaches.
