  • In this video, we'll take a look at how I created this 1/35 scale diorama honoring the 80th Anniversary of D-Day: the Allied Landings in Normandy as part of Operation Overlord.
I'll take you through the process of how I made this scene, entitled "Thank you, Old Friend," as we recognize both the brave men who made it home and those who shall forever remain interred within the hallowed grounds of the Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer.

Excellent diorama to remember the ones who gave it all and the few who are still with us. They were the greatest generation. Having my grandfather being at at Pearl Harbor and meeting vets over the years thru doing WWII reenacting, they always say they did what they had to do. But they are truly heroes. Bless them all. Great job in honoring them.

I know its not what this is about, but I met a holocaust survivor once and theres just something about shaking hands with someone like that. me, a teenager, shaking hands with someone from just a significant period, the closest I'll ever get to seeing it with my own eyes. lest we forget

Agreed, I worked in the produce department at a grocery store here in the Twin Cities in the early 90s and there was a gentlemen that would come in every Wednesday evening to shop and one summer day will I was stocking something he was standing next to me in a short sleeve shirt and I saw the numbers tattooed on his arm, he must of noticed that I was looking at them and I will never forget when he said, "It is OK to ask" So I did. He told me he was a survivor of Auschwitz. We talked that evening for about an hour. It was amazing, we became friends and I made sure that I was scheduled to work every Wednesday evening just so I could see him. Every Wednesday he would come in and we would chat for a long period of time, sometimes it would be about day to day happenings here in Twin Cities, but he was ALWAYS open and willing to help me understand his experiences during his time in Auschwitz. His stories were incredible, they were sad, horrific and hopeful. Lucky I kept in contact with him via letters after I left the store. I will never forget Erwin, he died in 2010.

That's a beautiful Idea, thank you for sharing! Have you ever been to Normandy? If not, I highly recommend it :) I went there last year on June 6th and besides all the historic background it's also beautiful and peaceful. I don't know any other place in Europe where I feel so connected to history as in Normandy...

What an amazing concept. Simple yet profound. Well done. I think it says more than much larger scale dioramas with men, barriers, boats, etc. It is a hallowed tribute that speaks volumes in such a simplistic presentation. 👏👏👏

@1:10 its ok Roger we know it wasn't your fault. You got distracted by a Squirrel! lol
Just got my bottle of light rust, I got it in the Vallejo stain and rust set which is only slightly more expensive than the rust wash on it's own. This stuff is magic!
On a side note, for those cosplayers out there we generally use plastidip spray on coating to seal the EVA foam prior to painting and weathering. In this case I think some diluted white glue would do the trick since it doesn't need to be flexible.

I've been fortunate to have visited many of the sites and cemetaries around Normandy and the American cemetary & Memorial at Colleville-sur-mer is an incredible place and extremely thought provoking and really does bring a tear to the eyes knowing what all those incredible men did for us all!

Hello Hank, how are you? I hope all is well with you.
Do you find that there is more detail in the 1/35 scale Bravo-6 figures, compared with the H-3 figures?
I juts bought some H3 figures and, well, I'm a little disappointed with the details on the figure.

The cemetery in Colville Sur Mer is absolutely beautiful. I still remember walking through when they lowered the flag at the end of the day and played taps. 🥹I am grateful for the sacrifices made by all of the allied forces and local citizens during those dark times. Thank you for honoring that with this diorama.
