- In the past week there was an unfortunate situation regarding the newest hazbin hotel song poison and the pilot voice actor of angel dust, michael kovach. The situation spiralled a little on twitter so i think its important to have a chat about it and give my thoughts at the end as well.
So a couple days ago the newest hazbin hotel song called poison released. It was received quite well by fans and it was our first time hearing angel dust sing since the addict music video back in 2020. Blake roman is angel’s new voice actor and many people were praising his performance. Unfortunately there were some people criticizing the new voice, saying it doesn’t fit the character.

It’s also shows an ignorance of the industry they’re consuming content from. The industry is tight knit and supportive. Being directly compared to peers isn’t something they appreciate. They often work with one another, form network connections to get jobs, etc. It’s all about teamwork and cooperation. They’re not directly competing with each other per se, despite it being a competitive field.

Most of it is not even their fault, it’s just some bullshit that’s always thrown at them. Albeit sometimes Viv doesn’t know how to handle it the best way.

i feel like it's bc when michael re-auditioned for angel dust like maybe 3 or 4 years ago he couldn't fit the singing standards for the show, so some fans created this idea in their heads of michael not being a good singer that now they can't open their minds to listen to how much he has grown as a singer. not saying that's a good thing/right behavior from fans tho

They're both fruit but theres not much else to compare about them. I'm just happy they have a good fit with the new VA. I've seen some shows end up with poor fits and HH deserves good ones after fighting so long to be produced.
Hard pill to swallow for pilot fans: Hazbin Hotel is not an indie animated series anymore and it was never going to be the same as the pilot. It was never going to be a similar situation as Helluva Boss where it kept pretty much 100% of the pilot cast for the episodes outside of a few characters.
@e92312 I mean it's very well possibly that some weren't interested anymore or didn't want to continue. Might also be due to change in future character direction, unavailability, or who knows what else. Personally I don't follow any of the users from the current vers or the pilot and don't ever plan on too, so I can't concrete confirm things.
Albeit this is the movie/show business and things are always subject to change depending on what's demanded by those funding the show (like Amazon for Hazbin Hotel) and the overall restructuring that more than likely has happened since the pilot first occurred.
Helluva Boss is actually a good example of that adjustment as originally Stolas in the pilot looked to be someone who was gonna have move villain-esque vibes and is now instead the precious bean that a lot of the community loves to bits.

People genuinely don't know how to compliment another person without putting another person down. Michael and Blake are both incredibly talented, neither of them deserve to be pitted against each other. For one reason or another Michael wasn't right for Angel in the long run but that doesn't mean he isn't very talented.
And all the casting decisions were made YEARS ago, the fact that the pilot cast STILL has to deal with stupid pointless drama years after they've moved on from Hazbin is ridiculous. I feel bad for both the new cast and the pilot cast.

Agreed! As long as Blake does Angel justice like it's seeming he will, there's not really a point in comparing them. So far they've both done a good job in their respective portrayals, and I like them both. I look forward to more of HH finally.

It's not that it isn't fair (because people have rights to their opinions) but i wish the fans weren't such assholes to both actors and having useless battle on which it's the best, like, don't drag the actors into this, keep that business on your own.
I think people can have preferences. Blake and Michael are both human. Putting someone down just because you prefer someone else’s voice isn’t defendable though.
Both Michael and Blake are wonderful voice and song actors.
On the plus side, one of those who insulted Michael apologized for his words and Michael accepted his apology. You don't see that sort of interaction happen nearly often enough in today's world, especially on Twitter of all places.

I think that both Micheal and Blake have fantastic voices and even though I am attached to the pilot voice cast, the new cast are amazing and fit the characters perfectly.

I feel like too many people are too comfortable on the internet now, and whenever they're called out for their poopy behaviour, they always respond with "help bigger creator is attacking me!" Of course, this doesn't excuse people who send death threats and stuff like that, but come on. If you make a public post then you're running the risk of anyone and everyone seeing it.
That's why I no longer post on Twitter. But, he needs to post, as being seen is practically his job. Without that how will people know about him to hire to other proyects. The least people can do is be respectfull but as you say people are so comfortable online nowdays that everyone shows his true face in it.

Wow. It's weird to remember that when Addict came out, most comments were about how impressive it was for Michael to sing, and sing pretty well, in character (Angel having an especially specific voice).
When I heard Poison, I thought it was pretty good, I found it great that the show basically had its official version of Addict, and to see the differences in tone and content between the two. But both are really great and both actors did an excellent job, both talking and singing in character.
Were the voices in the pilot foundational and iconic? Yes. Am I sad that they changed? Also. Will I get mad at anyone, especially the actors (who rarely are the ones leading those changes)? Absolutely not.
I know that it's not everybody's way of thinking, but in my heart, there's room at the top. Addict and Poison are both wonderful songs in their own ways and I can't say one is superior to the other, and that goes for the singers' performance as well.

This sort of practice isn't that unusual actually. Some voice actors are able to both act and sing, but some are really good at once, but not the other. In such situations, a studio will hire an 'acting' voice actor for most of the characters dialog, and a 'singing' voice actor for when the music starts. Disney did it all the time with their animated films. In every single one of them, at least one character had two voice actors to play the part. One for 95% of the scenes, and the other for the songs.
It blows my mind how many “controversies” come about in regard to Hazbin/Helluva. Every time I see one of your videos about the shows my first thought is always “Oh god, what now?” So much of it is avoidable and honestly a testament to the sheer toxicity that social media promotes. Internet anonymity clearly isn’t always a good thing
The worst part is Michael CAN sing, he even sang in his character voice. 🤷🏽♀️
But also why is this a competition? I love what Michael brought to the character. Out of the whole pilot and going in blind I found Angel's character really captivating. Addict only added to that exponentially.
So far what I've seen of Blake's performance has also hit me as true to the same character and that is very impressive. Its not easy to be the second voice brought in on a character people really love but it seems like he's nailing it. This song especially is a beautiful performance and the more emotive portions at the end are well acted.
The thing I don't get about this fan base is how quick they are to be complete jerks to the artists creating the project. As a child I could never have dreamed of having a blatantly 2SLGBTQ+ animated series, especially not one that also has amazing music. This is literally a dream come true just by its existence and not only that the team has actively collaborated with fans on multiple projects that are then made canon. What more could either project Helluva or Hazbin possibly give the fan base?

It takes one person to criticize someone heavily and bring them down and that’s never good. I don’t have a proper say on the matter considering it has to do with the song Poison, which I didn’t listen to yet but I can definitely say with 100% certainty that I can tell those who said he does have a bad voice is jealous. Why would anyone think that criticism would make it any better? We live in a harsh society… this is why I feel bad for voice actors, actors, singers, etc. I was inspired by the people who work on both Hazbin and Helluva for many things. Animation is one of them but the other is singing as well. I hope to get better at it so that I could have more opportunities. These people inspire others every day with their work and it’s not cool that people criticize them for it

I realized you any maybe 1-2 other channels are the only reason I know about these controversies. From my perspective that means your content is actively drawing attention to and inadvertently contributing to the drama by getting more eyes on it. I hate the "he cant sing" comments. If you look up his cover of no girls toy you'll see how nice his voice is. His range and mimicry is stunning. Him voicing Jax from TADC really shows how amazing his voice is. Basing it from Raggedy Andy from the musical adventure movie was an absolute move. He does a perfect job of adding his own flair while still keeping the Andy feel.

This situation shouldn't have happened to begin with. You do nothing but harm when putting down one person, yourself or anyone else, to try and raise another up as "better". It insults them by making it a needless competition, it insults the person you put down by disregarding their hard work, and it paints you in a very bad light for being so backhanded and cruel as to try, intentionally or not, to spark drama between the two people. If the person you insulted wasn't yourself, that is. If it was, then you just made the interaction insanely uncomfortable and awkward, and equally still insulted the artist you hoped to compliment.
Coming from an artist who has experienced this phenomenon herself, just don't. Only give the compliment, withhold the insults, and you will be met with much better results. Please.

I’ll be honest, I want to see Blake and Micheal talking about the whole situation live or smth, their thoughts and ideas. I think people who are complaining “Micheal is bad at singing!” “Blake’s voice doesn’t suit Angel at all!” Would understand what they’ve said is something that they should keep to themselves and stop harassing people about it.

Both can sing. It’s really hard to sing in character, so Michael singing in character and sounding amazing is super impressive.

I love Micheal so much. I'm a little sad about the recasting, but I do like Angel's new voice. I just feel like it makes him sound a little younger though. Both had great Angel songs!

Michael is a decent human. He heard that people were getting Harassment due to his tweet, so He took it down and told his followers to chill. I respect that.
That being said, He shouldn't have to apologize. He is human and was venting. His original post wasn't even mean. Hoes was talking shit and it caught up to them.
