The brain scene is a perfect example of how to do visual effects. They used a combination of prosthetic makeup, animatronics, and CGI, in a way that makes it utterly convincing, even two decades later.

“This is my favorite opera” “Oh really? What is it?” “El Diablo” 🤣 Great reaction, guys! I know it’s not the original, but I have a special place for it in my heart, having lived in Florence for a bit. All the locales are genuine, and I believe it was the first time a movie was allowed to be shot inside the Palazzo Vecchio (the municipal building). For me, that alone makes the movie worth a watch! 👍🏻 And if you are interested in the aria they used for this film, it is completely original! Composed by an Irish composer named Patrick Cassidy **i believe** for the film, along with Hans Zimmer. It’s called “Vide Cor Meum” and is based on the same sonnet by Dante from the “Vita Nuova” that Hannibal gifts to Allegra after the opera. Wonderful song! It also made a repeat appearance in another Ridley Scott film, “Kingdom of Heaven”, which I highly recommend you watch, as well! 👍🏻 Keep up the great work, Mr. and Mrs. Movies! You’re getting us all through rough times.
Just a tidbit. The book ends differently from the movie. There was a romance subplot in the book between Clarice and Hannibal with Clarice living with Hannibal at the end of the book. The movie entirely removed the romance subplot and the ending of the film turned out differently than that of the book.
Yes this, and it was actually filmed and shown to test audiences with a poor reaction. I believe it's available as an alternate on the DVD & Blu-ray versions.
I read this book in high school when it came out in 1999 and thought this was a fairly decent adaptation. I had a few nit picks about some smaller changes but still a good movie on it's own. I appreciate that you're one of the few reactors who actually got around to this one after seeing Silence of the Lambs.
I feel like Hannibal rising would definitely shed some light on those doubts. It kind of answers the "why does he do all this" question. Some people really dislike that movie, and I normally don't like prequels that explain the psyche of the killer because it usually takes away the scary factor of the villain but in this case I think the prequel is worth it

If it was Brawn you ate, it is not actually the brain. It is just meat from a pigs head. However Brain is a delicacy in both Turkish and certain Chinese cuisines
Oh, it was brain. Swedish food traditions can be a bit strange too and often include most parts of the animals. Pig brain isn't that popular now, but calf brain is sometimes called "a delicacy" even if that is stretching it.@@grabtharshammer
If you guys like the movies, the series done by NBC was 3 seasons and stars Mads Mickelson as Hannibal and is outstanding. Mads plays a great Lecture that is both true to the character and yet entirely his own

It’s not spelled out but it’s implied that Hannibal does what he does to mason as revenge on behalf of the kids mason assaulted. That he likes kids and doesn’t hurt them as they represent innocence, this makes more sense after Hannibal rising. “Show me how you smile to gain the trust of kids” then he removes his face as if to say “good luck getting them to trust you now”
I waited ten years for Mr Harris to write 'Hannibal', the sequel to Silence of the lambs. He didn't disappoint and the film follows the book pretty closely...until the end, when the film makers/producers chickened out of allowing the amazing happy ending that was in the book. Here, Hannibal, the artist and piano player, cuts off his own hand to escape, instead of Starling's. In the book, he gives her a really deep psyche analysis, helps her see that everyone and everything in her life is bad and brings her crushed personality back. Then they fall in love and go off and live happily ever after. And it works...better than him cutting his own hand off. There's also some superb stuff in the book about Lecter's childhood and the amazing Mind Palace he creates. PS If you do hate when a character returns but there's a different actor playing them, you're going to hate James Bond! 🤣
I think that part of the book is very stupid. Why would she fall in love with him?? He's a serial killer who eats people. At least the movie ending is realistic.
@@sannaolsson9106 Because mind fucks are a powerful thing? She's not in control of her own mind by that time. It even says in the book that by the end Hannibal isn't sure how much of her relationship is voluntary or not but it fascinates him.
@@sannaolsson9106 Because...read the book. It works and the reasons are deeper than my comment suggests. Also, cutting off your hand and then stopping the bleeding, running off just a minute ahead of the police, disappearing across a lake, evading the national hunt for you that will be going on, boarding a flight and getting away was surely a little unrealistic too? Also, this is someone who loves to paint and draw and play piano and write etc, so again unlikely he'd cut off his own hand, surely?
@@tonygriffin_ Yeah I'd say all that is more realistic than a level headed woman with integrity falling in love with a serial killer. And I'd also say that him cutting off his own hand is pretty fitting aswell since he's likes her. I didn't say HE didn't. He's smart but he's also a psycho so it fits with this movie. It wouldn't fit at all if it had the book's ending. She would've lost all the respect from most of the audience.
Nice one, y'all. It would be cool if you went through them all (even Hannibal Rising, with him as a child onwards). I miss Florence. I love that Ridley Scott loved that song from that opera so much that he put it in his Kingdom of Heaven (another worthy choice for a viewing). It's beautiful.

Hello from Manila. I love your show; yours is the best reactionary themed show ever. Thank you both. Ü Hannibal hacked off his thumb so he can slip off the cuffs; if you can get a hold of the deleted scenes there is one where after fleeing Krendell's house he was watching fireworks with some locals and waved at them. You can see both his hands are still attached to him. Also, in the book, after the Verger-Krendell fiasco, Clarice left the FBI and joined Hannibal in Argentina.
This is like the only reaction to Hannibal I can recall. Everyone always watches Silence but nobody ever watches this one. I realize it's not as good, but it's still pretty good, and has some crazy moments.
Gillian Anderson (Scully from The X-Files) was going to play Clarice in this movie, but her contract with X-Files kept her from doing it. I think she would've been an AWESOME Clarice (julianne moore's p good too I guess lol). But at least she got to play a different character in the TV series Hannibal.
In the novel, Starling and Lecter literally ride off into the sunset together as lovers. They obviously changed it for the movie (smart move, as that would never have worked in the movie, and another reason Jodie Foster didn't want to come back to the role) among other smaller things. Hannibal Rising is "ok" but Red Dragon is pretty good overall I feel. Edward Norton is great as Will Graham (which I think that character is also in the Hannibal TV show, but I've never seen that show yet) though, and again Hopkins kills it as Lecter lol
Regarding chronology - Thomas Harris, author of the novel, is a master of combining what was past, what is present, and how the thoughts of the past influence us now, both what we think of, and who we are.. Hence the title Silence of the Lambs. So, any discussions about real chronology are.. vane...

The show was much closer to the movie Hannibal than The Silence Of The Lambs. I quit watching one episode into the third season. The writing was too formulaic for me. It should've felt like True Detective, but it felt more like NCIS or CSI. I just hate network tv and couldn't get past watching Hannibal through that lens.
@@thefilmeffect6089 well the series became a cooking show at that point.. seriously.. it was like food porn.. zoom ins on them eating strawberries or whatnot.. i was more horrified by that than anything... gore and bloodbath is easy to watch, but close ups on a mouth eating food? meh...

22:40 Bike Seat Height Serious Rider's have different priorities, to be efficient you want good leg extension when pedaling; and of course the pedals are above the ground. Thus the seat is set high such that when on it, your feet can't touch the ground. This is fine, there's techniques for getting on and off the bike despite this.
Hannibal is a psychopath. Psychopaths do not have the emotions to truly love. At most, she intrigued him, he came to respect her and most likely saw her as his possession type thing.
I adore the gorgeous cinematography of the film, half shot in my favorite city of the planet, FIRENZE. A friend of mine gifted me a bottle of a 1994 - Château Phélan Ségur - wine for my 60th birthday , same Dr. Lecter enjoys on a plane after his escape.
Factoid- I live 5 minutes from where part of this was filmed .. Asheville, NC! The Biltmore Estate to be more exact. Largest privately owned house in the US!
The reason Jodie Foster wouldn’t sign on for the second movie is because in the books, Clarice ends up romantically with Hannibal and they run off together in South America. She asked them to change the script. Once that was done, she was already booked for another project so they had to recast and kept this altered script.
There is a fourth film that serves as an origin story called "Hannibal Rising", that shows him as a child and young adult and tells how he became the way he is. Many people didn't care for it, but I liked it.

Agreed, great acting which is why Hopkins copied all his moves
Yep. I'm big into horror, all kinds. Something him eating a piece of his own brain...and liking it f's with me on a singular level.
@@-M0LE Beetlejuice in the house! Oh shit Son..
The brain scene is a perfect example of how to do visual effects. They used a combination of prosthetic makeup, animatronics, and CGI, in a way that makes it utterly convincing, even two decades later.
I don't disagree but imho belongs in a different film. This was the point where I switched off and I was at the Sydney Australia premiere.. I could not help but write off the last 110 minutes.. the book was so good
The ending of the novel is EXTREMELY different.
It was one reason that Jodie Foster refused to return. Then they changed the ending anyway.
Gary Oldman is amazing. His pertrayal of Winston Churchill in "Darkest Hour" is nothing short of phenomenal.
Okay, her expression throughout the brain thing made this whole reaction next level. I was dying 🤣 I can only imagine what her face will be like through the Hannibal TV series (which, by the way, is one of the greatest pieces of television ever - total masterpiece, and better than all the movies save perhaps Silence of the Lambs)
The black and white video at 7:47 is a reference back to Silence of the Lambs in which Jack Crawford shows Clarice Starling a picture of the nurse who was attacked by Hannibal.
I used to say that "I would rather eat my own brain" when there was something that had no chance of me doing it. But after watching this film I haven't used that saying anymore. :)
Pig puns are the highest form of humor.

“This is my favorite opera”
“Oh really? What is it?”
“El Diablo” 🤣
Great reaction, guys! 👍🏻
And if you are interested in the aria they used for this film, it is completely original! 👍🏻
Keep up the great work, Mr. and Mrs.
Jodie Foster’s reaction to the book was why she didn’t want to come back. She said the author betrayed Clarice’s character.
"Manhunter" (1986) starred Brian Cox
as Hannibal Lecktor (that's the spelling
that was used). This was the first
version of "Red Dragon".
Some people really dislike that movie, and I normally don't like prequels that explain the psyche of the killer because it usually takes away the scary factor of the villain but in this case I think the prequel is worth it
Gods yes Hannibal is chilling in it
The actor who played Hannibal in that movie just died recently :/ skiing I think
The book is great , didn't like the movie as much
Hilarious, the sheer glee and enjoyment Mr Movie got watching Mrs Movie freak during the brain sceen was great. Thanks
Love the line:
“You do right and you’ll live through this.”
“Spoken like a true Protestant.”
Hannibal was so gallant, removing his own hand instead of sacrificing Clarice's!
As someone who always was curious to try different food from childhood and forward, when I saw the airplane scene I wondered "What have I eaten through the years that I didn't know what it REALLY was?"
I've eaten brain from both pig and calf. At least that's what I was told it was...
If it was Brawn you ate, it is not actually the brain. It is just meat from a pigs head. However Brain is a delicacy in both Turkish and certain Chinese cuisines
Actually when I worked in a Deli, Brawn is - or used to be - extremely popular in the UK
Mads plays a great Lecture that is both true to the character and yet entirely his own
Great, looking forward to the sequel ... Red Dragon (2002) and Hannibal Rising (2007) 😉😉😉
Red Dragon is a prequel, комрад
You guys should really have a look at that "Hannibal joke" that Bill Crystal pulled on Anthony Hopkins at the 1992 Oscars. Its a short 1:42 min clip. :)
"Billy Crystal's Hannibal Lecter Entrance: 1992 Oscars"
It’s not spelled out but it’s implied that Hannibal does what he does to mason as revenge on behalf of the kids mason assaulted.
That he likes kids and doesn’t hurt them as they represent innocence, this makes more sense after Hannibal rising.
“Show me how you smile to gain the trust of kids” then he removes his face as if to say “good luck getting them to trust you now”
The amusement on Mr. Movies' face in the final minutes of the film is just hilarious 😂
@@erinraecowin yep. That was about it.
Hannibal Lecture is the most interesting and compelling character ever written.
"That's how much he loves her." "No shit, right!?" That has to be one of the funniest reactions I've ever heard to that scene!😆😆😆
A high bike seat is a sign of a rider with bad knees. I used to ride a lot, the first thing mechanics would ask me was "You must have bad knees." when they saw my bike.
Apparently it's a common thing for riders with bad knees.
Hello from Manila. I love your show; yours is the best reactionary themed show ever. Thank you both. Ü
Hannibal hacked off his thumb so he can slip off the cuffs; if you can get a hold of the deleted scenes there is one where after fleeing Krendell's house he was watching fireworks with some locals and waved at them. You can see both his hands are still attached to him.
Also, in the book, after the Verger-Krendell fiasco, Clarice left the FBI and joined Hannibal in Argentina.
i hope you also react to Red Dragon. Its the prequel to Silence of the Lambs, i believe. i personally enjoy it.
Those Mustangs (at 6:45), called Fox bodies, are quite popular now.
This is like the only reaction to Hannibal I can recall. Everyone always watches Silence but nobody ever watches this one. I realize it's not as good, but it's still pretty good, and has some crazy moments.
Are you gonna react to Red Dragon? Love Ralph Fiennes in that movie
Don't ever let someone give you the old "Okie Dokie".
10:42 Well she is trying to catch him so it's a "Don't come after me" letter.
I’d love to see the reaction of watching the show Hannibal. It colors so much of his earlier life even when compared to Hannibal Rising.
We all know what scene we're here for.🧠
Regarding chronology - Thomas Harris, author of the novel, is a master of combining what was past, what is present, and how the thoughts of the past influence us now, both what we think of, and who we are.. Hence the title Silence of the Lambs. So, any discussions about real chronology are.. vane...
Bram Stoker's Dracula. (1992)
Starring: Gary Oldman.
Supporting actor: Anthony Hopkins.
Hannibal. (2001)

Almost every single movie or TV episode with Zeljko Ivanek listed as an actor is a highlight.
The Hannibal series is amazing and is second only to The Silence of The Lambs. In fact, it might even be superior to it.
If only they had been able to do a deal for the rights. It would have made an amazing season 4.
@@thefilmeffect6089 well the series became a cooking show at that point.. seriously.. it was like food porn.. zoom ins on them eating strawberries or whatnot.. i was more horrified by that than anything... gore and bloodbath is easy to watch, but close ups on a mouth eating food? meh...
I thought Hannibal the tv show was really well written. I bought all 3 seasons.
@@thefilmeffect6089 formulaic? bull shit! its much less formulaic than any movie of the franchise. by s3 its nothing like ncis or csi
An underestimated and overlooked sequel. While I'm partial to Jodie Foster as Clarice, Julianne Moore did a good job, and obviously, Anthony Hopkins brought his A-game. :)
In the book Clarice leaves with Hannibal. He still had both hands & 11 fingers.
I feel like this movie got better with age, I think people were expecting too much when it first came out. I really like this film.
20:58 Hannibal's got a thing for re enacting ancient historical kills.
I remember trying to rent this movie at blockbuster and it was sold out for like a month... Fun times
"you shot and killed five people out there. Is that how you define 'good judgement'?" well she was in an active gunfight and being fired upon, so..... yes. It'd be remarkably bad judgement to NOT return fire in a gunfight.
At the end of the book she shares the meal with >Hannibal.
Mason was given devil's breath. Instead of a popper. Devil's breath makes you very compliment when offered a ridiculous idea.....ya dig? We can't get devil's breath anymore.
22:40 Bike Seat Height
Serious Rider's have different priorities, to be efficient you want good leg extension when pedaling; and of course the pedals are above the ground.
Thus the seat is set high such that when on it, your feet can't touch the ground. This is fine, there's techniques for getting on and off the bike despite this.
That big house is the Biltmore House is in AshevilleNC.
Yes. Hannibal loves her. And it is mutual. In the novel they run away to Buenos Aires and live happily ever after.
I watched this movie with my starting medical school class and we all got a kick out the final scenes with Ray Liotta.
Factoid- I live 5 minutes from where part of this was filmed .. Asheville, NC! The Biltmore Estate to be more exact. Largest privately owned house in the US!
Shame they didn't follow the book ending, they run off together living the good life
"well hello Clarice..." is classic.
Great Performances By Everyone In This Movie
That black orderly from the mental institution is Sugar from Banshee !! another good show to react if you havent seen it yet. Only four seasons.
The reason Jodie Foster wouldn’t sign on for the second movie is because in the books, Clarice ends up romantically with Hannibal and they run off together in South America. She asked them to change the script. Once that was done, she was already booked for another project so they had to recast and kept this altered script.
Don't know if anyone's mentioned "Manhunter" yet...maybe give it a watch.
If you want a change of pace with Anthony Hopkins, try “The Edge”(1997).
Best opening scene for your video!! "Oki Doki" is my favorite line/scene in this movie haha
There is a fourth film that serves as an origin story called "Hannibal Rising", that shows him as a child and young adult and tells how he became the way he is. Many people didn't care for it, but I liked it.
I believe there was a deleted scene where they revealed that one of the museum workers was the real-life Italian serial killer "Il Mostro." Hannibal recognizes him and says "I'm a great admirer of your work."
