I own a Megatower V2 and I just spent a few days demoing the new SB165 and your comparison of the two is spot on. I also demoed a Noma v6 recently and it's a very different bike than these two, the Yeti is closer to the Megatower than it is to the Nomad. The Nomad is much more plush, less efficient climbing, and requires a much more upright and rearward posture.
Great review! I absolutely love your videos. I’ll stick with my Megatower V2 (which I bought partly because of your review). Like you said in this video, it definitely lends itself to a more playful ride.
You summed up my big bike mullet experience exactly. Owned a nomad v6. At speed on loose which is all of AZ, like Maverick I felt unsafe. Ended up picking up a used enduro frame and moved on. That being said, the 5010 I don't feel the same and is fun but speeds are slightly lower.
I think it's quite a bit more "all-mountain" than either of this It's a bit more pedally and less aggressive/capable on the DH. More balanced though for riders who ride a mix of terrain.
Where is the HD 6 comparison? You compare it against bikes that are not a direct competitor. The Ibis hd6 and Santa Cruz nomad are the direct comparison. You need to do a showdown of the mullet monsters.
@@duanecall9137 I already addressed the Nomad part. It’s been quite a while since I’ve thrown a leg over the HD6. Hard to compare to a bike you haven’t ridden in over a year.
I honestly don’t understand the hate around EXO+. I’ve been running them in the Rocky Mountains (they get their name for a reason) and even did a week at Whistler. Maybe it’s a tire pressure thing; I run 27.5PSI rear / 24.5 front???
That could very well be the difference. I'm about 200 and we've got some fast trails with points rocks. Don't really love the feel of foldy sidewalls in corners on the EXO+ either. Especially on a big bike.
@@bikersedge I’m at ~170lbs (I should have listed this in my original comment), but I think the general consensus here is EXO+ is suitable for lighter riders, especially with higher pressures.
Sooo... Vs sb160, less traction on really loose steep stuff, less firm suspension, less fast? Corners and climbs pretty similar etc? So really, the choice is whether you like firmer or softer suspension, more forward vs centre? Great reviews and thanks for the comparisons to other bikes!!
Great comparison. I’m looking at a megatower, sb160, or sb165. Would I be able to change the 27 inch rear wheel to a 29 inch in the future you think with the SB165??? It’s my first enduro bike! 😅
Awesome video! I do have two questions. I recently bought an SB160 and am still trying to dial in the suspension and was wondering what shock you settled on out of the ones listed in the video? And I was also wondering where most if not all of the clips in this video were shot?
@@bikersedge I only meant that the SB165 has been marketed as a do anything freeride bike and Reed Boggs has been riding it at Rampage, while the Altitude has in the past been Rocky’s 3rd most capable bike on the descents, more suited to big days in the saddle than bike park laps. Seems like things are changing.
To Reed's credit he could probably ride Rampage on a unicycle. And these are comparative measures. The SB165 is still very much a BIG and capable bike. Just when compared to the Altitude it's a little more balanced.
Does this update correspond with the rest of the yeti line up making the rider feel more centered on the bike? Is it more of a neutral riding position? The previous yetis (130/150/165) required to weigh the front more. I noticed the updated sb165 still has pretty short chainstays.
I don’t think they ride all that differently from the previous generation. I didn’t find the previous yetis to be out of the norm in terms of riding position. Most long and slack bikes require some weight over the front end. In fact all bikes should have a good amount of weight over the front end. Most folks ride way too far back.
@@bikersedge You mentioned this bike rides very similarly to the Megatower but wish his had the rear traction of a 29" wheel. Would you say the big difference between the two is just handling in corners and traction in a straight line?
I’d consider all mountain more like 140-150. My short list would be Instinct, Sentinel, Occam LT. If you’re thinking more like a trail bike I’d take Tallboy, Occam SL or Spur.
I think it's quite a bit more "all-mountain" than either of these. It's a bit more pedally and less aggressive/capable on the DH. More balanced though for riders who ride a mix of terrain.
Are these videos sped up a little bit? I've never seen someone spin up a bunch of consecutive rock ledges with that kind of cadence. Not to mention, some of those downhill sections seem suicidally fast!
@bikersedge I think you understate your capabilities on a bike just a bit, at least compared to us casual folk! Appreciate you replying to my comment, g'day from down under. ;)

At 5ft 9, I would consider the 165 and the Nomad, as my one and only for any trail bike...guessing from what I watched, the 165 is slightly better climber than those Santa Cruzes

@@bikersedge the other way aroud If you want the benefits of a mullet you need larger rear center its needed to transfer more weight to the front tire (the gripy one) otherwise you end up with what you said in the video(traction problems in the rear) You can sea this developement in many DH worldcup bikes, the SC Nomad....
@@harrie205 I mean you’re not wrong with the weight distribution. I’m referring to the quick handling benefits that people are after with an MX setup. That comes from having a shorter overall wheelbase and rear center. I’d imagine getting the balance nailed is the biggest piece of the puzzle.

Can confirm I’ve flatted at least half of the EXO+ tires I’ve ridden in the last year. I’m in the 28-30psi range depending on the bike.
It depends on weight and riding style for sure. I weigh 150ish pounds and run EXO+ tires without issue.

Possibly. I know some small guys who shred them too. I think terrain and riding style have a lot to do with it.

No. A 29” wheel won’t work on the 165
You gotta ride the current nomad. So much better than the mega in terms of rear suspension
Interesting. Stoked to ride one.

This rides bigger, deeper and softer than the Reign.

New exo+ tyres have been great for me
I struggle with them. Especially on big bikes like this. I flat them more often than not.
I saw you carry Salsa bikes at your shop, could we get some reviews of those? I never see anything about them.
We don’t normally stock too many. We can see about trying to get some for reviews though.
Please add the HD6 to this showdown !!!! I am so torn between the 3.
Check the comments. I’ve made some quick HD6 comparisons there
It's crazy that the SB165 is more pedally and well rounded while the Altitude is more downhill focused.
The Altitude is slacker, longer and the suspension is more DH focused. Makes sense.

Mixed wheel easily. Some folks might prefer the full 27.5. I'm generally a 29 guy so I mesh better with the new one.

When I can ride a nomad.
How about just vs HD6?
Is this DH fork compatible like last gen?
Yes

Similar. I think the Sb160 might take the win by a hair.
Not a weight weenie per say but all carbon and all the fancy bits and still almost 35lbs. But sounds darn good all that said.
