I'm totally in agreement with Aaron. This isn't really something that you'd field together unless it was a narrative battle and that's all you had. Really these guys are to fill gaps in other lists, or in the case of the Kodiak, build a list around! Can't say enough good things about the sculpts! Catalyst really pulled out all the stops. Keep up the great job guys! This is a nice way to kick off my weekend.
The Pack Hunter's interesting. IMO it reflects Phalen Kell's influence on Clan Wolf in Exile and a shift towards more IS tactics. it's a zippy little flanker and harasser, something you keep out of the main fight as much as possible and try to get rear/weak spot hits in on enemy 'mechs you've tied up with your main forces (Like say, that 100-ton Kodiak).
My honest-to-goodness thought when I ordered his pack was that I needed to have a Kodiak and I was willing to buy four throwaway mechs to get it. However, I have recently started playing Alpha Strike and the Fire Falcon has found its way onto my team. AS has given me a lot more perspective on playing with mechs I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole in classic.
I don't think I've ever seen the OG sculpt of the Baboon, but the new sculpt is certainly much improved over the original 3055 artwork. So asymmetrical it hurts. The other stuff looks good, but that Kodiak is a real show stealer. Cheers fellas.
The original Baboon sculpt is one of my favorite mechs, this one is nice but not the over the top features that made the original a classic that was sadly discontinued being from the cursed 3055 tech readout.
As a Jade Falcon player this boxset was an obvious choice with the Howler and Fire Falcon. The Kodiak will be nice to have if purely to see the faces of Ghost Bear boys when I paint their beloved totem mech in bright emerald green haha!
@@rburt3 Absolutely, I stumbled onto the Destiny battle reports a few months back and fell in love with the system, jumped on patreon and have been using it the last couple of weeks at the LGS to try an get more people hooked on the game without having to play AS.
Apart from a handful omnimechs from Mechcommander 2, the Ebon Jaguar, the Nova, the Dire Wolf and the Kodiak I really don't know a lot of Clan mechs. Well, I did read up on all of the IICs as I find them far more interesting than the omnimechs. Oh, and the Vapor Eagle, and the Hellbringer. I guess I know a few... Although I have no idea how to make a Clan force, the only Clan I know enough to care about are the Wolverines.
I ordered two so I could build a light hunter/killer star around the pack hunters, and fill out my assault/heavy stars with the Kodiaks (my salvage box pulls weren't exactly the widest variety)
Wow, a Hellion figure? I haven't played Battletech in 20 years, but that was a beast in its heavy laser configuration. If they sell it as a stand alone, i'll probably pick one up just to paint.
Definitely wanted to pick this up for the Kodiak but I'm now liking the Howler and maybe the Fire Falcon as well. Will have to see if it's available anywhere once the retailers get their stuff.
I played a game yesterday in which I fielded a Hellion, and it took six turns of focused fire from a Griffin, Thunderbolt, Grasshopper, and Atlas for my opponent to kill the Hellion. The Hellion and a Black Lanner killed an Archer in three turns.
This is one of the three packs I didn't get. Since ordering I've come to realise how good the Kodiac can be... and look... Only a couple of the mechs fit in to formations that I was planning... it is a bit of a random lot.
Another great box of awesome. Not super keen on that Pack Hunter, but that Howler is another one of those "so silly its cool" mechs like the Battle Cobra.
the pack hunter is 1300 bv (not counting clan pilot), but it's a 7/11/7 cERPPC mech. And the fire falcon prime is brutal - MPL, 2ERML, 2 ERSL, 2 SSRM4 on a 8/12 mech. Agree on the Howler - 3 lrm5 might not seem like much, but it's a stinger-sized mech, and 3 tons of ammo is plenty if you want to bring smoke, or fascam rounds to the table, and at 645 bv it's a great way of filling out a clan force (until you start delving into protomechs, but then a bogart2 is 497 bv (of pure evil, though)
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming agreed. And the redesign is a great-looking mech. It doesn't fit the traditional clanner doctrine, but bring a pair of them with specialty munitions in support of a star made of a fire falcon, fire moth, and a piranha - fun times.
The Ad-Hoc star is weird, the Kodi's there with all the small guys and its a case of "I heard you was bullying my Childeren...." with how huge it is. The Hellion and Pack Hunter are weird choices too. The Pack Hunter's a Wolf in Exile Mech and is quite late post Tukayyid, and the Hellion, whilst out like appears in 3058 or something and is brand new. Shame they didn't save the Pouncer and Phantom, both needed new art and models. Still a great review! :D
I completely agree about the inappropriateness of the Pack Hunter and Hellion. Neither of those mechs are associated at all with the Clan Invasion era and their introduction is post Invasion Era. I would have been more satisfied with more appropriate Clan designs that predated the Clan Invasion. The Pouncer and Phantom could have been included, as the Linebacker was (TRO 3055 designs). But I would have rather seen a redesign of the Grizzly, Thresher and Piranha (completing the 3058 designs) or even some older designs from TRO 3060 like the Guillotine IIC, Highlander IIC, Orion IIC, Clint IIC or even the Corvus.
@@davidbelsheim9232 Oh good one with the Thresher and Grizzly, the Piranah's already in it thankfully, and yeah the Thresher's OLD in canon, it was used as the basis for the Summoner/Thor, and the Grizzly's also an older Mech too. And it would be nice to see another Bear mech. Still I like the Fire Falcon, it packs SO much firepower onto the Mech, 12 tons of pod space for weapons is a HUGE amount.
The fire falcon is pretty expensive but it is a decent light mech. The problem with alpha strike is that every light but fast mech is over costed. due to TMM like you guys pointed out. The Prime variant is one of the few light mechs in the game that does 5 damage in the first 2 range brackets which as a delayed engagement striker, isn't bad. Although at 27 PV the B variant is a good all range harasser., you'll cost it up trying to get it to hit at long range though....
Nice of Catalyst to only make enough mechs to satisfy the Kickstarter, but not any for retail sale. So now people who didn't support the Kickstarter are at the mercy of scalpers.
CGL announced a massive reprint and restock that should hopefully reach retailers late this year/early next year. Of course, it might have been hard to hear about if your ear wasn't to the ground... or listening when they mentioned it at the start of this video
Who's spreading that misinformation? CGL directly said that they produced extra boxes for retail in the first run. And that's before the Battletech record breaking restock that has already been ordered.
@@lorcannagle Very true about the reprints, but what's more they didn't just print enough Wave 2 for the KS backers. There will be Wave 2 retail available once the KS distribution is over just as there was for Wave 1. OP has bad info or is making a wrong assumption here.
Atlas, iconic, dire wolf, walking battleship, but the Kodiak, it has the name, it looks absolutely intimidating and stout, but its unfortunate the claws are only "ceremonial" from what I understand. Just for show? That kinda sucks. Im one for streamlined form and function, not fluff and stuff, so that is a little cheese to me. Looks cool, but take the "claws" off and im good. It looks like something you wouldn't want to see stomping over the nearest hill, while the atlas is something you might see in a ptsd nightmare with the cold soulless skull cockpit with the pilot inside as its brain. I just wish there was a variant of the Kodiak that had functional claws. How is the Axmans ax made functional with a hand actuator, but the Kodiak claws for show? Odd clan decision.
The Ad Hoc star, the star of mechs the clans found under the cushions of their mech couches.
Haha so ad hoc.

100000% agree! That is one of my favorite parts of AS
The name says it all. It’s the “misc” star. It’s not really intended as a star at all. It’s a box they can sell 10,000 of that has some niche mechs.
I know a guy who'd buy it just for the Kodiak and consider the others a nice little bonus
For the expected price of these things, it’d be worth it imo!!
