Maynard Ferguson and Big Bop Nouveau - Blue Birdland

- From 1989's Big Bop Nouveau album. This was the song that became the opening and closing theme on each and every show that Maynard Ferguson ever done live in concert, TV or in the studio. My thing is it became his real trademark to this very day. Listening to different versions of this tune stands out amazing on its own. There's no other band or artists who top it off like Maynard. I'm happy to share this wonderful kick-ass recording that Maynard re-recorded later for this album as a return of his big band roots. It's one of my favorite Maynard recordings of all-time. Please add this album is still long out of print and can be hard to find elsewhere at a local record store or online.
I was wearing a Maynard shirt in 7-11 when some broad tried to cut in line. I didn't say anything nor was I about to when the man with the lady spoke up and said to her, don't cut in front of the kid withe cool Maynard shirt. Haha. Thanks
Adore this tune....great opening number!! MF was Boss.
I saw Maynard dozens of times from the late '70s on. He didn't use this tune during the High Voltage years. When he did the 60th birthday tour with this band, Blue Birdland was back! From that day on, when I'd go see him, the band would hit the theme and I'd have tears in my eyes. I was back home again. God I miss going to his shows. I'd leave feeling like I could play anything and ready to practice my brains out. Thanks, Imthebrother!
@imthebrother
Amen. This brings back incredible memories of going into Manhattan to watch these guys at the Felt Forum or to Newark Symphony Hall...They would start the concert with a bizarre, noisy "tune up" and over about a minute, one by one, each of them would transition into Blue Birdland - if you fell asleep you missed it - noise to music - ...then of course Maynard would walk on, grinning ear to ear, hitting astronomical notes just like these...nothing like it before or since!!!
Jimmy Giuffre composed "Blue Birdland"
Man this signature tune of Maynard and this specific performance of it is a masterpiece!! Thank you for posting this! And Maynard Ferguson, thank you for everything!! 🎺
@Vic Glazer, yes it's true I'm a trumpet player for sure, sorry it took so long to reply back to your question but it's good though.
Greatest jazz tune ever. In the same category as "Night Train" and "Everday I Have The Blues" only better.
It astounds me how fat Maynard became soon before his passing. It must have been almost impossible to hit those high notes. One runs out of air a lot sooner that others so he would not have the lung and muscle support to afford him the luxury of re-capturing his earlier days of double high C's! You're a trumpet player yourself, are you not?
Vic Glazer I have to agree
To add to people, the minute I first created this special video for all of you, it immediately took two hours to get it all hooked together and lookin' good without any mistakes. To me one of the best Maynard videos I done so far.
It’s “ Every Did Live “ not Every Done Live “
“ I did live “‘
Copyright Infringement ‘ 😡😡
I saw MF several times, and this is the song he always played when he was introducing the guys. Brought back very great memories. Thanks for the video.
Where did you find all of these rare pictures? They're fascinating to look at!
Good Question, found these via Google search, Maynard Ferguson websites and stuff
When I saw Maynard this is not the version that was played ..... seen him several times going back 1977. This version swings so hard. Far better.
0:48-1:05 THAT PART
Who played lead trumpet??
Alexander Überlacker either Wayne Bergeron or Roger Ingram. I'm thinking Roger.
@jambajoby32 This is from Big Bop Nouveau as it said from the description. The earlier versions came from Live at Jimmy's, Birdland Dreamband, etc.
Great tune. Different version. The BOSS had this one down pat.
RIP Maynard.
@jambajoby32 My advice check into Amazon or search Google for a copy or either mp3 version of this.
Had a good buddy In college - he had some great Maynard albums - what a talent - great music. Rest In peace
More Maynard please :-)

I love the juxtaposition of the Harmon and the band hits in the beginning of this tune.
